QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ May 22, 2009 -> 12:48 PM) Axelrod said that Peavy asked KW some pointed questions. About Dye being traded, Thome's Future, ETC, and was well aware of Danks' and Floyd's potential. IT was also said that Peavy picked up the phone ready to say no, and that KW nearly convinced him. I'm curious, how open did he leave the door if at all? Did he basically puke-up his statement from last night? (which I expect and understand)

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 22, 2009 -> 12:44 PM) I heard it went exactly how you predicted except he threw out how much he would love playing for the Cubs at the end. I'm sorry, I have no problem with a guy using his NTC for whatever reason, but to throw Cubbie love in at the end is BS. I now hate Jake Peavy and Barry Axelrod. Yeah, that's kind of silly, especially since the Cubs are absolutely behind the 8-ball for getting him because 1) they don't have the players and 2) the most important reason, as per Levine and other sources, they absolutely cannot add one dime in payroll until the sale is 100% complete and even after that, there are concerns about Ricketts being able to add any payroll

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ May 22, 2009 -> 12:34 PM) Sweet Steve, would appreciate an update of what he says. I'm not listening to it, but I'll give it a guess... Not afraid of the AL, but he's a better fit for the NL, White Sox are great and it was a tough decision, he could revisit it at any time, no money specifics were talked about.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 22, 2009 -> 11:39 AM) Yeah I know, but... it just seems so not Kenny, after Peavy turned them down that way. The Hunter situation was "worse" if you believe reports, the Sox thought it was done, the LAA threw huge money at him, at I believe DJ says a taco stand in LA, and he signed with them and KW didn't flip out. The Sox had to know this was a possability.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 21, 2009 -> 11:56 PM) I wonder what happened to Soto's HGH supplier? What, no more amazing offseason training programs that allows him to lose 20 pounds while hitting the ball 100 feet farther? lol, yeah, nobody was suprised that a 27 year old suddenly started hitting way above his career numbers.

QUOTE (kwolf68 @ May 22, 2009 -> 10:45 AM) I don't get what else could be there from Peavy's perspective. He asked for everything and then some. It's a timing thing, as long as he stays healthy, by rejecting the White Sox he didn't really lose anything, some team might get desperate between now and end of July and take his full 22m and give the Pads what they want, if not, it seems like the Sox will still be there for him

QUOTE (fathom @ May 21, 2009 -> 11:46 PM) There is so much bulls*** coming out of Axelrod's mouth right now. Financial decisions were definitely discussed. Saying that tomorrow, he might change his mind, is pretty lame. http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune....agent-says.html with KW's statement and now this, this won't die for awhile... My favorite part is he's not afraid of the AL, but he won't pitch in it.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 21, 2009 -> 11:42 PM) Watching the Padres (BTW, do yourself a favor and check out Heath Bell's performance vs righties this year) and I hope Adrian Gonzalez is ok. He botched a bad-hop grounder, and looked like he damaged his right thumb. Hopefully he's able to play in the Cubs series this wknd. eek, thumb injuries can be almost as bad for a hitter as wrist injuries. Beyond screwing the Cubs, he is a great player and would be a shame if he is lost for a significant amount of time... it's the PEAVY CURSE!!!!! Yeah, if Bell keeps it up (obviously it won't be a .000 ERA or whatever ridiculous level it's at now), the Pads should be able to get a haul for him at the deadline.

Official 2008-2009 NBA Thread

QUOTE (WilliamTell @ May 21, 2009 -> 11:29 PM) Think the NBA would be angry if the finals was Denver and Orlando instead of Cleveland and Los Angeles? The ratings wouldn't be as high. I would pay to see the look on Stern's face the second either Denver or Orlando clinches. I think Cle will be there, but LA won't -
QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ May 21, 2009 -> 11:28 PM) Dude on the score, brian farook or whoever he is said the rumors floating around per SI or Rosenthal or.. something/someone What Peavy's agent said it would take for him to waive his NTC: ALL SUITORS: Guarantee to pay all 4.5 years of his contract including the full 22 million for 2013 ALL SUITORS: Full No-Trade protection for the entirety of the contract WHITE SOX ONLY (Due to NL/AL Switch probably) Opt-out clause for any year of the contract after 2009 Wow, if that's true he's not going anywhere but the NYY

QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ May 21, 2009 -> 11:08 PM) I'm actually laughing out loud at doing the macarena before the clothesline. I dig it, it's definitely different from the WWE product. IMO, it's most times better than the WWE product. Dragon Gate is running a U.S. promotion now and they are going to be in chicago, that will be worth checking out. -
QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ May 21, 2009 -> 10:26 PM) Swick-Saunders IMO is the best fight on that whole card, but due to name value they'll probably drop it for CC's fight. I think Davis is going to beat the living hell out of Hardy, Franklin is going to pick Wandy apart and probably finish him, and I'm not all that optimistic about Uno. I think Uno was brought in to help convince Kid to come over once his contract is up and nothing more. Kongo-Cain is interesting though. I wonder if Cain wants to stand there and slug it out or if he'll put Kongo on his back and finish it? Kongo's wrestling has improved but still, it wasn't all that long ago when Heath freaking Herring was taking him down at will. If it stays on the feet though I'm taking Kongo via repeated shots to the groin area. Hopefully CC doesn't get scared seeing Kongo in the same building. we'll see, they may keep it on the main card because of the TUF factor... If anything I'll think they'll move the Uno fight, but part of me thinks they'll keep the Cro Cop fight on the undercard and if he has a spectacular or dominating win they'll do what they have to do to show it on the PPV (no title fights, so all 3 round fights help), and if he loses and it's obvious he'll never work out in the UFC, they'll just kind of ignore it.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 21, 2009 -> 09:33 PM) Yadier Molina really does a great job at calling a game. Hell of a series for the Cardinals. He's really impressive all around, truly a fun player to watch.

QUOTE (Princess Dye @ May 21, 2009 -> 11:00 PM) So the money is there. After all. Since JR OK'd this deal, for a pitcher no less....which he's known to not want on long term deals... Then what was the problem with spending relatively little dough on Hudson, Abreu...make the deal in one way or another for Figgins... AND keep the farm system's best players. Why give away the young talent when we couldve done a lot more in free agency to solidify this team? That's a lack of foresight. Unless they just absolutely completely love Peavy alone. Abreu didn't have a position here, hindsight with the injuries he could have played, but they weren't going to sign him and bench Dye or Thome or platoon. I think they value players, and they value Peavy high, their scouts probably ok'd him for the longterm and they saw a unique opportunity that didn't pan out. Money was there for Hunter, Fukudome and Cabrera in the last few years, if they want a player, they'll be flexible

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 21, 2009 -> 08:20 PM) If it were such a steal, why didn't the White Sox agree to pick up the option? or other teams lining up with top prospects to have a crack at him
-
QUOTE (daa84 @ May 21, 2009 -> 08:16 PM) so now that this thing is off......and despite what Hahn said...i gotta think Poreda will be in the pen sooner than later replacing gobble...right? depends on if KW wants to use him as a chip in other trades, if he does, he'll probably keep him in AA unless the team he's talking to reqeusts to see him at another level
-
QUOTE (scotty22hotty @ May 21, 2009 -> 08:12 PM) Please... stop bringing up the 2013 option and that Peavy doesn't deserve the 22 million. Its been brought up countless times: For 76 mil over 4.75 years (16 mil per year), Peavy is a steal. KW knows this, and I doubt he'll leave this alone. there are enough teams that he would seemingly agree to go to, mostly in the NL and none of them have jumped on the steal. Alot has to do with the fact that as we sit today there's not alot of money for teams to spend now.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 21, 2009 -> 08:11 PM) Heyman quoted another baseball exec when asked if he would pick up the $22 million option to get Peavy to agree to a trade, "you have to be out of your mind" If that truely is what it takes to get Jake Peavy, the Cubs can have him. lol, it seems the White Sox and many other teams agree with that executive, since it seems that you don't have to give up a ton to get the Pads to agree (not that I don't like Poreda, but for a 27 year old pitcher, it wasn't a crazy player deal)
-
Cubs will be interesting this year, their offense isn't lighting it up without A-Ram and they have a questionable pen. The big X-factor is Levine saying today that the payroll is absolutely at a ceiling until the sale is finalized and then Ricketts probably can't add a ton. If Bailey gives the Reds anything this could be an interesting NL central

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ May 21, 2009 -> 08:01 PM) I think the AL-NL makes no difference to Peavy. I know that goes against what was said, I just don't buy it. Jake and his agent don't want to come across like money craved individuals, so they use that reason as a sticking point in trade talks. For as much as Peavy preferred to stay in the NL, if the Sox picked up his 22 million dollar option, he would be in front of a table right now with a Sox jersey on, waiting for questions from the media. Right, at the end of the day I agree with you, but I think the earlyness of this proposed move is a factor. I think they figure why would we take anything less than 22m at this point? Let's roll the dice if he feels healthy, wait two months and see if someone will do it, if not, hey it wasn't the right time for me to go to the Sox for an extra 14m, but you know what, now it is.
-
QUOTE (Tony82087 @ May 21, 2009 -> 07:53 PM) Unless the Sox find an extra 22 million they are able to spend in '13, the deal is dead. I'll say it a last time. All the AL-NL, family talk is all garbage. This deal all came down to guaranteed money, and Peavy and his agent didn't get what they wanted. The package the Sox sent over was less than impressive. It was going probably going to be Poreda, Richard, Ely, and Lessman. If I was a Padre fan, that is not an acceptable package for an ace pitcher. However, it clearly is the best the Padres can do. Why? Because no one is beating down the door of Kevin Towers given the fact you have to pay Jake Peavy 22 million dollars four years from now. It's not a smart business decision, and one the Sox aren't going to be a part of. right, to illustrate your point, that offer would probably be judged to be way better than any offer we heard from the Cubs... The Pads will probably have to do a pure salary dump from a team in the NL willing to eat his contract... and if reports are true, Cubs can't do that.
-
QUOTE (beck72 @ May 21, 2009 -> 07:50 PM) Both signed with teams that were offering the most money. The Sox were the highest bidder on Hunter until the Angels came in and overspent. [My biggest regret with not signing Hunter was it would have prevented the sox from trading for Swisher.] If the Sox wanted to overspend on players, they could be like the Cubs and sign a free agent or two. They did it with Linebrink. But the Sox like to trade for players, and "overspend" in terms of talent, rather than dollars. I'd much rather the sox miss on a trade now and then than get locked into a huge, bloated long term contract. I believe for Fukudome the Sox and another team offered slightly more, he wanted to be the first Japanese player on a team
-
QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ May 21, 2009 -> 07:45 PM) You might be right. But I think this deal is dead... Peavy is not coming here. lol we're the ugly chick at the party who can't get a dance... Yeah, but that pretty ring we're wearing sure looks good!!!
-
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ May 21, 2009 -> 07:43 PM) Food for thought. KW didn't burn any bridges on this one. yup, wouldn't be suprised if Axlerod told him wait a month or two and see where everything is at, Jake would consider the White Sox.
-
QUOTE (Princess Dye @ May 21, 2009 -> 07:41 PM) That makes me think it could still change. I mentioned it earlier but didnt Fred McGriff once turn down a trade to the Cubs and then come back days later and accept? Either he rejected it or took 2-4 days to accept. Again, as long as he's stays healthy, I think the Sox deal for him and the Pads or a similar deal will be available later, the key to KW's statement is when he talks about it being early in the year. And again... the media will hype he would go to the Cubs and not the Sox, but again, that's a great story, but he was hesitant to go to other AL teams last year and he would go to another NL team he likes pretty quickly.
