QUOTE (sin city sox fan @ May 21, 2009 -> 02:33 PM) Peter Gammons comments on espn.com sound very promising (the audio portion of this link).... http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4191562 yup, he thinks the option will do it

QUOTE (bschmaranz @ May 21, 2009 -> 02:32 PM) 16-0! yes, that is what the Bears will go this season
-
QUOTE (BearSox @ May 21, 2009 -> 02:30 PM) http://www.fanhouse.com/news/main/padres-c...npage_fanhouse2 I'll exchange the guaranteed 2013 contract for a full NTC. Sounds like KW and Axelrod are probably having a virtual stare contest right now

QUOTE (watchtower41 @ May 21, 2009 -> 02:14 PM) We had our lone chance on him.... Bailey is kicking ass and taking names down in Lousiville, the Reds aren't gonna even think about still moving him with the potenital that rotation has. yeah, considering if he comes up and kicks ass they can contend all year in the central

QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ May 21, 2009 -> 02:10 PM) Is Stark saying we need to eliminate more to take on Peavy? i think he's saying if we get Peavy no one else is going anywhere this year and if they don't it's Krazy KW's Player Sale!!
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 21, 2009 -> 02:07 PM) He's talking about negotiations between Peavy and the White Sox. Is it a certainty they are negotiating? Can they even negotiate without the commissioner signing off on it? I think everything will be pretty rubber stamped unless there's money defered
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 21, 2009 -> 02:01 PM) From someone who is a negotiator for a living, if we are getting into the fine points of a contract then we are steps away from a deal. Both sides wouldnt be asking for things unless an agreement was in there somewhere. isn't it funny when basically there's an agreement that everyone can live with but both sides are still dicking around and someone just bluntly says, enough, that deal is it and it's done?

Both sides wouldnt be asking for things unless an agreement was in there somewhere. I don't do it for a living, but as an attorney I've negotiated a fair amount of settlments and I totally agree. The agent saying it's not over adds more fuel to that.

QUOTE (rangercal @ May 21, 2009 -> 01:56 PM) heyman http://twitter.com/SI_JonHeyman continued negotiations as is the Sox saying they like his contract as is.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ May 21, 2009 -> 01:49 PM) I missed the last 15 or so pages due to lunch. Anything I should know? it seems Peavy said he'd accept if option is picked up, no trade clause extended and possibly others (maybe like trips to Chi for fam) that's the update
-
QUOTE (fathom @ May 21, 2009 -> 01:31 PM) That 22 million is way, way too much. would you feel different if the Pads sent 4-5 mil back so the average salary is about the same through 2013

QUOTE (shipps @ May 21, 2009 -> 01:30 PM) MY GAWD JAKE....MAKE A f***ING DECISION...I f***ING LOVE YOU...JAY CUTLER LOVES YOU...THE SAN DIEGO ZOO IS OVERRATED I WAS JUST THERE...NICK SWISHER ISNT HERE...WHAT MORE DO YOU NEED... lol, it seems that he made it, if Sox pay he's on the mound against Pit this weekend
-
OK, so the Sox have roughly 40 mil coming off the books this offseason and they have guys they have to reup with, etc... so adding Peavy and let's say 10 m in new salary they still have 12 m in flex,
-
lol, a commercial on the radio just got cut off and there was silence, I thought the Ranger was going to come on and give the decision

QUOTE (jphat007 @ May 21, 2009 -> 01:24 PM) I dont think this team is good enough to come back from a 6.5 game deficit. I'm not so sure this is a good idea. well if you believe the rumors he would be here 10, 11, 12 and 13 with MB for a good portion of that with the Sox having Danks under at a minimum arb, so it's not all about this year. Also, if they could get within 3-4 on their own and set their rotation so the Tigers see a good helping of MB, Danks and Peavy they have a shot
-
QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ May 21, 2009 -> 01:23 PM) If we had put a good showing today against the Twins, I would have to imagine that could have helped a little. He wouldn't make this 4 year decision based on one game with the back of our rotation starter going against a team we already won the series against

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 21, 2009 -> 01:22 PM) Look at how good Zito, Hudson, and Mulder were when they went to the NL. Sure, there is something to the ERA goes up in the AL, that'll happen when you face no pitchers, but a lot is being made out of nothing. In the end, it was about green, and the Sox had to know it'd come to that option. great point, and some people act like the Sox offense won't be hitting in the Cell and the other factors don't even out. I know it's a crude stat, but ERA+ helps guide some of this. His fb/gb ratio isn't the best but his K ratio is very good.

QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ May 21, 2009 -> 01:19 PM) Went to lunch...anything new? there was an update that Peavy wants the option picked up as a starter, which I would imagine would be trips to Chicago for his family, etc. and someone said Peavy didn't show up to a Pads gym or something (that was out of SD)
-
QUOTE (Markbilliards @ May 21, 2009 -> 01:18 PM) Like an extra point and a half on his ERA once he leaves Petco and comes to the AL at the cell? but if the other teams pitcher pitches at the cell too, so it evens out.
-
QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ May 21, 2009 -> 01:17 PM) Has a player ever waited this long to make this decision. zoinks McGriff with the Cubs, Giles with the Red Sox last year, Schilling at one point... Peavy isn't even taking that long and it seems like he's made it, option and some trips to Chicago for his family (my guess at the other "sweets" he wants) and its yes, no option, then no

Sox vs Twins game thread May 21, 2009

ha, Farmer totally froze up and couldn't get a word out. -
QUOTE (G&T @ May 21, 2009 -> 01:13 PM) If KW went into this without thinking he'd have to pick up the option then he wasn't thinking things through. There are certain players the organization is willing to make a leap for, and Peavy is one of them. exactly. If this rumor is true then it's done either way. If he's been working on this for as long as some say it probably crept into his and the owners minds that this was going to be an issue.
-
QUOTE (WCSox @ May 21, 2009 -> 01:10 PM) Not really. It would mean that the Sox wouldn't be able to re-sign Buehrle, but this isn't the $100 million that the Rockies gave Hampton or anything. I'm not sure if I would do this, but it's financially-doable. I agree, like I said, the Pads could always throw in a little cash to make the average salary the same and they get a better PTBNL
-
this could be the PTBNL issue. Basically if Sox pick up the option and Pads send zero money then it's a lower quality prospect list, if the Pads send like 5 mil to make the average salary the same it's a better list

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 21, 2009 -> 01:02 PM) If its purely about money I think the Sox are tempted by it. 2013 is 4 years away, by then most of their big contracts will be off the books. They will have plenty of time to structure their payroll around Peavy's salary. But thats just how I think. it helps that he would be 31 that year and not mid 30's... I would imagine this has already been decided amongst the Sox brass, there's no way this caught them off guard, the thing that intrigues me is the "for starters" part
