QUOTE(Queen Prawn @ Jan 30, 2005 -> 11:10 AM) We were going to rent that last night, but instead rented "Sky Captain, World of Tomorrow" (I think that was the name) and "Starsky and Hutch." Watched Sky Captain - I enjoyed it . Haven't watch Starsky yet though. Starsky and Hutch was funny as hell.

QUOTE(winodj @ Jan 30, 2005 -> 10:25 PM) Good for the Iraqis. Now lets just hope that the following weeks and months can be as good as today. Because if they aren't, an election resulting in chaos can only be bad for democracy in the middle east. Hot damn I agree with Wino.

Seeing how more and more Japanese automakers are locating plants in the U.S. ( I think Toyota alone has brought some 200K worth of jobs to America ) and U.S. automakers are locating more and more capacity in Mexico and Canada is the line between "American" and "Foregin" cars getting blurred?

Holy s***! Someone hit the jackpot.

QUOTE(Cerbaho-WG @ Jan 30, 2005 -> 03:21 PM) History says otherwise. Maybe instead of trying to degrade me you should actually hone yourself on US history. Our nation has had many instances, some which LCR mentioned, in which we vehemently disagree with the leaders of certain countries and implant our own instead. f***, calm down because I am disagreeing with you. I say something humorous which I KNOW is true, and you flip out as if I just liquidated an orphanage. Stop being so naive thinking that the US has never made any mistakes when it comes to foreign policy and you just might see the world in a completely different eye. I just wish you people would stop totally focusing on the negatives of what's going on out there. It seems to me that you people are hoping for bad things to happen so you can gloat about how wrong we are to be there. If you're opposed to the war and our presence there that's fine and I respect your opinions but the fact is that we're there and we're not leaving until they can handle it on their own. Maybe I would respect you guys more if every now and again you would talk about something good that's happening over there instead of zeroing in on the violence.

QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Jan 30, 2005 -> 02:40 PM) I'm just saying I wonder if the US would continue its lip service to "democracy" by overthrowing yet another leader if the elections did not play out the way they wanted them to. And according to reports, in places like Fallujah [re: the BBC] the amount of voters seen there can be "counted on one hand" It is good that the Iraqis are voting -- but just color me more than a bit cynical about how much the US and their funded "Friends of Democracy" group has to do with the election of Allawi. Oh they are entirely responsible for it. We're the ones that toppled Saddam Hussein paving the way for this election to happen in the first place. This election was supposed to be a national disaster and it wasn't. The Iraqi forces were supposed to be colluding with terrorists to sabotage the election and according to US commanders on the ground they stood their ground and successfully secured more than 7000 polling places nationwide. The "pundits" all thought that people were going to either boycott the election entirely or be scared off by terrorists. Turnout was higher that that of the U.S. election and under far more adverse circumstances. I think this is a really good day for the Middle East and for the rest of the world as well.

QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Jan 30, 2005 -> 02:19 PM) Hypothetical. Can we discuss overthrowing "democratically elected Allende" in Chile or our interventions in Greece or what we did in Guatemala etc.? Because there are numerous times where democratically elected leaders were ousted from their positions and authoritarians whom the US liked were installed. Is something like that happening here? Thought so. Is Allawi anything like Pinochet? Thought so. Why is it that any measure of success in Iraq is downplayed and ridiculed by you and terrorist actions trumpeted about as loud as possible?

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jan 30, 2005 -> 02:11 PM) Umm, I didn't read the article, but a little over a week ago O'Reilly was talking about US Hate in other countries and was saying a lot of nice things about Canada because on the most part they actually like America and Americans. It was a pretty damn high percentage compared to Europe, mainly France. I saw the same thing. Oreilly doesn't like the Canadian media and factions of the government, you know, like the one that called President Bush an "idiot". He thinks very highly of the Canadian people and if any of you bothered to watch his show you'd see the same thing.

QUOTE(Cerbaho-WG @ Jan 30, 2005 -> 02:08 PM) I am trying so hard not to laugh. f***, didn't work. Say what you want but shrill leftist monday morning QB's like you with your hypothetical bulls*** really don't carry a whole lot of weight.

QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Jan 30, 2005 -> 01:32 PM) Looks like Allawi is gonna get in most likely [he's also the US picked candidate after their candidate in Ahmed Chalabi was found to be an Iranian spy]...This is pure conjecture but I wonder what would have happened if a candidate that the US did not like won the election? We would respect the result of the election and do whatever was necessary to see the new government be successful.

QUOTE(KipWellsFan @ Jan 30, 2005 -> 01:21 PM) I think it turns out that only 60% of voters turned out. both cbc and fox report that Right you are, appears that that 72% number was an initial estimate.
-
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,145825,00.html 72 percent of registerd voters turned out. That's north of 8 million people. All of this in the face of death threats and bombings. I'm really glad to see that these people appreciate and are taking advantage of the opportunity to vote for the 1st time in 50 some years over there. I only wish that U.S. voters appreciated their freedom to vote this much. A little rain or snow is enough to keep a good many Americans from the polls.
-
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,145808,00.html There are some attacks being reported but this seems to be going far better than most had hoped. The Iraqi people are showing some real courage today going out and voting despite insurgent threats to "wash the streets with the blood of voters". One of the most inspiring things about this was a report I heard that literally thousands of people are walking several miles in some cases to go to the polls. If this election can go fairly well and they can get some good turnout then maybe Iraq can truly turn a corner.

This is from a country who, until very recently, allowed Al Jazerra on its airwaves and banned Fox News. f*** them.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 28, 2005 -> 09:38 AM) It lacks the usual effort you would give if it was like someone from Hamas getting wasted or the offspring of a DEM getting busted for slashing tires. By the way, it was public records that revealed the payments. Our government cannot hide most spending from our eyes. At this point, the payments are not considered illegal, they just raise an ethical debate. I also would prefer to not call it a Bush initiative. Calling it a government initiative better frames the debate. Our government had a policy they were wishing to promote, they paid commentators to write nice things about it. Is that a good use of tax payers money? Yeah, but hearing about someone from Hamas getting wasted brightens my day ( Damn I miss I4E ) Like I said. I think this is a wrongful use of taxpayer money.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 28, 2005 -> 09:32 AM) To swerve this from political swipes, what should the governments role in propaganda be? Should our government be allowed to advertise, plant stories, pay commentators, etc. to champion government policies? As I mentioned earlier, I doubt Dubya and Chaney thought this stuff up on their own. If it didn't happen under Clinton, I will be really shocked. I don't see this as much as a DEM or GOP issue, but a role of our government. I do believe it is appropriate for the government to promote policies and programs. Perhaps they could do even better when someone like Lesko can write a book that lists government programs and make money. Taking ads out, printing up fliers in various languages, hosting community outreach events all seem like valid uses of our taxes. Paying someone to write an opinion piece just seems wrong. When I listen to a commentator, I want to believe it is not a paid political commercial. I understand that Fox panders to the right for better ratings and more money, like the LA Times does for the left. I would hate to believe in addition to the advertising, their staff was being paid by the White House. Further, it's our White House regardless if we voted for the President or not. His duty is to all Americans. Again, this issue highlights the b.s. in our current political climate. Defend anything "your" guy does and attack anything "my" guy does. It's dividing the country. This shouldn't be a partisan attack on the GOP, but rather a taxpayer's attack on the government for wasting our tax dollars. Can anyone justify the government paying a columnist? There is no justification for this. It's flat out wrong and even the biggest Republican around here ( me ) wont dispute that. It sounds striking like Chicago machine politics to me.

QUOTE(winodj @ Jan 28, 2005 -> 09:31 AM) And now levity: Q: How many Bush Administration officials does it take to screw in a light bulb? A: None. There is nothing wrong with the light bulb; its conditions are improving every day. Any reports of its lack of incandescence are a delusional spin from the liberal media. That light bulb has served honorably, and anything you say undermines the lighting effect. Why do you hate freedom? LOL!

QUOTE(The Critic @ Jan 28, 2005 -> 08:28 AM) Well, so much for optimism. Read in the Sun-Times today that both sides agree that no progress has been made and no future talks are scheduled. The talks scheduled for today were cancelled because both sides feel they're going nowhere. Thed NHL deserves to die. Both sides of this dispute are nothing more than a bunch of money hungry children.

My fav South Park episode has got to be the one with the "Death Camp of Tolerance" Mr. Garrison just gets outrageously flaming gay with Mr. Slave in front of the kids and they send all the kids to a concentration camp for being intolerant. LOL! A close second was the episode "The Passion of the Jew" where Mel Gibson goes insane ending up with him crapping on Cartman's face. LOL!

QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 28, 2005 -> 09:15 AM) How noble, the administration is only paying off poor commentators. And we thought they didn't have a plan for helping the poor. LOL. They paid off minor columnists, but nothing for Rush? Again, shouldn't he be pissed? You know, I little something for the effort? If you were looking to pay someone shouldn't you go to the top? Isn't that a better use of our tax dollars? If the administration is going to pay off columnists, I want the best value and Rush and Hannity would be the best value. Quit wasting our money on minor league columnists in 50 papers. As I mentioned, I will be shocked if the Bush Administration invented this. Give it time, someone will unearth other payments from the Clinton White House. Nuke, care to write what your pithy commentary if this was Clinton? You'd be all over his ass for wasting tax dollars that should have gone to fighting terrorists or something. I didn't say I agreed with this if it's in fact true? Cause I don't. That pithy enough for you?

Ok. This gets my vote for stupidest, most pointless, dumbass thread ever in the history of Soxtalk.
