QUOTE(bschmaranz @ Nov 29, 2005 -> 10:43 AM) I dunno, can Konerko feed his child on 60 million? Perhaps he'll go to the welfare line next to Latrell Sprewell. Well, there's always money in the banana stand.

While I think Steve Phillips is an idiot, and if he's ever right its by sheer luck, I wouldn't be surprised if Boston gets in the bidding for Pauly. Especially if they are able to unload Manny "Being Manny" Ramirez.

QUOTE(LDF @ Nov 29, 2005 -> 10:17 AM) so the sox finally has put the money on the table. i hope it is true and i hope the money is fair and the sox trying to low ball him. If the Sox offer is indeed 4 yrs/52 million (as was reported), I'd say they're far from low balling him.

Ozzie is right up there with some of my all-time favorite Sox. Probably my favorite Sox manager too. But he was not a HOF caliber player. A good one, but not a great one.

Just bought the DVD. I must say, MLB did a lot better than I thought they would. I originally thought that the Sox season DVD would be far better than this one, but they've got their work cut out for them. Of course, it comes with the video that most of you watched the other night, but I especially liked the special features. It includes: The original broadcasts of the final outs of the ALDS and ALCS clinchers Jenks Game 1 performance Konerko's grand slam, Pods walk off in Game 2 Blum's extra inning homer in Game 3 The final inning of Game 4 with the celebration afterwards (not seen before locker room footage) ***Best part of all of these is that with the exception of the ALDS clincher (Berman) and the Blum homer (Buck), they dubbed in Rooney and Farmer for all the other highlights*** Other special features include the trophy presentation, a TWIB flashback of Ozzie getting caught by the hidden ball trick (twice) and highlights of Game 1 of the '59 World Series. Overall, its a must have! Hope you all enjoy it as much as I have.

White Sox acquire Jim Thome per ESPNnews

QUOTE(chisoxt @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 05:21 AM) People forget that Thome is 35 years old-an age when bat spead can go south. IMO, this was a terrible deal....Why trade two of your better prospects and ARow for a guy whose health is questionable, but also is old? Trading your best young pitchers only makes sense whern you , A. get something of value in return, and B. have an intention of signing Guys like Buehrle, Garland, Contreras to long term deals. I doubt that will happen anytime soon. It seems as though a world championship hasn't changed Kenny....he still has an infatuation with over-the-hill players and a penchant for over paying to get them. Unfortunately, the rest of the baseball GMs know this which is why they typically pants him on deals. I thought that Kenny had a terrific off-season last year beacuse for once in his life, he was patient and let the deals come to him and not vice versa. Who else were the Phils going to stick Thome with? He had a no-trade contract and indicated that there were only two teams he would play for. Wow, I don't know where to start. I guess my first question is, when was the last time Kenny got "pantsed" on a deal? Outside of the Todd Ritchie deal, its hard to find a deal where somebody totally got the best of Kenny. Yes, some of his deals didn't work out. But that doesn't mean he was wrong at the time for making them. As far as the part about Kenny waiting for deals to come to him last offseason, I'd like to find out how you know this? All indications were that Kenny sought out the Lee for Podsednik deal. Yes, Thome isn't exactly young, and yes, he did have some health issues last year. But he says he's healthy. Kenny says he's healthy. His physical said he's healthy. And if you base his performance on all the years he was healthy (basically every year before last), the guy should put up his usual big numbers. Many often forget how poor our offense was throughout a good portion of the regular season. We seemed to lack consistant run production and guys who could get on base. A healthy Thome should fill both of these needs. Yes, this is all speculation. But its probably safer to assume that Thome will perform at his normal level or close to it than to assume that these two minor leaguers will amount to anything, or that Aaron Rowand will become more than an average player. -
For what its worth, "Lower beer prices" would be my second choice.

QUOTE(Felix @ Nov 27, 2005 -> 10:49 PM) I'd rather win than make money anyday, although making money usually leads to winning, if you are smart on how you spend it. Actually, winning usually leads to making money...but I get what you're saying.

QUOTE(greg775 @ Nov 26, 2005 -> 09:51 PM) I used to love Thome but he really truly sucked last year when he wasn't hurt. I hope he hasn't hit the brick wall career wise. For a long time I was dying for him to be a Sox. Now what a question mark. Not only his health but are any of you worried he can't hit anymore? I mean he truly was pathetic last season. Also will miss Aaron. Wow what a performer. I do trust Kenny, however, after bringing us a title. This doesn't help our smart ball attack, however, does it? Thome is another plodder like C. Lee was. A couple things: 1) Thome was playing hurt last year. His injury didn't just come out of nowhere. He tried to play through it until he couldn't anymore. He actually had a DL stint for the same injury before coming back. Of course, he ended up going back on and ending his season. If he's as healthy as they say he is, he should be back to the old Thome. 2) Basically, Thome is replacing Everett. Anderson is (most likely) replacing Rowand. The philosophy isn't really changing. Just think of it as the same type of ball, with a much more productive Carl Everett. -
QUOTE(3E8 @ Nov 26, 2005 -> 02:29 PM) This is one of the most outrageous claims I've seen in awhile. You mean, since the 2004 Cubs starting rotation was deemed God's answer to pitching by most "experts"?

QUOTE($I Need Money$ @ Nov 25, 2005 -> 10:55 PM) Well now that we have no center fielder, why not bring Jurassic Carl back? Come on now knowing how KW loves him so much why not bring him back? Yes he swings at everything but he did help us this year. Or maybe we can bring Jose Valentin back and let him play CF. Yikes!

You know, if you want team that chooses prospects over proven commodities, you can always root for the Royals or D-Rays. And this isn't exactly a new philosophy for the Sox. A large portion of our team consists of guys we obtained while sacrificing prospects. Prospects don't always pan out. Hell, most of them don't. Sorry, but I'll choose the "WIN NOW" mentality.

Well, the trade is official! Trib: Thome trade a done deal Although, on an interesting note, nowhere in the article does it mention Gio as being part of the deal. It just says a player to be named later. Is it still expected to be Gio? Am I missing something here? -

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Nov 25, 2005 -> 11:39 AM) Actually I have been asking myself this question... Why are you freaking out about this deal so badly? We get it, you don't like the trade. That's fine. But why act like Kenny Williams ran over your handicapped grandmother in the crosswalk of a schoolzone, and then backed up to hit her again, all of the while dragging the World Series trophy tied to his bumper. They traded him the day before Thanksgiving, for christ sake! Kenny's going to hell! -

QUOTE(whitesoxmanager @ Nov 25, 2005 -> 11:27 AM) ask yourselves this question: if you just won the WS with a bunch of guys that rolled thru the division and then went 11-1 in the playoffs DO YOU NEED TO GET RID OF ANYONE THAT WAS AN INTEGRAL PART? I asked myself, and myself said "yes, if that player was expendable and the player we were getting in return could make us better." -
I DVR'd the video, and I just finished watching it. Very impressed. to MLB! I also have a newly-found appreciation for Willie "Rooney's Replacement" Harris!

Every time somebody brings up this Dayn Perry character, I always ask myself the same question: Who the hell is Dayn Perry and why should I care what he thinks? Not to mention, from the looks of his picture, the guy looks like he just came out of a "Right Said Fred" video. -

QUOTE(whitesoxmanager @ Nov 24, 2005 -> 04:08 PM) My take is that KW & the White Sox got greedy! Yes, they got greedy. They want more championships. I'm pretty greedy for those too. Speaking of being greedy, that turkey smells awefully good. -

QUOTE(whitesoxmanager @ Nov 24, 2005 -> 03:24 PM) I just remember all to well what happened to the Chicago Bears the year after the superbowl when Wilbur Marshall didnt get paid and left to go to the Redskins. A little different scenario but the same gut wrenching feeling! Well, I'm sure we'd have felt alot better about losing Marshall if we got something in return. In his case, the Bears got nothin. In the Sox case, we got a guy who can solidify the middle of our order and potentially hit around 40 bombs while being a great clubhouse guy as well. -

QUOTE(whitesoxmanager @ Nov 24, 2005 -> 03:24 PM) this is very true and thanks for the guarantee. but how do you as a fan answer this question: That the team that just won the 2005 WS isnt good enough to win it in 2006? This is the burning question across the board in each and every player on our team right now and is definitely being discussed with those who talk to AROW today. HI8IS if someone told me that you were now a member of the cardinals fan club I would be just as outraged. I'm sure most of them understand that Kenny is trying to make the team better. Its not saying that the same group of guys can't win another championship. Its saying that we want to better our chances of winning another championship. All these players want to win, and if they honestly believe that Jim Thome makes them a worse team, then they're delusional. Sure, they'll miss Aaron. But they'll move on. Things like this happen all the time. The teams that have continued success are always trying to get better. Its the ones that rest on their laurels that come and go. Take the Red Sox for instance. They trade a fan favorite in Nomar Garciaparra because they thought it was better for the team...and the rest is history. Believe me, I'm going to miss Rowand too. But in the end, I want to win and I think Thome can only help us if he's healthy. And I believe many of the players will feel the same. -

QUOTE(whitesoxmanager @ Nov 24, 2005 -> 12:10 PM) I cant believe they did this to AROW the day before THANKSGIVING! WTF? I AM ONE PISSED OFF SOXFAN! We just blew out the heart of the team! I cant believe you guys arent outraged at the move and the timing of the move! THIS IS TOTAL CRAP BS! I think you're just slightly overrating Aaron Rowand. I liked the guy too, but come on. The guy was pretty mediocre. And who gives a rats ass that we did it the day before Thanksgiving? He'll still have his money and his health. You're getting way too sentimental about this. -
