I like seeing Carter with a 3-5 game. That guy has the ability to be a middle of the order MONSTER.

After he loaded the bases Jose really seemed to wake up (also coincides with when Coop came out to talk to him) because his stuff and tempo has been far far better and the results have shown.

QUOTE(DABearSoX @ Apr 9, 2007 -> 06:01 PM) So i was going to make a reminder for myself that the game is on WGN tomorrow, (I have comcast) so i clicked on the find more of this program. So i found MLB Gameday is on comcast still and its still there free preview time period.....so looks like I get to watch the game tonight.....does anyone know what is goin on here? Ya, the free preview was extened so it ends a little later on this week.

No....I expect the Sox to leave Oakland with a .500 record.

Rumor or not, the divorce can't be the reason his stuff doesn't look near as sharp. Hopefully he'll turn things around but there is a lot less life to his fork and his fastball thus far early in the season. I remember reading he was throwing pretty hard in spring but it definitely doesn't seem to be the case from watching this game so far (although he's not doing too badly).

QUOTE(fathom @ Apr 8, 2007 -> 12:21 PM) Santana doesn't count any in rule of managing. Someone should have flooded the field today so it was postponed. I've said this for 4 years now, but Santana is the only pitcher we face who I expect to beat us. Haha. Ya, I can't remember ever feeling this way about a pitcher. I guess the exception would be Pedro who I always felt that when his prime was pretty much an auto loss (especially if he weren't on the Expos for part of his prime).

QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Apr 8, 2007 -> 12:06 PM) Long impressive so far thru three innings, 1 run and 3 k's. Maybe his stuff is back cause when he is on, he has a deadly two pitch combination: mid-to high-90's fastball and a hard 12-6 curve. Nice to see the Sox have Floyd on the same schedule as Danks which is very smart, because if you were a betting man you'd say that if the Sox were going to ever need Floyd up as a starter it would be to replace Danks (with them figuring Danks needs more seasoning). I agree on Long. He was really tired last season and it showed and hopefully the full off-season has him fresh because with his stuff there is no reason he shouldn't succeed. Plus I like that the Sox are stretching him out as a starter (even though he projects as a reliever) because it will force him to actually develop some other pitchers which will help him a lot once he shifts over to the pen (where he'd only rely on his two pitches and make little development outside of that).

QUOTE(fathom @ Apr 8, 2007 -> 12:17 PM) Yeah, I actually think AJP didn't help him out much this inning with the pitch selection to Mauer/Cuddyer with two strikes. Obviously, Danks has to fine-tune his control. However, his stuff seems to be decent. I'd say it's 60/40 that he can be on the team this full season. I agree, there is obviously the chance that he just flat out doesn't have the command yet for this level. He seems to have the approach which is a positive and I think it also is valid to note that every time he went to a new level he tended to have an adjustment period (which should be expected) and it should definitely be expected when we are talking about him coming up to the majors for the first time. Overall I'm real excited to have him in the system and on the staff although its still too early to pencil him into the rotation for the next 5-10 years. QUOTE(fathom @ Apr 8, 2007 -> 12:19 PM) I would love to say that you should never bunt prior to the 7th inning when your team has 200 homer potential. Not against Johan...I have zero problem moving guys into scoring position when a guy gets on just for the sheer hope you can put together another hit and get a run someway/somehow.

QUOTE(fathom @ Apr 8, 2007 -> 12:14 PM) It's going to be a long year if Santana makes us his b**** again. Its not like he didn't do the same when the Sox won the world series. Who gives a s***, you just take try to pick up a win against him or hold it tight till it gets to the pen once or twice this season. The Sox see him too much and Johan is flat in these guys heads. The club has almost no shot against him.

Who cares. As much as I hate to say it this game wasn't about getting the win, its about letting Danks get out there have some success and obviously he'll have some trouble and after the game Coop and AJ will sit down with him and help teach him some things and continue to work on his approach. The kid was making his debut against the best pitcher in baseball.

QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Apr 8, 2007 -> 12:05 PM) But I want Cy McCarthy! He's going to win 1 Cy Young and 15 Brandon McCarthys! /giggling about the naysayers from that trade That said, Danks is looking pretty damn good out there right now and is holding his own against one of the top divisional teams so far. That trade is the type of deal that I think the odds are greater that it works out even to a steal for the Sox as opposed to the other way around. The Sox got two very talented arms and a very raw 3rd arm while giving up one good arm but without the upside of the two arms the Sox got. I can't believe how people could be so upset with that trade but I understand since Bmac was one of the first home grown pitchers to come up to the big league level and have actually have some success.

QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Apr 8, 2007 -> 12:00 PM) And Danks has a NO HITTER through 3. ASSHOLE....I should ban you for that.

QUOTE(G&T @ Apr 8, 2007 -> 11:58 AM) Another K for Danks. Attacked the zone. That was a nasty change. I really like Danks. He gets guys to miss the sweet spot on a bat and that is a good skill to have. Obviously we'll see him have his rough days and he has a lot left to learn but he's got a lot of potential and almost as importantly he's got a good head on his shoulders (and with pitching, you better have a good head on your shoulders, especially if your planning on having any sort of success at a young age).

I don't think anyone was expecting a 7 inning outing out of him. He'll probably go about 5. The Sox are going to be careful with this kid and considering his nerves I'd be surprised to see him go more than 5-6.

Changeup....He GAWN

One thing about Danks is he has a great pickoff move. So keep an eye on that this season. But he's definitely got some nerves and its effecting his release point on the curve and my guess is this will be a pretty long day. But its his first start and this is outing is all about getting his feet wet. The thing I like is even with him throwing predominantly fastballs, it seems as if the hitters have trouble squaring them up (so if he does have a couple good secondary pitches getting in the zone it will be even harder for teams to square him up). I noticed the same thing all spring. There was a decent curve to Hunter...now you show the same one but dump it right onto the plate.

QUOTE(caulfield12 @ Apr 8, 2007 -> 11:29 AM) JD Version April 2005? Well, those who weren't willing to give him $45 million for 3 years are being validated so far. He's been in a bit of a funk as he got a little pull happy when he was got so red hot during spring training and has to work his way back and get that timing back. It happens but right now he's definitely not on and needs to be real focused with going to RF.

The weekly renditions of Mario Scalise, Jason Gage and Alex Ernst have begun as the crew of the Southside Report (formerly known as Soxtalk On the Air) discuss the Sox start to the season as well as breakdown the keys for the 2007 ball club. Jason and Alex also provide the FutureSox report, a 5-10 minute weekly spotlight on the minor leagues. To finish it all off, they all go out on a limb and make there season long predictions. Listen Here Plus keep an eye out for the new Southside Report page that will be launched in the next 2 weeks featuring archived versions of all the shows as well as a built in media player so you can listen to the show directly from the front page.

Danks can throw a bit harder than that gun was showing but its cold out so the pitchers may not be as lose but it looks like the gun is 2-3 clicks slow, especially based on Santana's velocity thus far.
-
The results were nice for John, who settled down a lot thanks to Castillo not being patient enough in his leadoff AB. However, Hawk is dead on the money that Danks is going to have to get his other stuff over. But he did a nice job of keeping his heater down in the zone after he settled down and if he can start getting his curve for a strike it should allow him to ocassionally show the high fastball and just blow it by guys (kind of like how Zito does).

QUOTE(shipps @ Apr 7, 2007 -> 06:03 PM) Having gas at work really sux.My stomach keeps on rumbling and my co-workers are giving me nothing but awkward silence. It could be worse, Mario would probably be giggling like a little girl going Jeff made a smelly.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Apr 7, 2007 -> 04:55 PM) Flash -- Like others have said, Death Proof dragged a little bit. There was a lot of talking -- some of which was funny, other moments just sort of dragged (hate being redundant) -- but I thought the car scene made it worth it. Overall, it's a movie you have to see. The fake trailers are hilarious, as are some of the other little commercials. The spots where they inserted "Missing Reel" were pretty funny, too. I also enjoyed the many ass and boob shots -- funny and good at the same time. The whole flick would have been awesome if it weren't for Quentin Terrintino being such an overhyped director or producer or whatever he is. The first movie was fantastic and the different trailers they showed were freaking hillarious. Really enjoyed it. The second movie was one of the biggest pieces of garbage I've ever seen for about 40 minutes and than you have that 10 minute car chase that was absolutely awesome. However, the 40 minutes before it truly did little to set up the sweet car chase. Quentin's flick would have been good if they showed both car scene's and just took a few minutes to set em up, imo. Still, its the type of movie I'll watch when it comes out on DVD again, this time skipping through almost all of Quentin's movie. I definitely recommend the flick though.

f***...we lost Beas apparently. At least according to the head guy over at the Rivals Iowa site. Just great....we upgrade with a new coach but lose out on what would have given us 3 four star players if Smith sticks around (between Gattens, Smith, and Hamga and Hamga gave us the possibility of a couple other 4 star guys). But we have absolute no talent coming in this year (well not much) unless of course Lick can get a couple of his guys from Butler over to Iowa.
