I would take him in a heart beat. He is one of the most succuessful front office guys in baseball and for a long time. The guy just wins - people may not like his approach but his track record is pretty good.
-
But other than last year, he's consistently put up very good OBP's, so in this offense with a ton of firepower around him, there is a value in that...let alone fact that he hits RHP pretty good. Joc is probably a better get - but maybe Joc is going to get more years and more money and Sox didn't want to do that....but Eaton as the worst player on the everyday lineup is a-okay with me.

Good day to highlight how cool it was seeing two of the Big schools beat perennial powers. I'm biased so liked Hawkeyes taking down UNC in a game where Garza had a pedestrian performance. Similarly, I presume Illini fan are pretty jacked over that bounce back win over Duke. Two huge wins against the 2 marquee programs in the ACC (by 2 of the good but maybe not marquee programs in the BIG - albeit both are really damn good this year).

Sox sign Adam Eaton 1 year, $7m plus option
Chisoxfn replied to Greek-konerko's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I don't even know Eaton's politics? I just know Drake LaRoche situation with Eaton and some of that stuff. I know that before the Drake LaRoche fiasco Eaton was pretty well liked by Sox fans although there was some commentary around his time in Arizona and maybe he had too much of an ego or something for being such a young player. Either way - that was a long time ago and he's been a professional with the Nats ever since and people mature. And yes - I actually am human enough that I don't think someone is a (good or bad) person because of who they voted for. I may not agree with that person - but it DOES NOT make someone a good or bad person because you voted for Biden and/or Trump. I'm going to end with that but enough is enough on the TLR stuff and the Eaton stuff. Its absurd. I've made it clear - people have an issue with TLR - put it in the thread from when he's hired - don't dump it into every thread out there. -

None of this is helpful. -

If he can bounce back from a rough 2020 and be healthy, this is a solid move (from an on field perspective). -
Sox acquire Lance Lynn for Dane Dunning and Avery Weems
Chisoxfn replied to KrankinSox's topic in Pale Hose Talk
To your point - Lynn's contract is so good for the next year, this deal basically puts the Sox in the same spot as they were entering the day, which is having a ton of flexibility. What is to say they aren't pushing their chips forward and plan on leveraging another prospect or two, plus payroll to get another front line, yet cost controlled starter with the intent to eventually replace Lynn with one of their younger pitchers who hopefully takes a step forward (Kopech, Cease, Croquet). Could the Sox land Darvish without giving up one of those other names, but more going down an alternative path - I don't know, but whose to say they can't go get one more front of the rotation type of guy at this point. Or maybe they figure they are buying themselves a year while they try to lock down Gio a bit longer and better see what they have in others while maintaining massive flexibility. Like I said - I think I would have preferred other options, but I don't think Dunning for Lynn is a massive overpay or anything of that elk. -
I'm not going to get worked up on random twitter people - but if Sox could have had Yu and Heyward for DD or Lance Lynn for DD...since It isn't my cash, I'll take Yu/Heyward all day and every day.

Sox acquire Lance Lynn for Dane Dunning and Avery Weems
Chisoxfn replied to KrankinSox's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Lynn is a good pitcher. Older and a one year deal, so I don't love that part, but the rotation is clearly significantly better and who is to say the Sox can't keep Lynn over time (and it turns out not to be a rental deal). That said - I prefer a route that you use Dunning to get someone more cost-controlled, but no arguing that the major league team took a step forward near term (more importantly they kept Kopech - who was the one arm I didn't want to give up). -
I can understand that. Yu has a significantly better track record, but he's also 4 years better. Bauer was ultra hype...didn't live up to it, but now (outside of his post-trade stint with the Reds - that first time) has put up monster years 2 of the last 3 years (2.21 ERA in 2018; 1.73 ERA in 2020). That is just sick. 2019 was mixed - solid with Cleveland (but not special) and a train wreck with the Reds (no clue what happened there). Bauer is also much younger and I feel hasn't peaked and could be to the point where you are looking at a 3-4 year window with just stellar ace type stat. Yu - Has had health issues, but clearly still knows how to pitch and has very good stuff (despite being older with quite a bit of mileage on that arm) and is also coming off a stellar 2020 season. Lets be honest - both would be good problems to have for the Sox (and clear upgrades over anyone not named Giolito and arguably as good, if not better than Gio.
-
In that case - even more confusing cause that makes literally zero sense.
-
Exactly - seems like your total $ spend is similar and you get 2 better players (Bauer > Darvish; Joc > Heyward). And I keep Dunning (a +). Now maybe I'm underselling just how much cash the Cubs are going to send and/or the reality is free agency is a crapshoot so Sox don't feel very good about any chance at getting Bauer, in which case maybe a Bauer / Pederson scenario at similar payroll costs is just not realistic.
-
This is where I keep coming back to...unless Cubs are sending a ton of cash and the actual prospect cost is minimum, I just don't see what makes this move so appealing (at face value). It would seem if the Sox are going to spend that kind of money - why not just get Bauer at the big cost and Pederson at a more affordable shorter term AAV (you probably end up with a similar all-in cost spend and don't give up any prospects and get 2 better players).

Thoughts and prayers with your dad, you and your whole family. Wishing him a speedy recovery!!!

Part of it is defense is really hard in this no crowd world (just think what that means in regards bears offense). I just don’t think Pagano runs much any sort of a real advantageous scheme and don’t like his very conservative approach. It would make sense for a defense that has minimum talent - not this unit.
-
Yes
-
Not me - I saw another good game out of Mitch and offense did nice job. Could they have done even better - sure, but overall that was a pretty darn good offensive performance. I agree Pagano is not good and in general leaves a ton on field. Defense played very poor. Lots of miscommunications on field and soft coverage and yet another week of non existent pass coverage. I hope Mitch keeps playing well

I have been a Miller complainer for years, but I felt this was a pretty damning quote (if it is grounded in some truth). And honestly - I feel like to some extent it really wouldn't surprise me. https://twitter.com/i/web/status/1334950466095095810

Can someone explain to me why Phillies would be looking to dump Wheeler? He pitched fantastically last year and I wouldn't say his contract is an albatross. I get it if they want to rebuild or something, but I assume they still would expect some prospects headed their way. Don't get me wrong, I'd like to get Wheeler - I just don't quite see why Philly would do it and if they are just shedding for salary sake than I don't understand why we'd trade Grandal who has a big contract tied to him as well. Or am I missing something and Wheeler is like out half of next year or something.
-
I'll go one step farther - if all the Sox did was get Bauer and just say we are going to go sit around and just grab a vet who sits in the market for RF (to platoon with Engel - not even a Joc type) - I would be 1000% exstatic. It keeps the Sox so well positioned to either make future trades at the deadline and/or bring up more waves later this year, next year, etc.

I don't know that that is someone the Rays will unlock immediately - I think Kopech is extremely special. He will unlock himself anywhere he goes and unless the Sox legitimately don't believe he has interest in baseball, I would absolutely not trade him. He is a true TOR prospect who has plenty of control left and while he may not be as helpful this year and injuries and COVID opt-out set his timeline back, having a COST CONTROLLED TOR guy like that will be huge as the Sox continue to contend and push for the series for a number of years. Kopech is on my do not trade list, unless Sox are getting a cost-controlled horse of an ace (and obviously that will take more than Kopech). Snell is good - but I don't think of him as a true-ace (but that might be because i still think aces should be able to pitch 200+ innings a year, etc). Maybe no ace will do that next year - cause we have to manage COVID workloads after a season with lighter innings pitched - but in general.

Seems like a very fair deal. I'm happy for James but will miss him and I'm sure he wouldn't have taken that same deal with Sox (if it is true) just because this enables him a bigger opportunity from a playing time perspective.
-
I'll be 100% honest - I don't have a major issue with that.

Everyone saying this team is a shitshow is wrong. This defense no-showed on Sunday night, but it is not a bad defense. They have good CB's (Fuller & Johnson) and while Eddie Jackson has been a shell of his past self, I am not going to write him off after one down year after a number of electric years (last year wasn't as good either - so there is definitely a trend) and the LB corps is still solid (Danny T is a liability in pass coverage - but almost every team has aspects of that) and the dline is solid and will be better next year with Goldman back. Mack hasn't gotten the production he should, but he is still an above average dlineman and Quinn has been off all year - but that started with him being injured to start, etc, so maybe this is one of those scenarios where a year back is a difference. They have some age issues but I could also see the defense taking a step forward (vs. back) in a year, both due to Goldman coming back (huge to have that run stuffer in the middle) combined with a more aggressive scheme that maybe maximizes the ability for Jackson/Fuller to be in more positions to make game changing plays (plus Roquan who has been a stud all year - although he has had some bouts with poor tackles). The offense - that is a shitshow - no denying that. Period.
