  1. QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 12:38 PM) I could see the Dodgers and Sox having a deal in place for Gonzalez contingent on LA not making a bigger deal. 22 minutes. This would make a lot of sense. Dodgers absolutely could use an arm and are probably a good system to be dealing with (because their trash can legitimately be another's treasure).
  2. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 12:02 PM) This should be quite a buzzer beater. You have to figure Gray and Darvish are going to go. Britton may as well. I agree...Darvish has to go and I still figure Boston is going to upgrade its pen.
  3. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 11:11 AM) Yeah, I don't get anyone expecting Holland to be traded. His last 10 starts have been every bit as bad as James Shields' starts with the White Sox. If the White Sox were actually trying to win, he would have been waived by now. Sox might just want him to eat innings, but they might be better off sticking him in the pen for the next couple weeks and see if you could somehow get value out of him there.
  4. I said it elsewhere, but Gonzalez is the only guy worth anything. He should fit in a contending teams back end of the rotation. Also helps take innings (even though he won't really factor much into the post-season (given I would be shocked if he was a top 4 starter on any contender). That said, provides rest / inning relief and also those few starts he makes (over a hole for a #5 can help get someone a wild card, etc). Don't expect a lot for him, but could be someone who fits into the 25-30 range in our system (might not be though...his injury and struggles when he tried to battle through it likely impacted his value). Holland / Pelfrey are way worse and don't deserve to be in the same sentence as Gonzalez.
  5. Holland is not going anywhere, other then in a waiver deal. Same with Clippard (presumably). Migo is the only one who should be traded between now and the deadline. Anything else is going to be waiver wire (and at best, we are talking about saving a little bit of cash and getting a pretty unimportant prospect...unless of course someone gets hot).
  6. Just training camp (and early in training camp), but supposedly Cohen has been absurdly quick and made a ton of moves (no pads, etc). Glennon has had some bad picks (driven by poor mechanics...really driven by how hard it is for him to reset given how lanky he is). Tru has had issues fumbling snaps, but otherwise it sounds like he's been pretty good (obviously we are talking training camp). Shaheen has been beasting (and shown fantastic hands). White is practicing as is Long & Trevathan (which I'll consider a positive).
  7. Bout time. I feel awful for everything that happened to him / his family.
  8. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 09:41 AM) It's not just the actual physics of the show like time and distance. It also is just that it set up years of confronting you with how impossible it was to actually suceed vs those who had power. How those pulling the strings would overwhelm you. And to an extent I see them doing the "unless you are willing to push the stakes" aspect of that, there just seems like too many deus ex machina now. Euron's fleet being this indestructible force after years of us being told the greyjoys were basically a nuisance that largely sucked at fighting (and with onlly half the island). Arya will destroy entire houses. 5 houses will fall with small army in the course of a single battle. Just wait until the fleet is burned up by dragons.
  9. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 09:24 AM) About the Lannister forces and some other things. 1) Someone asked where the Tyrell army was. I believe that they have implied that the army is somewhere nears King's Landing, so it may have been too far for them to get back to Highgarden. 2) Lannister army keeps adding allies. Its impossible to know the numbers, but a good majority of those forces attacking Highgarden could have been from Tarley. Which also could explain why Highgarden was under defended as they expected Tarley to protect them. Was this the first time we've seen Bronn since Tyrion fled? Edit: Nevermind...I forgot we saw him when Blackfish died.
  10. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 07:53 AM) To your last point, I think it's a calculated risk. Davos was able to see the plan of Dany not wanting to be known as a conquerer, so not out of the realm of thought that Cersei saw it as well. Tyrion has gotten his ass kicked in his plans so far, my one thought is that they are getting beat up so badly that they will have to go the Stannis route. Go up north to secure an ally there and fight the white walkers, win the realm over by saving it. That is what I think now. And I think Cersei knows a lot and they are taking their own risks and it is working out perfectly.
  11. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 07:13 AM) We've also hit the point where a strange phenomenon in TV occurs. People start to watch the show just to find inconsistencies. It happened with The Sopranos too. This show is even more subject to it because of its incredibly massive scale. Not me...I watch and enjoy. I wish they would have had a normal season length (vs. this 6 episode season) as I think it would have better allowed for the timing matters, but I still absolutely enjoy the show.
  12. Wohooo. You can put it on the board...yes!!! Rodon and Davidson!!!
  13. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 29, 2017 -> 10:41 AM) There were reports that he reached out to Houston and they wanted nothing to do with him. When it comes to Jay...my view is the media / someone will always air on the side of negativity. And just cause one team didn't want Jay doesn't mean the rest of the league didn't. If he wanted to, he'd be on someone's roster (not saying he'd be a starter...but he'd be somewhere).
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 28, 2017 -> 10:37 AM) The fun part will be that a guy like Jay Cutler couldn't find a job either, so it isn't just him. I don't know if that was really true. He might not have found a starting job, but I also don't think he was actively looking for back-up roles, etc, and there were mixed reports at how open he really was about looking for a job. I think the reality was Jay decided if he wasn't going to start for a contender, he was going to hang it up and enjoy his health and family (and we all know he wasn't going to start for a contender...maybe as a back-up after an injury, but not immediately).
  15. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 08:17 PM) Moncada k'ing 30-40% of the time. Jimenez and Rutherford aren't out of this world hitters at corner outfield spots, making them 1.5-2.25 fWAR guys. Kopech never finds his control or gets hurt. Cease and Giolito already with one TJS. Most of the hurlers have concerns about durability, or pitchability, as starters. Robert doesn't live up to his hype. See article above... Ok...I don't have any idea why that makes the Sox top farm system riskier then other teams top farm systems? I could go down the list with any organizations top prospects (including top 1/2) and do very similar assessments. Easy to do. No one knows. If anything, I would point out that the Sox are likely somewhat unique in how much of their farm system has been due to trades (vs. a true ability to draft and develop). So if you think of the Dodgers or Yankees, they built their farm systems from the ground up (largely).
  16. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 12:45 PM) Yep, thanks to everyone. So apparently, the White Sox have the "riskiest" Top 1/2 farm system in the history of baseball. Typical. With the least experienced (Getz) or most lackluster (Buddy Bell/Laumann still hanging on?) as key decision-makers... Why is it the riskiest?
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 12:12 PM) If you aren't able to win 90 games, you really aren't competing. An 83 win team isn't competitive in my eyes. That is an average team. Realistically we would need a ton to go right to be able to see even that .500ish team by 2019. Even the Cubs weren't above .500 until the fourth season after hitting bottom. That would put us at 2020 or even 2021 if next year is worse than this year. The Cubs not only burnt the ground down, but they were also going out and signing free agents during that span to start to build the roster. At this stage the White Sox are still burning down the house. 2018 is going to be a terrible team. IMO even with the prospects coming in, it is going to be closer to 2003 Tigers than .500. These kids will need time. I get the prospect sheets look great now, but I think a lot of people are WAY too optimistic in their hopes for these kids as a whole, and have to realize that a lot of prospect flat out fail, and for every Kris Bryant that hits from his first day in the majors, there are a lot more guys like Avi Garcia and Kyle Shwarber who spend seasons struggling as well as guys like Tim Anderson whose development is up and down. Already this year we have seen steps back from guys like Giolito, Fulmer, Anderson, and Collins. This could be blips in the road, or it could be the tip of the iceberg for them. It is a statistical certainty that some will bust. Who and how many? Well that is the fun part. The 83 win number takes context, if that number is 83 wins and we still have a top 5 farm system, guys emerging, and the arrow pointing up (even a late run), I'd call it contending vs. if you were talking about the Sox teams of the past few years, I'd totally agree. That said, I fully agree with everything you are saying...we are talking 3 years from now where maybe we have a shot at the wild card. Next year will be a disaster and the next year probably won't be much better (although we should see the arrow pointing up as enough of the top prospects have emerged and hopefully at least some of them are showing value and early returns).
  18. Let Coop work with him and see if we got something. Deal with the growing pains, but two years from now he could be a good one.
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 09:05 AM) While we may not have a great record of fixing guys, we do have one advantage - playing time. We can take guys like this and say "Here's a season or two, and a thousand PA's, go see what you can do". No one will care if we lose games if he hits .200 next year and then snaps it together afterwards. Completely agree with that. It is actually why I like what we did with Cordell and even Gillespie, since we should be able to get these guys at bats (I'd put Delmonico and obviously Davidson was a CY example (hell Avi was that this year too)) in that camp too. You never know who ends up sticking.
  20. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 08:55 AM) Free agent. Such a bummer he got hurt, he really has been a quality pitcher for the White Sox (outside of that stretch where he was pitching banged up this season).
  21. QUOTE (ChiSox1917 @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 08:51 AM) By no means a star, but Davidson looked almost out of baseball after 2014 & 2015. Had a rebound in the minors in 2016 and hasn't been completely terrible by any means this year. Davidson reminds me of one of those platoon guys that you see on a good playoff team (not anyone's star, but someone who you take advantage of the splits / match-ups and provides value).
  22. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 08:53 AM) Should be dealt? Holland, Shields, and MiGo should also be dealt. Whether they are or not is anyone's guess, personally I think only MiGo is dealt, but all three should go Do the Sox control Migo next year as well (via arbitration) or is he a free agent?
  23. QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 08:46 AM) Yeah but we also know that Fulmer could have 4 good starts and suddenly be looking like a real legit prospect again. A good couple months out of Gillaspie and the same is true. Fulmer hasn't passed the eye test in a year plus and by all accounts it sounds like Gilaspie doesn't either. Things could absolutely change, but Sox don't have a great track-record fixing guys. By the way, I'm not knocking the trade, just saying their is a reason the #74 preseason prospect was traded for Jennings. We need to hope the Sox saw some sort of mechanical flaw in Gilaspie that they think they can fix.
  24. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 08:34 AM) The White Sox just got the preseason BA #74 prospect for Dan Jennings. What the hell. Remember how fast Fullmer collapsed...well Gillespie has kind of done the same thing, but from the hitting side. That said, certainly worth the flyer.
  25. QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 08:07 AM) Holy christ is that selling low on Casey Gillaspie. Is there something we don't know about why he's struggling in AAA this year? The Rays obviously don't think that highly in him (given that they shipped him off for Dan Jennings). Certainly a nice move though by the Sox. Why not take the flyer.
