Interesting comments from Merkin. Would seem to indicate Semien is on the outs vs. Micah and that Micah will be next years starter. All of this seems premature cause I would expect a pretty intense competition during ST, but I would agree that next years starting 2B is in the minors right now.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 02:49 PM) Like I said, frees up some at bats for Semien and/or Sanchez and allows the Sox to save so money. Also, it makes it a whole less awkward than if they DFA'd him or benched him for the last month. Presume Semien is on his way up. Sanchez will follow in about a week.

Sweet. Best of luck to Gordon. I hope a change of scenery does him good. Good guy but its time for a new face. Who is getting promoted?

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 02:41 PM) Well, I'm sure just about any college can tack terms like "literature" or "philosophy" on about any course, those courses at ND require an awful lot of writing and critical thinking. I was a math major and the amount of writing I had to do in all those classes was pure torture. And how does that give you any clarity into what people had to do at other schools. You will probably respond with, I did more then my friends at X school or Y school but again, there are many factors that would go into that response too, maybe you friends got bad grades, maybe they were less likely to exaggerate and thought everything was easy, I don't know. All I know is you are doing a hell of a lot of generalization. Like I said, I tend to believe there are probably less things brushed aside at many other powerhouse football schools then ND, but I don't know that anything you have posted validates that. -
QUOTE (Charlie Haeger's Knuckles @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 01:19 PM) Does anyone believe a system that places so much power to a "corporation" that works me 65 hours a week for a meager salary and shoddy "health insurance" while pocketing all the profits I produce for the "corporation" is fair? MLB and its owners are no different than any other Capitalism-empowered moneygrabbing machine. Do you work in public accounting?

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 01:23 PM) I think I noted in an earlier post. There are schools that hold their athletes to high academic standards, and there are schools that have had a high level of success on the field. There are very few schools that have done both. I can make you a Venn diagram if you need it. What you posted on course load meant nothing. Literally nothing. You did nothing to differentiate that courseload from that of another college campus and as I pointed out, that load, like a lot of early freshman classes, included a good amount of fluff courses. -
Jose Abreu does the ice bucket challenge

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 12:10 PM) I have no issues with the ice bucket challenge, nor do I have an issue with donating to ALS research, but I do want to go off topic for just a moment to plug the fact that over 10 times as many people die from prostate/breast cancer as ALS. The my charity is better then your charity argument is a stupid. If anyone else wants to make similar posts as HH's, they will be removed. Each individual can donate to what causes they feel are right and shocker, they don't have to donate to just 1 cause either. But to tell other people or alude to other people that one is better then another is pure crap (and that is exactly what you did with your post). Don't pretend you know what other peoples experiences are and don't go in and belittle that. You want to raise funds for your cause, go do it and pub that, don't go in and take away from the positive movement the ice bucket challenge has done, which includes significantly increasing the money raised for ALS research (this year vs. last year is up X000% percent). -

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 11:57 AM) General requirements for all students (including athletes): 1 course in University Seminar 1 course in Writing and Rhetoric 2 courses in mathematics 2 courses in science 1 course in history* 1 course in social science* 2 courses in philosophy* 2 courses in theology* 1 course in fine arts* or literature* 2 courses in physical education or ROTC *A University seminar will fulfill one University requirement in one of these disciplines. Now, the only exception that varsity athletes get is that their sport fulfills their physical education requirement for them. However, there are no courses in any of the above fields that are "dumbed down" versions just for athletes. All classes that athletes take are open to all students. Of the general requirements, these have to be completed in the first year: 1 University Seminar 1 Writing and Rhetoric course 2 semesters of mathematics 2 semesters of a science or foreign language 2 courses in physical education or ROTC 1 additional University Requirement Again, no exceptions for athletes other than phys ed. On its own, this post means absolutely nothing cause I have zero idea how that compares to most institutions. Although on that list, I see a few courses of complete and utter fluff in there. Not saying other classes don't have it, but I'm not really very impressed by that list. -

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 11:14 AM) Pretty much everyone agrees that Stanford is far and away the toughest academically for football. So the fact that ND continues to tout itself as "different" in that respect is ludicrous. Yes, it's got higher standards than some s*** school, but so what? Who decides that? ND. That doesn't make ND "special." ND just has a bug up its ass about being different and special from the rest of college sports. Other than having their on TV deal - which by the way puts them way down the list of schools that make $$ from TV - they're a f***ing football program just like the rest of them. They have scandals (more than the average even!), they have academic issues, they have personnel issues, they have off-the-field issues, etc. etc. They are not "special" in any sense of the word. And on top of all of that, ND fans STILL think they're some glorious program despite not having done jack s*** in football for how many decades now? 3 s***-bowl wins since 1995. Scheduling s*** schools like Navy and Purdue must be real tough. Hell, Illinois has 2 bowl wins in the same span and they are a TERRIBLE football program. I love the stadium, I love the old uniform. I love watching some of those awesome night games on real grass. But Christ please WIN something before crowning yourselves as the best program to ever exist. The one thing I'll never get is this ND is a phenomenal institution. While the athletes are held to a higher degree of standard, the school in and of itself, while good, is not the caliber of Stanford or Northwestern, not even close. In fact, in the big ten, there would be numerous schools that as a whole offer a superior education. That said, the alumni base is obviously very strong in the midwest. Notre Dame is much like USC out here, from an education perspective (not comparing anything other then the pure education; get by largely due to significant alumni base vs. necessarily being an extremely difficult school to get into). -

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 10:35 AM) They hired Brian Kelly, of course they aren't any more special than anyone else. It's fine to be like everyone else, just please stop pretending you aren't. What exactly is wrong with Brian Kelly? Is this going to go back to the videographer accident? -
Is that on Friday or Saturday?

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 09:55 AM) By anyone you actually mean me. Apparently anybody else can go there and it's fine. No. Discussion is open, however personal attacks are completely unacceptable. There is a total difference. This site isn't censoring people's opinions, whether pro ND or anti ND. This site is saying that you can argue factually but the moment it gets personal, suspensions and or bannings are being handed out. The reason everything was deleted in the first place is because people couldn't stay on point and instead got into a personal insult fest that are completely intolerable. Personal Note: I'm an ND fan but people can have their own damn opinions too (positive / negative). It doesn't personally effect me or hurt me if a billion people wanted to cheer against ND or anything else. -

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 07:50 AM) I'd say the decision is both easy and hard. Easy in that it is clear that both need to be on different teams because both can be ML shortstops. Hard in that Anderson is probably a little ahead of Rondon in physical and offensive maturity, though not defensively. With only 300 High-A at-bats, do the Sox really think Anderson is ready for AA? His performance in the AFL will probably go a long way in determining how the Sox handle both players. The way I see it, we are talking about a couple weeks of ball...send Anderson to AA or maybe have him continue his rehab in low A and put him in the fall league (or have Rondon go to the AFL). Either way, its definitely a good problem to have.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 07:48 AM) you live in Cali. Make this happen. We are counting on you as owner, operator, and overseeing God of Soxtalk To be honest, I would hate it. It would be a terrible move for the Angels but would get comfortable with it since my favorite team benefited. I don't think in a million years this deal would happen without other parts involved (whether that is money or other players on the Sox side).

Eh. I don't think those are all that substantial, other then teams are going to be impacted by how much they can truly scout guys. At the end of the day, money talks and the top teams can still offer it and aren't scared about the current rules in place for those who beyond the spending limits. -
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 07:45 AM) Of course, if its trash on TV I watch it. It is the ultimate trash. I don't watch much of that stuff but this is one my wife watches that I think I enjoy 100 times more then her.

Does anyone watch Bachelor in Paradise? If not, you should.

QUOTE (SCCWS @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 05:32 AM) Dank's value is very low so even if the Angel's took him, we would get little in return. You basically get the salary dump. That would be amazing but I don't see that happening.
-
By the way...there are many reasons I'd be worried about Rose but him sitting out this game, isn't one of them. I'm much more concerned about some form of a repeat injury.
