Usually they give you a heads up that they are starting the process (as a courtesy) and typically once they start that process, it is a sign that you are either the final candidate or one of the final candidates.

I personally thought if it was anything less then this, you'd probably see the Clippers players (or at least certain players) protest by not playing. In fact, I could have seen other teams in the league join in on the protest if it was something like a slap on the wrist. The NBA acted swift and appropriately.
