  1. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 06:58 PM) Obama calls for spending freeze? FOX news is reporting he is planning to unveil a 3 year budget freeze. I'll believe it when I see it. Since he raised spending by 25% in his first year for most departments, that "spending freeze" is a pimple on an elephant's ass.
  2. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 09:28 AM) Yes you did. And that's BS, too. Blame everyone, everything, the last 8 years, blah blah blah the entire f***ing speech and then the last sentance say "I take responsibility" and that's all the coverage we get. How nice.
  3. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 24, 2010 -> 04:08 PM) So you really believe that this event was planned and organized by a centralized AQ structure, and this isn't just UBL trying to co-opt credit? Every time you get called on something, you have to change the issue by asking another question.
  4. The timing of the "screw you banks, you suck ass" speech was interesting, and it was right at the same time that Bennie was told he was losing support. Hmmm.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 22, 2010 -> 10:16 AM) This could be ugly for the markets. There's no could. It will be ugly.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 09:41 PM) A week after the payout, he can file. Technically, it depends on how the contract was specified. If the money is "damages", then yes. If it's a "severance" for wages, then he couldn't.
  7. Happy birthday, Balta. It's your first birthday as a Dr. Of Love. (stolen from Flaxx for your birthday).
  8. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 10:19 PM) I understand corporate personhood, but when it comes to politics, a corporation is automatically like 1000x more powerful and influential than me unless I become a billionaire. Ironically, right now, a corporate entity has MORE freedom to contribute to campaigns than we do because the law hasn't caught up yet. We still have the $2300 limit. Me specifically, I can't even donate at all because I'm a federal contractor. But now my employer can. How f***ed up is that. Because a corporation is an artificial entity to begin with there need to be some limitations on this... I'd feel a lot better if Congress passed some kind of legislation (they won't). I agree with the sentiment, but I can also see the "other side" as being a "speech" issue. This sets a really, really bad presedence (damn, you know what I'm trying to say).
  9. This is the way the ruling had to go, but it's piss poor. Has a corporation OR a union EVER cast a vote in this country, or do the people of said corporations and unions cast the vote? That's the bottom line to me. I understand why the ruling was what it was, but again, I tend to agree with the point that bmags, Balta, et. al are trying to make here.
  10. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 05:58 PM) from what I understand, you just need to donate millions to the chamber, and the chamber can then put it wherever, without disclosing who the money came from. I think you're right.
  11. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 06:04 PM) They will disappear in SOME numbers. But that's not even what makes it worse - what makes it worse is those people having no money, and become drains on the economy. Well, sure, that's a direct result.
  12. And what is going to make it worse is that unemployment extensions are going to dry up and these people are going to just mysteriously disappear in the %'s and claims numbers.
  13. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 05:29 PM) I don't think I'm being hyperbolic when I ask, how can we really call ourselves a democratic republic anymore? It couldn't be any more obvious that our votes don't matter. That's the way it's been for a long time now. However, instead of backroom doors, it's going to be in the open.
  14. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 05:25 PM) Free speech my ass, the price of free speech just went up by a few million. Then pay me, dammit. That's twice in two days I'm trying to get you to see the benefits of "redistribution of income". Come on, lf.
  15. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 05:26 PM) i've never heard this phrase, kap. Neither have I. I said it backwards... but it's still funny. You got the meaning anyway.
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 05:21 PM) Unemployment claims took a large jump this week, and the 4 week moving average is starting to turn back to increasing job losses. After tomorrow, I don't care, at least I hope not to. Seriously, though, this is exactly what some of us were talking about. The "holiday bump" is gone... even after "seasonality adjustments" there's still seasonality, if that makes sense.
  17. Before it's over, the far right is going to toss his cookies over the bus. Watch.
  18. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 05:11 PM) So, to the Republicans, what do you think about Scott Brown as your 2012 nominee? I've heard a lot of people say that. It's not a hell of a lot different then Barackus the Great, really - altough the "community outreach" on the south side is what made Barackus so Great. Har.
  19. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 04:31 PM) Damn liberal media. That's just stupid media.
  20. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 04:00 PM) I don't think being a realist equals backpedaling. But whatever. I'm just kidding you.
  21. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 02:46 PM) The session is open until January 2011. There's still 11 months to get this passed. This kind of makes sense and its really just a way to make sure that reconciliation happens. What you aren't seeing reported right now is back channel negotiation. Essentially, the Senate is going to agree to make some concessions to the house bill in reconciliation after the fact and the House will vote for the Senate bill as is. That's the plan, as far as I can tell. Setting aside what's become a super toxic debate for a few months to work on something like a jobs package which is what should be his front and center public voice right now is not necessarily a bad thing. I'm not happy about where this is either, but this is not "shutting it down." You've learned to backpeddle quite well, Rex.
  22. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 01:03 PM) I like when you compare apples and oranges. When was the last time a doctor's clinic was bombed or a doctor murdered for providing claritin or cialis? I dunno - there's plenty of bombs out there for cialis, unfortunately.
  23. I don't have a clue what happened to that post. Anyway, What do you call it when you're completely trying really hard to hide an erection? Jon Stewart's real answer: an Obama.
  24. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 09:20 AM) I don't know how many jobs it will save but I think I can put a number on lives. On how many it will kill? Yea. Me too.
  25. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 10:22 PM) A good 99% of me though thinks that of the things the CIA can f*** around with in Iran, manifesting civil protestations and popular upheaval isn't one of them. Coups? Sure...but this is far too democratic for the CIA. I agree with you on this one. /faints
