  1. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Aug 8, 2014 -> 12:49 PM) Cubs acquire Turner for 2 low A pitchers So low A pitcher don't have to clear waivers?
  2. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 10, 2014 -> 09:57 AM) How is it going to be possible to improve the offense and defense at the same time? Since Conor's one of our two or three bright spots this year, can we say his defense has been compensated enough by his offense...and what if he doesn't hit 315 again but he's at 255-275, then his lack of power becomes an issue again. Gillaspie also appears to really be a platoon hitter. Perhaps a really good one, but platoon. That's why I want to try him in the OF; a little difficult to platoon 3B (that and his D is poor) QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 10, 2014 -> 10:07 AM) Batting Leury Garcia leadoff should tell you all you need to know about Ventura. Yep.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 8, 2014 -> 01:01 PM) We'd be giving up Rodon +. Does that interest you? Not in the least.
  4. What's the point of calling up Jordan Danks?
  5. The team is just cracking. They played hard through July, but they couldn't keep it up. Now the studs like Quintana have also lost their mental edge. This happens. Just hope it's a short swoon.
  6. Both the starting staff and the pen were extremely thin to start the year (especially the pen - the mediocre Lindstrom as one of your top 2 pitchers shows that it's a real weakness). What killed the pitching is that the 2 young starters (Johnson and Rienzo) went 360 degrees backwards in terms of player development. What the heck happened to those 2? Otherwise, it was still thin; Paulino was a bust, but he recouped with Noesi. And it's still rebuilding period. But with 2 young pitchers not only taking steps back - but looking like they'll never contribute again - it's a longer rebuilding job than first thought.
  7. QUOTE (BaconOnAStick @ Aug 8, 2014 -> 12:13 AM) Every year you can squeeze out of Abreu, Sale and Quintana on these contracts should be used to compete. There is no reason to gaze longingly to the north side and their indefinite rebuild that is going to stretch the better part of this decade. Go for broke and try and put together a SS contender? Not necessarily. However this division is not getting stronger next year unless this Twins thing happens more rapidly than it should, no reason at all for the Sox to not make some moves to go for it. The problem is that to go for it, they need a #3 and #4 starter, 4 bullpen pitchers, including 2 upper level guys, a 2B, a LF, and DH. So that's 9 players; and if you can swing that, you are still left with zero depth, and infield that is questionable defensively. Sox just have a roster lacking talent.
  8. It's tank time on the southside. And I'm not talking Viciedo.
  9. QUOTE (scs787 @ Aug 7, 2014 -> 09:19 PM) Pablo Ozuna and Timo Perez lead off 36 times for a team that won a title. Yep - Ventura chooses to emulate one of the the worst features of a quality team.
  10. None of those guys are tearing up AAA except for A Garcia and some of the AAAA outfielders. I don't see a major sense of urgency in moving JOhnson/Sanchez/Semien up - they can learn more in AAA.
  11. I wouldn't put Anderson in his own tier, but I think he's a grade ahead of any other positional player we have.
  12. No one could seriously want Rios. This is a "grass is always greener" bunch; or "the lousy player isn't so lousy if he wears a different uniform", but wanting Rios is taking it to the extreme.
  13. This organization is woefully devoid of pitching depth. Nothing in the upper minors; and on the majors, there may be 1/2 a staff (and out of that 1/2, 2 are really good and the rest are no better than average). This can't be cured with a couple of fA signings. this roster needs to be churned...too bad zero got done at the deadline.
  14. Lord we're stuck with him for 2 more years.
  15. When he left here, he really didn't look like he had a whole lot left. His K totals are well below his peak, which suggests much of the stuff is gone. He also had a real bad July.
  16. Interesting list. Wendelkin should be close to the top 25.
  17. I'll take Leury. I thought the Rangers would get something decent for him; but that they couldn't do anything, despite the lack of available RH hitters, just shows that Rios' general uselessness cannot hide.
  18. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Aug 5, 2014 -> 01:41 PM) IF they are DFA'ed the team has ten days to make a roster move, which would include placing a player on waivers to see if they can clear waivers and be re-assigned. However, since he will likely not clear waivers the Marlins can work out a deal with the team that claims him or pull him back. If they pull him back they can place him on waivers again, though they would be irrevocable. Since the non-waiver trade deadline has passed, their options are to place him through waivers or to release him. So how does it work when, say, a team claims a player and then supposedly those the team that waived the player and the team that claimed him "Try to work out a deal" (so that the waiving team just doesn't pull him back). Do they just let the claiming team keep the waived player and they agree in a side deal for the claiming team to send player X after the season? Of does the waived player have to pass through waivers again?
  19. When can we expect the Sox waivers to begin?
  20. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 4, 2014 -> 03:07 PM) When should the Sox get the go ahead to build a good bullpen? When they're ready. And they'll be ready when they have a solid bottom half of the bullpen built internally (we may not be far away from that), some prospects to fill positions if necessary and when the rest of the club is finished. At that point, they can make trades or signings to fill 2/3 bullpen spots. Moving Reed was the right thing to do - it may have been poorly executed, but moving him was smart. We probably couldn't have done better in July....that's when bullpen pitchers seem to have their top value. This bullpen has had a lot of pressure on it all season long; it's tougher without any proven top-end guys. They give up 2 runs and people freak. They finally completely imploded.
  21. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 4, 2014 -> 07:52 AM) I think we can all agree that what really excites fans about a young player is a blend of speed and power. Those guys like Trout and Puig and to a lesser extent Andrew McCutcheon and Carlos Gomez. They are a rare breed smashing HR's, flying all over the outfield and the bases ,making great catches and nailing runners with awesome throws. I see some of those thing in Moises Sierra although he is in his mid 20's rather than his early 20's. He's fast, makes some outstanding catches and has a great arm .He's had some decent years in the minors nothing that would leap out at you to suggest he's a budding superstar. Has potential to hit for power being 6"1" 220 . He's worth keeping around. It could happen. It probably won't, but it has happened.
  22. To answer the question - yes, but that's part of rebuilding. Bullpen should be the last place to fix. I think Guerra's useful as well; as are webb and probably Surkamp against lefties. But they are all back end guys. Just lack front end guys.
  23. QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 3, 2014 -> 06:38 PM) Cleto's last 5 appearances: 7.2 innings 2 hits 1 bb 13 k I'm glad we kept him around. He's got "stuff" that's for sure. Guerra's been fine most of the time. The pen lacks 2 high end arms - it currently has none of these. Too much pressure has been put on the other guys. Also, only 1 lefty is a problem.
  24. This bullpen is the result of a ridiculously weak farm. And there's nothing to bring in.
  25. The loony notion that this sox team somehow is a contender should finally be put out to pasture. They've now lost home series to the Twins, Padres and Diamondbacks plus assorted other clear indications that this team is way short. I just wish it would have happened a week ago; perhaps the Sox might have been willing to do what needed to be done to bring some young talent in here (like selling high on Ramirez).
