  1. The JP Howell fawning has begun. Does it matter that his K/9 sucks? Nope. Does it matter that his K/BB ratio is atrocious? Nope. Does it matter that his ERA is awful? Nope. Hawk and DJ think that he can pound the zone with spectacular pitches, and dog gone'it, they're right!
  2. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Sep 14, 2005 -> 10:19 PM) I don't think anyone can question a move regarding Bears db's. Having seen what they were able/are able to accomplish with the eclectic group of db's they have, I refuse to question any decision regarding those positions. I mean, there really isn't a stand-out, impact player in the bunch. I suppose arguments can be made for Tillman and Azumah--and in time, Vasher--but, we don't have what a lot of scouts would call lock-down db's. We just have a bunch of gutsy players that make it work. I'm actually looking forward to see how this plays out. I've never been a huge fan of Azumah, the corner. Nickel-back, okay, fine, you can hide him a little more, but certainly not a #1 or #2 in my mind. What'd'you think of "Zoom"?
  3. Does Todd Johnson play behind Mike Brown? I've liked Todd Johnson since they drafted him, I was sort of hoping that he'd be named the starter...
  4. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Sep 14, 2005 -> 09:51 PM) opinion Nate Vasher was the one with the PI call...?
  5. QUOTE(qwerty @ Sep 14, 2005 -> 08:46 PM) I really hate flip floppers. In spring training mccarthy was a god and should have made the 25 man roster. Then when we put the pansy on the dl and mccarthy did just decent against the cubs he was suppose to take over hernandez's spot in the rotation. He gets smoked in three of his next four starts and he is the anti-christ and was an overated prospect. Two fantastic starts and another good outing in his ''relief'' role against the angels and he is god again. :headshake Funny how all those people talking about how overrated McCarthy was are pretty much the same ones now calling for McCarthy to start over El Duque. Of course, I agree that McCarthy should start, but I thought this was a good post (qwerty's).
  6. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Sep 14, 2005 -> 05:34 AM) I hated both years, especially the 2nd one. I disagree, just because I think grabbing El Duque for $4 million (or so) for two years was better then giving a guy like Eric Milton/Russ Ortiz/Derek Lowe big money. He did what was needed, be a fifth starter, give us a chance to win. But, like I said in another thread, his time has passed. McCarthy got his s*** figured out, and is the better pitcher, so enough with hanging on to the 'proven veteran', time to give the ball to the better pitcher.
  7. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Sep 14, 2005 -> 05:30 AM) Anyone remember what the incentive clauses were in El Duque's contract... He has a possibility to be up to $8M next year. Ozzie's refusal to sit him could cost the Sox both games in the short term; plus money and hinder trade partners in the long term. Ugly situation. I hated that second year of the deal. Okay with the first year, hated the second year.
  8. QUOTE(qwerty @ Sep 14, 2005 -> 05:22 AM) Any doubts that he signs a three year deal this off-season? The Sox better not f*** up the cheapness of Brandon McCarthy for the next three-four years. They need to have a cheap, effective pitcher in their rotation -- they simply can't have $35 million+ invested into their starting staff.
  9. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Sep 14, 2005 -> 05:20 AM) Plus I actually liked the rain delay. Meant I was able to finish all my homework and study longer for my test that I got in the morning. Well that and I actually get to watch a game late at night (10:20 out here) which is a nice change of pace. Ah, I'm the total opposite. AP Euro test in three days, essay due Thursday, 25 pages of full top of the page to bottom of the page text to read, yet I don't do it. Gotta stop procrastinating...
  10. Over/under -- Carl Everett's OBP -- .300. Before this game, it stood at .308. It has to be like .305 right now.
  11. Yeah, I have to say that this gamethread = the best. Lots of fun tonight, hopefully they can cap it off with a WSW.
  12. Can we just stick with Bobby Jenks, rather then going to The Closer ™ just 'cause it's a save situation?
  13. QUOTE(qwerty @ Sep 14, 2005 -> 05:08 AM) They have nearly 70 million invested in 16 players next year i have just read. That seems kinda high to me but i have not checked to see if it was accurate or not. Either way, i would rather up grade at mutiple positions than just one... especially considering the guy we would be paying twelve millio has only had one great year and one solid one. Can someone actually look this up? How does that make any sense? We're at what, $75-$78 million right now? We lose $8 million from Konerko, and another $8 million (or so) from Thomas. I realize that raises will probably bring that number up a bit, but to $70 million? You know what? Nevermind. That actually does make sense. Garland + Pierzynski get arbitration raises, I think Uribe's and Rowand's contract calls for increases after every year, and same goes for the guys we signed this offseason, El Duque, Iguchi, Dye, and Hermanson...
  14. QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 14, 2005 -> 05:06 AM) I missed it....so Jenks threw a good hook to Vlad? Best curveball of the year, by any White Sox pitcher.
  15. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Sep 14, 2005 -> 05:03 AM) Plus Hermy's contract is a great value. I tend to think Hermanson's season this year was a helluva lot of luck. But maybe that's just me.
  16. QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 14, 2005 -> 05:01 AM) Hermanson might need back surgery, so I doubt his value will be high. I'd rather keep him, and let him be a versatile reliever. As I'm sure you know, myself and others have been saying Marte was going to get traded over the offseason. Obviously, that's almost a given now. I wouldn't be shocked to see a trade of Contreras and Marte for Overbay. Teams can make an absolute killing off of dealing 'closers' in the off-season. Deal him for a regular reliever who had a decent season, yet not big in the 'flashy' relievers stats like saves. Get a prospect, too.
  17. QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 14, 2005 -> 04:54 AM) Yeah, I have no problem with Iguchi coming back next season. However, I wouldn't rule out trading him in the right deal. The only four players I'd never consider trading for next year are Buehrle, Jenks, Cotts, and McCarthy. One person I'd trade while his value is high... Hermanson. And Marte, too. But I'd have to think with this suspension/DL thing it's dropping a bit.
  18. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Sep 14, 2005 -> 04:52 AM) At the cell he would post a 1.000 plus OPS. Beltre is a way better player than most people here give him credit for. Last season was not a fluke for him. Well, he fits in with the whole latin familia thing, and at least he gives you some stability at the position. My faith in Fields panning out, obviously, isn't too high. Get me Beltre, and if Konerko isn't resigned, Overbay. Giving up the prospects will be a drag, but you're getting two next year from the arbitration picks from PK. Move McCarthy into the rotation, El Duque as our Glendon Rusch long reliever/spot starter type. Grab a couple of NRI's, and let's head to Tuscon.
  19. QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 14, 2005 -> 04:49 AM) I would look into seeing if the Mariners want to add to their Japanese product by trading Iguchi in a possible deal. It's a lot easier to find a solid 2b than it is a powerful 3b in this market. I'm actually Okay with Iguchi here next year. I would have loved for the Sox to have Placido Polanco right now, as well as the contract he just signed (something like four years, $16 million, IIRC), but that's long gone. Most of this hinges around what happens with Konerko, really. And Thomas. I'm a fan of the whole incentive laden contract for Thomas. He can still rake when healthy. Wow -- Columbo cut. Angelo really missed on most of the first round picks minus Tommie Harris.
  20. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Sep 14, 2005 -> 04:46 AM) It will be a 3B.... Uribe is.. 1) Healthy 2) Hispanic 3) Coachable (at least compared to Crede) Crede has offseason back surgery in his future. Drops his back shoulder more than any player in baseball, yet refuses to correct it. And is a Scott Boras client. If I had any faith that he could turn in around... and that we could get Seattle to take on some money... Adrian Beltre.
  21. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Sep 14, 2005 -> 04:43 AM) this is like he was for the latter half of last season. If he can get going, the Sox could have a legit 3 hole hitter. *Dreams* I may be in the minority here, but I hope that Uribe and Rowand are still up the middle next year. I can't see anyone coming in and being a defensive improvement over either of the two.
  22. AJ has like one hit in his last 25 ABs. That really isn't good. Not good at all. ......
