  1. QUOTE(SoxFan562004 @ Jul 30, 2005 -> 01:29 AM) The only numbers that mean anything to me about Wagner this year is 98-99, which he's still lighting up the gun with. Ick. I hate deadline deals for relief pitchers. They could really come back to bite you in the rear-end, especially if you're giving up a future position player/starting pitcher. Marte and McCarthy for Wagner? Sheesh... that's a tough call.
  2. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 30, 2005 -> 01:25 AM) Is was a joke. Sorry, your sarcasm was hard to detect.
  3. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 30, 2005 -> 01:21 AM) Duque's throwing a lot of pitches again. Can this guy ever throw a complete game? I think it's impossible by the laws of physics. So what? He's our fifth starter. I'll take six innings, three runs from him every night out...
  4. Lowell is still in the Fla/Wash game. It's the sixth inning. If he gets removed from the game, I think a deal's done (duh).
  5. QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Jul 30, 2005 -> 01:02 AM) Yeah.... 9-Year worth 116.5M- he will make between 2000 and 2008 a salary of 12.5M each year- + in 2000, 5.5M of salary deferred till 2009- + deal includes 2009 Team Option or a 4M buyout- + 6.5M of 2001-2009 salaries deferred to subsequent years between 2009 and 2024 HE GONE!!!! Thanks. I'm starting to get on board a little bit with getting Griffey. Let him DH for most of the year, then next year, move him to RF, with Dye to first. So long as Cincy eats a good portion of the contract. Of course, they could also just go and get Adam Dunn. One of the two would make me happy. I really, up until a few days ago, didn't realize just how good a season he was having -- .902 OPS? Damn...
  6. That's one helluva basehit by Tejada. That ball was below the knees and on the black of the outside corner. He might just be the best overall player in baseball. Overall... Shortstops who can field like him, and hit with such power -- those are hard to come by. WHarris -- do you, by chance, have Ken Griffey's contract breakdown?
  7. QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Jul 30, 2005 -> 12:52 AM) Sanchez, Shoppach, Milledge and Petit? I'f I'm Chuck Lamar I can't say yes fast enough. Good deal for the Mets too getting a good arm in the pen and one of the best hitters in the game. I just don't think Huff moving to first and Cameron playing left (center next year) is enough for Boston although the contract dump probably would please management. Shoppach is a good young catcher, from what I hear. Showing some good power. Milledge, I haven't heard much about, other than Met fans liking him as one of their best position players in the system. And Petit -- real nice arm. Hell yeah you're right, that's one helluva package. Sanchez is a.... pitcher from Boston (taking a guess?)? Oh, and in a recent ESPN.com chat with Buster Olney, he said something to the effect of: "While Oakland has had a nice streak recently, believe it or not, they did not invent the OBP stat." I just laughed.
  8. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 29, 2005 -> 07:58 PM) I think we all agree that we can't rely on Carl to be the dh, correct?? I just think we differ in opinion on how good Frank was. He started off fine imo but just kept getting worse and worse. To many k's in big situations when we needed to get a runner in from 3rd with less then 2 outs. Frank just wasn't that good imo no matter what his ops was. Well... in 7 ABs with a man on third (less than 2 outs), Thomas had .429 AVG, a .364 OBP, and a 1.650 OPS. With 11 RBI's. So... I don't know if this page is wrong, or if we're just remembering the times he failed, or what... In 25 ABs with RISP, he had a .240/.353/.560 line. This is the page I'm looking at, BTW. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/spli...tting&year=2005 You're going to be extremely hard pressed to convince me that a guy with a .905 OPS 'isn't very good'...
  9. QUOTE(bigred3535 @ Jul 29, 2005 -> 07:51 PM) Look, the fact is Frank at his worst this year, was better than Carl's average play this year. If Carl were tp play like he did 5 years ago, he'd be a good DH. However a .250 average and .750 OPS are pathetic from one of the "strong" bats in the lineup. Carl can't take pitches and he's not a "clutch" player, so the Sox need a better DH. I agree. I also believe that the Sox scored about a run-per-game more with Frank in the lineup. Not to mention extending the lead to ten (plus) games.
  10. QUOTE(bigred3535 @ Jul 29, 2005 -> 07:41 PM) In the games he played, Frank was the most valuable bat on the team, period. Take a look at MLVr, which is a Baseball Prospectus stat that means, basically, the number of runs contributed above what the league average player would contribute, per game: Derrek Lee (for comparison, as the league leader in the category): .682 runs per game Frank Thomas (White Sox team leader): .119 runs per game Jermaine Dye: .093 Paul Konerko: .089 Carl Everett: -.034 That means that, per game, Everett was worse than the league average player, while Frank was much better. Thanks for posting that. A move needs to be made. A .307 OBP out of the three hole isn't acceptable, and while Frank's OBP wasn't that great either, he was hitting for a ton of power. I'm not sure Aubrey Huff is the answer, either. His OPS is on par with Crede's. Adam Dunn? Ken Griffey? I'd be very open to getting Griffey, if Cincy ate a whole lot of the contract. EDIT: And, I see I'm not the only one taking advantage of BP's free-ness till August 3rd...
  11. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 29, 2005 -> 07:27 PM) The Sox most likely were going to announce this anyway, I don't think blaming Bruce Levine is exactly fair. Plus, I don't really think the price went up, we still have Everett who has actually been more productive than Frank this season. Sorry, but a .759 out of the three spot doesn't thrill me...
  12. QUOTE(bigred3535 @ Jul 29, 2005 -> 06:40 PM) Assuming his home run pace went down somewhat, and his batting average went up somewhat, as was likely to happen, that keeps his OPS in the mid .900 range, or 100 points better than Pauly and 200 points better than Everett. Also, according to Baseball Prospectus Frank was the most valuable White Sox hitter on a per game basis this season, even with his sagging batting average (which is an overrated stat, to be sure). Agree 100%. Also agree with your thoughts on Dunn. Everyone focuses on the K's. No one focuses on his ability to get on base at a .380 clip, or his ability to hit for awesome power.
  13. New stuff from Will Carroll over at Baseball Prospectus (free everything for about a week! Really neat stuff): Link.

  15. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 28, 2005 -> 06:43 PM) Actually if you listened to Ozzie, Kenny, and company during times like Soxfest, they never said they were going to reduce the HRs or the amount of runs that they scored because of them. What they said was that they wanted to balance out their offense and make sure that they were scoring runs on a more regular basis, so that they weren't scoring 15 runs one day, and 2 in each of the next 3 games. I know that others have crunched the numbers, and largely the Sox have been very successful at this as their variances between how many runs they scoring games is way down, as is their standard deviations. You can pretty much bet the Sox will score 3, 4, or 5 runs every day, within a reasonable standard deviation. Standard deviations basically means scoring one run one night, and seven the next night? And, while it averages out to four, you have a better shot of winning both games by scoring four one night and four the next?
  16. Penn State just kicked my ass, something like 24-6. My best plays came on long bombs, other than that, they had me under total control. I was pissed, to say the least.
  17. QUOTE(palesox38 @ Jul 29, 2005 -> 04:19 AM) It's no problem, I actually didn't hear the interview. Mike O'Gulnick was talking about it during a Mac, Jurko, and Harry update. What exactly was the rumor? ......... :banghead :banghead
  18. Everybody's favorite Japanese pitcher getting talked about... http://baseballprospectus.com/chat/chat.php?chatId=131
  19. Speaking of Scott Williamson, I really wish the Sox picked him up in the offseason. Ah, well...
  20. I'm just thinking... when is Vizcaino going to get the boot? 'Cause he brings absolutely nothing to this team, except, well, getting hit hard. He's got a WHIP of 1.56. Opponents are hitting .361 against him... (gag) He can't even bail himself out by striking out guys -- 5.11 per nine. Worst of all, he's a one pitch pitcher. His fastball is straight as an arrow, so he doesn't throw it. Instead, he throws his slider every single time. And eventually, he hangs one, and it gets hit -- hard. Truth be told, there's four guys at Charlotte who I'd rather have over him.
  21. Hurray! Goodenow stepped down as NHLPA president!
  22. I'm regretting leaving my NCAA at a friend's house tonight... :banghead For the first time in about a week, I got the basement to myself, and what'd'ya know? No NCAA... Damnit, Tom...
  23. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jul 27, 2005 -> 11:04 PM) Is the draft going to be combined this years and last years entrees? Is it going to be extra long? ??? There was a draft last year. The 'Hawks took Cam Barker third -- Ovechkin went first.
