White Sox vs Cubs Game One Thread 5-20-05
CWSGuy406 replied to sox-r-us's topic in 2005 Season in Review
QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 20, 2005 -> 03:49 AM) Pulled these stats from a Flubs board... Noteworthy Matchups (Chicago White Sox) vs. Greg Maddux (righty): Timo Perez: 8 for 19 with 2 HR (.421) A.J. Pierzynski: 3 for 6 (.500) Aaron Rowand: 4 for 6 (.667) Willie Harris: 2 for 6 (.333) Paul Konerko: 2 for 4 Jermaine Dye: 1 for 3 The current White Sox are hitting .254 (35 for 138) vs. Maddux. Noteworthy Matchups (Chicago Cubs) vs. Freddy Garcia (righty): Ben Grieve: 6 for 27 with 1 HR (.222) Todd Hollandsworth: 4 for 11 (.364) The current Cubs are hitting .194 (21 for 108) vs. Garcia. Anyone have the feeling Timo will be starting in RF tomorrow? :puke The thing is, where would he start? Certainly not for Rowand or Pods, and, I doubt he's going to bench Dye after his best overall game as a White Sock. Hopefully we can get through this weekend without Timo... EDIT: And looking at it, you did say RF -- but, I still don't think he'd bench Dye after such a nice game. At least, I don't think he would... -
Just finished my first season: I won 105 games. Mark Buehrle got the Cy Young, going 24-5 with 189 K's. Frank Thomas had a late season surge and finished with 42 homers and 108 RBI's. Ross Gload was my second best position player. And, I finished in positive digits in owner mode, purchased an outfield upgrade restaurant, as well as a seating upgrade. I play Baltimore in round one. Boston plays Oakland (who were down ten games in August, yet came back to beat out the Mariners). In the NL, the Cubs face the Mets, and the Doddddgers face the Cards. Hopefully I can win some games to get some money for my franchise.

Thanks for the updates, Jim, I really appreciate 'em...

QUOTE(JimH @ May 19, 2005 -> 11:29 PM) OK, took a short dinner break. Frank Thomas is up now, quickly down 0-2. Charlotte is losing 5-2, Person hit a guy and walked a couple more, he has walked 6. Thomas grounds hard to 3rd, nice play by the 3B. Thomas now 1-3. Two outs in the 6th, Brian Anderson up. He's hitting the ball hard, and he's working the count. Those are the two things that are most important right now for Frank -- IMO.

QUOTE(The Critic @ May 19, 2005 -> 03:52 PM) ESPN is also considering backing out of their contract with the NHL. No TV = NHL even less relevant than now, and THAT's hard to do. Replacement players = junk. While I'm still a little sad when I see that it's mid-May and then I think about how great the playoffs would be right now, I have to say that I adjusted pretty well to not having the NHL around this year. I'm a HUGE hockey fan, but like anything else, if it's not around you learn to live without it. NBA fans may learn this lesson next season. Yep. And if the NBPA (or whatever) and the owners don't come to an agreement for the NBA, the NHL would have a nice shot to regain some of their audience...

Anyone recall, off-hand, the name of the town in which the last battle takes place in? I'm doing a project for my AP History class, and would appreciate if anyone could recall the town... BTW, for those who saw the movie several times, is this a good enough summary? Or should I include more key points? The movie starts in a flashback where Private Ryan, now an old man, is bringing his family to the WW2 memorial cemetary. The movie then flashes back to the invasion at Normandy, known as D-Day. The battle is very bloody and gruesome, but the Allies are able to push the Germans from the beach. The Allies are commanded by Captain Miller, the man who will later take the task of finding Private Ryan. Once the battle is over, they find that a family of four brothers have endured very tough losses; three out of the four brothers, and, after informing the mother of her dead sons, Miller takes on the task of finding the surving Ryan. Miller chooses the men who he needs for this task, including a German translater, Upam, as well as several others. This small force of men sets out through French towns, encountering many of the enemy Nazis. The task starts to become painful as eventually, some of the members of Miller's unit start to question whether or not it's worth their lives to save just one man, yet Miller does a good job at keeping the men together. They finally arrive at this French town, where Miller finds Private James Ryan. Miller tells Ryan that his other brothers have died, and Ryan breaks down and cries. Miller then tells Ryan that he'll take him home, yet Ryan refuses as they are about to battle the Germans. So, all of Miller's men help defend the town (as well as the bridge) against the Germans, using tactics such as 'sticky bombs' and the unconventional methods of throwing the bazooka rounds (not shooting them) to hold back the Germans. The Germans do, however, break through and grab the town, and force the Allies to move back behind the bridge. As the Americans are about to break up the bridge (Miller is shot during this, too), a fleet of Allied planes comes and bombs the Germans, forcing them to retreat and for that particular unit to surrender. And, I appreciate anyone who actually reads what I just posted. I gotta know that town, though...

So, qwerty, it's basically a stat that factors in things like pressure (coming in with runners on base, inning, score differential, etc), and how well the reliever did based on the situation?

QUOTE(sox-r-us @ May 19, 2005 -> 05:00 PM) Things to consider: Kenny will make some trades. He does it every year. And his track record states he does it well before the deadline. Kenny is always after winning the world series. We may be the best team in the majors, but clearly when we play solid teams, we are NOT far and away the better team (see 4-3 record vs Os and Rangers last two series). The exception is the 4-1 record vs Minny. We will soon get more data on this front when we play Yanks, Bo Sox etc. Hence, expect some changes to this team (see above point too). Now, I hope in hell, we do not get Chavez and his salary here. We can spend $10M/year on far better options. We could make two upgrades with that kind of money than get Chavez here. I would do what I have always said. Trade for Vinny Castilla, and let Crede be a pinch hitter/bench for the playoffs. In the offseason look to trade Crede. By the time Vinny is done, Josh Fields will be ready. And we will spend 1/4 the $ to make this change. (Assuming Nats take some of Vinny's contract which is not that ig to begin with) With the $ saved, sign a solid 1B and let Paulie go. And get Frank a new contract for the next 2/3 years so that he retires a White Sox. If I'm gonna spend ten million on one player, Chavez is close to the player that I'd want to spend it on. He's a vacuum over at third-base, entering his prime, the past two years has had OPS+ of 132 and 132. And, Castilla is average at best at this point in his career, but that's been done...

I'm worrying about Fields and Young. I know it's early, but I'd really like to see both of them control the strikezone a little better (read: strike out less). But, I'm liking what I'm seeing from Owens/Sweeney/Rogo/Jenks. Keep up the good work at Birmy, fellas! And Tom (that is your name, correct?), keep up the great work with the reports. Awesome job, it looks like you get to see one helluva team (prospect-wise) in Birmingham this season. Keep it up! Everyone appreciates it...

I'm not a huge music fan, but check out the new Dave CD. Some real awesome songs on there (and my friend Tom who posts here can tell ya the same). "Hello Again" is awesome, "Out of My Hands", and "Louisiana Bayou" are probably my three favorites. And, like I said, I'm really not a huge music fan, but the new Dave CD rocks...

Maybe we can grab Ryan Howard off their hands...

He can pitch, and anyone saying "he can't pitch" based on those ten innings last year on that small stint in the majors last year alone should give him a second chance. He's obviously got the stuff to be good, he's just gotta let the nerves go when he gets up here. I assume it was pretty anxious, wasn't that his first time in the majors?

Thanks for the news, kapko, albeit very depressing news. No hockey this past couple of months was a real bummer. Basketball is fine and dandy, but it doesn't touch hockey's playoffs, hell, even regular season (and I'm sure a lot of people disagree, that's fine). It would be awful if the "Lebron James" of hockey isn't gonna get the chance to play. Hell, even Alex Ovechkin. When the NHL does get going -- whenever that is -- they better market the hell out of Crosby and Ovechkin, 'cause there gonna need to in order to rebuild America's fanbase...

Link If you don't want to click on the link, the jist of it is that it would be a lottery system based upon the last three years of hockey. If your respective team didn't make the playoffs in any of those years, your team would get three balls. If your team made the playoffs one of the years, your team would get two balls -- and the rest of the teams would get one ball each. I hate that idea. It's bulls*** that a team like the Hawks, who haven't had a good team since the mid-to-early 90's, only have a two percent shot more at getting Crosby than a team like Detroit or Colorado. I swear, if he ends up with a team like Detroit, I'd puke my lungs out. I haven't come up with a real good idea for it, but this certainly shouldn't be used -- IMHO, at least. (Now, excuse me for a quick moment while I dream of Ruutu and Crosby on the same team... )

Just got home from school. I saw that Dye doubled in two, and AJ homered in two, but how did we score our third, fourth, and fifth runs? And, I assume Buehrle went seven strong? -
QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 18, 2005 -> 05:43 AM) Hardest working at what -- putting the leadoff man on base? Yeah, that's it... :rolly I'm pretty sure you know what I mean.

QUOTE(Jordan4life_2004 @ May 18, 2005 -> 06:36 AM) Is it me, or does are farm system kinda rock? I haven't been this excited about so many guys from our system in a LONG time. It's certainly a helluva lot better than it was a few years back... And, Birmy seems like such a kick-ass team -- Tracy, Owens, Sweeney, Young, Fields, Rogo, Jenks, Reynoso, etc etc.
-
QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 17, 2005 -> 05:15 AM) Yeah, and when Cotts sucks again by putting the first batter he faces on base via a walk, hit, or HBP, I bet you won't be saying a word. No, see, that's the thing -- I'll be there when he sucks, I'll be there when he's good. Unlike you -- case in point, the Oakland series -- where Ozuna makes an error, and surprise surprise, you're nowhere to be found, yet Harris makes an error/strikes out, and it's a ripfest. It's easy to back a guy when things are going good... And, I don't think I'll be making a thread entitled "Cotts' Hustle" even though he's one of the hardest working pitchers on the staff... According to Rooney/Farmer/Hawk.

Jon eff'ing Garland... I think digging up the "Jon Garland for a bag of balls" threads would provide lots of laughs tonight. Go get 'em tomorrow, Buehrle!

QUOTE(YahtzeeSox @ May 17, 2005 -> 11:07 PM) Wow, have some class dude. Even if he is underperforming, that does not give you an excuse to make fun of how he looks. Care to post a picture of yourself, so we may all make fun of you? :finger I agree. At this point, we all realize he isn't performing too well, you don't have to post it day after day after day after day. And, the whole "DURR" thing, you're just trying to making him look like a dumbass, which is pretty low -- to me, and I guess Yahtzee too. There's no need for it, really, considering he's not a guy who's just taken the signing bonus and gotten fat and ran with it. By all accounts he's a hard worker, one of the hardest on the team, and there's really no need for comments like that.

Sox vs Rangers 5/17 - Game Thread
CWSGuy406 replied to southsideirish71's topic in 2005 Season in Review
I think we need to have a thread called "Rowand's Hustle" for that neat little slide he had... -
QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 17, 2005 -> 09:24 PM) In Castilla's last non-Coors season, he hit .277 for the Braves in 2003. Crede hit .261 in 2003 and only .239 last season. I guess that's not really big difference though. He was average. Crede was worse than average. But OPS+ is an obscure statistic, so nevermind.
-
QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 17, 2005 -> 09:08 PM) One question -- do you think Crede could ever hit .319 AVG / .362 OBP / .589 SLG with 46 HR's and 144 RBI's playing in Coors Field? If you say yes, you are a liar. No... I don't recall implying that Crede would hit .300+ either... But, you can't rewind to six years ago, we're talking about a 37 or 36 year old Vinny Castilla. The last four years his OPS+ has been 94, 61 ( :headshake ), 101, and 104 -- so, he's been about average, or worse. All this, might I add, while making somewhere around $17 million bucks. So, four million (plus change) for a guy who's about league average (at this point in his career, and I don't see how you can refute that), or less than a million for a guy who will give you solid defense, worse-than-league-average offense (though he is entering his prime years). Add in the fact that you'd have to give something to get Castilla, and I'll take Crede...
