  1. Brian, how is it down at UofI at this time? Pretty nuts and anxious I'd imagine, huh?
  2. QUOTE(Butter Parque @ Mar 19, 2005 -> 02:42 AM) SS2K5, your intelligence is overwhelming me!! LOL! Two words -- Eric Milton.
  3. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Mar 19, 2005 -> 01:39 AM) I, too, feel this is a good signing. Angelo isn't going out and signing the Orlando Pace(s) and the Walter Jones(s), but he is quietly bolstering that sad excuse for an O-Line with guys like Miller and Garza. Look at the Patriots O-Line. There isn't a guy anywhere near the first round. They simply have a bunch of horses that have learned the system. It works. I'm a big advocate of a piece-work O-Line of veterans and such. That said, I do like Adam Terry, the 6'8, 314 pounder from Syracuse. But, I don't think the Bears were looking to go that direction in the second round anywho. Mr. Tucker, your plane is boarding. Wouldn't you say that chemistry is a big key to any good offensive line? I don't like to use it, but if you (the O-Lineman) know the guys around you, you'll be more comfortable with them, and know their tendencies as far as picking up certain blitzes, etc. Hell, I still remember our 2001 O-Line -- Brockemeyer (spelled it wrong, but it's something along those terms), Tucker, Kreutz, Villareal, Big Cat -- that group seemed like such a great unit, I think they played all 16 games together. It all starts with the O-Line, let's hope Jones has lots and lots of room to run this season.
  4. QUOTE(Melissa1334 @ Mar 19, 2005 -> 12:02 AM) i said American league. 1)hafner doesnt count hes a dh 2)DLee is in the NL- plus PK was better than lee last yr. 3) delgado NL 4)Mornea you said, will be better. but he isnt yet. Point remains the same -- Konerko doesn't deserve anything about eight million -- IMHO. He has a career 111 OPS+ -- above average, but not a guy I want making 8-12 million per year -- which is what Konerko will be asking for. And he'll probably get it, too. I just think the money can be spent better elsewhere (like qwerty's guy comin' over from Japan -- the 24 year old who throws the gyro-ball, don't want to attempt the name spelling).
  5. QUOTE(Melissa1334 @ Mar 18, 2005 -> 11:19 PM) how many 1st baseman in the al are better than PK? we all know he got ripped off last yr with the all star game.. Travis Hafner (though he DH's). Sexson is about where Konerko is at. Delgado, though not in the AL, is better than Konerko. David Ortiz -- a 1B/DH type, though certainly a lot more DH -- is better than PK. Teixera will be better, as will Maurneau (sp?). Derrek Lee is right around where Konerko is at, plus better defensively. These are off the top of my head (a mix of both AL and NL)... It's all about bang for your buck. Konerko is nowhere near worth $10 million, and if he asks for that, you move on and wish him well in his future. Gload + RH platoon guy @ 1 Million >>>> Konerko @ $10 Million.
  6. And DJ rags Walker for not 'getting dirty' on that play. :rolly I assume this will be El Duque's last inning, correct?
  7. QUOTE(KevHead0881 @ Mar 18, 2005 -> 09:36 PM) I'm a big Kenny supporter too, but lets at least win a couple division before we start that kind of talk. Exactly. Hell -- I know this would probably be unpopular around here, but if the Sox don't make the playoffs this season, I don't see the reason why he should be brought back, but that's another thread for another day...
  8. Ugh, give it up, Hawk. I like the guy a lot, but Kenny is no where near the best GM in the AL -- not even close...
  9. QUOTE(HSC's Biggest Fan @ Mar 18, 2005 -> 07:59 PM) The guy has played in 57 games and is 33 years old, do you risk him being the starter. I don't think he is all that good defensivly on top of it. Throw potential out the window. I want a guy that has almost 500 games experience and is 28 over a guy that has been in 57 games and is 33. Ah -- I misunderstood you. Correct -- Burke isn't a good starter, but neither is Davis -- and you value Davis' experience more than I do. I personally trust Pierzynski's durability, and I don't think he'll be out for a long enough time to warrant grabbing another starting catcher. I just think as backups, Burke >>> Davis. My bad, I thought you were talking about as a backup.
  10. QUOTE(HSC's Biggest Fan @ Mar 18, 2005 -> 03:29 PM) Come on, I like Jaime Burke and he does some nice things. He is a third catcher and good option if someone gets hurt, as is Chris Widger. Davis is 5 years younger and has appeared in over 400 more games. Sure Burke fits the OBP mode, mind you he has yet to hit a mjor league home run, but I think you are risking a-lot by getting rid of Davis. There is a reason Burke is 33 and had no relative ML experience before last season. This is also the reason he is willing to do whatever it takes to make the big league club. His defense is nowhere near good enough to keep him around for an other position then catcher. They tried this with Gload in the outfield, athleticism can make up for shortcomings on defense and neither Burke or Gload have this. I think moving Davis would really hurt this team. What has Davis ever done -- besides being a first round pick -- that makes you think he'll amount to anything more than a backup? Beck said it well -- he can't hit lefties, and we already have a starting catcher who hits righties well. Against tough lefties, I'd much rather throw Burke out behind the plate than Davis...
  11. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Mar 18, 2005 -> 05:05 AM) Remember, all it takes for a team to be interested in a guy is a hot spring, which Davis is currently having. Good GM's won't give a damn about how well a guy is doing in Spring Training. There's no correlation between ST performance and ML performance. Guys get hot, others are cold -- doesn't mean one is better/worse than the other.
  12. I'm with Mario -- Konerko isn't worth upwards of ten million per year. And I don't buy the whole, "he's the face of the team" junk. Aaron Rowand could be that guy, and put up damn good numbers doing it. I said it last year with Ordonez, and I'll say it with Konerko -- neither are the top players at their respective positions, thus, they don't deserve a mammoth contract.
  13. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Mar 18, 2005 -> 06:29 AM) It's spelled Mackowiak. Also, the Pirates are expected to start the season with Wiggington at 3B, Jason Bay in LF, Tike Redman in CF, and Matt Lawton in RF. Mackowiak will be their super-sub off the bench. I don't think Willie is a stud by any means but he is more talented than an overpaid stiff like Juan Encarnacion. The fact that the Pirates would even consider Encarnacion just proves my point about Littlefield's questionable moves. Also, Adkins is looking great in camp and could be a decent 5th starter. If he had no trade value why are there scouts at camp looking at him? I honestly think Willie and Adkins would be more than enough for Mackowiak. This isn't a spelling bee -- or B -- so who cares. It's about knowledge, and DBAHO is one of the most knowledgable posters on here. And, giving up Harris and Adkins/Diaz isn't worth Mack.
  14. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Mar 18, 2005 -> 03:58 AM) All signs point to Burke over Davis, but since Davis makes the $1m paycheck, he's going to stick around. He also had the highest ERA of all 4 catchers last season as well. Well, I'd hope that what Kenny said about Harris/Iguchi as far as playing time and not worrying about which one makes more money applies to the catching situation as well...
  15. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Mar 18, 2005 -> 03:47 AM) My thoughts exactly. If Davis is going to produce offensively it'll be here, but whether or not he gets the chance to do that, I don't think he will. At this point, I really don't see the use for Davis on the team. Maybe someone can tell me if I'm wrong, but the reasons teams would want Davis is because he might be able to figure it out vs. righties, as he's done better against righties than against lefties -- and he's alright defensively, but not a defensive star. I'd much rather have Burke up here. He seems like the perfect 'Ozzieball' type of player, with that short, compact swing (whether or not that produces a high batting average is besides the point), plus -- I'm almost certain that he would do better against left handed pitchers than Davis would. I also recall the pitchers really taking a liking to Burke, though that's not to say the same about Davis. And, while Burke isn't a defensive star either, he isn't much worse (if at all) than Davis. And, while he's definitely not your first choice at third base, in an emergency situation, he'd be able to give you time at 3B/1B.
  16. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Mar 18, 2005 -> 03:33 AM) You seem to forget that it all comes down to money with the Pirates. That's why Littlefield was robbed in the Aramis Ramirez trade. That's why he traded Jason Kendall. And that's why he would likely be open to dealing Mackowiak. Mackowiak may not even be a starter for the Pirates this year. Even though Mackowiak's $1.5 million salary sounds dirt cheap to us, he is still only under a 1-year contract and will be set to earn even more money next season. Why, then, would we want him? I think his value is right around what he's making right now -- and next year, he's going to get more money, a lot more money than he's worth. For this year, yes -- it'd be nice, if we can get him for a bag of balls. But not for Harris + Adkins/Diaz...
  17. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Mar 18, 2005 -> 03:14 AM) Good backup backstop, horrible frontline backstop. I could see the Dodgers wanting him though. They were interested in him a month or so ago. Hell, Davis could start for them. Not on a Paul DePodesta team, I doubt it. I think he'd go with Ross before Davis.
  18. Ben Davis, a frontline backstop? Maybe for the Royals...
  19. Steff, I dunno if you've already mentioned it or not, but do you believe Raffy? And, we all know he's lying. He took at least one performance enhancing drug (and I'm not talking about the 'roids)...
  20. WTF is going on? Wake losing to Chatanooga? 'Zona losing to Utah State (my dad's alma madar [sp?], so I'm happy for them )? While I personally didn't do a bracket this year, because I felt it was a waste of my money to actually do one, this is going to f*** up a hell of a lot of brackets across the country. Some of my buddies have 'Zona beating OSU and then beating the Illini, and I know a lot of people having Wake making the final four. Any thoughts? I've been watching the 'Congress/Steroid' stuff, anyone want to comment on either of these games?
  21. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Mar 18, 2005 -> 12:43 AM) We should've pitched Felix Diaz against them instead of the Royals. He tends to do well against minor league teams.
  22. s*** -- Steff, if you're still reading this, it's not on the Score anymore. I just went to pick up my brother from the train station, it's not on.
  23. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Mar 17, 2005 -> 09:07 AM) I could see them taking Willie & Diaz or Willie & Adkins. They would get a possible 5th starter in either Diaz or Adkins and could play Willie in CF or platoon him with Jose Castillo at 2B. Of course, I'd rather dump Diaz than Adkins since I can't stand watching his slow, straight fastball get rocked. :puke Trading Harris and Diaz (or Adkins) for Mack would be an absolute waste. One backup who doesn't do anything particularly well for two young guys, all three of which can have an affect on the team in the upcoming years -- or used in a better trade.
  24. McGuire -- f*** off. Yes you can answer whether or not posting a sign in a locker room will do some good... He's acting like he's blind to the whole situation -- what a SOB.
  25. YES! I love this guy who's talking to McGuire now.
