QUOTE(Steff @ Mar 17, 2005 -> 07:44 PM) Oh holy s***.. now Raffy is directing comments to Jose. Unreal... And what's with all the "poor me when I was a kid.." crap..? McGuire danced around it (I'm listening to the feed now). He talked about how he wants to tell kids the dangers of steriods. Pure bulls***. Did you do it or not?

Mark Prior still feels pain in his elbow

I'm at school right now, my buddy just showed me either on ESPN.com or mlb.com that it's saying neither Prior nor Wood will be ready for Opening Day... -
Guillen: McCarthy 'best pitcher we have right now'
CWSGuy406 replied to Jabroni's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(Jabroni @ Mar 17, 2005 -> 07:01 AM) McCarthy has an 87 - 91 MPH fastball which is more than enough heat (think Buehrle) considering he changes speeds so well with his changeup. His curveball is excellent and Rooney and Farmer said it may even be the best on the roster. His control is outstanding (think Maddux). I even think his fastball is a bit faster -- Jason said he's seen Mac top out at 95 when he wants to give someone some high heat, but he's right in the range you indicated. EDIT: And while velocity isn't everything, you'd hope that he fills out his frame a little bit more and adds some more bite to that heater... -
QUOTE(Jabroni @ Mar 17, 2005 -> 12:12 AM) A platoon of Crede and Mackowiak at 3B WOULD be an upgrade. Let Crede face lefties and Mackowiak face righties. Mackowiak would also give us a ridiculous amount of defense and speed off the bench, as well as a pretty good pinch-hitter. Well, Crede has a .778 OPS against lefties over the past three seasons. So, would Mack be an upgrade? Yeah. Worth giving up Harris, Borchard, and Adkins? Nah. Oh -- and I've pre-ordered my AL "Ozuna" All-Star jersey.

QUOTE(Jabroni @ Mar 17, 2005 -> 12:08 AM) He's not great but he's far from worthless. Inferring that any player fighting for playing time on a 90-loss team sucks is simply retarded. OK -- just wanted to be sure on that double standard that witesoxfan mentioned. Mmmk.
-
Wait -- by using green on your Bobby Hill comment, are you inferring that Bobby Hill is actually good?

White Sox Player Will Be The First To Go?
CWSGuy406 replied to AddisonStSox's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Mar 16, 2005 -> 10:31 PM) As a proven ML hitter in a backup capacity Burke has trade value. An RPG of 6.06 for 120AB is pretty good. His value won't materialize unless another team's starter goes down. In that scenario he definitely has some trade value. To the ChiSox he represents an easy call-up if Davis should suck again. Proven major league hitter? After less than 150 AB's he's proven? -
QUOTE(Pauly8509CWS @ Mar 16, 2005 -> 04:28 AM) You sure?? My high school was lookin for one and i could've sworn they talked to KW about sending him the rights of the next Canseco... Yeah, the good one, Ozzie Canseco... Come on now, Tom. We all know teams are foaming at the mouths to get their hands on Joe Borchard. (No green needed for obvious sarcasm).

As far as Frank vs. Pauly: So what if he can't play the field anymore? People always use that in an argument against Frank, I don't see it. Is Konerko by any means a defensive star in the field? No. Is he terrible? No. He's right in the middle, meaning I don't think he's hurting us defensively, but he's not in the upper-tier as far as defensive 1st-basemen (IMHO). One difference between Konerko and Thomas, is that I think Thomas would sign for less, after his option year. I know Konerko has been saying all the right things, and if he's true to it -- than that's just great, and there's no discussion needed. But he might also see guys like Sexson and Glaus and Delgado, getting upwards of ten million dollars a year. All I'm saying is, if Konerko starts demanding that, you can't give that to him. It'd hamper this team way, way too much. EDIT: And, FWIW, Thomas still had a .432 road OBP. He dips in power, but he's still a force at the plate -- the same can't be said for Konerko... (on the road)
-
Jim, any comment on Jerry Owens? He played an awful lot and he looks pretty good at the plate, he seems to know what he's doing -- but that's just from watching on TV and listening to the radio. Looks like he has some good plate discipline, but when he needed to he was able to get the bunt down -- plus he's lightning quick. What do you think about him, having seen him live?
-
I personally believe Frank is more useful to this team as a player, and if they restructure, Thomas should get 6-8 million per year from us. Let's see how Konerko fairs away from US Cellular before he gets a Sexson/Glaus-like contract...

QUOTE(Jabroni @ Mar 16, 2005 -> 03:19 AM) Trade Borchard and Willie to the Pirates for Rob Mackowiak and a prospect. Keep dreamin'... :rolly

I made a couple of moves myself. I figured that it was time for B-Mac to hit the show, and since I figure I got another righty coming through the system in Honel (I probably made his potential a little too good at four stars, but I thought the time it was fair), so I traded Garcia for K-Rod. And man, does he have some filthy stuff! I also traded Marte because he was b****ing in the clubhouse (and not pitching well because of it) for a couple of Texas prospects. Anyways, my team is now: C-Pierz 1B-Gload/Ginter 2B-Iguchi 3B-Crede (hitting damn well for me at .300 -- use the down swing with him, and go the other way -- it works) SS-Uribe LF-Rowand CF-Pods RF-Everett/Werth DH-Thomas Rotation of Buehrle, B-Mac, Oliver Perez, El Duque, and Kazmir -- with a bullpen that includes Shingo, K-Rod, Bobby Jenks, Dustin Hermanson, and Arnie Munoz -- and my favorite, Juan Cruz. Oh, and in my last game (I play on All-Star), I had 16 hits for eight runs. No home runs. I was just bashin the ball, it was great. Off of a pretty good pitcher, too, in Ted Lilly.

QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ Mar 15, 2005 -> 10:32 PM) What do we do with him once Frank is back? Super sub? Or trade him? or what? Well, if Dye continues his dismal hitting vs. righties, you could certainly platoon the two -- though I don't know if either would settle for 'platooning'. It'll be a nice problem to have, though, if Everett needs to be in the lineup everyday. It might come down to Podsednik not coming close to his '03 numbers, and Everett being put in left with Rowand in center and Dye in right. Who knows...

Sox vs. "Insert Location"Angels "Location?"

QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Mar 15, 2005 -> 09:53 PM) That'd be someone that won't ever sniff the jock of a major league roster. Why? 'Cause he made an error? He's probably in the top three as far as MIF prospects, I'll be interested in seeing what he, along with Andy Gonzalez, do this season at their respective clubs. -

The national attention has begun. He is, without a doubt, the best prospect in our system. He's our Jeff Francis. I think next year he'll have his shot at being a starter for us. Ozzie seems to be in love with the kid.

QUOTE(Jabroni @ Mar 15, 2005 -> 08:59 PM) Most importantly of all, Fields has to work on his defense at 3B. Fields is a good enough athlete, he'll adjust. His arm is good, though some complain that he's still throwing like a QB, but I'm not worried about his defense. He's gotta get a grasp on the strike zone. Above all else, that's what we need from him if he's going to be our future 3rd-baseman. The power will come (if it hasn't already) -- he's gotta make some strides this year on his K and BB numbers. -

QUOTE(Athomeboy_2000 @ Mar 15, 2005 -> 08:56 PM) Has fields played well this sping? I havent been able to follow spring trainign this year. Fields is no-where near MLB ready, regardless of how he's done in Spring Training. This is sort of a bad thing, having these ST games on Comcast. Guys will go 12-20 and impress the hell out of people, even though they're clearly not ready for the majors. Fields is one case. I don't know how he's performed, but he still has to get a grasp on the strike zone before we start annointing him as our Scott Rolen. Give him a full year at AA, see how he does. No need to rush him, even if Crede is performing sub-par...
