KW says Sox in "Buyer's Mode"
CWSGuy406 replied to South Side Fireworks Man's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Kenny saying "buyer's mode" is different than a GM like Omar Minaya saying the Mets are in "buyers mode". I'm taking this to mean that if (or, more appropriatey, when) Kenny trades Dye, Iguchi and/or Contreras, he's looking for young players who can step in and play within the next year. I think he feels that he's built up a strong enough rotation to where the Sox won't have to go through a total "rebuilding" mode, so he wants guys like Richar who, at the very least, will be competing for a spot in 2008. I don't take this to mean the Sox will be offering Gio Gonzalez and Ryan Sweeney for Ken Griffey in an effort to save 2007. -
QUOTE(Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 03:15 PM) Murray - "What if he died?" Arj Barkers character - "What if he did what?" Murray - "No, I'm saying what if he died?" Arj Barkers character - "I know, what is it that he did?" "What was that thing he always said?" "Wh-ut?" "Yeah, that's it. 'Wh-ut, wh-ut'?" "He's always questioning. Wh-in. Wh-in's our next gig?"

The D'Backs sent down Carlos Quentin a couple days ago. They're in desparate need of offense -- could the Sox possibly get him for Dye and a pitching prospect (Broadway or McColloch)? I don't think they'd want Contreras unless the Sox ate a bunch of money...
-
Couple of thoughts... -Agreed with Beck about the bullpen. Right now it looks like you have two bullpen locks for next season in Jenks and Logan. If Thorton and MacDougal aren't traded, I'd guess both are with the team next season. That leaves just a couple of spots open. I'd try to give Wasserman, Perez, Vasquez and Day extended looks by the end of the season. Throw a bunch of 'em at the wall and hope one or two stick. -I don't think the Sox are going to go after a second baseman this winter. It looks like the Richar move was made with Richar being viewed as the future second baseman. So far he hasn't dissappointed, and although he doesn't have the track record (prior this season) to back it up, I'm not seeing any other better option. I don't really want Iguchi back and I wouldn't be a fan of giving Castillo a three-four year deal as his power appears to be completely sapped and I can't see him keeping that .355ish OBP up for too much longer. -If the Sox are going to go after a cheaper OF option (the people not named Ichiro, Torii or Andruw) I'd look at Milton Bradley. He's not going to command as much money as any of the other outfielders -- he'll get less money and years than Rowand, too -- and he seems like the type of player that Kenny would go after.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 8, 2007 -> 09:26 PM) Other than that, I REALLY don't want to see Torii Hunter given a 4 year $48M deal by the Sox. That would come back to bight 'em in the ass within 2 years. You wouldn't do 4/$48? I think I'd probably do that -- four years isn't at all terrible. That's probably the highest I'd go, though. He's still a decent enough defender and moving to natural grass would probably be better on his knees. Plus, even if he's only an average hitter (which he hasn't been the last two years -- he's been about a 120 OPS+ player, well above average for CF), I'd still say he's close to being worth it. But yeah, Ichiro would definitely be my first target. Why is that? Anderson had a chance to show the Sox that they'd made a mistake (going with Erstad) by going down to Charlotte and absolutely tearing the cover off the ball. Instead, he's gone down and put up a .753 OPS. If he wants to even have a shot of being anything more than a 4th OFer on the Sox next season, he better have one stellar second half. I also understand that Anderson has been playing with a bum shoulder, but at this point, I don't think he has much of a future with the Sox as Luis Terrero looks to be taking well to that 4th OF spot.

Mark Buehrle Agrees to 4-yr, 56 mil with escalator clause

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Jul 8, 2007 -> 09:15 PM) I apologize for calling JR a cheap bastard. KW has a long way to go to get an apology, mainly having an organization that isn't bereft of overall talent. For both our sakes let's hope KW found something in Richar. Having cheap options at two spots in the infield gives Kenny a lot of flexibility in going after an OFer this winter (I'm talking, of course, about the man in your sig). -
QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Jul 8, 2007 -> 09:03 PM) De Los Santos has got a wicked breaking ball. I wouldn't call it wicked. It sort of seems like he's throwing a slurve as opposed to a hard slider or a straight curve. Not saying that's a bad thing... Looks like he's got a good fastball, though. Good movement.

DLS in the game. DLS in the game.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 8, 2007 -> 08:51 PM) The BoSox could still have interest in another Sox starter, but it won't be Buehrle Would the Angels have interest in a starter, considering Santana's and Colon's struggles? I'd still love to have Santana, even with his problems this year. His K/BB rate is okay, but gosh damn is that guy giving up some homers...

I hope Javy's arm doesn't fall off, but kudos for another fantastic outing.

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jul 8, 2007 -> 08:09 PM) Who doesn't? Why hasn't he pitched since the 28th? Is Great Falls on some irregular schedule, or do they have a quirky rotation?

QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 8, 2007 -> 07:45 PM) And you do know I hate the Cubs more than anyone, right? Of course, but in that hate, you also tend to overrate them and some of their moves from time to time. -

The Brewers should be okay. If things get bad enough with their rotation, eventually they'll have to just go put Gallardo back into the rotation. I'm still waiting for the Cards to make a push, too. They're only four behind the Cubs and haven't had anything go right for them in the first half. With Carpenter coming back and hopefully a little more luck in the second half, they should make a push. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 8, 2007 -> 07:34 PM) They're just not a very good team. Certainly not nearly as good as your the Cubs, right? -

QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 8, 2007 -> 06:47 PM) Brewers offense looking like hell going into the ASB. Former Charlotte Knight Tim Redding is dominating the Brewers today. Sigh... -
Also, here's a video from a poster over at the 300 Level on a great pass from Kane leading to a Berti goal. http://s204.photobucket.com/albums/bb280/H...=Kane-Berti.flv

I went today (Friday). I'll echo the commets about Toews and Kane -- they were the show. Kane wasn't at his best -- he missed a wide open net and also missed his 'shootout' shot -- but he still displayed amazing vision and patience in the offensive zone. He's got this great move where he goes hard to the corner, stops on a dime and makes a great spin move back towards the blueline, giving him time to scan the zone freely for a second or two. But Toews is just a man among boys. Everytime he went into the corner, he came out with the puck or got it to somebody on his line. He's got a very good shot, particularly displaying an impressive backhand. I recall one just one where the Toews/Kane line played in their defensive zone. As far as the non 'top' guys, Simon Danis-Pepin, the 6"7 defensman, was very impressive starting a couple of rushes and just exuding a lot of confidence when he had the puck. He challenged forecheckers with the puck and really didn't seem to have any problems skating right around 'em.

Red Sox/White Sox Trade Proposal

QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 5, 2007 -> 11:53 PM) Until Theo has more World Series rings than KW, it's really hard to make one out to be so much better than the other. If KW had an unlimited payroll, he'd be a pretty damn good GM then. Yeah -- it's gotta be nice for Theo to know that he can waste $105 million this past on two declining offensive players (who have combined for an OPS+ of about 70 -- very nice) and still have enough payroll room to add a great starting pitcher in Dice-K. -
Red Sox/White Sox Trade Proposal
CWSGuy406 replied to redandwhite's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
Boston has absolutely NO leverage in offering Wily Mo straight up for Buehrle. He really doesn't have a place in the Red Sox organization. Neither JD Drew or Manny are going anywhere within the next two years, Coco Crisp is finally starting to hit and, if he doesn't, I'd guess they'd go to Ellsbury. There's also Moss who's a decent prospect. This isn't to say Wily Mo is a bad player -- I'd love for the Sox to nab him -- but outside of a bench/platoon player, his value is extremely limited within the Red Sox organization. -
QUOTE(JDsDirtySox @ Jul 5, 2007 -> 03:45 AM) 2. Josh Fields is looking better and better as our future LFer every day. Que? Even if Fields only becomes an average defender at third, moving him to LF significantly decreases his value. His bat projects to be above average for a third baseman, but if you put him in LF, he's more of an average player.

QUOTE(shipps @ Jul 4, 2007 -> 09:58 PM) On paper it would be amazing but a part of me is anxious to see Noah play for the Bulls. He will fit in really well with this team.Although Noah and Tyrus dont have many low post skills they still have the ability to score inside points by always being active under the hoop. They have the potential to be a big time inside scoring threat. Are you kidding? Gasol had a PER (Player Efficiency Rating) of 24.1 last year, which is well above anybody on the Bulls roster. If Memphis wants is Noah, Duhon and Nocioni, Paxson should take that deal and go run around Chicago laughing hysterically. Hell, I'd give them Gordon, Noah and Nocioni -- getting a guy who is going to give you 20 + 9 a night would be well worth losing a starter and two decent bench/energy guys. -

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jul 4, 2007 -> 07:41 PM) The Cubs are a very mediocre NL team with a few very good hitters in the lineup. Unfortunately for us, mediocre in the NL Central is good enough for second place. And with a little luck, it might just win them the division. I hope St Louis gets going a bit. Carpenter just made his first rehab start and should be back in the next few weeks, and they just got Maroth who should be an average-ish starter in the NL. I don't expect them to win the division, but gosh damn, make that race a little more exciting.

QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 4, 2007 -> 01:28 AM) Carlos Marmol has been doing his best K-Rod impersonation lately. This Cubs team is pretty damn good right now. I just think they're a very streaky team who's going good right now. They still have offensive zeros at two positions (C and SS), AAAA players at two positions (CF and 2B) -- one of which is hitting .350 right now -- and below average production at another position (RF). That being said, Soriano, Ramirez and Lee can carry a lineup even if the reest of the team goes 0-fer so long as they're going well.
