Official 2006-2007 NBA Discussion Thread

If I were a Cavs fan I would be absolutely livid. LeBron got absolutely RAPED on that drive with ten seconds left and no call. He got hit before his spin move and as he was going up, yet nothing. There also could have been a whistle on 'Sheed's baseline fadeaway, but I can understand the reluctancy to blow the whistles on that play, and that mop-top (Verezjow?) certainly does his share of flopping. -
Jason Marquis is the worst two month sub-3.00 ERA pitcher I've ever seen. How the hell are NL teams not hitting the snot out of him? His delivery is woefully inconsistent and it's bad to begin with -- he has an inconsistent landing with his lead leg. Not to mention he throws about one pitch because his breaking stuff sucks.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ May 24, 2007 -> 09:06 PM) I'm a huge Brewer fan as well, but he just isn't a need for the Bulls. There is honestly too many good inside post players in this draft to take a wing, imo. With Hibbert gone, is Hawes going to fall to the Bulls? And is he your man? Honestly, I agree with you on the need of the big man. I think I'd rather see the Bulls not make a pick at all and see if they can get Gasol away from Memphis. -

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ May 23, 2007 -> 05:09 AM) Screw any wing players in the draft, unless of course the Bulls deal Gordon or Nocioni for a big that they like (and than we draft a wing player). Brewer was probably the best player for Florida during the tourney. The kid's lengthy as hell -- isn't he 6"9? -- and one of the best real athletes in the draft. The thing is though, he's an athlete who can flat out play. He's tough matchup for anyone who goes up against him because of his length, he can take it to the rim and finish, he can pull-up and he can hit the three. If either of Horford or Brewer happen to fall to nine, I'd hate to see the Bulls pass. On the other hand, if they take Joakim Noah, I'll just about pull my hair out. Dude's got no post game and absolutely got MANHANDLED by Oden. His ceiling is very limited. -
Next week the wonderkid gets introduced. Tuesday, I think. Yup -- Tuesday.

QUOTE(fathom @ May 24, 2007 -> 02:36 AM) But what would we do if AJ got hurt in the 9th inning? I'm trying to figure out how to insert a Toby Hall at firstbase joke here, but nothing is coming.
-
Too bad we don't have a hitter off the bench who does very well against lefties... oh, right, hey Toby Hall, how you doin'?
-
QUOTE(fathom @ May 24, 2007 -> 02:32 AM) Why Timo when you need an extra base hit? Why not Toby Hall or Terrero? We just got managerial-owned that inning.

Is Crede available, if only for a pinch-hit here?

F*** ESPN for not having the Liverpool/Milan match in high-def.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ May 23, 2007 -> 05:09 AM) I'd love either Wright from UNC, Horford or Hibbert. Although I must say I would settle with Noah (even though I think he is almost a Ben Wallace clone (Because in the long term, 1-2 years I expect Wallace to get dealt again and at that point in a worse case scenario, Noah could fit in). The only reason I even mention Noah though is because I wouldn't pass on his potential/upside/athletism if those other guys were off the board. I'd stay far, far away from Noah. He has a very weak post-game, and the Bulls need an impact type player with this pick. I could see him becoming a player similar to Mikey Moore of the Nets this year, but IMO you should be looking for better than that with the ninth overall pick. If you can trade up a couple of spots and grab whichever big man falls (Wright, Hibbert, Horford, Jianlian), that'd work too, but I don't know what you'd have to give up to move up three-four spots. -

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ May 23, 2007 -> 04:05 AM) Who is our scorer from the outside w/out Gordon? The lane would be totally clogged up because than the only person who could hit a 3 on this team would be Hinrich. And Hinrich isnt even all that great at it... Well, the idea of getting a big man and running your offense through a big man is that it opens up shots for people. I don't like having an offense that primarily relies on the three ball. Ben Gordon would be missed, but you gain a lot on the defensive end just because Gordon is off the floor. Skiles can still run a motion type offense, you just have to run different types of cuts when the big man gets the ball on the block. I think this could help Deng a lot, too. Finally, It's easier to find a guy who will bury some threes than it is to find a guy who can play as well as Gasol can with his back to the basket. Onto the draft -- if the Bulls keep the pick, ideally I'd love to have one of Hibbert or Horford. If not, I think Brewer would fit very well on the Bulls. -

Would Memphis still be interested in the Bulls' first round pick? I still have my eye on Gasol, unless there's a chance that Hibbert falls to the Bulls. Ninth overall + Gordon + Nocioni probably wouldn't get it done, would it? -
Go home, Detroit.

QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ May 23, 2007 -> 12:04 AM) It'll be online too, which is odd. This means Sony has now canceled single player modes for two of it's biggest releases(this and WarHawk) just so they can digitally distribute it. I'm not complaining, but it seems risky though. BW, I think it was you that commented on this a while back, but when can we expect the Wii's to become more freely available?

QUOTE(fathom @ May 22, 2007 -> 10:33 PM) Neither of them was close to being in the mid 90s during the 2nd half of last year. At the most, both have lost about 2 mph consistently on their fastball. Same goes with Jenks and Aardsma. I was pretty happy with Jose (velocity wise) last night. He was consistently at 92 with his fastball and hit 93 a couple of times. It's certainly not the 94-96 that he used to be at, but if he has that forkball working and is effectively pitching up in the zone, Jose should be okay.

Jonathan Toews will wear #19 next year for the 'Hawks -- so you folks with old Calder jerseys are pretty lucky. Toews will also be introduced to the media sometime next week, per CBH.com.

QUOTE(SoxFanForever @ May 22, 2007 -> 05:52 PM) PS3 or 360? I plan to get one and I am looking for opinions of people who have one or both? Pros, cons, etc. I've read other sites but I trust people who have good enough taste to be sox fans first. Whadda ya got? I was a Playstation person up until about a half a year ago when I decided I was too impatient to wait for a PS3, so I went and got the 360. No complaints so far. Graphics are superb, online play is solid. I can't comment on the PS3, although I'm sure it is an equally strong system. My recommendation to you would be to look at the upcoming games and decide on that. I'm not sure what's ahead on PS3's front, but for 360, you have the afformentioned Halo 3 (360 exclusive) and Grand Theft Auto 4 (not sure if it's exclusive or not). Besides me being impatient, one of the reasons I went with 360 is because that's the system most of my other friends have, and as petty as this might sound, I didn't want to be "stuck in the cold" with a 'foreign' system. Plus, I have uber-expectations for Halo 3 online -- I'm expecting great things there. I really don't think you can go wrong on what system you go with, but I'd say look at the games already out and the games that are set to come out and make your decision off of that.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 22, 2007 -> 12:15 PM) Now that's funny. And I noticed everyone avoided commenting on it... Avoiding it, or you just avoiding posts? I think the latter. Sleepy is making the argument that we shouldn't rip on poor Darin because he's been the world's tallest midget in this lineup. I'm not going to applaud him for sucking slightly less than everybody else. Sleepy made the comment: When in reality, a .270/.320/.360 line -- as bad as that is -- is pretty much what should've been expected. But here -- I'll give you your cookie. Hurray Darin! Keep hitting those singles and getting on-base at a below average rate! Woohoo!

QUOTE(Sonik22 @ May 22, 2007 -> 01:42 AM) This fall is gonna be the greatest in gaming history. Halo 3 (beta is amazing already), Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Grand Theft Auto 4. Can't wait, my 360 is gonna overheat! When does CoD4 come out? ------------------------------------------------------------- Anyone else play Oblivion? If so, I have a few questions: - What does sleeping do? How often should I sleep? - What's the trick with the persuasion thing? What's it for, exactly? Any other little tips would be appreciated, too.

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ May 22, 2007 -> 05:28 AM) Geez, I know it goes against what all the soxtalk experts predicted as far as Erstad being horrible and worthless, but it shouldn't have to deter you so much from giving the guy a little credit when it's due. Erstad's OBP sits at .315 after tonight. Among CFers who play everyday for their teams in the AL, I could find two CFers who had a lower OBP than that -- Corey Patterson and Coco Crisp. If you did this for leadoff hitters, I'm sure it would be even worse. Erstad has been every bit as bad at the plate as most of us expected. In fact, the line he's putting up right now -- .269/.315/.353 -- looks exactly like what various projections systems pegged him at. I'm glad Erstad has made most of his hits count, and he's done a pretty good job in CF outside of the weak arm. None of that changes the fact that he's still a bad offensive player, and unfortunate as it is, he's the best option the team has out in CF right now. If that $6 million option is activated, though, there are going to be a lot of (rightfully so) pissed of people.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ May 21, 2007 -> 02:21 AM) Well it's went from an all time bad deal to just a horrible trade for Texas with the recent turn of events. Wow -- judging the trade on a start-to-start basis. Pure brilliance!

QUOTE(DrunkBomber @ May 21, 2007 -> 02:26 AM) This was a good episode. Its interesting to see a different side of Turtle. Did Turtle drop his name? I didn't think so, but maybe I missed it? I said this last episode, but it just seems like something is going to blow up for someone soon as everything has gone well for the group the past two episodes. It'll be interesting to see if their collective string of 'good luck' continues in the next couple weeks.

Since we don't seem to have a catch-all video game thread -- we probably should -- I know that people in the past have brought up the game Oblivion for XBox 360. I just rented it as I'm looking for a decent game to get into to tide me over until some of the fall/winter games (Halo, GTA, NCAA Football, Madden) come out. Anyways -- can somebody direct me to a website that gives a type of 'tutorial' on Oblivion? I'm familar with these types of RPGs -- I played Diablo for the computer which seems very similar -- but I'm still quite confused as to what everything does, what stuff you should be picking up, what some of the symbols mean.

Jackie is exactly right here. People complain that the Sox didn't spend money last winter yet don't bring up an actual player. Should the Sox have brought in Alfonso Soriano, an average (at best) LFer -- left-field being the spot where you put your worst defender -- for $130 million? Maybe they should have outbid Houston for Carlos Lee? People are b****ing about something that hasn't happened yet. In JR's past, all the money that has been made has been put directly into the club. When the Sox do well (attendence + revenue wise), the Sox spend money. When the Sox don't do well -- well, lucky for us, it's been almost eight years since the Sox were truly out of it in September. So long as the Sox stay in the race the majority of the way this year, attendence should be strong throughout the summer. This winter, I count four (!) potential free agents who are better than ANY of last winter -- Andruw Jones, Ichiro, A-Rod and Zambrano. That's not to mention two of the best free agents to ever hit the market in the coming winters in Santana and Miggy Cabrera. I would be absolutely STUNNED if the Sox payroll goes down next winter. If they lose Buehrle and Dye and Iguchi, the money will be invested somewhere. Maybe instead of devoting all that lost money to the free agent market, the Sox use all of those compensation picks in the 2008 draft to grab multiple signability-issue prospects.
