  1. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Apr 24, 2007 -> 04:00 AM) How so? Other GMs were throwing 5-7.5 million at similar players. Kenny re-signed the same type of player for at least 2 million less than the going rate. He was off to a great start and is injured. Injuries are KW's fault? Since when? You seem to be under the assumption that Scott Podsednik is worth any money whatsoever. He's not. What does he do well? Get on base? Nope -- it's been more than a year-and-a-half since Pods has gotten on base consistently. Steal bases well? Nope -- last year, without even counting pickoffs, Podsednik stealing percentage was 67%. That's not good. Need I mention getting caught not once but TWICE by Victor Martinez early this season...? Plays defense well? Nope -- his arm sucks and he gets awful reads in LF. Tell me -- would this team miss a beat if Podsednik were to be cut and the Sox went out and picked up Eduardo Perez? I certainly don't think so. A Mackowiak/Ozuna/Anderson (or Terrero rather than BA) platoon could do a much better job than Pods. Since you're very ignorant, I'm not going to get too upset about this. You're talking to one of the few people who wasn't flipping s*** about the Garcia trade; one of the few people who, at the time of the trade, said that the talent package we were receiving from Texas was similar or better than B-Mac (I had other gripes about the trade, let it be understood); and one of many who liked the Vazquez resigning. Outside of the Podsednik deal, I loved KW's offseason. He made us better in 2008 and beyond, and the "step-back" that was supposed to be there in 2007 might not even be that huge (if at all). Yes -- it was fine in terms of the market value, but I don't really want to compare Kenny to either of those GMs. The Matthews deal was a stupid one from the moment it was signed -- giving a guy who has his best season at age 31 (?) a multi-year deal. Ditto the Pierre deal. Podsednik just isn't a very good ballplayer, as I've noted above. He hasn't been for a year in a half. For him to be effective at all, he needs to be able to run really fast. And when he tries to run really fast, he gets hurt.
  2. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Apr 24, 2007 -> 02:28 AM) He may have a better arm, but Erstad's range has been exceptional, and so has his quickness. Uh ok. KW made some pretty awesome moves this winter. I think he's referring to the resigning of Scott Podsednik, which has to be looked at as KW's worst move of the winter.
  3. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Apr 24, 2007 -> 01:23 AM) Guess you're not done. We'll bury the hatchet till another day. I'll focus my 'pissed-off-ness' at this crappy offense I'm watching.
  4. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Apr 24, 2007 -> 01:19 AM) Seems to me like you misread BA's uniform all the time, thinking it says, "Good ballplayer." Miserable attempt at humor?
  5. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Apr 24, 2007 -> 01:03 AM) I'm full of it because I think BA's terrible? Give me a break. No, you're full of it because you can't read.
  6. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Apr 23, 2007 -> 11:12 PM) The WHIP sucks, but an ERA of 2.50 in that ballpark with a K/9 of 8.5 is impressive. He had that one game where he gave up about 12 hits and a couple walks, too. I just want to see good peripherals starting to form by mid-June, specifically K/9, BB/9 and, if he truly is a pitcher suited for the Cell, a good GB/FB ratio.
  7. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Apr 23, 2007 -> 08:17 PM) How is Floyd doing exactly? So far, decent but not great. 18 IP, 2.50 ERA, 20 H, 7 BB, 17 Ks.
  8. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Apr 23, 2007 -> 06:23 PM) Yeah, I agree, it'd definitely be great to use for those people who think Guillen has handled the Anderson/Erstad situation well.
  9. QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Apr 23, 2007 -> 06:45 PM) After the Javy aquisition, what would have been the best way? Rest guys when they clearly weren't pitching well (and, after the season, admitted they were hurt)? Like Buehrle in the second half or Garcia in the first half? You know, do what they said they'd do when Vazquez was first acquired...?
  10. QUOTE(caulfield12 @ Apr 23, 2007 -> 01:08 PM) I'm sure you didn't include Sunday's stats in those lines, did you? What do Sunday's stats have to do with anything? Placing Erstad, a guy who's OBP over his last 700 ABs is bordering .320, at the top of ANY lineup isn't a good idea, period. Five softly hit, perfectly placed singles aren't going to change anyone's mind about that.
  11. Ozzie didn't do anything wrong. Jenks has thrown what, three days in a row? It was the right move to go with someone not named Bobby Jenks in the ninth. As far as leaving Garland in for the ninth -- it's a coinflip there. I wouldn't have minded either decision as Garland was at 105 pitches. I know we're going to hear a lot about Aardsma not having the balls to pitch in the ninth... whatever... he had a bad game at the wrong time. I just hope his arm doesn't fall off by seasons end, as he seems to be the most used reliever on the Sox. Other than one loaf to a ball and a bad pitch (two if you want to count Logan's), the Sox played well and should've came out of here with a sweep. Frustrating that they couldn't finish it, but they played well for the whole series and took two at Detroit. I'll leave Konerko alone as I'm sure he'll get 'beaten up' -- and deservedly so -- enough.
  12. QUOTE(zenryan @ Apr 22, 2007 -> 08:02 PM) the boys are going to try and win in spite of BA LOL -- There are plenty of other 'goats' ahead of BA in this game. Good to see Masset pitch over BA's stupid gaffe, though.
  13. QUOTE(GreenSox @ Apr 22, 2007 -> 04:49 PM) And Crede's much better defensively - in my opinion. Heh. I take it you haven't seen much of Adrian Beltre on defense.
  14. QUOTE(SoxFanForever @ Apr 22, 2007 -> 05:06 AM) He dislikes Anderson enough to use him as a PR for Thome and then let Anderson's defense rot on the bench while Pablo is out in LF in a tie game. I wouldn't be so sure Ozzie is going to make the "smart" move. Yeah -- a game like today tells you all you need to know about where Anderson resides in Guillen's mind right now. A lefty on the mound with Erstad looking like total ass at the plate lately (even with the two hit game -- those two hits couldn't have been hit in more perfect spots). Ozzie's reasoning for not wanting Anderson in the game today? He didn't want Anderson and Molina starting in the same game. What the hell is that supposed to mean? Even if Ozzie wants to use the bulls*** lines like, "Erstad is doing the little things well" -- is Erstad going to do his "little-things" in the seven spot? Hitting behind Crede? Sorry... I'm not buying it. It'd be one thing if Erstad was looking good at the plate, ie hitting some balls hard and getting unlucky, but that's not the case. He looks awful at the plate -- I'm sure a lot of people saw his AB vs Zumaya today, right? That was probably the most embarrassing AB I've seen this year. Zumaya didn't even throw his breaking ball and Erstad looked pathetic. I'd almost go so far as to say that he's lucky to be hitting .170 right now. If this were any other player, Ozzie would've definitely given the guy a day off. But at this point it seems like he's trying to prove a point rather than doing what's best for the team. This situation is absolutely f***ing ridiculous. There's no reason why Anderson isn't playing CF for the Knights everyday (he should be playing CF for the Sox, but I digress) with Terrero up here on the bench.
  15. QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Apr 21, 2007 -> 02:17 PM) Erstad is actually a significantly better defensive CF than Anderson. Both Cowley and Gregor have reported that Anderson has trouble going back on balls and implied he doesn't give maximum effort in the OF. This argument holds no water. Find stats that say he's better. Find respectable scouts saying he's better. That's absolutely laughable that Erstad, at 32 (?) years old, is a better defender than Anderson. You keep beating that same damn drum, and it means nothing.
  16. QUOTE(danman31 @ Apr 22, 2007 -> 12:29 AM) Broadway is listed as 6-4, 190 pounds. He shouldn't be lopped in with those two in terms of lankiness. The comparison is a bad one in the first place. You're (not you, just in general) talking about one guy who had great K/9 and K/BB ratios all the way to the majors, pretty much dominating every level in the process, and another who gives up high H/9 numbers and who has very mediocre K/9 numbers. The comparison doesn't fit.
  17. So, I come home from Marquette for the weekend, and a high school buddy IMs me, asking what I'm doing tomorrow. Well -- I'm supposed to use this weekend to work on a speech for Monday, but he offers up a ticket to the playoff game tomorrow. The speech will take a back seat. I'm pretty pumped, although.... I sort of feel bad. I consider myself a Bulls fan, but I'm not nearly as hardcore about them as I am the Sox or Hawks. In reality, I don't deserve this ticket, but I'll do my best to root for a Bulls victory tomorrow. As far as the game itself, I hope Skiles doesn't bury Thomas like he did Wednesday. I think a quicker Bulls team can take it to the Heat, so I'd hope to see more Sefolosha and less Malik Allen/Adrian Griffen -- although I doubt that will happen. Finally, the foundation of Hinrich, Deng and Gordon all have to be good. I don't think any one of them has to be great -- so long as the defense is there -- but all three need to be good. Go Bulls!
  18. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Apr 21, 2007 -> 01:43 AM) Off the top of my head I don't think Casey has drastic splits between LHP and RHP. And now MacDougal. Christ. 15 relievers to get through three innings.
  19. I hate moves like this. Aardsma is dealing, and we bring in a LOOGY to face Casey. He's not Barry Bonds -- Aardsma is throwing the best out of any guy in our bullpen. Let him get two more outs.
  20. A-Rod is f***ing amazing right now. Romero threw a couple of sliders down-and-in, and A-Rod didn't even budge -- he wasn't going to try to offer at them. He got helped on a close pitch from the ump, but on 3-2, he rips a double down the line. If he becomes a free agent, I hope Kenny offers $20 million for him. Fill the rest of the team (RF, SP) with prospects, I don't care...
  21. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Apr 20, 2007 -> 03:53 AM) Nixon cost 3 million and will be hurt soon, as he always is every season. Hmm... sounds like somebody on the Sox. You sure you're not talking about Podsednik? At least he (Nixon) produces damn well when he's healthy. How many at-bats has he had not in the two spot in his career? Whatever the answer is, I know it's not nearly enough to make any conclusion from it. It's laughable that you're trying to base an argument off of it.
  22. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Apr 20, 2007 -> 04:11 AM) Scott Rolen Chipper Jones Eric Chávez Garrett Atkins Aramis Ramírez Glaus Rolen? Are you f***ing kidding? That's gotta be a joke. Chipper Jones? If you think that Crede's glove makes up for the .125 point difference in their OPS', that's your perrogative. I live in reality, though -- Jones is MUCH better. Eric Chavez? Funny. His two worst seasons (2005 and 2006) are just about as good as Crede's best season. And the gloves are the same. Atkins? I can see that, but if he repeats his 2006 season, Atkins is better. Ramirez? This ones closer, but I'd still take A-Ram. You're still talking about a .100 point difference in OPS between the two guys. Glaus? Same as A-Ram. I haven't seen one person actually put up a good argument for why Crede is better than these guys. Sort of same as the Guillen/Aderson arguments... people don't actually defend anthing, they just pull this red herring bulls*** arguments.
  23. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Apr 20, 2007 -> 04:32 AM) Whisler needs to improve that K rate of his. Nice 16-3 GO/FO ratio though...
  24. QUOTE(fathom @ Apr 20, 2007 -> 02:43 AM) what's the pitching match-up in Detroit? Danks vs Durbin tomorrow. Assuming Durbin is their five, that means we face Bonderman Saturday (vs Count) and I don't know who on Sunday.
