I think your Overbay option is interesting but I wonder if KW/Ozzie want an outfielder/DH. The key to my post was to re-evaluate the situation in March. The price of players will have gone down. KW/Ozzie will have a better read if Kotsay/Jones/Flowers can DH. I think more is riding on Rios, Konerko and Quentin to perform that who our DH is, unless our DH was a stud like Prince Fielder or Adrian Gonzalez, and we can all assume it's not going to be a stud.

I'm fine with the Jones/Kotsay platoon. I'd re-address the situation during Spring Training. Give them the opportunity to win it. If they suck in Spring Training then you sign someone off the scrap heap or you trade for someone. I think a Jones/Kotsay combination can hit .250 with .340 OBP 25HR and 85RBI. And that's about what you'd get from most of the remaining DH's available. IMO

The three reasons I think we picked up Rios: 1. Dewaye Wise 2. Nick Swisher 3. Brian Anderson Now we know who our center fielder is the next 5 years. There is question as to whether he will succeed but the same question lies with everyone else on the field. Rios is above average defensively and above average offensively.

I think the Sox are just more financially responsible. If you think at all the money that is thrown around, what percentage of contracts actually end up favoring the team and not the player: Chan Ho Park Darren Dreifort Kevin Brown Mike Hampton Denny Neagle Barry Zito Javier Vazquez (when he signed with NYY) Carl Pavano Bobby Higginson Magglio Ordonez (he was good but isn't worth what he's making now) This is just to name a few. I'm glad we don't get into the bidding wars and end up with a contract that limits our flexibility long term. Also, spending money doesn't guarantee you to win anything. Just look at the Yankees. Top payroll in baseball for I don't know how long and they won their first world series in like 5 years. Our payroll in 2005 was in the $70's and we won it all. We have since spent more money and we've been under .500 twice.

I posted on thesportingnews.com yesterday that I think Hoyer should try and extend Gonzalez. Accelerate his salary. Instead of $5M the next couple years he gets 2010 $15M 2011 $15M 2012 $20M 2013 $20M 2014 $25M He's a franchise player and those don't come around that often. You would strengthen your fan base too. SD fans probably hate the thought of trading him even if it means good players in return. If Hoyer does trade him I would ask for Lester and Buckholz. They want one of my best young players? They have to give me one of theirs.
