3/4 GAME THREAD: Spring Training Game ONE

QUOTE (jphat007 @ Mar 4, 2010 -> 06:38 PM) MLBTV! Can't wait! I love beisbol Is it on mlb.tv? I know it's on mlb network delayed. -
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Mar 3, 2010 -> 07:55 PM) "Fight" is the wrong word but back in 2008 he declined the White Sox 1 year offer while 21 or so other guys accepted, it just meant the Sox would tender him a deal a few days later. He called it posturing for future contracts, Jeff Berry was of the belief that if he declined the initial offer it would help Josh in arbitration some 3 years down the road. The thing is, the player has no real say in the matter, if the Sox want to tender him a contract he has to accept it by a certain deadline and he eventually did. It was a bigger story at the time than it should have been, in the end it truly meant nothing but it's the sort of oddity that I've only seen out of Jeff Berry, I believe he did the same thing with Buehrle. Interesting. Never heard of someone doing that.

The 2010 DH Slot -- What it is, what it isn't
striker replied to CyAcosta41's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Welcome aboard! I personally don't have any problem with Ozzie's approach with DH. I agree that this approach should help with our players second half performances, which was the problem last year not talent. And if this approach doesn't work I'm sure KW will do something to fix it. -
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Mar 3, 2010 -> 06:59 PM) It's the rest of the 40 man roster, those who are still in their pre-arb years. According to Cowley they were all signed, that's 18 players. It's basically a formality though Josh Fields seemed to enjoy fighting it even though he had no real power. What did Fields do to fight it?

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Mar 2, 2010 -> 09:00 PM) So is the game at half-time or what? No updates in the past 40 minutes..... They must be in like what, the 8th inning by now? They probably put their phones down and picked up a beer instead.

Everyone says Coop fixed them, or Coop can fix them. All I asked is what did he do to fix them? I'll drop it though.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Mar 2, 2010 -> 05:54 PM) Fixed Thornton in ONE side sessions, something that seasoned pitching coaches have never been able to do. Slowed down his delivery and corrected all ancillary movement in his wind. Thornton credits Cooper with allowing him to be as dominant as he is today. I gave Cooper credit for Thornton. It's been documented that he made changes in his delivery. I haven't seen any documented changes for any of the other mentioned players though.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Mar 2, 2010 -> 05:53 PM) Moving him to the pen, cleaning up his mechanics, teaching him how to control more than just 2 pitches. Taught him basic fundamentals of attacking hitters instead of throwing just where you can throw. He has reduced his walks and increased his control. He has learned to use a sinker instead of sitting on his 4-seamer. Is this all just assumed by you or are these referenced facts? I'm not trying to stir crap with people either, I am genuinely curious.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 2, 2010 -> 05:51 PM) Then what exactly would the criteria be for a good pitching coach??? The White Sox have pretty much always had good pitching under Cooper. I can't say what he does to be a good pitching coach but I know he gets good results. What would be the criteria for giving a pitching coach credit for fixing someone?
-
QUOTE (Reddy @ Mar 2, 2010 -> 04:44 PM) are you insane? Successes: Thornton Hermanson Floyd Contreras (s*** before coop) Loaiza (s*** before AND after coop) Jenks (s*** before coop) how can you say he wasn't successful with those last three?? Can you tell me what Cooper did to fix these players?
-
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Mar 2, 2010 -> 05:43 PM) Then don't list them as "failures". This all started because you chose to do so. The point I think you were trying to make became lost when you tried to point to certain pitchers who have succeeded here as evidence of Don Cooper's "failures", which is just absurd. Agreed. I also admitted that their lack of success had nothing to do with Cooper. Now can anyone argue how Cooper fixed Contreras, Jenks, Floyd, or Hermanson? No.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Mar 2, 2010 -> 05:35 PM) Jenks regressing? To what exactly? 05 2.75 1.25 06 4.00 1.39 07 2.77 0.89 08 2.63 1.10 09 3.71 1.27 Where is the regression? And who fell apart? The flash in the pans that had career years with Coop as their coach? Contreras's age caught up with him, but was one of the more dominant arms in the bigs when he was healthy with the Sox. Cotts and Polite arent even pitching anymore. Your arguments are terrible and I suggest you give up that opinion. If you are arguing that he did fix them then tell me how he fixed them. Fill in this blank. Coop fixed Jenks by _______.
-
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Mar 2, 2010 -> 05:33 PM) So it's Cooper's fault that Jenks can't control how many double cheeseburgers he eats at McDonalds? It's not Coopers fault for any of these pitchers downfalls, nor do I think he should get credit for fixing them because they succeeded. Does anyone actually get my point?
-
Everyone is overreacting. I think Cooper is a good pitching coach. My argument is that Cooper shouldn't get credit for "fixing" people just because they played better for the White Sox than other teams. I'm more than happy to hear your argument about how Cooper fixed Jenks, Cotts, Contreras, Hermanson, Floyd, Loaiza. I actually heard how Cooper worked with Thornton on his delivery, so I'll give him credit for Thornton. Now let me hear what he did for the others....
-
QUOTE (Reddy @ Mar 2, 2010 -> 04:44 PM) are you insane? Successes: Thornton Hermanson Floyd Contreras (s*** before coop) Loaiza (s*** before AND after coop) Jenks (s*** before coop) how can you say he wasn't successful with those last three?? Why does Coop deserve the credit for changing them? They were all crap before Ozzie managed them too. Maybe Ozzie fixed them?
-
QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Mar 2, 2010 -> 04:42 PM) I don't think you get to count Jenks and Cotts and Contreras (and Politte) as "failures". You've got to put Jenks and Contreras on the other side, and just leave Cotts and Politte off entirely. Contreras never had a season approaching what he had under Coop when he was with the Yankees. That said, I do agree with your overall point. Coop is not magic. I counted them as failures because of how they fell apart. The word "failures" probably isn't the best word to use in this case, but they certainly did not maintain their success.
-
QUOTE (He_Gawn @ Mar 2, 2010 -> 04:42 PM) Seriously? Cotts, Jenks, Polite, and Contreras had arguably their greatest years of their career with Cooper. Agreed but they all also fell apart, Jenks regressing.
-
QUOTE (BFirebird @ Mar 2, 2010 -> 04:29 PM) I am interested to see if Coop can get through to Cabrera and make him more than just a thrower. He has done a great job with other reclamation projects and at least this one isn't as dire as Floyd was when he was on his last option. I have to disagree with you that he has done a great job with other reclamation projects. I think he has had more failures than successes. Successes: Thornton Failures: Linebrink Jenks (keeps regressing) Aardsma Sisco Cotts MacDougal Masset Polite Contreras I'm not blaming him for the failures as much as showing you that his ability to "fix" people is overblown.

QUOTE (Springfield SoxFan @ Feb 27, 2010 -> 05:35 PM) Ellsbury is close to arbitration and I'm not sure the Padres want to take on that nightmare with Boras as his agent. Padres could flip Ellsbury to another team and get even more prospects.
-
http://www.fan-exchange.com/mlb/teamhittin...amp;yearid=2010 I have Teahen batting 2nd and Jones last. Ozzie will probably disagree.
-
Stand pat. Baseball is a game of two halves, the first half you see what sticks to the wall, the second half you fill in gaps. If we have $6M to spend now then I imagine we could get a good bat at the trade deadline. I bet Jones could bat .250 hit 30hr and drive in 80.

Interesting quote from KW via Cowley: Shows you the GMs to bite on the rumors that are probably manufactured by Boras.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Feb 19, 2010 -> 11:18 PM) Anyone else find it i interesting that KW threw out a timetable of 24 hours for Damon to change his mind? Maybe he wanted to leak his offer to get a decision made.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Feb 19, 2010 -> 11:18 PM) Anyone else find it i interesting that KW threw out a timetable of 24 hours for Damon to change his mind? It doesn't make sense. It's like he's showing his cards and making them show theirs.
