QUOTE(Brian @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 10:47 PM) But he deserves a pass cus he has a bad back, remember? I guess herniated discs are nothing more than a minor inconvenience.

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 10:03 PM) No....but this s*** has been going on for nearly 3 weeks now. The team has displayed just terrible fundamentals. How many base running errors and stupid infield gaffes can we have? If Ozzie is going to get ALL the credit for when we play well, he deserves to get blamed for when this team looks like a bunch of little leaguers. I think it's pretty hard to go 162 games without having stretches like this. For one thing it would be nice if we could get our 'A' team on the field. Health or lack or it is responsible for some of the calamities. I don't even like to get out of bed when my back is bothering me. I find that the amount of crap that Ozzie takes on this site is unreasonable.

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 10:00 PM) Where's all those people saying how great of a manager we have? I guess he should have been chasing Paul around 1st, kicking his ass!

QUOTE(quickman @ Aug 13, 2005 -> 10:56 PM) Ottawa, if your concerned about mcarthy's fastball what do you think about Broadways 90 mile an hour fastball? I hope he actaully gets more giddie up and soon. Totally agree. But I do so, sheepishly. There is so much more to being effective. What does Zito top out at? Have I also heard that Broadway also has an A+ curve. Still for every Zito, there are a dozen Munoz(s). And I don't know much about Broadway's eventual growth projection. You would think in general that a mid 20s year old man could bring a little better than his own college draftee counterpart. There would certainly be a much greater margin of error if Broadway or McCarthy could eventually grow into the mid-90s.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 13, 2005 -> 10:29 PM) He may be, and I hope you are right. I just think quickman is right. Hope this guy is a #4-5 guy, and if he is more than that its a bonus. We have been burned the last 12 years or so waiting for these guys to be anything more than that. Based on the Sox recent lack of success with pitchers, I understand your pessimism. I'm old enough to remember that drafting pitchers and developing them was the only thing they did right. Hopefully they have been more unlucky than anything. I am going to cling to the hope that he will be more than a #4-5. He is still rail thin and it wouldn't be a huge surprise if he adds a few pounds and a couple of miles per hour. Not that velocity is the be all end all. But it would be nice if his repertoire included 95 instead of 92 for a fastball. After that I think he has shown nothing but glimpses of plus major league pitches - curveball and change up. Shouldn't be all that hard for him to add a wrinkle to his fastball - like a cutter. His attitude and poise are pluses. His location and feel for pitching, likewise, seem to belie his age. For now I think #4-5 is shooting too low. Picking those numbers is arbitrarily leaning on the overall lack of success of recent pitching hopefuls. They have nothing to do with Brandon.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 13, 2005 -> 10:16 PM) Rauch didn't walk that many. 16 in 57innings at Bristol in 1999. 33 in 110 innings at Winston Salem in 2000 and 16 in 56 innings at Birminham in 2000. McCarthy is striking guys out in the minors that he didn't in the majors on pitches just off the plate. Then he grooves one and its gone. He has been much better recently at Charlotte, and whatever he is doing now, hopefully he can do on the major league level his next opportunity. McCarthy has rediscovered his preferred 12/6 arm slot. His pitches were a little flat for his ineffective starts. His recent performances are much more indicative of his abilities. I still think he will be a very effective pitcher when all is said and done. His spring training was not a fluke. He was dominant. When he is more over the top, his pitches are much harder to pick up. 12/6 augments his height.

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 13, 2005 -> 09:29 PM) Well, everyone knows I disagree. It's for that reason that I made a promise last night that I won't post in the gamethread if the Sox make the playoffs. I'd rather just sit back and enjoy making the playoffs instead of criticizing every important move that's made. The Sox gameday managerial moves are sure to be criticized on this site, no matter who makes them or what the outcome. The thing I like about Ozzie is the attitude that he will instill in his team. To me, he seems a great choice to prevent them from beig too tight or being too fatalistic. He believes in them and they see that. For starters, just imagine the camera panning to Ozzie in the dugout and he has a somnambulistic, bored look - it doesn't fit. Yet I could imagine several other managers being caught like this (cough cough - think of the lesser Chicago team for starters).

QUOTE(JimH @ Aug 13, 2005 -> 09:22 PM) Right. Get the job done, we can guess if he's gotten the job done but we don't know for sure. They are not looking good though. That is not a secret. It will all come down to who heats up before the playoffs. I don't see many personnel moves coming for any of the contenders. The Sox look a little lethargic at the moment. Lot's of time left to get hot and have others go into a funk. Hopefully the Sox can clinch early enough to rest the right people for the playoffs. Despite all the Ozzie bashing on this site, I think he is the right guy to take this team into the playoffs.

My 2 cents worth on Garland's game tonight - his sinker didn't have enough sink. Being the classic sinker pitcher, he is most effective when he is a little tired. He looked too strong tonight. I can't remember when his last start was, but I would bet he has had an extra day in between starts. In Boston, he needs ground balls. On the first home run, all of his pitches were close to a foot above AJ's target. I wish I had a good excuse for Mark's lack of success yesterday.

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 2, 2005 -> 09:23 PM) Well, I'll agree to disagree then. He has nothing on his pitches, and is lucky to have only given up 6 runs so far. As Hawk said, he hasn't been pitching inside enough tonight, and Jays are just leaning out and launching against him. I'll agree on his lack of pitches inside. But they have hit many pitches hard that appear to have good movement. As you said, though, it doesn't matter if the pitches move if they are comfortably diving out at them.

I don't think he has looked all that bad. It's like the Jays are seeing the ball real well and maybe guessing right at times. Still lots of baseball left.

QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 01:48 PM) Thanks. What I don't understand is why more people don't realize it's simply venting in the gamethread. If you go and look at any gamethread for any team, there's so many highs and lows during the game. It's so easy to overreact. Very true. I think my problem with the overreacting concerns a lifelong struggle to not overreact. The hope is that 'sober, second thoughts' will result in a personal maturation or growing up. My natural instinct is to be emotional and therefore I find myself internally cursing like all the overreactors. But a part of me believes there is folly in such behaviour and I don't want anyone else to be subjected to the negativism. I am in my 50s now and will probably still be trying to grow up in my 80s......if I ever get there. Maybe all I need is the same thing as everyone else around here - a White Sox championship. :banghead

QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 01:44 PM) Not to give anyone a heart attack, but Vizquel isn't in the Giants lineup today. Very interesting. By the way, I second that 'out of the gameday thread' comment.

QUOTE(osxfreak @ Jul 30, 2005 -> 02:35 PM) OK if it were me I'd be tossing every f***ING thing in the Dug out on the field hoping that I hit JOSE int he friggin head.... OZZIE is not loking happy.. wonder why he's leaving him in after that last walk.. obviously he is no good today. Not necessarily. This is typical Contreras. His problems are mental. He might become Cy Young for the next few innings until he gets to 110 pitches.

QUOTE(Pasqua's Mailman @ Jul 22, 2005 -> 09:25 PM) Cora probably had it in his mind that he was going to send Konerko before hand and did so.... Again, Timo Perez is a marginal back-up outfielder... if it was Rowand or AJ on deck I would be scream at the TV but it was Timo... I can't honestly blame him. The thing is, if you are Ramirez, you know you do not have to panic and hurry your throw. Just play pitch and catch.

QUOTE(Sox Hustler @ Jul 22, 2005 -> 08:57 PM) 8-6 now still Det, Castro with a bases clearing double. Now it's the bottom of the 6th and Detroit has the base loaded with nobody out. Hea Hea.

QUOTE(CYGarland @ Jul 22, 2005 -> 08:50 PM) The only way we are going to score against Wakefield is via the HR. Hpefully Rowand, PK, Crede or Uribe can connect on a few At least 5 of our hitters should be able to run at will if they can ever get on base - pitchout not withstanding.

At least Detroit is making life difficult for Minnesota. 7-3 Detroit in the 5th, man on second , nobody out.

GAME THREAD 7-19-05 SOX vs Tigers
ottawa_sox replied to Controlled Chaos's topic in 2005 Season in Review
QUOTE(jphat007 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 10:21 PM) Well then you are thinking about what you've heard in the media and in past years rather than what is going on in real likfe this year. Jose has crushed Schmidt this year performance wise. Schmidt's struggles earlier in the year don't mean much if he has got his act together now. Over the last few years he has been a star. Contreras has always had trouble putting 2 decent games together. If Sabean realized that his team isn't going anywhere, the Sox would be smart to take a chance on adding such a dominant force.
