Whether his arm or his back is not 100%, I agree with the notion that he needs to get it fixed. I don't think it matters how much control he has over his splitter or whatever pitch he offers, he needs to be able to greatly improve on 86 MPH. Otherwise we are going to have to get used to the opposition fighting off lots of pitches before they can handle something. Like your proverbial 10 pitch at bat ending in a hit. I certainly think something physical is going on. Hopefully some rest or rehab will take care of it. I would be the last guy to get on hermanson's case about this. I think he has a great mental makeup for the job and will continue to be unfazed by whatever is going on. Here's to getting back on track Hermy!

QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 12, 2005 -> 12:53 AM) Hermanson always seems to throw that little cutter/slider to try and get ahead of the count on hitters. I can probably count on one hand the number of times he's actually thrown a fastball past a hitter this year. I hear ya. But back to the original point - don't you think that he has been showing a loss in velocity? And does this loss not coincide with his sudden loss of effectiveness during his last 8, or so, appearances?
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 12, 2005 -> 12:42 AM) No, he's been topping out at about 89 mph all season. But it hasn't been his fastball which made him successful, it was his ability to get ahead in the count against the hitter, and then throw his splitter. It could be a matter of splitting hairs here. And these guns give different readings. But the loss of 3 or perhaps 5 MPH can be critical. His out pitch has been the splitter, but the threat of his fastball sets it up. The threat doesn't seem to be there at the moment. The baseball world seems to be catching up to him, in general. I think this is going to provide further impetus for Kenny to go after another reliever.

QUOTE(whitesox91403 @ Jun 12, 2005 -> 12:34 AM) Are you guys serious? He has now blown 1 save. 1 save and this stuff is being posted. My God people. Well the original question was about his velocity. He seems to top out at 86. Didn't he throw harder earlier in the year when he was more dominant? I'm not sure what his maximum velocity was earlier, but I thught he was reaching the 90s.

QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jun 10, 2005 -> 07:56 PM) Yep, the problem is that we need someone who can play 1st and 3rd base. Norton can play both positions but he is a butcher at 3rd. I wouldn't trust Burke there either. Maybe a trade is coming? He's no Mike Squires on first either. When Charlotte came to Ottawa, I saw him screw up 2 tailor made double plays as the first baseman with his slow release, 'chicken wing' delivery. -

QUOTE(knightni @ Jun 11, 2005 -> 12:36 AM) Hermy seems to be a little more hittable lately. Maybe Cotts could get a save opporunity down the line...? They said on the radio that his first pitch was a fastball that registered 86 mph. Hopefully he is not hurt. Maybe he is going through a slight dead arm stage. -

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jun 11, 2005 -> 12:09 AM) Yikes, it's hard to not want to send Cotts back out there after the way he's been pitching. But I guess we should put our closer in there, right? Klesko and Giles are lefties. But with Marte hurt, Ozzie may not want to tax Cotts. -

1960. My Dad hated the Yankees. I remember him teaching me cribbage at a cottage in Northern Ontario in the summer. I was not quite 9 years old. I couldn't get over how we were listening to a Yankee - White Sox game so far from civilization, in the middle of nowhere. The broadcast was surprisingly strong. It faded in and out a little, but that just seemed to add to the mystic. Shortly after that I watched Early Wynn pitch a game against the Indians. I watched it in my grand-father's basement. I couldn't get over how much Early could make the ball move all over the place. I remember somebody suggestiong I go outside and play, but I was mesmerized and absolutely refused.

QUOTE(ScottPodRulez22 @ Jun 8, 2005 -> 11:50 PM) Hawk is silent for some reason Christ I hope his eye didn't fall out with all the excitement. If the Twins and the Sox are from the wimpy American Central and they are both winning by 7 runs, what does that make the Natioanl West?

QUOTE(chisoxfan79 @ Jun 8, 2005 -> 11:16 PM) Well look at that our two bench players looking foolish. Two guys coming together like that - you can usually point to the pitcher as the culprit.

QUOTE(I-HATE-CREDE @ Jun 8, 2005 -> 10:15 PM) The word reactionary means conservative, not "quick to react". True enough. At least my intention was understood, although poorly worded. I am now a more enlightened man.

QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 8, 2005 -> 10:11 PM) Remember when Konerko used to go the opposite way to hit a liner? If this is the way he's going to continue to swing for his career, I hope that we don't even consider resigning him. Earlier in the game, according to Farmio, he got a pitch on the outside corner and tried hitting it to right, but was a little late. On this out, Farmer said he got his pitch - just happened to hit it on the ground. Gameday showed the pitch as being center cut, so pulling it, for Konerko, seems like a reaonable approach.

QUOTE(JimH @ Jun 8, 2005 -> 09:59 PM) Your first post? Geezus. Even though no one seems to be listening to you, don't stop. Kinda like a lone voice of reason in a sea of knee-jerk, reactionary insanity. Some of these guys that are having a bad time tonight, like Ozuna and Hernandez - they play baseball for the Chicago White Sox.

QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 8, 2005 -> 08:04 PM) Everett playing in that spacious outfield scares the crap out of me. Why does it seem like Ozzie is making Pods into a platoon player? We didn't trade a marquee power hitter to get a player who only starts against righties. I don't think Carl's defense is as bad as people on these boards make it out to be. And this way Ozzie gets to play the righty, lefty matchups better. Like all managers. And I like the idea of having Pods available as a pinch runner late in the game in case it's real close and we want a stolen base. And for all the stat heads, there is the fact that so far this year, Everett's average is quite good against lefties.
