Grief over celebrity deaths
Walter Payton dying hit me really hard. I imagine Michael Jordan dying will be pretty bad.

2009 Cubs thread
QUOTE (dpd9189 @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 10:15 PM) Just heard that the Cubs (before tonight's game) were the same amount of games out of first that they were when Aram went down. That's an epic fail by the Brewers and Cards not to capitalize on that and put more games between them and the Cubs in 2 months time. The division flat sucks. But it's not like the Cubs are the only team that's had injuries/ect to deal with. Ludwick/Ankiel/Carpenter/Lohse/Greene have all either spent time or are currently on the DL. The Brewers have been without Richie Weeks and Manny Parra (I can't remember if Parra got hurt or if he was sent down). I expect it to come down to the Cubs/Cardinals (although if the Brewers somehow upgrade their rotation that changes things). The more I think about it, though, who cares if the Cubs win the division? They matchup terribly with the Dodgers, Phillies or a healthy Mets squad. You think they want to see the Giants in a short series? The way they've struggled against quality RH pitching in the playoffs the last two years? I think not.

Joyce Dewitt (aka Janet from Three's company)
QUOTE (knightni @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 09:58 PM) Hello! She's aged 30 years since "Three's Company", J4L. I know, I know. But Suzanne Somers looks pretty damn good at her super advanced age. I'm sorry. That pic just scared me when I came across it.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 07:43 PM) Having Viciedo under our control for 6 years makes that contract a lot let stressful...he might not turn out to be Miguel Cabrera, but he seems to be a run producer...and the power was never a question about him until he started playing in BIRM. Sure, an 800 OPS instead of around 650+ would be much nicer, but if you bring in enough guys like Mitchell, Danks, Viciedo and A. Chapman, some of them will end up being All-Stars eventually. ?

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 06:51 PM) Also sounds like they might sign Pedro in the next week. I can't wait to see Ibanez return for the Phillies and hopefully get Rollins going, as that lineup is insane. It's been a long time since I honestly thought the best offensive team in baseball was from the NL.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 06:22 PM) Supposedly Brewers would have parted with C. Hart for Vazquez. I really don't think Braves should be sellers though, as they have a chance to be something when they get healthy . I'd love that for the Brewers.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 06:16 PM) I agree, I think Danks is severely overrated on this site (and I'm probably the only person disappointed in Viciedo's season so far this year). I think Flowers can be a Mike Napoli type catcher for the Sox. BTW, has anyone seen what teams are possibly willing to offer for Javy in a trade now? KW better pray that Flowers pans out. Flowers prospect status 100% hinges on him sticking at catcher. And what are teams offering for Javy? I must admit he's having a f***ing outstanding season. I knew he'd be a lot better in that park and that league. But if he had a few more wins, he might be a legitimate CY candidate.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 06:12 PM) The failure of some guys doesn't mean that Beckham and Viciedo and Allen and Poreda and Richard are going to fail as well. I understand that. I'm not trying to say because most have failed that our current crop will fail. But I think we're overrating a few of these guys (especially Danks and Flowers).

QUOTE (SoxFanForever @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 06:05 PM) Great post. I can't think of any top stud super prospect the Sox have traded away in the last 5 years that has turned into anything we miss. I think we're latching on to some of these guys a little too tightly (is that a word?) due to the fact our farm has been so horrendous most of this decade. I mean it was just 2-3 years ago our top prospects were Lance Broadway, Kyle McCulloch, Charles Haeger, Ryan Sweeney, Jerry Owens, Robert Valdio and Ray Liotta.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 05:59 PM) I would give up Richard and Poreda combined, or something along those lines. For a guy Halladay's age and only signed for 1.5 years I won't go beyond that. I'd only igve up 2 of the guys you list, and I wouldn't go for Beckham or Danks, and Flowers going would only happen on the condition that he's the only major piece from the top levels of the minors. If I had a scout or two saying there was some reason to undervalue one of those guys then that could change my thinking, but quite simply, even if all we get is an adequate back of the rotation starter from Richard, a very good bullpen part from Poreda, and average production from Allen, those 3 guys at minimal cost for 6+ years is worth a hell of a lot more than 1.5 years of Halladay unless you guarantee he wins you the world series this year, and no one can guarantee that. If the two best players in a package for Halladay you'd be willing to part with are Richard and Poreda then it's safe to say you're in the pass camp. Because the Blue Jays would point, laugh, give us the finger, ect, if we low-balled them with an offer like that. But I don't even believe he's available. So this is all moot.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 05:41 PM) Given the salary issues, yeah I might have a problem with that. We're going to really need someone at 1b in a year or two and Allen is on that path, and he's a lefty to boot, which will provide some balance in our lineup. I could live with it, if we thought Hudson would be ready to go next year, thus we'd still have another cheap starter, and we'd have some money to spend at 1b to fill that hole. I really don't like the idea of trading 3 guys for Halladay at his age and with his contract status; the odds are at least 1 of those 3 is going to wind up be really quite good, perhaps more than 1 of them, and that cheap pitcher/player/both could be really useful to us. So pretty much you're in the pass on Halladay camp. No problem. My problem is when I see something like "I'd love to get him as long as we don't have to give up Beckham, Danks, Allen, Hudson, Poreda, Flowers or basically anybody with a fraction of talent." lol.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 05:41 PM) Oh you are done? Sorry to waste your precious time on this Internet message board. I just saw that quote based on minorleaguebaseball.com. So he's not compared to big hurt; he's compared to Howard and McGriff. My bad. I don't know why everybody has to agree with everybody else, lest you are deemed a mental midget on message boards. I had heard somewhere Allen was supposed to be a f***ing stud and I know Poreda is good. I see you edited your post where you don't say you are done. Thanks for the edit. Yeah, I didn't want to come off as an ass. I still don't agree with your reasoning.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 05:35 PM) All I hear is Allen is the next big thing. Isn't he the next Big Hurt? Why can't we engineer a trade where we clearly win the trade once in a while? LMAO. I love you, man. Win a trade once in a while? You mean like the Danks trade? The Floyd trade? The Thornton trade? How about CQ? Jose Contreras for Loaiza? Did we not win that one?

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 05:29 PM) So is Big Hurt a masher. I was just asking a question of why is Hurt out of baseball and Thome still in? You can't tell me Hurt wouldn't hit 20-30 home runs if he played as much as Jimmy. Jimmy better heat up if he wants to hit 25-30 dingers this year. I said I like Thome, but he cannot run a lick. You got to admit he is probably the slowest man in baseball right now. I don't know why Thomas is out of baseball. Health? Money? Who knows. Has nothing to do with the fact Jim Thome is still one of the most productive DH's in the AL.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 05:27 PM) You guys are nuts. Isn't Allen supposed to be a total stud? Ditto Poreda? And many think Richard will be a big league starter. They won't want Fields. You've got to be creative. I don't know who to trade, but you can't put 3-4 top prospects together for a pitcher. A pitcher's arm can be f***ed at any time. You crack me up sometimes. You're honestly gonna tell me you would have a problem parting with Allen, Poreda and Richard for a pitcher the caliber of Roy Halladay because there's a chance his arm could fall off?

QUOTE (knightni @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 05:18 PM) I'm not interested in trading Flowers in a trade for Halladay. Allen, Poreda, Hudson, and Richard (Fields, Anderson). Fine. In my opinion, Beckham, Flowers and Viciedo are off-limits; for someone of Halladay's age. Beckham and Viciedo aren't going anywhere. Flowers is a different story, IMO. If he sticks at catcher, he's probably untouchable. If not, he's fair game.

Mark Buehrle selected to the All-Star Game
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 05:15 PM) Is Hamilton definitely out? That better be why Dye isn't on that list. The Sox brass, led by its owner, should personally call out baseball. Jerry needs to speak out and say the all star game is a sham w/out Dye even one of the five being on the fan vote. As far as Thome, why is it that Big Hurt is out of baseball and Thome is in baseball? Both men CANNOT run anymore. Big Jim can barely make it from first to third. He cannot make it from second to home on a hit anywhere, just like the Big Hurt. I love Jimmy, but what's the difference between him and Frank now? Neither can run. HE.IS.A.DH! Have you seen David Ortiz run? Have you seen Travis Hafner run? DH's get paid to mash. And Thome still mashes.

QUOTE (almagest @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 04:12 PM) What do you think is a fair deal on our part, and what do you think the Blue Jays would ask for? The Blue Jays don't give two s***s about how many years he has left on his contract or his age. He's one of the top 3 pitchers in baseball and has shown no signs at all of slowing down. They're not givin' him up for anything less than a knockout package. Think along the lines of what the Mariners gave up for Bedard. If no team is willing to pony up, he'll remain a Blue Jay. Simple as that. They're in no position to have to trade Halladay (unlike the Padres with Peavy).
