White Sox Winner
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 29, 2009 -> 09:54 PM) Floyd has the 5th best ERA in the bigs in MLB in June, 1.56. Ahead of him are: Beckett, Fernando Nieve (yes, THE Fernando Nieve), Kevin Millwood, and King Felix, who's put up a sparkling 0.94 ERA in June. (Edit; numbers probably not updated for tonight) Totally forgot about Felix. Jon Lester has been pretty damn dominating as well. But the point stands...Gavin has been simply magnificent since May 22nd.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 29, 2009 -> 08:54 PM) Getz and Beckham turned out to have the key insurance RBI's of the game, as it turned out. Don't think they would have scored 3 against BBBJ though. That Indians' line-up has so much talent, they outscore us by 1 RPG, it's a shame for their fans they don't have a better manager. By the way, how in God's name does Delmon Young have a 595 OPS??? Just wow. We can partially thank Bill Smith for our 2008 ALCD championship...that and holding onto Livan Hernandez too long over Liriano and getting NOTHING in return for the best pitcher in baseball, Johan Santana. Good luck finding a manager that could win with that rotation sans Cliff Lee.

Giants like Dye?
The Giants are oozing with impact prospects throughout their system. Unfortunately, I don't see any realistic matches. Let's just hope we're well within the playoff hunt come the trade deadline and this all becomes moot.

Dye named AL Co-Player of the Week
The best free agent signing in team history.

Has there been a better pitcher in baseball since May 22nd than Gavin Floyd? John Danks has been as close to unhittable as it gets his last 4 starts. Mark Buehrle is Mark Buehrle. I can't think of a better 3-some in the game right now than those three.

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Jun 29, 2009 -> 07:55 PM) Ozzie doesn't deserve any credit for that. Gavin has been cruising all game, at around 80 pitches, and has shown time and time again that he might the best pitcher in huge situations like that. No one should have even been up in the pen. (Not blasting Ozzie at all, just saying it really wasn't even a debate). Two walks and a single after two were out. I'm sure it crossed his mind.

Just want to say I like Ozzie letting Gavin try and pitch his way out of this. No matter what happens.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 29, 2009 -> 06:36 PM) Right now Rick Porcello is sitting on about 10 wins and has been key to the Tigers being in 1st. He could fall off in the 2nd half but he's the clear front runner. Been a really disappointing year for rookies in both leagues.

Gameday has Floyd's fastball at 93-94 MPH. For those watching on TV, how accurate is this?

Future makeup of starting rotation
QUOTE (chisoxfan09 @ Jun 29, 2009 -> 05:08 PM) Problem is Jordan if he stays this year no issues there as he will have by most accounts a very strong year. But if we buy him out for 2 million then he is free to go. I think based on his numbers he shold be a type B Free Agent. He still has another 2 years left in him. So we get the pick in the draft. Still not bad to restock the farm. I agree 100%. I'd rather just keep Dye and get the picks. His age and contract status makes him impossible to trade. And he's way too good to give up for just B or C prospects.

Future makeup of starting rotation
QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jun 29, 2009 -> 04:51 PM) The DBacks seem to be in unloading mode. If you really want to secure that 2010 rotation and beyond, go balls out and make Byrnes a deal he can't refuse for Haren. Say good bye to at least three of Beckham, Danks, Poreda, Allen, Hudson? I think Dan Haren is spectacular. But the price would be way too steep (as it should be for a pitcher of his caliber).

Future makeup of starting rotation
QUOTE (chisoxfan09 @ Jun 29, 2009 -> 04:55 PM) A little off topic but I gotta believe if we shop Dye we are bound to ask for a decent haul back. He projects to have 40HR/100RBI numbers this year and still has the 12 million option for next year which could be considered not terribly expensive for a great clubhouse guy, decent defrense, and the offense. My opinion only. I disagree. I don't see us getting any stud prospects for Dye. Very doubtful any team is going to pick up that 12 million dollar option. Especially in this economy. Look at what Dunn, Burrell and Abreu signed for.

Future makeup of starting rotation
QUOTE (chisoxfan09 @ Jun 29, 2009 -> 04:31 PM) Jordan, Bailey has had extremely disappointing MLB numbers. I wonder if we can get him cheap because of that but I doubt the would fit the mold of Ace type starter. Also he is only listed with 2 starts this year so he was hurt and on the DL for an extended period of time. His K/BB rate is horrible and his ERA is also sky high!! He looks like a big risk as a reclamation project for Coop. Not sure even if he is worth Dye straight up. I agree with you if we're just talking Bailey. Now I might've misread his post. I came away thinking he was talking about a deal involving Bailey and two of Stubbs, Frazier, Heisey and Cowart. That's just plain crazy.

Future makeup of starting rotation
QUOTE (beautox @ Jun 29, 2009 -> 11:52 AM) The only way we land an established ace is if we deplete our farm; and i would prefer we don't. I don't know which of CR/AP is going to stick in the rotation but im sure one will be able to handle the back end with the other making the transition into a Matt Thornton role, which will be great to continue to have young cheap talent to plug into this roster. Honestly I think in the very near future we're going to be selllers and that previously thought Homer for Dye trade goes down with one difference; we send dotel as well to the reds. The Reds need a RH bat and JD fits it to a T. They like most teams also need a bit of bullpen help; add to the fact Dotel is most likely going to be a type A free agent and you have the makings of what looks to be a good trade partner. Reds Get: Jermaine Dye Octavio Dotel Sox Get: Homer Bailey Zack Cozart or Todd Frazier Chris Heisey or Drew Stubbs I'm well aware of the sort of stigma the phrase "coop can fix him" brings to sox fans but there is a reason it gets said; if we want a future ACE we're going to have to draft and develop him or we're going to have to take on a reclamation project like homer. LOL. I like the way you think. But the Reds wouldn't even consider giving up anything close to that much for two guys on the wrong side of 30, who they'd only have control of for 2-3 months.

And this ballgame is OVA!
QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 29, 2009 -> 10:21 AM) He got Floyd for crap because Philly kind of gave up on Gavin. And I guess KW overwhelmed Texas in the Danks deal. Plus, I think the majority of the Sox fanbase disliked that deal as well at the time. I don't know if this applies to Danks, but I'm pretty sure Coop had a lot to do with Floyd being what he is today. And let's not forget that Buehrle might have swayed Danks in several ways in terms of working faster and using the cutter. I know all this. I was talking from the Cubs fans' point of view. But it's still hard for me to fathom that we got two studs who are under our control for the next 3-4 years after this one for a chronically injury-prone pitcher and a guy that's been washed up for about three years now.

Mark DeRosa Traded to the Cards
QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Jun 29, 2009 -> 08:48 AM) Can someone explain to me why so much press about Derosa getting traded? The guy has only played 140+ games twice in his career, never more than 87 rbi's, never hit 300... what is the fascination with him? Derosa is actually a pretty damn good player. His 3-year averages from 2006-2008 are .291/.368/.453/.820. He's sporting an .857 OPS in the last month or so after a slow start. He a little below average defensively at 3B while being a little above average in the OF. He makes a good team (by at least NL Central standards) a lot better.

Future makeup of starting rotation
QUOTE (chisoxfan09 @ Jun 29, 2009 -> 08:01 AM) I was looking at the current rotation this weekend and debating whether or not we are rebuilding, buying or selling, etc. But the more I looked at it the more I am convinced that the starting 5 rotation does not need too much tinkering but it would be nice to add either an Ace No 1 right handed pitcher or a very strong number 2. I posted previously in another thread the possiblities of looking at trades but the potential candidates are going to cost a ton of the few RH SP that are out and are tradable. I spoke about Brandon Webb but now he is out for the year. See my point for this post is this, we have 3 very and seemingly capable lefties in the mix and the rotation is stacked on the lefty side (Buerhle, Danks, Poerda, Richard) who are currently on the 25 man roster. The only true righty that is decent with experience is Gavin Floyd but I don't see him as an Ace or strong 2 but rather as a very nice middle rotation (No 3 or 4) SP. So the thinking is if we get a true Ace this winter to balance out the lefty side then man we are set for at least 3 more years as all our starters are under control for at least that long (End of 2012). Only Free Agent I see out there at the moment who make be available albeit with injury concern just coming off of shoulder surgery I think is Ben Sheets. When he is on his game he is a legit No 1 or Ace. SO this is the potential rotation for next year: 1. Ace Righty via trade or Free Agency (Who????) 2. Buerhle (Lefty) 3. Floyd (Righty) 4. Danks (Lefty) 5. Poreda/Richard (Lefty) Nice situation to have and we do have a couple of good righty prospects in the mix but they meay not be ready until 2011) - Hudson/Ely ** Sorry forgot to add Shirek as another strong righty candidate ** Any thoughts on this strategy for next year? Our SP may not actually be an area of weakness depending on what KW does before the trade deadline or in the winter. I pretty much agree with you. And I think KW does as well (as evidenced by the almost Jake Peavy acquisition). I don't want to see us making any move that involves any of our starting pitching prospects that doesn't net us a legitimate ace. Anything else would be foolish and not make a bit of sense.
