Sox Acquire Alomar for Lamura, Widger DFA'd
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 06:20 PM) Munoz probably has more trade value than Lamura, but this is a fair move. Lamura has a lot of work to do before he ever turns into a legit prospect. He does have a nice arm, but he's the exact type of guy you can move. He's a college reliever thats taken a while to develop. Do you know how old Lamura is?

Widger Reaction
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 06:09 PM) I believe it definitely is part of game preparation. Anyway, I just don't buy that excuse. I just think they don't want to come out and say the guy isn't that good.

Widger Reaction
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 06:07 PM) Actually, the Sox were quite livid at Widger's pitch selection several times last year. Especially with Jenks on the mound. He's never been known for his defense or his game-calling, and when it gets to the point where he can't hit anymore, he's pretty worthless. Last year he had been out of the game, so he may have appreciated it more. I think veterans that become back-ups tend to take shortcuts preparing to play. This may have happened to Widger, but either way, he really is most likely at the end of the road. Pitch selection isn't the same as calling out somebody's game preparation.

Widger Reaction
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 06:04 PM) I understand the move, of course. But that reasoning surprises me. Perhaps that explains why his CERA was so low last year, and so high this year. It would explain that particular trend. If he was indeed doing tons of extra work last year pre-game, and wasn't doing enough this year, then one has to ask... what would make that change? I almost wonder if there is something personal going on for Chris. But then, this is one of those things where we will likely never know the details. Either way, good luck Widge in your future endeavors. Yeah, I don't buy that explanation at all. Then again, I guess they wouldn't want to come out and just say he stinks. Which has been the case most of the year.

Sox Acquire Alomar for Lamura, Widger DFA'd
QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 05:58 PM) Widger is damn worthless and I couldn't stand when he played this year. How is Sandy any better? This would've been a good move in 1998.

Widger Reaction
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 05:59 PM) That tells me the staff wasn't very happy with the pre game work he did with the pitchers prior to starts, if not more. This sure wasn't the case last year. Everybody raved about his pre-game preparation last year. I guess a lot can change in a year.

Jon Garland, back to form?
Make that 6-0 with a 2.48 era in his last 7 starts. If you take out his June 24th start against the Astros, in which he gave up 5 ER in 5 IP, his numbers since June 13th look like this: 6-0, 1.67 era. I know you can't erase this start. It just makes his numbers a whole lot sexier when you do. Anyway, keep it goin, Jon. We're gonna need this from you the rest of the way if we're to get back to the postseason.

Ponson to Yanks
2.1 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 10.00 ERA Nice!

Thanks for '05, Chris. Your contributions to last year's championship will not be forgotten.

AND THATS A WHITE SOX WINNER!!!!
QUOTE(Soxpranos @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 03:27 PM) Finally back to back solid performances from our starters in a long time. Against a very potent offense. I really think this staff is finally gonna start to live up to the hype.

AND THATS A WHITE SOX WINNER!!!!
QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 03:29 PM) Ozzie just said that KW is looking at getting someone to help our offense, as well as a back-up catcher. From what he said, it sounds like we're close to making some trades. Really? That's strange that he would make that public.

AND THATS A WHITE SOX WINNER!!!!
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 03:26 PM) Jon really stepped up and made an ace type performance. This is the 2nd consecutive start in which he stopped a losing streak and now hopefully our staff has got some momentum on its side and we'll continue to see quality starts or better. The offense wasn't great, but it executed much better and got the clutch hits when it was needed. Definately a nice way to end this series and like I said, I'm getting very comfortable with this team and think its just a matter of time before it translates into a large streak of winning baseball. Other than two bad innings (Yes, I know they still count), the starting pitching has been very good the last 6 games. We just need to avoid (Javier especially) those 4 or 5 run innings that have been killing us.

AND THATS A WHITE SOX WINNER!!!!
Jon is pitching like he did the first half of last year. I knew he was gonna come around. Nice to see some efficient offense for a change.

Kenny better be bluffing...
QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 22, 2006 -> 04:04 PM) Sorry J4Life...I wasn't making the KW comment directly at you. I think that any team will listen to KW, especially since they see how desperate he might be right now. Well, if Kenny is willing to severely overpay, I could see something happening with an AL team.

Just hold them to 4 runs, Freddy. Please!

Kenny better be bluffing...
QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 22, 2006 -> 03:51 PM) I don't buy the non-AL factor at all. General Managers know that KW is very aggressive, and he's definitely not afraid to give up top prospects to get someone he wants. It amazes me that after 5 seasons, some people think that KW is honest with everything he says in the media. I didn't say I believed "everything" that comes out of his mouth in regards to trades. But c'mon, let's look at the AL as of right now. You can definitely cross off the Tigers, Twins, Indians, Yankees, Red Sox, Blue Jays, A's, Angels and probably the Rangers off the list of teams that would deal with us. That's leaves the D-rays, O's and KC as the 3 teams that might deal with us from the AL. We know how Tampa is when it comes to dealing their guys. The O's have spiff for pitching outside of Bedard. I'm sure he's not going anywhere. I'm not that familiar with their farm, though. And what would KC have that we would want? Edit: I forgot the Mariners.

Kenny better be bluffing...
QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Jul 22, 2006 -> 03:41 PM) God I hope you are wrong, but in all likelyhood you are correct. I'll say this much: If nothing does happen, it won't be because Kenny wasn't out there trying to make it happen. He's argubly the most aggressive, cut-throat GM in baseball. I believe Kenny 100% when he says no AL teams will deal with the White Sox. Why would they? And with the NL being so unbelievably garbage this year, just about every team has a legitimate shot at the playoffs outside of the Cubs, Pirates, Nationals, and Marlins.

Sox v. Rangers, Gamethread
QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 22, 2006 -> 03:42 PM) Tonight will be a very fun game! I'm glad I won't be around for this one. I've got a feeling this game thread is gonna go into severe meltdown.

Kenny better be bluffing...
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jul 22, 2006 -> 03:22 PM) I am almost dreading July 31st, because I have a strong feeling this site is going to be very let down by little to no activity by the Sox. Just a hunch.. I think you're right. I learned my lesson after last year's trade deadline. Although that Blum guy did help us out a little.

Are 5.5 games surmountable?
5.5 games is nowhere near insurmountable, especially when we still have 10 games left with the Tigers. I look at it like this: Every team, no matter how good, has atleast one stretch, if not more, where they just don't play good baseball. The Tigers haven't had that yet. Unless they end up winning 110+ games, they're due for a bad streak. We're playing our worst baseball of the season. I have to believe that we're gonna come out of it soon. This team is just too talented not to.

Series Preview: White Sox vs. Rangers
Aside from the post-season, of course, this might be the biggest start in Mark Buehrle's career. We need him to be Mark Buehrle again for so many reasons right now.

AND THAT'S A WHITE SOX LOSER
QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 07:55 PM) anyone think the Tigers will wiin 109 games, their current pace? No. They'll have a two week stretch at some point where they don't play good baseball. It's gonna happen. The only two teams I can think of that avoided any kind of real slump during the course of an entire season are the '98 Yankees and '01 Mariners. 95-100 wins is more realistic.
