  1. None of us will forget 2005, especially the WS. But, it looks like it's time to move on. Let's hope something good comes of freeing up the cash.
  2. QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 12:18 PM) Yeah, I think he'll hit 20-25 homers fairly easily. I really like the move - I think he is a perfect fit for us - but I understand I am in the large minority. I'm beginning to like the move more. I never thought it bad, but I wasn't thrilled with it at first. I like the fact that there's some money coming, and the news of buying out Dye leads me to believe that there are more moves in the making.

And a stainless toilet seat? Damn that'd be cold.

Wow. You can tell it's the off-season. To be honest, though, I voted.
  5. Unless the Sox sign someone who would strictly be a SS or 3B (like Beltre) I don't see Alexei or Beckham changing positions.
  6. I'm not blown away by the trade, but I'm not disappointed either. I do think that this is a move to make more moves. Only time will tell.
  7. I will be heading to Flossmoor Station on Saturday. This place is great as the food is superb, and they have a nice kids menu. So, I get to enjoy their wonderful beer, and the family enjoys themselves, too. Plus, the wife can drive us home...

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 4, 2009 -> 10:06 AM) Pssh. How can you guys sit through that horrible acting by the lead guy? It's like having to watch the Dark Knight with Christian Bale using his Batman voice for every scene, including his Bruce Wayne stuff. It's beyond awful. He makes everything so serious that it becomes a joke. Okay. I changed my mind. It's a terrible show.

    QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Nov 4, 2009 -> 09:31 AM) False. Agree. Flash Forward is a great show.
  10. Unfortunately, in these situations, we really don't have much else to go on except history. No one can see the future...although some people may think KW can with his bargain signing of Pods. Obviously, however, his gift faltered a bit with Rios, at least for the short term. Anyway, my pont is that history tells us that Pods will not put up good numbers next year. Whether or not that's true, I would suspect that most GMs will take that into consideration. So, that's an argument that says Pods may not get a lucrative two-year deal ($8-$10 million). With the recession and the fact that the likes of Damon and Abreu will be sought out lends to the argument that Pods will end up getting a deal...maybe two years. I see the Sox signing him for two years or one year with an option at $2-$4 million/year.
  11. I'm not as much as a Pods hater as others on this site, and I'm not against Damon coming to the Sox. I guess I'm just a warm and fuzzy guy. If you attach a price tage and look at only that, Pods would be the guy. I'm not sure Damon is a huge upgrade, but I do think he would be at least slightly better. So, unless the price tags are close, Pods would most likely be the one. But, in reality, I don't see Damon coming to the Sox, and I think this is nothing more than drunk speculation.
  12. Plus he can grow his long hair and facial hair again.
  13. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Oct 26, 2009 -> 11:00 AM) Sprecher's stuff is usually quality, i wish I got it down here. Saturday the wife and I split the highly-anticipated Sierra Estate Harvest Ale. It was very good, solidly west coast, very drinkable, but it wasn't life-changing. Fresh hop flavor and hop bitterness was front-and-center as expected, but surprisingly light on hop aroma. This being a beer to showcase fresh-from-the-vine hops (basically unheard of as hoops are usually dried before use), I expected sackloads of late-addition hops and a hop nose to knowck me off my feet. It wasn't there. As I said, a very good beer, and happy I had a chance to try it, but I was ready for a religious experience and it didn't happen. On the plus side, my beer merchant is blowing out the 24 oz bottles of the Sierra Southern Hemisphere Harverst Ale for $2.99 a bottle! Time to stock up on that one while there's some to be had. Are those beers from Sierra Nevada?
  14. QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 26, 2009 -> 10:00 AM) Innocent until proven guilty I agree, but the guy had a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit. They shouldn't be holding a benefit for this chump.
  15. Found another great beer that sits high on my list. Sprecher Black Bavarian. Absolutely delicious and easy to drink.
  16. I'm sure just about everyone knows someone or knows of a story where a cop (or a relative or friend of a cop) gets the attention when something like this happens. My sister was involved in a car accident years ago where the driver of the other car was stinking drunk. But, because he was the police chief's cousin, they didn't even do a breathalyzer. A few weeks later, he was at a function on crutches and all his buddies were feeling sorry for him. A friend of ours kicked his crutch out from under him. This deal with having a benefit for a cop who killed two people his horrible. And it's a shame that the good cops out there are sullied by these losers.
  17. Unless the Sox are in the playoffs, it's hard for me to care much.

QUOTE (Disco72 @ Oct 21, 2009 -> 04:01 PM) Thanks! Any thoughts on the neighborhoods around that area? Safe? Fun? I think the university is around the Mt. Vernon area, and the Aquarium is obviously Inner Harbor. I'm used to cities having lived in Chicago and Atlanta. Stay away from East Baltimore. That's where the container yards and bad neighborhoods are. Glen Burnie, where I lived, is south of the city. That's a decent area, much like the far southwestern suburbs of Chicago. To the west are some old but nice areas like Ellicott City. North of the city are the more expensive neighborhoods. Towson and Timonium I am familiar with. So, it depends on what you like. If you're looking for convienence of shopping, malls, etc. and the ease of going downtown, I would recommend the southern suburbs. If historical, older neighborhoods are your thing, go west (Ellicott City is very nice). And if ya got money, north is the place to be.

I lived right outside of Baltimore in Glen Burnie for about 2 years. I wish I could have been there longer. Baltimore is a great city with plenty to do. With a short stay with not much time to look around, I would check out the Inner Harbor and Fells Point. The Inner Harbor may be touristy, but I frequented it when I lived there because it's very easy to get in and out of downtown. Fells Point is close to the harbor and has tons of restaurants and bars. Also, there's the old police station where Homicide was filmed.

You could try some of these: "Your honor, two words: Come on!" "The radar gun must be broke. My car shimmies at 29.4." "The cop pulled me over on his bicycle, your honor." "I was running late for work, sir, and I mathematically figured I'd have to drive exactly 4.7 mph over the speed limit to make it on time." "30 is the new 25, your honor." "Good thing the cop didn't catch me earlier. I was actually slowing down from 74 mph."
  21. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 14, 2009 -> 03:40 PM) I have never heard of, nor seen this guy in anything. Seriously?

As far as events that have changed MY life, it's easy: No necessarily in any order 1. Birth of my first daughter 2. Birth of my son 3. Birth of my second daughter 4. Joining the USCG 5. Getting out of the CG I'd have to think about events that changed life as we know it. The one that really stands out is 9/11. If you really think about how much life has changed since then it's incredible. I barely remember what it was like to travel by plane before then.
  23. I think Chelios could end up playing for an NHL team, but I would imagine his ice time would be limited. He could very well skate circles around some guys in the AHL and maybe even some in the NHL. But at 47, one would think his endurance would be low. His desire to keep playing is not a surprise. Most hockey players have been playing since they were 5 years old. My son has been playing for 3 years, and I coached his teams for the first two. Even at that young an age, hockey gets into their blood. If they love the game, they are hooked. I for one would like to see a game at the Allstate with Chelios guarding the blue line.
  24. So Chris Chelios is planning on signing with the Chicago Wolves. He's 47 but is probably still tougher than some of the younger players. The speculation is that this will be his last go at it so that he can retire in Chicago, even if not with the Blackhawks. However, there is still a chance he can use his time with the Wolves as a showcase for NHL teams. Either way, it's pretty awesome that a legend...at least a Chicago hockey legend will be skating with the Wolves. I imagine ticket sales will jump. I grew up in Pittsburgh, so I didn't follow the Hawks like I do now. But, I would think this is huge for Chicago hockey fans.

QUOTE (NIUSox @ Oct 10, 2009 -> 01:23 AM) I've been on a reading spree recently. Instead of reading my books for class I've decided just to read alot of books although two are related to one of my classes. In the past 6 weeks I've read: The Know-It-All by AJ Jacobs The Audacity of Hope by Barack Obama The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown Just A Theory by Ken Miller Finding Darwin's God by Ken Miller Come to think of it, it is kinda an odd mismatch of books but they were all good. I just finished the last one tonight, not quite sure what to start next. My friend suggested "The Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follet has anyone read it? I read Pillars of the Earth for a class once. It's a huge book but worth the read.
