  1. QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Feb 17, 2008 -> 01:31 AM) that's just not right.
  2. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Feb 17, 2008 -> 06:32 PM) Didn't they project 72 wins and 4th place in 2005 as well? oh i know, i recognize they're fallible. but i also think they know generally what they're talking about. and i dont see our intangibles working for us this year like in 05
  3. doing April 12th v. Detroit and Sept. 8 vs. Toronto - i haven't gotten to see the big man since he left, and i've always wanted to.
  4. last year their projection was for... wait for it... 72-90 what was our record?
  5. if crede has some good games, the lowry thing will probably happen. i'm not thrilled about it - but you could get worse. Lowry's value has dropped and dropped and no one else besides us has shown any interest so... i say it'd probably happen.
  6. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 08:14 PM) Warning at my school now: Nothing's going to change in my life. I will still most likely sit at the front of the room during lectures and classes. I won't be looking over my shoulder. But this does scare me on a deep level. I just figure there's nothing I can do or not do, and if something happens it'll be something to deal with then and not before. My best regards and deepest sympathies for all at NIU. I contacted all three people I know there and fortunately they're okay. i worry about the same thing happening here at LUC. doubt it will... but... still scary nonetheless.
  7. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 03:05 PM) or idiot seeking bullets. see that's perfect! it's that kind of thinking that will make you rich someday.
  8. QUOTE(R.J. @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 01:15 PM) Oh sorry... Joe Crede ($5.1M), Juan Uribe($4.5M), and MikeMacDougal (2y/$4.6M) will be traded for Matt Cain. there ya go.
  9. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 01:16 PM) see, we're not all bad At church I'm the rebel who doesn't stop questioning old traditions, on soxtalk I'm the fundementalist. talk about perspective touche, salesman.
  10. QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 12:47 PM) That's sort of what i said way back on the first page. Bad parenting, violent tv, movies and games, no church, it all contributes. edit. Sorry, it was way back on the other thread before they separated. you know what... when i was younger i always avidly fought the idea that video games led to actual violence... but now, thinking about it, you have to admit there's a correlation. lately we've seen new horror movies coming out a couple times a month glorifying all this violence. it's halloween all year round. I mean, you think about the Saw series, and the draw is "oh my god how's he gonna kill them next? what kind of f*cked up, twisted thing will he think of next!!!? and we're sucked into it. We glorify these things. All in all, our culture truly is desensitizing kids to violence and that may very well play a role... in fact, probably a big one.
  11. QUOTE(Athomeboy_2000 @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 01:01 PM) This is great... i. hate. fox. news. lol it's getting to the point where it's just comical. i legitimately think that the Daily Show is probably now officially a better news source than Fox.
  12. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 12:40 PM) We have a desire and a longing to interact with community, yet we say "no way!" to the concept that sometimes it's better for the community to help shape ourselves over our own abilities to do so. In other words, the people you love and respect should have every right to call you out for the crazy things you do. a sub conversation I'd like to talk about is the role the church has played..or rather the lack of role the church has played over the past 50 years in setting the culture of community. Churches have allowed themselves to become little islands within their castle walls. What I would like to see is more churches tearing down their protective barriers and interacting with their neighbors in relevant ways and set an example of caring just to care about people; be vulnerable because that is how we learn and change....so that people can learn and change. anyway, another time. you know what, even though i've never been very religious i'd 100% agree with you on this. I think that it's exactly what you're talking about that put me off from the church to begin with. They preach one thing, this caring for others, etc. but i rarely see it in action. if they did what you suggest i think it'd be a much needed turnaround. this is odd... in one morning i've agreed with both Kap and PA... what's going on?
  13. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 12:04 PM) that's where people don't get it. Religion = Rules The Gospel = Freedom from those rules So, even though people seem incredibly "religious" they may not be any better off than an atheist in relation to their proximity to God. So yes, it is a God issue. from your perspective
  14. QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 11:54 AM) It's a social and cultural issue. Canada has more guns per capita but less crime. Guns are not the cause, they are a tool. People are the cause. Banning guns doesn't address the root issues of the problems. Britain banned guns, so knife crime increased. Now they want to ban knives. If people still want to hurt each other, they'll find a way, and then they'll try to ban that. but gun deaths are exceptionally lower in GB. and so knife crime could increase - you can't kill an auditorium of people with a knife.
  15. QUOTE(R.J. @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 11:36 AM) Both Joe Crede, Juan Uribe, and one of Floyd/MacDougal/Masset are traded, yielding a total of zero prospects who would be listed in a top 250 list. i thought we were looking for wild predictions
  16. QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 11:48 AM) Thats an impossible statistic to make. Not all crime statutes are the same in each state, not all gun laws are the same in each state. The facts I have seen suggest that those states with stricter CCW have seen a more drastic decline in violent crime (once again violent crime is a broad term this includes knife violence is my guess). The other fact I have seen is that, the US in comparison to other countries that do not allow the ownership of guns, has a higher rate of gun violence. http://www.enotes.com/can-gun-article Those numbers are staggering; US over 8,000 deaths per year to gun violence. Australia 65 per year Great Britain 52 per year Japan 22 per year Even if you multiply those deaths by 10x, its still so drastic to America's total that you just have to ask, are we really right? Either would I. But no one has ever shown a correlation between gun ownership and the decline of gun violence. http://www.enotes.com/can-gun-article wow. so what are they doing that we're not?
  17. QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 11:44 AM) If they have a candidate to rally AGAINST (Hillary), they will. maybe... but people are never as strong in their convictions when it's AGAINST something. People don't say they're Anti-Choice, they say they're Pro-Life. Say bible thumper X is against Hillary and doesn't really like McCain either. If they've got a busy schedule that day or they're not feeling well or whatever else, they're not going to go out and vote simply to vote AGAINST someone. People rally behind wanting to see their OWN agenda put in place, typically not for keeping another one out. but that said i could be completely wrong if Religious Right leaders really stand up and make waves about it and try and mobilize their constituency.
  18. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 11:31 AM) Right, exactly. I just said this in reply to strangesox. Hey, I think we all sort of agree on something. how crazy is that??? haha
  19. QUOTE(YASNY @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 11:38 AM) But why can't things like this be decided on the community level. If the community wants to have an invocation before a High School graduation, why should the fed be able to say no, that's not allowed? A pregame team prayer before a football game. Everyone wouldn't be forced to participate, if the chose not to. because it's disregarding the fact that there may be some individuals who dont believe in said prayer/invocation and they shouldn't be forced to either go through that or pretend they believe it to fit in.
  20. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 11:30 AM) It comes down to this. Would they rather have McCain or Hillary/Obama in the White House? i dont think thats true. the religious right, if they dont have a candidate to rally behind, just wont vote.
  21. QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 11:35 AM) I'm talking overall, not these major tragedy cases. Are gun crimes higher in places with CCW? but it's these major tragedies that we need to stop. Gun violence will never disappear - but we have to do something to stop these atrocities from occuring.
  22. QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 11:21 AM) But gun laws and banning guns doesn't increase safety. In places like Texas, where there are open and concealed carry laws, are there higher gun crime rates? Crazy wild-west like shootings at the bars or malls? People supporting gun bans always say that more guns= more violence, but reality doesn't bear that out. how are you so sure that laws dont increase safety??? get rid of them all and i betcha you'd see an increase in violence. and the other thing - if we make it extremely hard to get guns by banning them etc, you may not stop crime, but you'll definitely see this school violence drop drastically because these kids only have guns cuz they're EASY to get. Make it harder and they probably wont have the ability to commit the crime. They're not connected into the underground gun trafficking world quite yet...
  23. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 11:16 AM) The ability to fight fire with fire will not come close to offsetting the anti-Clinton vote that will mobilize on behalf of McCain if she gets the nomination. You say everybody already knows Bearing in mind that the Clinton s***, but it's not a question of what McCain could do with that. Keep in mind that 1/3 of the fractuous conservative base – the social conservatives and more specifically the Christian conservatives – are not too keen on the idea of a McCain presidency. The fact that this group turned out in droves to vote for GWB made the difference in the last two elections. If they sit 2008 out and the Dems turned out in the kind if numbers it appears they will, McCain loses by a lot in the general. But all of that potentially falls apart with a Clinton nomination, because the Clinton Penis will again become something the conservative Christians can turn out to vote against if the GOP media machine finds a way to pretend it is an issue. the religious right, if you ask me, is more likely than anything to just sit this one out - regardless of who the dem nom is. i dont know, i could be wrong and the GOP machine may very well do as you say - but i'm not sold on that happening. i dont know, i mean, more and more i am starting to come to the conclusion that Obama is the most electable... but man... i just cant stand the guy and dont want to see him on tv every effing day for the next 4 years.
  24. QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 11:10 AM) He seems to be doing quite well without needing to be an attack dog. And remind me how much of an attack dog McCain was in 2000 when he was being smeared. i'm talking in the general. not right now.
  25. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 11:11 AM) It's not, and I don't think he's trying to say that. But, I do think that people should be able to express their religious beliefs (God, Allah, whatever) in school or whereever they are, and not be pigeonholed and forced to shut up due to "separation of church and state". And this is true if they are not forcing their beliefs on someone. That's where it crosses the line and should not be allowed to occur. i actually agree with you on that - i just i don't think there should be organized prayer in school. It shouldn't be led by teachers or anything like that. And so, if it isn't led by teachers, then it's not an issue of whether God is in school or not, but whether God is in that individual kid's life. He or she will decide whether he/she wants to pray at school or whatever else and so thusly, it's actually all on the parents shoulders, not the schools.
