  1. QUOTE (Heartattack19 @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 02:55 PM) Rumor going around was that Karim Garcia sucker punched Foulke with something in his hand (brass knuckle like...). I thought he was wearing a ring? Maybe I imagined it. That was so long ago.
  2. 36 hours until Puig time, baby. Oooooooooohhhhhhh yeaaaaaaaaah
  3. I'd only use WAR to evaluate individuals (other than catchers). This thread is Hawk Harrelson approved.
  4. QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 17, 2013 -> 10:39 PM) The biggest work in progress IMO is evaluating catcher defense, though there are some really promising stats coming out in that regard too. The only issue is that they aren't being updated at the rate that other defensive statistics are (I don't believe any numbers for the most sophisticated catcher defense statistics are available yet for this season). Right. I don't even pay attention to catcher WAR. Ron Santo has a higher WAR (71) than any catcher in baseball history with the exception of Johnny Bench. Top 5 1. Johnny Bench 75 2. Pudge Rodriguez 70 3. Gary Carter 69 4. Carlton Fisk 69 5. Mike Piazza 64
  5. QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Jul 17, 2013 -> 08:01 PM) You know that Eminor is gonna blow a gasket if you keep quoting these primitive OBP and SLG numbers, correct? QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 17, 2013 -> 08:02 PM) You do read right? That post was in reply to another post which asked a question related to those numbers. That post was in reply to blah blah blah doooooooooonnnn't caaaaaaaaaaare As far as the Ellsbury vs Dunn OPS thing, it's my understanding that you never look at OPS for table-setters. Nobody ever judged Ichiro by OPS, correct? It's basically something you use to evaluate run-producers. Sometimes you get rare freaks that do both (Mike Trout, etc). But I generally agree with everything Eminor is saying in this thread. I love wOBA & wRC.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 17, 2013 -> 06:53 PM) But you aren't getting that from Adam Dunn except on a sample size basis. In 2.5 years here, he has a .316 OBP and a .407 SLG. Even throwing out '11, his best numbers are .333 OBP last year, and .474 SLG this year. You know that Eminor is gonna blow a gasket if you keep quoting these primitive OBP and SLG numbers, correct?
  7. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 16, 2013 -> 04:16 PM) With all of their injuries, I think they'd be better off paying less for two starters. They almost need quantity more than quality. Plus, their trade for a Cubs SP last season didn't go very well. Darvish and Ogando will be back within the next week. You get Garza or Peavy, and your playoff rotation is looking like this: 1. Darvish 2. Garza/Peavy 3. Holland 4. Ogando That works.
  8. QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 16, 2013 -> 04:02 PM) Yeah, Olt would be an overpay of grand proportions for a half season of Garza. Texas doesn't want to go out like the Buffalo Bills, so I'm guessing that they'll overpay for Garza or Peavy.
  9. Aside from Olt's crazy power potential, he's also posted a career minor league OBP of damn near .400. That's a guy I'll take a chance on, assuming that his vision issues aren't a long term concern.
  10. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 15, 2013 -> 08:16 PM) And yet Smardzija is claimed by some to be a low 1 high 2, and Santiago a middle reliever. I suspect that Santiago would give Edinson Volquez a run for his money in the BB/IP category if he ever became a regular starter.
  11. QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Jul 13, 2013 -> 02:11 PM) Samardzija is a sick talent. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 15, 2013 -> 01:47 PM) This is f***ing absurd. clearly extremely talented pitcher Okay, so you agree with me? Very bizarre, wite. Samardzija's stock has been skyrocketing over the past 12 months or thereabouts, and for good reason. He has the makings of a good #1 or an elite #2. That is very clear to people who follow baseball closely. The fact that he's a late bloomer means jack s***. And Vazquez could have been amazing if not for mental issues. I thought the sky was the limit back when he was with Montreal. You have to analyze these guys on a case-by-case basis. Samardzija may ultimately fail, but as of this moment, he's looking like a strong top-of-the-rotation starter.
  12. QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Jul 13, 2013 -> 02:11 PM) Samardzija is a sick talent. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 13, 2013 -> 02:28 PM) So were Wood and Prior. Pitching is fragile. And yeah, we all know Chris Sale could go down tomorrow. Or never. Yeah, this applies to everyone who has ever pitched. Some more than others. It's hardly a point worth making.
  13. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jul 13, 2013 -> 01:45 PM) Quintana's 24 y.o. has thrown 244 Major League innings, averages 6 Kp9 and has a 117+ ERA. You think that's a #4 starter? Let me reiterate that I'm talking about the long term. I don't care about Quintana's 2013 WAR.
  14. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 13, 2013 -> 02:02 PM) Also, what is Samardzija long-term? Samardzija is a sick talent. You can't see that? I mean, there's not much more to be said. Aside from overrating players on your own team & underrating the opposition, most people posting in this thread are putting a lot of weight into three months worth of stats. Don't do that. It's not a particularly wise thing to do. I like you, because you puff out your bird chest when you post.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 12, 2013 -> 11:53 PM) The 3-4 mph increase in his fastball year over year is a HUGE difference. Sitting 89 to 90 is vastly different than his 93-94 we see regularly this year. Quintana is typically at 91. Check fangraphs. But anyway, I said Quintana was a decent #4 starter in the long run, which is high enough praise for someone with his stuff, which is rated just fine. It's mediocre, but he gets the most out of his ability. Hector Santiago is not a starter in the long term, unless you like to see WHIP ratios in the 1.50 range. I'm sorry to have to break this stuff to you guys.
  16. Guys, don't comment on pitching anymore, haha.
  17. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 12, 2013 -> 08:26 PM) A "decent #4"? Jose Quintana has the 17th best ERA in the AL and has a better ERA than Justin Verlander in a much better hitter's park. That's great, but he's just not particularly talented. His stuff is very mediocre. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 12, 2013 -> 08:18 PM) Who is 4th amongst all MLB starters in K/9 ratio? Hector Santiago. You must not watch many White Sox games if you totally forgot about him. He's not cut out to be a long term starter. At least not a good one.
  18. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Jul 12, 2013 -> 03:26 PM) It is not about hating the cubs farm system. The argument is that the cubs are in better position because they have great 20 year old talent with no pitching prospects while the White Sox appear to have a nice young MLB producing rotation. Okay, so the Sox have a bona fide ace in Sale, and a decent #4 in Quintana. What else? Peavy ain't gonna be here in two years. Danks is damaged goods. The Cubs are in an infinitely better position to do damage between the years of 2015 and 2020. People who can't see that are either blindly hating because they've been programmed to despise all things Cub-related, or they don't know their baseball too well.
  19. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Jul 11, 2013 -> 04:36 AM) I like our position way better. You don't really believe that, do you? This team is gonna suck really hard for a very long time. Good thing we got the Blackhawks, Bears, Bulls, etc.
  20. I thought that maybe he was just busting my balls a few pages back, but now it's clear that something is horribly wrong. I almost feel bad for him.
  21. When did Balta hit his head? I don't recall you being this slow back when I used to post here regularly. It's a fascinating development.
  22. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 06:41 PM) Except for being in the same division with the best organization in baseball right now, as well as the Reds and the Pirates on the rise and having the same number of prospects, but many of them on the pitching side. Maybe you can finish ahead of the Brewers, but that's kind of a given without Braun and with Gallardo probably being traded. You're making too big of a leap here. I don't know what the Pirates, Reds, or Cardinals will be doing come 2015/2016. Let's stick to the current discussion where people are acting like having too many quality prospects is a bad thing.
  23. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 06:58 PM) Just look at how excited the people here are about where their lineup will be in 5 years when all the guys sitting down in A ball reach the big leagues like they're guaranteed to do. Quote the post where someone guaranteed that all of their blue chip prospects would reach the majors. And it's not a bad thing to have a s***load of quality prospects. When the time comes, I'm sure that they'll flip quite a few of them for proven major league assets. There is nothing to be pessimistic about.
  24. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 03:57 AM) The Shield is better than The Wire. The Shield is in my personal top 5, but hell no. You're in the vast minority with that opinion.
