  1. QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Aug 7, 2012 -> 04:07 PM) I would be fine with Morel if healthy enough to bring that defense. Morel, Beckham, Ramirez, and Viciedo in the same lineup - sounds like must-watch TV! Kenny is not that incompetent. He'll find a way to bring back Youk.
  2. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Aug 2, 2012 -> 07:52 PM) The guy who was afraid to trade prospects when it could have put his teams over the top? The Sox were legitimate world series contenders at various points during his reign, and he had his fingerprints on the '05 title via Konerko, Buehrle, Garland, Crede, Rowand, etc. And besides, if I drafted like Schueler, I'd probably be afraid to trade prospects as well. Now, in Kenny's case, you could see why he wouldn't have much fear.
  3. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 2, 2012 -> 08:02 PM) So when we had Magglio, C-Lee, Rowand, Crede, Durham, Konerko....all coming up together, basically....baseball was more enjoyable then? Ron Schueler is one of my heroes in life.
  4. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 2, 2012 -> 05:13 PM) To say Chris Getz is anything close to a good major league ballplayer or a starter on anything but a last place team is pushing it. Agreed. That was my point. But I hope that Kenny hits on a few of his recent draft picks. I'm sick of being disgusted with our offensive prospects. It really takes away from my baseball experience.
  5. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 2, 2012 -> 04:55 AM) I guess it depends upon whether you're actually talking about hitting or value from an offensive player. If we're talking strictly hitting and using OPS as the base guideline, the best hitter he's drafted since 2001 (if we're including 2001) is Chris Young with a career OPS of .756. Then you have others of note, including Josh Fields, Ryan Sweeney, Jeremy Reed, and Gordon Beckham. Merely an argument of semantics. The Sox have not drafted nor developed hitters very well for a long time. There's a lot of comedic value in saying that Chris Getz is the second best hitter that we've drafted since 2001. It might not be entirely accurate, but I'll go with it anyway. I thought that caulfield was only kidding about Chris Carter.
  6. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 2, 2012 -> 02:23 AM) Nope, Chris Carter is 2nd. I stand corrected.
  7. QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 09:34 PM) 3:26 Ben Nicholson-Smith: Williams was one the game's most resourceful GMs, trading from a system that didn't include highly-regarded prospects to upgrade his lineup, bullpen and rotation. He damn well better be resourceful. Chris Getz is the second best hitter that he's drafted since 2001, and most of the posters on this board have better plate discipline than Alexei Ramirez or Dayan Viciedo.
  8. QUOTE (whitesox901 @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 03:23 AM) I am perfectly fine with Beckham not hitting because his glove is outstanding. Right, at a position where you can find plenty of replacement level players that can do a comparable job on defense. Let's keep his horrible bat in the lineup, by all means. Boy oh boy, am I really losing faith in this fanbase.
  9. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 03:16 AM) What's the point? We've been in the Top 5 in the AL for most of this season in runs scored. Now we're suddenly worried about offense and KW's position player picks over the last decade? HUH? You don't see the bigger picture here? Money that we've dished out to guys like Dunn, Rios, etc could have been spent elsewhere, thereby making us a perennial World Series contender. That doesn't appeal to you? When have we ever been a legit WS contender during Kenny's reign? You see what I'm getting at now?
  10. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 03:58 AM) Considering KW's draft allotment, having 11 make the show isn't bad, especially considering only 1 was a top 10 pick. Next... You serious, man? Plenty of guys make it to the big leagues only to find out that they're scrubs. The point that you're making here is completely irrelevant. And as far as draft allotment is concerned, how many countless all star caliber hitters have been drafted outside of the 1st round? That's not a good excuse.
  11. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 03:56 AM) Who has done better with pitching? What team leads the majors in quality starts since 2003? It's easier to win with good pitching than it to build an offensive powerhouse and add pitching to go with it. Look the Royals for the last 20 years. That's a different discussion, but it seems like you're disregarding the importance of offense here. Balance is what gets it done.
  12. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 03:51 AM) Bleh, thanks for reminding me why I stopped posting here. Troll city these days, I miss this site. Wait, now I'm a troll for pointing out that KW's best offensive draft pick in ten years time is a career .238 hitter? Is that the way of it? If you got nothing to counter with, then disappear.
  13. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 03:47 AM) But you're missing 2/3rd's of the picture. Nobody gives a freakin' trophy for best farm system or best attendance. You're missing all the pitchers that have been acquired like Sale, Contreras, Garcia, Javy, Thornton (for Borchard), Loiaza (flipped for Jose), Floyd, Danks, McCarthy, Holmberg, Hudson, Richard, Jenks, Santos, Humber, Quintana ON and ON and ON. International free agents, they got Iguchi, Takatsu, Viciedo, Ramirez, etc. PITCHING IS MUCH MORE VALUABLE THAN POSITION PLAYERS, with the possible exceptions of SS, C and CF. Got AJ for nothing....DeAza for nothing....Alexei for virtually nothing (his original contract). Alex Rios for nothing. Got Quentin for Carter, who took 4 years to make a significant impact. K. Walker should be on the list, too. In the end, drafting position players is only 15-20% of what a GM does. KW has compensated in a multitude of other areas. Nobody is talking about pitching in this thread, though. I have no beef with Kenny as far as that's concerned.
  14. By the way, Chris Young is gonna be 30 years old next year. His career average is .238, and his OPS is .750. That said, he is Kenny's best offensive draft pick. But keep thinking about how Pods led us to the World Series, though. That's a good diversion.
  15. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 08:30 PM) Bring in Trout-type players or you fail as a GM. Uh, this is what a Top 20 list of K-Dub's offensive draft picks from 2001 to 2009 might look like (and no, he did not draft Michael Morse). Chris Young Gordon Beckham Brent Morel Jeremy Reed Brian Anderson Ryan Sweeney Chris Getz Chris Carter Aaron Cunningham Josh Fields Donny Lucy Brandon Allen Clinton King Robert Valido Jon Zeringue Jay Mattox Tyler Reves John Shelby Jared Mitchell Josh Phegley Trayce Thompson I've never heard of some of those guys - I mostly just included players who were drafted in the first 5 rounds. This is probably the worst offensive run of any GM in baseball, correct? Like I said before, he's getting by on payroll. Anybody can bring in a Dunn, Thome, Dye, Rios, etc if they have the financial backing. You seem like a pretty intelligent guy - it's shocking to me that you don't understand this.
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 09:16 PM) Except the draft isn't the only way to bring players in to an organization. What Kenny has been successful at is taking those draft picks and players and turning them into All-Star hitters. Like who?
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 09:03 PM) Way to keep moving the goalposts... First it was brought in, then it was drafted, then certain guys don't count. "Brought in" includes both free agents and draft picks, at least to my understanding. You're bringing both into your organization, are you not? Kenny has the financial means to bring in guys like Rios and Dunn, or resign Konerko. That's the only thing that's saving him. Theoretically, you should not be a GM if you can't draft even one all star caliber hitter in 10 years time.
  18. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 08:42 PM) White Sox haven't put as much into the draft and have had a lower draft position with just a few exceptions. He's acquired Quentin, Alexei, DeAza and Viciedo...doesn't matter where they came from. I'm pretty sure Chris Young of the D-Backs made an All-Star team at some point, although I could be wrong. We didn't surrender anything in terms of talent for Rios, who made two All-Star teams with the Jays. And that's a sorry ass resume. Rios doesn't warrant mention here. Anybody could have had him, given enough financial support.
  19. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 08:39 PM) Please be sure to pass on your quote of where you mentioned "drafted". The term was "brought in" Come on, man. It's all-encompassing.
  20. QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Jul 25, 2012 -> 08:06 PM) Kenny has no idea what he's doing when it comes to bringing in offensive personnel. QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Jul 25, 2012 -> 08:12 PM) That's an oversimplification. He's had some hits and some misses. Quentin, Ramirez, Podsednik, Iguchi, Pierzynski were all excellent acquisitions by Williams. QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Jul 25, 2012 -> 08:06 PM) You have ridiculously low standards. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 07:58 PM) Yeah not like any of those losers led the way to a WS win, MVP votes, league leaders, etc. All losers MVP votes and league leaders - that's pretty funny. Has Kenny Williams drafted an all star caliber hitter since he got the gig in 2001?
  21. 22. People want to keep Beckham around for his glove, but 2B is not a crucial defensive position. If we're talking about SS or C, then yeah, you can live with a .650 to .700 OPS type in the starting lineup. There is no backup plan for Beckham, of course. It's the same story at 3B with Morel, unless they shell out the cash for Youkilis, which is unlikely. Kenny has no idea what he's doing when it comes to bringing in offensive personnel. He's the type of guy that will make OF a priority in the first round, and then proceed to take a pass on Mike Trout. I hope that people have figured out why he selected Mitchell. The Hawkins pick might have turned on some light bulbs. It's probably just better to cover your ears and sing nursery rhymes.
  23. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Jul 22, 2012 -> 09:49 PM) Females aren't what they use to be. They are getting to be like type a males. Look in public schools and you'll find girls aren't girls anymore. They are the ones committing violence. Thanks, I needed a good laugh this morning.
  24. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 24, 2012 -> 12:12 PM) It would be a lot more interesting if Trout was the one who was acting like a prick and prima donna and Harper was the good guy. Why is Harper a prick again? What meaningful evidence is there to suggest that he's not a good person?
