QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jun 24, 2005 -> 07:24 PM) I know. I was just speaking hypothetically. All good, figuring I had to respond since you quoted me therefore making it look more like a retort.

QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jun 24, 2005 -> 07:13 PM) Yeah, who would really want to see McCarthy pitching on Sunday against Prior at the Cell, on a blazing hot day, with the wind blowing out? He would probably give up 6 homers. I'd rather have the groundball pitcher going in those kind of longball conditions. QUOTE(Fotop @ Jun 24, 2005 -> 07:11 PM) I certainly remember, I was there. But still, he had success against the Cubs even if the elements played a role. Do I want him to start on sunday? No, Garland is def. the choice, I'm just trying to say that McCarthy has looked good against the Cubs before. I'm def. not in favor of a McCarthy start, as you can see. I was just trying to point out that McCarthy has pitched well...that's pretty much it.

QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jun 24, 2005 -> 07:07 PM) And he gave up a lot of hard hit balls. The wind was blowing in hard that day, remember? I certainly remember, I was there. But still, he had success against the Cubs even if the elements played a role. Do I want him to start on sunday? No, Garland is def. the choice, I'm just trying to say that McCarthy has looked good against the Cubs before.

QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jun 24, 2005 -> 07:04 PM) Uhhh, no. Well McCarthy held his own the last time he faced Prior...but this time around I wouldn't be so sure. Either way, you can't take McCarthy's first start away from him. He pitched well at Wrigley.

I play cash games at Pacific Poker mostly, with a little interpoker here and there. Mostly limit holdem tables, with a few SnG and Multi Tournies when I'm bored. My best finish was about 2-3 weeks ago w/I took 4th in a 600 person multi. It was crazy fun, but I highly reccomend NOT getting into real money online poker until you know your way around the game because it moves rather fast.

QUOTE(Southside hitmen @ Jun 23, 2005 -> 07:27 PM) Im glad I put a thousand on the Sox at 40-1 odds at the beginning of the season to win the world series. Did anyone else put money down I don't care how good we are, that's an awful bet. Mainly because you wouldn't be able to gain money on it like a stock if you were able to get out of your committment right now. Predicting any team to win the world series at the beginning of the year is a downright crapshoot. Those types of bets, along with parlays and teasers are the reason there's shiny new casinos popping up everywhere. EDIT: Btw, if you were are something like tradesports then you would be able to get out of your position at anytime. That's why I've got some money in 10cent contracts for ND to win the BCS...if we reel off wins in our first 3-4 games, I can make some scratch.

QUOTE(Cerbaho-WG @ Jun 23, 2005 -> 03:57 PM) Wait, Lee says he doesn't want to be back on Chicago because he's overshadowed by Frank, Paulie, etc? But he enjoys Milwaukee because he's looked up to? EGO alert, WAKE THE f*** UP NED YOST! Enjoy trying to hit 10 run homers, El Caballo, we don't miss you. I agree Cerb, that article came off as classic Carlos "egomaniac" Lee. I don't care how many HRs he hits for Milwaukee, to me, this is just more evidence of him being a me-first player. I'll take a Scott Podsednik, a Tadahito Iguchi, or an AJ Pierzynski over Carlos Lee any day of the week. They know their roles, and do everything for the TEAM. Granted, we could have gotten a bit more in the deal but you have to give talent to get talent. I mean Pods is a huge reason why we're dominating right now yet everyone wants to have their cake and eat it too by desiring a sweetheart deal from Milwaukee.

QUOTE(Goldmember @ Jun 23, 2005 -> 12:55 AM) please explain how zook, or any coach for that matter, can control whether a player does or does not do stupid s*** off campus and/or out of state. Directly? Not a damn thing. Indirectly? In many ways. The way the program is run, the policies which they put into place, the punishment they give to those who refuse to follow the rules, etc. Creating an environment where these players are responsible and mature goes a long way both on and off the field. Now I have no clue if this is being done, nor do I know the punishments of Illini players who cause trouble, but the off the field stuff needs to be dealt with swiftly if you want to see success on the field. That's just my opinion from being around many who have played college sports. As for my earlier post I was more reacting to the response of "Well it's not his player, he didn't recruit him." I was more peeved at that then the situation, because I have experienced that defense a lot (see: The Tyrone Willingham Era). It's a cop out, and frankly it's bulls***. When you become the coach of a team, they are your players regardless of who brought them in.
-
QUOTE(TheDybber @ Jun 22, 2005 -> 05:50 PM) Of course, Halsey wasn't Zook's recruit. Nor has he played a down for him yet. So, yeah, let's blame Zook. So if he wasn't his recruit he isn't his player? He is the head coach right? Run a tight ship is all I'm saying, since a lot of people have already called Zook the savior of the program even though like you have said no downs have been played yet. Not calling anyone out personally, hell people around my school are just the same about Weis. All I'm saying is it's a two-way street, and I'm just expressing my opinion that I don't think Zook is a good HC (and it isn't just because of recent transpirings). Even though this board does tilt towards the Illini (and rightfully so), I feel as though I can at least provide prospective on the opposing view.

QUOTE(chi-guy2 @ Jun 22, 2005 -> 05:14 PM) problem with texas is if their hitting takes off its not gonna be able for us to catch them, as we saw in our last series with them, im hoping right now that a team like the mariners gets on fire and passes the angels, because i would love revenge against them for last time Well ya, if they're hot sure. But you could basically say that about any of the potential playoff teams because they all have pretty good offenses (except maybe for us, but the rest are damn good...boston and new york included). The reason I like texas is because their SP is so bad and their bullpen has one pitcher in cordero. Add in the fact that pretty much none of them have played in the playoffs and I like the matchup. Oh and Texas or Anaheim being eclipsed by the A's or the mariners is far from reality. Even if they did, they'd be hard-pressed to make the playoffs unless they won the West.

QUOTE(BHAMBARONS @ Jun 22, 2005 -> 05:21 PM) Oh the C stands for Charles Well ya that would make a ton of sense. *Removing foot from mouth*

We already have a Juan Pierre...his name is Scott Podsednik and he's blowing Pierre out of the water this year. I don't really see him as a good fit, Iguchi is the perfect two hole hitter for our lineup and Dye's power brings balance to our lineup. BALANCE is what has gotten us here, and to me adding another singles hitting OF would disrupt that. Plus defensively we'd have guys running on us all day with two s***ty arms out there. No thanks. Plus, we have much greater needs...another solid bullpen arm being need numero uno.
-
Haeger's First start in AA, right? 5IP, 6H, 4ER, 3BB, 1K, 0HR Not bad for a debut, plus he got the win! EDIT: In the box score it also lists C next to his name...did he catch today as well? If so that'd be kind of odd. Btw, Fields w/3hits today...maybe he's turning it around.

Just plain speculating here, but my list of preferences would probably be: 1) Texas 2) Baltimore 3) Anaheim Texas is just too green (not saying we're not either), but I could really see some of their young guys struggling. Plus, their pitching is probably the worst of the potential playoff teams. As long as we'd be able to shut down most of the main cogs in their offense (tex, soriano, etc) I'd really like our chances. Anaheim's bullpen scares the s*** out of me even though we've handled them before, and baltimore has some underrated starting pitching (plus their offense is just as potent as texas). However, this discussion could all be moot because some teams could change drastically by august 1st. I will tell you one thing though, I'm rooting like hell against New York and Boston...I don't care what anyone says, I would much rather see playoffs without them (but I'm sure at least one will make it).

QUOTE(shakes @ Jun 22, 2005 -> 01:35 PM) It sounds like Zook is running a real tight ship so far. Funny but true. But hey, he can recruit right? Well then I guess that's all that matters.

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Jun 22, 2005 -> 04:04 PM) Big East vs. ACC would be interesting... It used to be Big East v. ACC, but then the Big East dropped the ball and the Big Ten wisely picked it up. But you're right, it would be interesting now that the Big East is such a basketball monster.

QUOTE(Soxnbears01 @ Jun 22, 2005 -> 12:38 PM) general question here: in the new introduction video before the game (the one with all the old highlights and such......before thunderstruck) what is that song? i'd love to have that video. I believe the music to the new video before the game is the theme from Pirates of the Carribean. As for Sox songs, how about the Steve Dahl White Sox Song released in '93 when the Sox won the division? A little cheesy and not that great, but when I was a kid I loved it at the time.

QUOTE(mr_genius @ Jun 20, 2005 -> 10:09 PM) haha, uh no one is saying that... we are saying he isn't ready for the majors yet... comprehensive reading my friend, learn it. Oh I'm sorry, I forgot that threads are mutually exclusive from one another. This thread combined with the other shows me that people are nutting themselves over their very BOLD and GLORIOUS predictions of a 21 year old not being ready and struggling in the majors. Good job, on that. I'll be sure to listen to you guys when predict the next gem...maybe whether or not the sun will rise tommorow? But running him out there is a necessity in the assessment of the team's weaknesses. If he could hack it, great, we don't need to go grab a pitcher. Needless to say, I'd at least give him another start or two.
-
I'd have to say no. Cotts is finally getting comfortable in the pen and is gaining a good amount of confidence, so why jerk him around again? IF McCarthy is not the answer, then we need to look outside of the organization if Duque is down for an extended period of time. That's the solution.
-
QUOTE(Jimenez4MVP @ Jun 20, 2005 -> 09:48 PM) HOLY s***, STOP MAKING EXCUSES HE WOULDNT BE IN THE MAJORS IF THEY DIDNT EXPECT HIM TO PRODUCE WHICH HE ISNT! It's really easy to take a s*** on a 21 yr old prospect flung into a team that expects perfection every night. Simply put, I think everyone needs to take a step back and not write McCarthy off so soon. You guys make sound like he's Kris Honel or something. But hey, if posting I told you so's every start gets your rocks off, then go right ahead and splooge all over your monitor.
-
Or his refusal to do what was necessary to help the ballclub. I think remember reading something along the lines of him not conforming to what Cincy wanted from him. Classic D'Angelo.
-
QUOTE(Jimenez4MVP @ Jun 20, 2005 -> 07:04 PM) Career .267 hitter with a career .350 OBP... that doesnt suck And s*** for brains...but sure we can go off of raw statistics.

I think what most people fail to realize here is two things: 1) This guy was pitching in Winston Salem at this time last year. 2) He's one of the youngest guys at Triple A right now. (Probably would be the youngest if it wasn't for Felix Hernandez) He's friggin' 21 for Pete's sake! You guys are going to write him off for half of a below average season at AAA? Man, I'd hate to see your reactions to the major league club. How little does everyone forget that this man lead the minors in K's last year and elevated through three levels. If he had a 95+mph fastball, he'd be the second coming in the eyes of scouts...and hell who knows he could get a spike in his velocity still. However, I am in it for the long haul with BMac. I'm not going to sit here and bash him after two starts or a half of a season at AAA. If he goes Borchard or Crede on us, then sure I'll lose my patience. But jumping the gun on him, whether calling him amazing or awful, is probably not wise right now. To me, he's the closest thing I've ever seen to a "pitching prospect" in our organization. So I'll just sit back and enjoy watching him grow. I suggest everyone else does the same.

QUOTE(danman31 @ Jun 18, 2005 -> 01:12 PM) Gio left with an injury. Any word on what it was/seriousness of it?
