  1. The answer is NO. Sweeney is locked up for awhile I believe, and his contract becomes massive if traded ($9million turns into $12million if traded). And I doubt KC would want to take on any of that contract to alleivate the financial burden on Sweeney's new team. Also, I'm assuming KC is looking for at least two top prospects for Sweeney, and for a guy that's pretty injury prone and produces just about the same (if not less than konerko) it doesn't make much sense. Now if we were talking Todd Helton here, well that would be a different story. This is lke my one billionth time dropping his name, but if moving Konerko is a real option, Helton needs to be the guy targeted. I'm sure Colorado would be willing to take about 30-40 million of his contract if the deal is right and Helton is one of the premier left-handed bats in the game. Thomas/Helton 3-4 would be absolutely ridiculous. This is all assuming this is done mid-season which is highly unlikely since the White Sox are playing so well and Konerko is, even though it doesn't look like it, a key part of the offense. The most likely scenario is the Sox moving someone like Contreras in the off-season for a new 1st baseman, offering Konerko arbitration, and then getting two draft picks when someone pays outta their ass for him. But if we're going to talk about replacing Konerko mid-season, Mike Sweeney is defintely not the answer to improve the club in the short and long term.
  2. QUOTE(retro1983hat @ May 17, 2005 -> 01:24 PM) Yes we are in first, yes we have the best record .... but, we do have serious concerns. Shingo, PK and JD are problems that HAVE to be addressed. We can't just say, oh well, we are in first place. No, that is a Cub mentality. Just be happy because it's more fun. No, KW needs to make sure he keeps this team performing at its best. Even if that means shaking things up. Cub Mentality? How the hell would they know, they haven't been in first since aught six!

lol that ps3 controller is configed more like an xbox controller now. Reminds me of the big xbox controller when it first came out.
  4. QUOTE(Steff @ May 16, 2005 -> 05:10 PM) I find it sad that some of you here are more interested in attendance that what the team is doing. :headshake I agree, 100% Let the White Sox organization worry about the numbers and the finances and such. All of this stuff is peripheral (media, attendance, the CUBS, etc)...at least to me. Enjoy the team and their success, it'll make things a lot more fun for the time being.
  5. $11 million contract means that there is no way in hell that Wood will close. It just a waste of cash. Combine that with having to pitch multiple days in a row, and I doubt Wood will be closing anytime soon. Who knows how Wood would respond to pitching nearly everyday...and to me, they're stuck because with his track record I don't think his arm could hold up. If I were the Cubs I'd hope and pray that he recovers from this, watch him very, very closely and then put him on strict pitch counts/off-day training when he comes back. If they want to get any return out of the money they invested in Wood, they should change the way they deal with him. But of course with Dusty at the helm I doubt you see this...
  6. Big win, sets the tone for the series. Plus we're now 5 up on the Twins with their off-day today. I think when we look back in a year or two we can say that this was one of the games that solidified Jon Garland as a legitimate, middle to top of the rotation starter. That job he did on Tejada in the 8th made me a true believer. What a great job by Garland tonight, I can't stress that enough.
  7. Marte is probably Ozzie's guy here, personally I'd go w/Hermanson. Hopefully it won't matter and we can mow 'em down.
  8. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ May 12, 2005 -> 09:14 PM) So, who's going to start the 9th? Garland has 103 pitches, so I would assume he's out. But, Ozzie is the manager, so that assumption is worthless. Hermanson I would imagine...but it's Ozzie so it'll probably be Marte for Palmeiro, and then he'll get yanked for Hermy when he gets in trouble.
  9. Can we say Garland has "turned the corner" now? That was an AWESOME JOB there! Way to throw the breaking stuff with the count full. Alright Jon! Now let's get some insurance so he gets his 7th win!
  10. Tough luck for Jon. Broken bat single for Mora. Fight back. get tejada Jon.
  11. Well there's your A ball player. Heads up play by Jon, taking advatange of the greenhorn's mistake.
  12. Brian Roberts = Orioles Sox Killer.... There's one on every team.
  13. The hitting has made Steve Reed look damn good the last two innings. Shut 'em down Jon! 6 outs to go!
  14. QUOTE(Wedge @ May 12, 2005 -> 07:06 PM) Not necessarily true... Mo was sort of a AAAA prospect in the trade for Garcia, whereas Contreras is a guy with a fairly established track record in the majors. AAAA prospect? Olivo was an everyday player for the white sox and the starting catcher. Hell half of this board almost jumped off a bridge after trading him AND reed. In hindsight, I guess you could call him that since he's been struggling, but at the time Olivo was ML-level, young talent.
  15. Anyone catch the interview Dan Patrick just had w/Rosenhaus on SC? I didn't think very highly of either of them before the interview, and after the interview I could say that I don't like them even more now. Patrick ambushes every guest on SC these days, and this time was no different and Rosenhaus came off like a stereotypical sleazeball agent. Needless to say, it didn't make for good tv. It was a train-wreck of awkwardness.
  16. Defintely a slow news day in sports, White Sox feature on PTI...talk about garland on SC next. Yanks, Cubs, and Sawks must be off.
  17. QUOTE(sircaffey @ May 11, 2005 -> 07:57 PM) Just think about it this way. Think about last year's crappy bullpen and the negative effect that it had on the team. Then contrast that with the bullpen this year, and you notice a huuuuge difference no? Well now add in Billy Wagner and you would notice an even bigger impact to this team's performance. The bullpen is vital, and if we add Wagner, we suddenly are playing 6-7 inning ballgames... On a related note, had we kept Foulke instead of getting Boch, then I think we would have seen 2-3 division titles since 2000... Bottomline, successful playoff teams have great closers. Bullpen by committee does not cut it. But who says we have to be a bullpen by committee? With the way Ozzie is handling the pen, it certainly seems like that's the mode we're set in, but in reality it should be Hermanson out there for the ninth. In all seriousness, Guillen has too quick of a hook at all the wrong times, and he plays way too much with the lefty-right matchup. I'm not necessarily saying Wagner is an awful idea, I'd love to see him on our team. I just don't think the price is going to be right though, and I also believe help on the offensive side is a more glaring need of the team. We'll see if Frank has that great of an impact on the offense, but if the offense still continues to struggle into July, don't you think the flexibility of the remaining available payroll should be used on the offense? I sure do.
  18. QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ May 11, 2005 -> 07:04 PM) Isn't Gonz pretty young? I wouldn't see then moving him but who knows. Being that he's in a walk year and that this is a special season I don't buy the "we're dreaming" reasoning that would normally apply to fantasy trades I certainly buy the reasoning, the Phillies have a track record of wanting a king's ransom for any of their players. If that weren't true then guys like Polanco wouldn't be rotting away on their bench, and Howard would have gotten dealt last year. Realistically, with the way the market would shape up (w/wagner being the elite player, and many teams looking for a closer) do you think the Sox would overpay for Wagner? I mean Hermanson hasn't given up a single run this year, Politte has been lights out, Marte has been decent, and Shingo can't be that bad can he? Personally, I think it's been the management of the bullpen that has made them look like a weakness this year and their deficiencies have been overblown (esp. on this site). My concerns lie with the offense, so to me by pumping all of the money we may have left into Wagner makes me somewhat hesitant. That's why I think Gonzalez is the pickup here, if the bullpen is as bad as people are trying to say. Then, you have some flexibility to add a bat or two which helps shore up the offense.
  19. QUOTE(qwerty @ May 11, 2005 -> 06:57 PM) I don't know where we are gonn apull the money out of our ass to resign him if we dalt for him. If they were willing to raise the payoll that much to resign him that would be great but i have my doubts they are gonna want a closer making 8+ million dollars a year. I agree qwerty, I doubt they'd take on a closer that gets paid that much. Personally, I feel as though Mike Gonzalez is a much more feasible option. It's known that Pitt has long had interest in Borch, so maybe Borch, another prospect get it done for Gonzalez. I know a lot of you like to dream about Wagner, I secretly hold out that we'd get Helton somehow, someway...but in reality things like that are far from happening. The way this year's team is setup makes it so there's really no way to bring an impact guy in since there's a good amount of depth everywhere, and to upgrade you'd have to release some decent sized contracts (Everett, Dye, Konerko, etc.). It just seems like there's a lot of adjusting that needs to be made to add some of the big names...that's why I think you'll only see us add one or two guys to fill in the gaps (Graffanino, Gonzalez, etc).
  20. You can all pull yourselves back from the ledge now...
  21. QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ May 7, 2005 -> 12:12 AM) Is there a reason behind the Blue Jays games starting 7 minutes past the hour? Two national anthems.
