  1. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jan 27, 2010 -> 11:33 PM) There's a reason why they are WSI and we are soxtalk. And I don't just mean the copyright bulls***. Dont get me started on WSI...one time they banned me for saying "hilljack"
  2. I wonder how u come up short on 1 year $5.5M offer for the perfect DH for your team. What did they offer Johnson, like 1 Year 3M?? And how do u not match the offer of $5.5? WTF???
  3. QUOTE (BFirebird @ Jan 26, 2010 -> 01:41 PM) You took the words right out of the post I was going to type out. I think this is spot on. Guys like Jones and Kotsay are stop-gap type additions until more of their younger players are ready or players they want to acquire FA-wise (next year) or trade-wise are available. I was listening to Cowley on the radio last night and he made some interesting points about the rotating DH not being the worst idea. While I don't usually agree with him or like him for that matter...he brought up the multiple guys that could hit 20 homers and on off nights they have more guys that can manufacture runs (A La the "Pirahanas"), but I don't think the Sox have ALL the right parts to make it work. I think it is naive of us to think that this kind of overhaul could be completed in 1 offseason. It appears they are changing their philosophy a bit and I guess we will just have to sit back over the next 2 years and see if it works. I believe in the same theory, this is a process. A strategic shift from penicling in a lift and pull baseclogger from the DH position to one that can say do some more. A good stopgap that meets both parties halfway would be Damon or Blalock becuase they provide 20+ HR pop from the left side, can play the field, and arent ur typical basecloggers. I also thought Tejada or Atkins wouldnt have been bad either. Though I do believe the white sox would love develop or acquire a player that can be a rotational DH and play the field well too. Im thinking along the lines of a better Mark Tehean type. My gut tells me this could be Alex Rios if Jordan Danks develops into an everyday OF or say the sox go after Carl Crawford next year.
  4. Since Ozzie doest want Thome I think its not truely about this "dont want a full time DH" thing. I think its about speed. It looks like this full time statement is just a way to say he doens't want a baseclogging lumberjack on his roster. That way his DH can be someone like Damon or Blalock, who he can then claim "can also play the field". It doesn't necessarily have to be Kotsay or Jones.
  5. this is freaking hilarious
  6. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jan 22, 2010 -> 06:39 PM) They had to pay him that sum when he was released so it was added to the 2009 payroll. Damn...nicely done.
  7. According to my information the white sox are also paying 350K for a buyout of Mike MacDougals contract. I didnt see that in the option buyouts section of your sheet.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 22, 2010 -> 10:43 AM) You know the scary thing? If you look at Becksy's numbers after he got over that initial 30 ab's of nothing, he hit .286 with 28 doubles and 14 HR over his last 350 at bats. If you simply project up to 550 at bats, that's 22 HR and 44 2b...if he does absolutely nothing in terms of improvement beyond where he was once he adapted to big league pitching. I would think about this the other way around. More likely league pitching makes adaption to Beckham's swing and we will see how he responds. Remember it takes awhile for league to catch up in regards to scouting reports and film. I expect them to attach Beckham totally different this year.
  9. This deal makes very little sense. I severly doubt the twins would like to stick Jason "doughboy" Kubel in left field most of the year so Thome can DH. Delmon Young is their LF and Kubel is a well above average DH already. If Thome does go there I could see him only as a bench player, but it sill makes very little sense.
  10. Brooks told me personally about a month ago that the sox were in negotiations with PNC to become the new banking sponser. Something the team missed pretty badly last year with the whole financial industry debacle. PNC is one of the healthy banks and had recently acquired National City in order to make a prescence in the Midwest, namely the Chicago market. I had brought up this fact to Brooks stating they might be a willing banking partner for the sox since they are looking to make a splash in Chicago and he replied stating they were already in negotiations. Cant comment on if a deal is going to result or not, but I wouldn't be surprised if its just a matter of time.
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 11:29 AM) For Jones, there's more to it than being in shape, he has some serious technical things with his swing (see his 2005 season). Although that'd be a great sign. This is what I was thinking. I remember his issues being pretty clearly illustrated on ESPN and Baseball tonite. When they broke down his swing it was easy to see why he was failing. Something in his mechanics had changed from when he was a productive to player to someone struggling to hit their weight. IIRC it had to do with his body mechanics and weight transfer. When they showed his before/after it was obvious whatever he was doing was creating a long loopy big swing and motion which was causing him to struggle to catch up to 90 MPH fastballs any anything breaking low & away in the zone. I am much more concerned with his swing mechanics at this point that his physical weight. Though being in shape does help at some point, but hey John Kruk had lucrative baseball career as a dough boy.
  12. QUOTE (GREEDY @ Jan 19, 2010 -> 07:46 PM) To my eye RAAAAAAAAANDY was just laying it in there late last season. I expect the hitters to catch up to him in 2010. The Sox won the World Series on the backs of three relievers (Cotts, Politte, Hermanson) that were just throwing first ball strikes and constantly challenging hitters; it isn't a terrible strategy but it is very difficult to sustain long term success without being able to make hitters miss... at least from time to time. Id agree with that, they had just never seen him before. They will figure him out ala Shingo in 2005.
  13. QUOTE (Ranger @ Jan 19, 2010 -> 02:51 PM) Many relievers are journeymen. Well at least he is part of Ozzie's "B Squad" in the pen. Along with Linebrink of course.
  14. QUOTE (klaus kinski @ Jan 19, 2010 -> 03:11 PM) DH spot has been productive and such a part of past successes I cant believe they'd ignore it now The danks deal puts us at like $99.5 Mil before we have to pay our 4 guys that will make the league min. That will put is right at like $101 mil. I doubt that there is still $4-6M sitting there for the DH position. JR has said if something too good to pass up comes along then the $$ will be there, but nothing on the FA market for a DH at the moment would qualify as too good to pass up. If Thome or Blalock asks for like 1 Year 2Mil...maybe I could see the sox pulling the trigger but I dont think they even looking to spend $5 Mil on a DH at this point.
  15. Handing Randy "journeyman" Williams anything makes me uneasy.
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 18, 2010 -> 11:22 PM) If we hit all of those, we win the division at least. True dat. Kenny and Jerry better hope they are paying those incentives at the end of the year.
  17. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jan 18, 2010 -> 07:04 PM) Good, I believe we're now on the same page: $96.125M after the Pena signing. Yep exactly.
  18. QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Jan 18, 2010 -> 08:42 PM) His high WHIP was largely due to his unsustainably high hit rate (.346 BABIP) which is much higher than his career average of .303. If you regress his BABIP for '09, his luck neutral WHIP would have been around 1.24, which is also known as 2nd best amongst our relievers last year. I don't know why people are so down on Pena, maybe they dislike the trade and it's affecting their judgment. Pena is a very solid reliever. $1.2m is good value for someone who should come in with a WAR of around 1 next year. I actually dont think hes that bad...i call him a serviceable reliver. I was going to be very mad if he was going to relied upon as the prime RH setup guy. Now that Putz is in the fold I feel much better about Pena and his role.
  19. Konerko for 2/10 or 1/5 with some incentives would be a fine by me after the season is over. Five mil per year is what like Hideki and Vlad got for the DH position at the same age.
  20. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jan 18, 2010 -> 06:13 PM) 1.2 mil? Not bad at all. Thought he'd get more for some reason. 1.2 Mil for Tony "Floating Fastball" Pena. Yay im jumping for joy...gotta love that 1.53 WHIP too.
  21. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jan 17, 2010 -> 08:45 PM) Pierzynski will make $6.7M in '10 thanks to incentives he reached over the past 2 seasons and I do believe Alexei's $500K signing bonus was paid up front, not over the life of the contract. And as of right now it's 4 pre-arb players, not 3. Your right on all three fronts, It matched up with Cot's. Ive got AJ at 6.75 now according to them. My total is now $94.825 before Danks, Pena, and the 4 Pre-Arb guys.
  22. Ok here's what I got. Most of the numbers came from Cot's Baseball Contracts. Mark Buehrle - $14M Jake Peavy - $15M John Danks - Arb Freddy Garcia - $1M Gavin Floyd - $2.75M Bobby Jenks - $7.5M Scott Linebrink - $5M JJ Putz - $3M Tony Pena - Arb Matt Thornton - $2.25M Daniel Hudson - Pre-Arb Randy Williams - Pre-Arb Ramon Castro - $0.8M AJ Pierzynski - $6.25M Omar Vizquel - $1.375M Mark Tehean - $3.75M Paul Konerko - $12M Jayson Nix - Pre-Arb Dayan Viciedo - $1.25M Alexi Ramirez - $1.225 Gordon Beckham - Pre-Arb Andruw Jones - $0.5M Carlos Quentin - $3.2M Alex Rios - $9.7M Mark Kotsay - $1.5M Juan Pierre - $10M Total Guaranteed Salary - $102.05M Option Buyouts - +$1M Cash Considerations - ($8.5M) Actual Payroll - $94.55M So assuming Danks + Pena costs another $4M and our 3 pre-arb cost $1.275M (425K each) that's another $5.275M on top of the $94.55M. That would make the total assumed payroll to be $99.825M. So the whole $100M ceiling is right on.
  23. Adding in the $3.2M for Quentin and $7.5 for Jenks I have got the sox right now with $93.75M. That includes the cash coming in for Pierre and Tehean as well as the $1M out for JDs buyout. It doesn't include Pena's and Danks' salary or the 5 or so league minumum's that are going to be there as well. That being said its fairly easy to see that the Sox payroll limit is about $100M this year.
  24. Does anyone else think the sox will extend Alexi after this year. 2011 is his final year at $1.1M and then hes arb eligible. My guess would be the sox offer him some sort of 3 year 14 mil extension like they gave Tehean.
  25. The money does not leave the organization. One of my parents friends is a shareholder. The owners own equity in the team, the dont get cash from profit, they are not on payroll. The only way a shareholder or owner makes hard cash from their ownership is if they were to sell their stake in the organization. That is where the increased value of the team is important. Being worth 450 Million instead of 300 Mil makes your shares worth more when sold. The actualy money the team makes goes into the organization as a whole. Payroll, player development, spring training facilities, stadium upgrades, front office payroll/benefits, insurance, services, etc. All those things are paid for by the cash they take in. If there is any cash leftover at the end it is simply added to an area of need or held on to (assumably earning interest) until a need is found. Where do you think the money comes from for mid-season acquisitions or to pay for the supposed new bar/restaurant area outside Gate 5.
