With the current state of the Sox, the managerial job is not a good one. Due to the success of the Rays, Martinez will get to pick his spot (Cubs?)
-
Williams said in the Haugh column today that 2012 does not matter. The 2012 lineup should be the least of our concerns.

QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 28, 2011 -> 02:11 PM) For what, another reliever that if we're lucky will be as good as he is in 3 years when Santos is still under our control? well, no. I mean if he is as valuable as many think, the return should be excellent, no?
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 28, 2011 -> 01:40 PM) Actually, there's plenty of reason to think it could be a lot higher next year if he cuts down on the blown saves and snaps off a complete season. He's a 60 inning reliever with excellent K numbers. Deal him now, he will not be missed in 2014.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 28, 2011 -> 01:55 PM) And as that arm gets built up year over year, the chances of that happening keep going up. A lot of teams would love to have Santos, and the best thing we would get back is a guy who might be as good as Sergio in a few years. By 2014, Santos will be just another bullpen arm.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Sep 28, 2011 -> 01:37 PM) Yes, nothing say rebuild like trading away the few proven cost-controlled pieces you have for, um, unproven cost-controlled pieces. 2014.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 28, 2011 -> 01:36 PM) Santos is an incredible value even if not a closer, just in the pen. He made less than 500k this year and ranked 8th in saves in only his second MLB season and first as a closer. When are you going to win, 2014? Santos value will never be higher than it is right now.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 28, 2011 -> 01:30 PM) I'm telling you right now Quentin with only 2 team bidding on him before the deadline was commanding some serious names, better than you think. It will be even better with more teams in the mix. Quentin hasn't played in more than a month due to injury. Not going to get a better deal for him.

Can't keep Ramirez and Santos in a rebuild.
-
It's time, but goodness the damage that has been done waiting a year is pretty huge. - Committing $56M to Dunn - Not dealing Danks, Thornton, Quentin among others when they were at optimal value. - Wasting a year of Sale's development as a starting pitcher.
-
For me, Alomar is the least appealing of the rumored candidates. The Manny Acta managerial tree versus the Joe Maddon managerial tree.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 07:59 PM) You have a blind obsession with Ozzie/Cowley. And I notice you've taken to Greg Walker recently (i.e. when it leaked out he and KW had a fight or whatever). I wanted Guillen gone. Dick Allen has made some excellent points in defense of Walker that Soxtalk just dismisses. People around here are quick to praise Cooper for Humber. What about Walker's role in Lillibridge turnaround or Morel's second-half? Crickets.
-
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 07:53 PM) He does have a point. I tried to stick up for you a few weeks back. But you're pretty bad. You're worse than DA with Greg Walker. How so?
-
QUOTE (JohnCangelosi @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 07:47 PM) KW seems to want someone he can control as his new manager, so to me this just signifies the new guy in will be a "yes man" to KW, which totally sucks. I am already deflated hearing this news and what this really means Alomar is bad news if you want this organization to embrace a new way of thinking.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 07:25 PM) Sez the guy who posts and quotes his stuff ad naseum.. It's great fun to see you act nutty.
-
I don't see LaRussa taking the job with Williams remaining GM.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 06:53 PM) Sorry Joe, your sources are wrong on this one. You have a weird obsession with Cowley.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 04:54 PM) Again, how do you know this? There have been reports connecting him to the Yankees for years. Hell, he gets interviewed on radio in the 3rd largest city in the country and just signed a 4 year deal to stay there. Pitching coach for the Yankees comes with intense scrutiny. Coop doesn't want that all things being reasonably close to equal.
-
Not thrilled with Alomar. More of the same group think in an organization that needs a breath of fresh air.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 04:42 PM) No, but he probably had one from New York if he wanted it. Coop would prefer the anonymity of the Marlins to the red hot spotlight of the Yankees.
-
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 04:09 PM) Rumor was 4 years for Cooper, which seems like a lot. Coop must've had a similar offer from Florida waiting.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 03:25 PM) How on Earth are you guys rationally coming to this conclusion? I mean, I tried to pour water on the idea that the Braves had the wild card locked up here a page or two ago...but that statement is an enormous stretch from "The Marlins might have a shot at competing for the wild card". It's more of a statement on how bleak the White Sox short-term future looks. For the record, I don't think Guillen makes the playoffs with Marlins much less wins a World Series with them.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 03:21 PM) How much you want to bet that the reason the Sox are getting 2 players involves no tampering allegations ever being filed? When I saw the names, Martinez and Marinez, I thought it was Kenny not wanting to make the Berry/Barry trade mistake again so he asked for two players.
-
Of course it's about the money. The odds of Guillen surviving past 2012 with the Sox were very long. The Marlins have a better chance at a playoff spot than the Sox over the next couple of years in my view which isn't saying much, but it is all about $16M versus $2M.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 02:36 PM) Did the team actually name him anything officially? It's been reported that he was simply told not to show up today. Per Cowley;
