Jon Heyman my belief is tony la russa can have white sox job if he really wants it. that's a big if tho 2 hours ago

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 2, 2011 -> 02:18 PM) I disagree with this too...there's no a priori reason why Alomar or Martinez couldn't take this team next year and put them in the playoffs...if they can get the big salary 3 + Beckham to play like they're supposed to. To contend they'd need a payroll of about $105M next year and everything to go right. Couple that with roughly estimated attendance of 1.8M if they don't contend and probably 2M if they do and that's a big risk. If they hire LaRussa it's a signal that Chairman Reinsdorf would be comfortable with that risk. Rebuild around them.

Jon Heyman #stlcards don't want to lose la russa if it hurts them with pujols. So #chisox won't necessarily have clear path to TLR

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 2, 2011 -> 01:51 PM) At least IMO, it's entirely possible for this team to dump a lot of salary and still remain competitive. I agree with this. If they hire anyone other than LaRussa though, I'd like to see them just go full speed rebuild. In other words, don't plan to contend for a couple of years.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Oct 2, 2011 -> 12:18 PM) Ok, so then they clearly linked to the wrong person..... Do people just hope because he is Maddon's bench coach that he will have learned how to manage?? Maybe and that's a perfectly good enough reason to want him as manager. Heyman makes it sound as if LaRussa is their first choice: Jon Heyman if TLR wants to stay in stl, I still don't see #chisox for francona. Dave martinez among young guys on chi radar

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Oct 2, 2011 -> 11:58 AM) Kinda hard for Pena to be a surprise candidate when Rosenthal already reported the Sox's interest in him and Fisk would be a disaster; the last thing this team needs is a grump old man with ZERO experience running the show. You hear Fisk's name brought up every time there is a managerial opening for the Sox and I don't understand why. Has to be just wishful thinking, right? He'd be a disaster.

Chuck Garfien Hearing of a surprise candidate on Kenny Williams short list for White Sox manager. (@thekapman also reporting this) Chuck Garfien Don't know who the surprise candidate is. @thekapman guesses Tony Pena. Here's mine: Carlton Fisk. 2 hours ago

2011 ALDS Tampa Bay Rays vs. Texas Rangers Thread

With their pitching depth the Rays could put Shields on the trade market this offseason. If the A's do the same with Gio, Danks and Floyd's values take a big hit. -

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 07:53 PM) I would murder someone to have Joe Maddon manage the White Sox. If I'm not mistaken, Maddon was on the Sox short list after Manuel was fired. Same with Scoscia after Bevington was let go. -

2011-12 White Sox off season catch all thread

QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 04:43 PM) Anyone got details? Stone was criticizing Guillen for saying he wouldn't die poor in Chicago and said if your wife can't shop on $2M a year, get a new wife. Real innocent stuff. Overreact by Jr. shocking as that is. -
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 04:27 PM) They always just find a way to fail. That's what I mean. Agreed. Theo may very well be on the downhill side of his career.
-
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 04:40 PM) I have no doubt Marty is Cowley or his guy on 35th is Cowley. He brought him up in defense when we were talking about how Rock is generally spot on and Marty's guy seemed unproven...he mentioned Cowley "breaking" the story on a riff we've all known about for years. Cowley is not my guy on 35th. Still waiting on an example of RockRaines breaking a story here. Amazing how you can pass along info that you hear and get mocked for it.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 03:27 PM) http://mlbbuzz.yardbarker.com/blog/mlbbuzz...8?new_post=true It's nice to see Martinez at the top of the list. As for Pena: bleh. I know Buddy Bell replaced Tony Pena as the Royals manager but I'm not aware of any other connection, thinking that Pena could be his suggestion. Martinez, Alomar, Pena, LaRussa (big time longshot). Seems like this is what we're looking at. Pena played for the Sox in '97 and managed their rookie team in '98. Agree with your rankings of candidates, I'd put Pena as a longer shot than LaRussa. Least I hope he is.

I don't know. Epstein has loaded the Red Sox up with a few bad contracts in recent years. Also, I'd tend to stay away from him and Francona as Boston is a meat grinder and they look like they might be burned out even though Theo is only 37.

White Sox Sign Sergio Santos to 3 year deal
Marty34 replied to Al Lopez's Ghost's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 02:09 PM) You can find nasty left-handed (or right-handed) relievers well after the first round if you're competent. Maybe, but a nasty left-handed reliever as a worse case scenario is absolutely considered a draft choice win. -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 01:34 PM) But we will see. Joe did say several months ago, the Sox would hire a puppet. I believe Daryl Boston is who he mentioned. Looks like Joe will be wrong yet again. In my opinion, if it's Alomar it will be a puppet.

White Sox Sign Sergio Santos to 3 year deal

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 01:29 PM) That'd be a fail in my book. The floor for Sale is a nasty (left-handed) reliever. I don't understand how you could think that would be a fail in all honesty. -
QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 12:07 PM) Most people find it hard to accept that most people in sports are in it for the money. Why do NFL players sign with the Redskins as oppose to signing with the Patriots at league minimum? Yep. How about Dawson wanting to go in to the Hall as a Cub instead of an Expo. All about money Could say the same about Fisk choosing to go in as a Red Sox over the White Sox. Only think that might save him would be the game 6 homer. Not sure it really does though.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 12:26 PM) WTF? The first? Hell, they admitted there was a rift last year on "The Club". And that was the first you heard of it? Come on now. It is my opinion that the dislike of Cowley stems from the fact that he slapped down SoxTalk.
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 12:17 PM) Rockraines talks about moves that are going to be made, and many times he is right. Such as? Cowley was the first to report of the rift between Guillen and Williams. The only reason he is not believed is because he gets his information from Guillen's side exclusively.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 12:13 PM) Rock probably has a better record, and we respect his motivations more than Cowley's. "probably" or "does", which is it? Is this a fact or opinion?
-
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 10:51 AM) I don't know, that seems like it could be coincidental. I'm not saying that you don't, but predicting a move would go a long way in convincing people. Nobody on this board believes Cowley, but RockRaines oh man he's right on. There is no logic here. Bottom line is believe who you want to believe.

For everyone's edification: Opinion. Fact. Opinion.

QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 11:06 AM) Look at your posts in many threads where you are called out, and 95% of the time, you make claims, with no evidence. Hell, look at the Dodge thread for examples. Going forward, I'll make it easier for everyone by prefacing my opinions with "This is my opinion . . ."
