QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 02:37 PM) I pray Mark goes to the NL to a team that doesn't face us. That is a sad day when he pitches in the Cell for another team. It's amazing we will be willing to pay Adam Dunn and Rios and not Buehrle. Truly amazing. How anybody can buy season tickets to an organization that would do this is beyond me. Do what Milkman does ... only go to games if you can score free tickets. Let's see the Sox explain that one to their fans. Paying Dunn n Rios and letting Mark walk. Wow. If you are a baseball fan and can afford to buy tickets, it's stupid not to.
-
It's very important for '12 and onward to get Dunn hitting. He needs to be playing every day and hitting in front of Konerko to see if he can get pitches he can handle.

B.J. Upton claimed.

When should we hear about the guys we put on waivers yesterday?

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 26, 2011 -> 07:04 PM) Have we seen Quentin's last AB in a Sox jersey? Let's hope not because his trade value will be next to nothing. Not that it hasn't taken a major hit since the deadline. To me it's inexcusable that he wasn't moved at the deadline and that Jackson was. When you have Viciedo in the wings as a replacement, it's darn near a firable offense.

Which of the underperfomers will figure it out in 2012?
Marty34 replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Rios will have the best bounce back because he's the best athlete of the three. I really fear for Dunn. I don't know that he's hit 30 balls hard this year, bat is incredibly slow. -
The Sox just have to weather the Peavy/Rios/Dunn contract storm as best they can. Those three along with Buehrle and Konerko should be viewed as the core going into next year. You have to build around that group for the next 2-3 years. That leaves a lot of holes with not a lot of money to fill them.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 25, 2011 -> 12:54 PM) Thornton is much easier to justify sending out versus Alexei if we are going to be in that dreaded middle ground. I'd rather see Paul Konerko get dealt versus Alexei, just because of contract, age, and ease of replacement. If we are going to be in that middle ground? Guess where we are now.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 25, 2011 -> 12:37 PM) It just is a happy coincidence that it turns up with the people you don't like? Come on man, at least be honest. You're wrong about everything in that statement. You tied your own record.

QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Aug 25, 2011 -> 12:31 PM) Hey Jake...Shut Up already! Yep. Have the decency to keep quiet when you can't get anyone out.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 25, 2011 -> 12:06 PM) I think it is more of a cutesy thing to try to demean the people he doesn't like. Wrong again.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 25, 2011 -> 11:30 AM) I may be completely off base and I realize his title actually IS chairman, but do you constantly refer to him as Chairman Reinsdorf in order to equate him with the likes of Mao Zedong or something? Force of habit.
-
Chairman Reinsdorf made Hahn the highest paid assistant G.M. in baseball. You have to believe Hahn would give him right of first refusal even though he has an out in his contract for the Cubs.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 24, 2011 -> 07:26 PM) KW tried that approach in 2007, it not only didn't work it wound up costing him even more money. Next year it will be Crain in the 7th, Reed in the 8th, Santos in the 9th. The bullpen won't suffer without Thornton.
-
Maybe we'll claim Edwin Jackson to replace Peavy in the rotation.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 24, 2011 -> 08:29 AM) In exchange for saving a whopping $5 million, less than 4% of this team's total payroll? $10M savings.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 08:51 PM) Quite frankly, trading Thornton is not only a bad baseball decision, it's a bad financial decision. The only way they should even consider it is if they want to blow the whole thing up, and with as many pieces as there are coming back, they may as well give a half-assed effort to give this group of players one more shot under different management. Thornton's a left-handed setup guy who will give you 60 IP. I'll take my chances with those 60 innings being pitched by Reed/Santiago.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 07:29 PM) So people want Sale in the rotation and Thornton on another team. If you want Sale in the rotation Thornton has to stay. If you want Thornton gone, you better find another decent lefty for the bullpen or it will be a long year next year. You're overvaluing Thornton's 60 innings pitched.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 12:17 PM) Then there's no reason to move him now as opposed to the offseason unless you're given a good offer for him. Now, you can deal with 1 team. In the offseason, you can deal with 28 teams. 28 teams won't take that contract though. Yankees and Red Sox may take a pass until trade deadline of next year and if Thornton is declining you won't be able to trade him. Too much risk, not enough reward for keeping him past 8/31.
-
What was Branch Rickey's saying? Trade a player a year too early than a year too late. The return he brings more than likely isn't going to be substantial given the year he's had, his age, and his contract.
-
QUOTE (SoxAce @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 10:29 AM) I'll give you the cheaper argument. Lets just hope someone can take Paul Konerko next year then. He'll be 36, so obviously he's bound to suck with that contract. Apples and oranges my friend. That said, what's the offer for Konerko?
-
QUOTE (SoxAce @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 10:14 AM) He's been the best LH setup man in the game the last three years. One mediocre season and suddenly he's got a terrible contract? This isn't a guy who is all of a sudden taken a dip in velocity or losing his stuff. He's had some s***ty luck. In fact, his numbers across (H/9, BB/9, SO/9, WHIP, etc.) are almost identical to his 07 numbers. He was probably done then too. Matt definitely strikes me as a guy who will probably have his fastball for a long time in this game. (ala Billy Wagner, and no I'm not comparing them as players/careers) I think he's a solid pick to rebound next year just like he did in 08 even if it's not with us. He was worth keeping in 2007 because 1.) he was younger, 2.) cheaper.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 09:37 AM) Here we go again, Marty/Joe. Yesterday you had problems with math. Today it's names. What will tomorrow bring?
-
I think you guys are infatuated with his 96 mph fastball. He's had an up and down year to be kind and I don't think the market for a 34 y.o. setup guy who is owed $12M over the next two years will be anywhere near what you think it will be.
-
Thornton is the most interesting waiver candidate the Sox have. Question is if he were to go on waivers and a team claimed him, but didn't offer the value in return you thought he was worth, do you make the trade anyway to get rid of the contract or do you wait for the offseason? I'd be tempted to make the trade now instead of waiting because $12M owed to a setup man is probably a thing of the past in today's ecomomy.
