  1. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 02:33 PM) Uh...? They are acquiring a 24 year old 3Bman who is a top 5 hitter in the league; how are they exactly giving their future away? And they are trading their best LHP away so they can get one of the most marketable players in the entire game and a pretty damn good pitcher as well in Dontrelle Willis. You are acting as if they are seemingly just giving Maybin, Miller, and whoever else they'd have to give up away and not getting anything in return; quite the contrary is true, when they are getting cornerstone players of a franchise. To me, it sounds like they are trying to build an offensive powerhouse that will be around for years and years. Agreed, but Rogers is OLD and Miller, well, isn't. Perfect replacement because this may be the last year for Rogers. Plus, just like the Angels fans didn't like dealing away O-Cab because of what he brings to the clubhouse, replacing Inge might do the same thing. I'm just saying that the Tigers have a good core NOW...dealing away Miller and Maybin, to me, would mess up their chances in the near future.
  2. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 02:24 PM) Fixed. Glad to see 90 games of at-bats is worth making an inference from, however. I'll keep that in mind. Fine...but you didn't back up your statement...you just said it. Give me a reason and maybe it'll make sense. At least I tried to back up my reasoning...
  3. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 01:45 PM) Ahh yes, because statistical inferences can be made from 92 games. I'll also await your release of your theory that where a hitter bats in the order carries any predictive value or, further, that having a "leadoff hitter" makes a damn difference at all. Till then, keep believing useless s***. Sorry, I backed up my reasoning...you made a blanket statement. My point is, he's not a spring chicken and he's been tried at leadoff. But, he's been better as a #2 hitter. Maybe he's more comfortable there. A "leadoff hitter" does make a damn bit of difference...if your manager wants a "leadoff hitter" and not someone that can be ok at it. Ozzie has said that's what he wants. O-Cab is not that guy.
  4. QUOTE(quickman @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 01:37 PM) Just because I disagree with his moves doesn't mean I am right. I think he targeted Hunter, he missed, his fall back options are limited, Hunter of course was the key, he brings star status, good D, and a nice bat, you could then live with owens leading off although I would rather have a drunk freel. He signed Uribe, which he mis calculated, and he over paid for linebrink who I think will get worse not better, but that needs to play out. Quentin is anice pick up but he may not pan out, you don't know, and to have these holes for a team that is old and suppose to go for it, I question the strategy. Now your right he is not done, but I think he will appease fans by getting Rowand which is no big deal quite frankly. I suppose we are hinging this season on Quentin and Floyd. Two big risks as it stands now. I agree with all of this except for Quentin because you say he might not pan out. Well, Carter might not either. Then it's just a trade. NOt a good trade or a bad trade, just a trade. Things hardly ever work out exactly the way you want them to...just ask the Cubs. They got their men last year, but didn't win nuthin'. Same with the Yankees and even the Sox. The thing I will always give Kenny is his willingness to try. He really doesn't care what we think...he makes the moves that he thinks makes the team better or clears payroll to make the team better. He's going to swing and miss, but all GMs do...even Schuerholz misses occasionally (sorry Pratt).
  5. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 01:17 PM) That makes no sense, and it's scary that people actually believe something so silly. Really? According to Baseball Reference (BA/OBP/SLG/OPS): Batting 1st: .245/.283/.394/.677 in 92 games Batting 2nd: .290/.341/.402/.743 in 421 games Enjoy the crow.
  6. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 01:07 PM) O'Cab Not a good place for him...he's a better #2. Just don't ask me who would be a good leadoff hitter instead, cuz I don't have an answer.
  7. QUOTE(EvilJester99 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 01:05 PM) Fukudome here we come!! *Fingers crossed* Plus, it would be nice to beat out the Cubs!
  8. QUOTE(ballyb11 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 01:05 PM) Thanks. It's not sarcasm. I'd like to hear reasoning for the Levine dislike. ^^^ *opening can of worms*
  9. QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 12:34 PM) It seems surprising the Astros would give him up so soon, as I know they're trying to get Fuentes from the Rockies, and the Rockies love Burke. TIFWIW, the ESPN Winter Meetings Blog suggests that the Astros don't want to pay Fuentes. And with the loss of Kaz...they are thinking about moving Atkins to 2B. If that's the case, maybe the Rockies would be a good place for Crede? Maybe for Spilborghs, Sullivan or Tavares?
  10. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 10:34 PM) Rosenhaus has been seen at Halas hall a bit more lately and that could very well be due to Briggs and the Bears. I know Briggs recently said as long as the Bears offer him a fair deal he will retire a Bear. Briggs and/or Tommie Harris. With Urlacher's arthritic back, it's imperative to get Briggs signed.
  11. QUOTE(quickman @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 11:30 AM) Correct, KW has come out and said we are going for it, and mis manages the whole process. he mis calculated everything so far and has overpaid for the talent he secured. I too like the quenten trade but not for team who is going for it this year! I think he is a nice pick up, but nothing to bank your season on. He has totally lost me. Alrighty...it was nice reading your posts. I hear the Rays are looking for some fans...
  12. QUOTE(Melissa1334 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 11:20 AM) that would be bad...incumbent 3b inge...well they did give him an extension just this year..both cabrera and willis to det? i highy doubt that. unless they wana trade theyre whole farm If they want to deal away Miller and Maybin, go ahead. And if they get rid of Inge at 3B because of it, go ahead. That would be the future and the heart of the team...and for that, the Tigers won't win. Sounds like they are trying to win within the next two years to me. I wouldn't trade my best LHP because they have Kenny Rogers, that's just dumb. He's like 87 years old.
  13. I saw Burke play for the Round Rock Express when they were AA and AAA. Burke is a smart baseball player that got dicked around by the Astros. Although it's not entirely their fault. He was blocked at 2B by Biggio who deserved to retire when he wanted to retire. Then, he was blocked when they put Berkman in the outfield. Then he was blocked by Pence. He's never really had the opportunity to have a full-time job. Even when they moved Biggio to CF for him, they would still rotate around. At best, Burke could be like Eckstein with better OBP. He is a smart base runner. Plus 2b defense. Good bunter and (although I hate to say this) a grinder. If the White Sox want smart ballplayers, you could do much worse than Chris Burke. Go get 'im, Kenny.
  14. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 07:40 PM) Winter 02 Greenhorn...
  15. QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 10:31 PM) The Cards hate Reyes right now. You think they would give him up for one year of a Boras client that's coming off of back surgery? Even if they hate him???
  16. QUOTE(gosox41 @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 10:25 PM) Then what happens to the Torri Hunter money. What if he had accepted the $15 mill pe year offer? Bob Sox don't get Carlos Quentin.
  17. QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 10:29 PM) Anthony Reyes. I don't think that will be enough for Reyes.
  18. The Cards could use Spezio as a stopgap...but who would the Sox want from the Cards?
  19. QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 10:18 PM) PLEASE, NO CAPUANO! Coop'll fix 'em!
  20. Maybe Capuano for Crede? I'd do that trade straight up or throw in a lower-level prospect...somewhere in AA ball.
  21. QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 2, 2007 -> 10:30 PM) Lots of rumblings that Cubs might sign Fukudome in next few days. There were rumblings about the Sox and Torii Hunter, too.
  22. I like what Herbstreit said the other day...either all conferences have Championship Games or none of them. If there aren't two divisions, then the top two teams play. I hate to use the word 'fair' but it isn't fair. Mizzou definitely got jobbed. Illinois probably shouldn't be in the BCS games, but the Rose Bowl has always been Big10/Pac10 and they are the Grandaddy of them all...so, I can't use that as an excuse. Also, the Cotton Bowl has the Big 12 runner-up tie-in, so, send an email to the Big 12 commissioner...that's all you can do.. But I agree, Mizzou got jobbed.
  23. Illinois might win just for the fact that everyone is thinking that USC is going to blow them out. USC might just fall asleep, a la Stanford. And ChWRock...it's screwed, not jewed. Jackass.
  24. QUOTE(Chombi @ Dec 2, 2007 -> 06:35 PM) Please explain how we have a good team? We have a decent team, who if they all can perform as we hope, can be .500. That logic isn't right to approach a season. This team has had 2 good halves in the last 3 years. 1st half of 05' and the first half of 06'. Not much else. maybe our barely over .500 in the 2nd half of 05'. They're old, injury prone, and most of all...unreliable. Maybe you can say MB is reliable. JV isn't. One good season for a bad ballclub doesn't automatically make him a lock for repeat success. No one has a clue what Contreras will do and obviously our kids in the rotation are uncertain. You can't be good with no rotation. Our bp (although I think will be better) isn't a lock for improvement. Linebrink has been pathetic his last 30+ appearances and could turn out to be exactly what teams feared, a product of Petco. Offensively. Konerko should turn it around but who knows. He seems to have an off year every few. Dye WILL NOT REPEAT 05!!! So we need to stop treating him like he is that same superstar. He is an aging, injury prone OF with 30-100 numbers if he remains healthy. Thome I am uncomfortable with because of age and injury liability, but assuming he is healthy and since he is a DH, minor injuries shouldn't harm his production. We have no leadoff hitter. Owens, Fields, Richar have proved little.Why we are expecting them to be good players is beyond me. We can hardly deal any of them for a bag of balls. The team is just dangerously bad. There are more con's then pro's with this team. We won with our core. Had a chance in 06 and blew it. In today's game you need to flip it and start again. Time to blow it up! We do appreciate our farm and thats the problem. Incase you haven't noticed. Every other team in baseball are the ones who don't appreciate it and something tells me that they may be right. Unless your 1 -2 moves are acquiring a guy like Crawford/Cabrera, followed by a deal for Johan/Bedard...there isn't much that can save this team. As a loyal Sox fan, I understand the pessimism, but can you truly say that Owens, Fields and Richar have proved little? Owens improved, Richar only played 2 months at the major league level and Fields had good power and a good eye at the plate, even with a lot of Ks. I don't expect them to be perennial all-stars, but I do expect them to improve in '08. And if they don't, fine, see ya. But, one part of one year doesn't make a career. This can go for Danks as well. First year in the bigs. Floyd, I agree with you. Contreras is a crapshoot. But, I think the Sox are built to win if they some of their players have career years and the rest have a league average year. What I don't understand is why last year isn't considered an anomoly, but '05 was. That's what ticks me off about some people on this board. The team is bad, it's expected...but if the team is good, it's an anomoly. And to answer the question posed. I say 2...1 minor, 1 major.
