  1. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 21, 2007 -> 05:43 PM) Bear in mind, I had thought I read that Ramirez was expecting to have a shot at starting before signing with someone. Therefore, KW must have at least promised him that shot. Maybe not a guarantee, but at least a reasonable chance. Anyone else remember seeing that somewhere? Also, don't the Sox have two other SS in the system? I know one is 16, but is the other one closer to the bigs? BTW, I love the signing...and it gives Contreras a friend again!
  2. You must be Ribbied for her pleasure!!! Yeah, I went there and I'm very ashamed! Congrats and Thomas Rubarb is a wonderful name!
  3. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 20, 2007 -> 04:35 PM) The biggest paper I had to write in college (Poli Sci major) was about the American Indians, the Dawes Act and Micro-federalism. I'll try to be very brief... Most of those Lakota are probably living on federal reservations. On those reservations, the tribes basically have home rule, but under federal auspices. The state and local governments have near-zero say over anything. And the feds are, in theory, bound by treaties and laws including the Dawes act, that severely limit what they can do there. It happens to be that those AmerInds could become citizens, and are given birthright citizenship by nature of being born in the U.S. But, they really can have great autonomy within the reservation if they choose. Now, for those off the reservation, they are US citizens with normal domicile, but they do have special protections under the federal laws. They however ARE subject to the normal state and local laws like everyone else, in that instance. And many states and localities have special laws for certain tribes or blood level-groups as well, and hunting exceptions, and so on. So... deported? No, because deportation would represent the acknowledgement of some prior or other citizenship, which they do not have in any international sense. Leave the country? They COULD, I suppose, go way up north into that vast swath of what was the Northwest Territories in Canada, which now belongs to native peoples. It is, for many purposes, an independent nation. Not recognized by many other nations, but sufficiently home-ruled to stake a claim as such. Canada gave them huge bandwidth to do as they please up there. I suppose they could take a long walk. Errr...I think they would be adverse to that. Didn't work so well for them the last time. And Tex...it's Crazy HORSE not Crazy ASS. Hee Haw and Merry Christmas!
  4. QUOTE(thedoctor @ Dec 20, 2007 -> 12:15 PM) agree. zook's from loudonville and went to miami so he's really familiar with the area. his first few recruiting classes have had a distinctive ohio flavor. brian gamble is one guy who's really shown something already as a true frosh. there's plenty of others and supposedly they also have a verbal from top 09 defensive end melvin fellows. Three hotbeds of talent that he (or his staff) has ties to: Ohio, Florida and Maryland. That's awesome. If he can only get into Texas, they'll be good for awhile.
  5. If they get Roberts...they are going to start looking like the Yankees. Go out, get name players, throw them on the field and see what happens. Of course, it didn't work so well for them the last few years.
  6. QUOTE(JohnCangelosi @ Dec 20, 2007 -> 02:19 PM) Doesn't anyone else see how Prior's body (and notably, legs) have shrunk considerably since the end of the 2004 season??? Don't you guys think he is one of the guys who was clearly juicing and now has nothing left since he can't juice any longer?? The guy has nothing left. The only guy that shrunk more after the 04 season was Giambi. Colon or Garcia's probability of success vs. Prior in 2008 is about a million percent better, and we all know what big risks those two guys are. Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez says hello.
  7. QUOTE(BaseballNick @ Dec 20, 2007 -> 12:02 PM) What's there to collect? You can't just keep a player solely based on pride if he can be your biggest bargaining chip on the trade market. This team has holes; I think we can all agree on that much. Kenny can tweak the roster to make this team a competitor for maybe another year, but that's only if a lot of things fall into place. I think it makes more sense to deal Mark if he can yield the White Sox two or three good, young players. Mark is a good pitcher, he's a hero on the South Side, and there's no player on the roster that I like more than him...but he's not a world beater. Baseball is a business. As we saw this past month or so, FAs aren't out to do us any favors. The free agent route is a pretty risky, not to mention, expensive way to address your team's needs, and it burnt us this year. Trading Mark can help "fix" years of poor drafts and give us the depth we're in pretty desperate need of at the moment. And when he invokes his no trade clause...that'll be the end of that. I don't think Cincinnati is the kind of place he would say yes to.
  8. Hawk has been in baseball long enough (playing, front office, booth) that he deserves to go out on his own accord. So get used to it fellas, either he dies in the booth or backs off slowly to play golf. Otherwise, it ain't happenin'.
  9. Zook finished 4th in AP coach of the year poll behind the winner, Mark Mangino, Gary Pinkel and June Jones. Um...what? I mean, I can understand Mangino. But Zook had a +7 wins and dealt with some real crap seasons for the last few years to turn this team from 2 wins to 9 wins and a BCS bowl. I don't know, I think Zook should have AT LEAST been 2nd ahead of Pinkel and Jones.
  10. QUOTE(iamshack @ Dec 19, 2007 -> 11:30 AM) Yep. The Orioles supposedly want 4 prospects for him, at least one which is Grade A, which I am not sure we have (however they would probably consider Fields = to that). Which means we are probably talking a package of Fields, Danks/Gio, DLS, and one other pitcher, probably one of the Egbert/Broadway/Russell crew.... Couple that with Bedard's seemingly lackluster attitude, his desire to possibly play in his native Canada, and his Zambrano-esque contract in a few years, and I don't think it's worth it. If you could get Roberts for something along the lines of Danks+Richar+Uribe, I think I would be willing to do so, only because Roberts could plug such a hole for this team. What hole? Leadoff or 2B? Or both? Depending on what Richar does in Spring Training, I might be willing to give him both roles cuz he's younger and cheaper and only played for 2 months or so.
  11. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Dec 19, 2007 -> 02:42 PM) I can not stand DJ with or without Hawk. He is absolutely horrible. I haven't heard anyone as bad as him. He made Chip Caray tolerable. You heard Josh Lewin? Or the Astros play-by-play? C'mon, DJ isn't the greatest, but he's not the worst there is. And Hawk and Stoney would be fun to listen to only to see if they can fit both egos into the booth!
  12. QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Dec 18, 2007 -> 06:34 PM) if we can get both Bedard and Roberts i would put us back up there with the contenders. Yea the whole Roberts steroid thing is kind of disturbing but it was 5 years ago and his numbers the past few years are still damn good. And KW has been wanting Bedard the last 3 seasons... I think KW doesn't have much of a choice than to take a serious look at this.. he added a veteran in Cabrera and we already have Dye, THome and Konerko so its not like the team will rebuild next year. This would make a lot of Sox fans happy and would potentially turn an offseason disaster into a very good offseason. Obviously its pure speculation and nothing more at this point... but im sure KW has something else up his sleeve before Christmas that will shock many of us. He knows damn well that the team constructed right now is not going anywhere next year... Just don't hold your breath for that Christmas deadline.
  13. What...we couldn't get two Cabrera's so we have to go for two Orlando's??? /green
  14. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Dec 17, 2007 -> 10:08 AM) I BOUGHT SHINER BOCK IN CHICAGO Shiner Bock is good stuff...so is Shiner Blonde. Do they have that up yonder?
  15. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Dec 17, 2007 -> 03:23 PM) Yes I'm sure um fans were wondering who tress was when we hired him, but at the same time were sad to see cooper go. If drod turns out to be one of the greats, ill admit I didn't see it. Some of the reasons that I'm happier they hired him: his 8-11 record against ranked teams. I've seen his team blow more big games than win them. Also he won't be able to sneak in juco transfers and questionable players into um and its lofty standards academically. He also has shown a lack of defense on his teams. Um has always been offensively explosive, and that shouldn't change much, but their defense may suffer. I also love that he's bringing in the spread option, because as a lot of people who aren't osu or um fans don't realize, usually the third weekend in nov is the only week that matters, I'm encouraged that their qb may be a little beat up by then. Also the team will need a few years to adjust to his style of play, with osu rebuilding this year, and illinois improving, he could be in for some growing pains, and as he's shown by considering other programs before, and by leaving his alma mater, he could have one foot out the door by then. Fianlly his complete ignorance of michigan tradition and the best rivalry in sports. As an osu fan, I've seen the perils of bringing an outsider in and their lack of success against the team from up north, rr has never been a part of anything the magnitude of osu v michigan. Those are some of my reasons, and he still could be the second coming of bo, but on the surface I don't see it. I apologize for my puntuation as well for I am typing from the road on my blackberry. Also nowhere is it written except on mich boards that pryor is expected to go to mich, in fact he had a pretty negative comment about rr on scout and his job hopping tendencies. Are you sayin' the Backyard Brawl pales in comparison to OSU/UM??? And I hope Saban and Petrino get kicked back down to high school football...in Northern Alaska. Jackasses.
  16. QUOTE(WCSox @ Dec 17, 2007 -> 05:05 PM) Ah, I forgot that it was coming up in May already. I wouldn't mind KW dealing him if a really nice package of prospects were dangled in front of him. Still, I'm not sure what a good-but-not-great power-hitting 1B on the wrong side of 30 who has $36 million left on his deal is worth in terms of prospects. My feeling is that he isn't moved before then. Not saying they should, but he's still young, only 32 I believe, and yes, he has a bad hip, but if he can work on that during the offseasons, he might be able to fight it off a little. Also, $12mil/year is relatively cheap for a good middle of the order hitter. Some team might want him for DH? They aren't going to get a lot of top notch prospects, but if they can get a good package that helps to restock our system with mayb one major league ready player and one that's a year away plus a bunch of lower level prospects, and by bunch, I mean 2-3 depending on how good they are, I would be inclined to take a good hard look.
  17. QUOTE(vandy125 @ Dec 17, 2007 -> 11:12 AM) Poor defense? Are you kidding me? Konerko has some of the softest hands at 1B. I can't imagine how many errors Uribe would have had if someone else was there last year. It looks like you are throwing as many things out there as you can to make your point (even if the stuff is not true), and it really takes away from the point you are trying to make. He has good hands for throws over to first, but he has HORRIBLE range.
  18. I don't think anyone can say anything about Danks at this point of his career. He's had one nearly full season in the majors. I think he has the ability and cojones to be a 1 or a 2, but really, how many #1 are there? Just because you are the best pitcher on your team, doesn't make you a true #1, right? Floyd...I'm not even going to speculate. I'd love to see him be a #3, if he can, but would be happy to be decent as a #5.
  19. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 02:10 PM) He should be first ballot. It is pretty evident that practically any player that actually had better offensive seasons in the past 5-10 years were using performance enhancing substances. I've been known to rip Frank but he deserves a lot of love for being an ethical ball player and one of the most amazing offensive players to ever play the game (I'm going to start saying that a lot because Thomas' accomplishments were really lessened by the results of the steroid driven players). Wasn't Frank the one who spearheaded the effort a few years ago where the Sox refused to take the tests to guarantee the 5% level for testing? He may have been a little salty at times, but he's still arguably the best pure hitter to play for the White Sox, ever.
  20. I'm sure it's been said before in this thread but...JIM PARQUE??? JIM PARQUE??? Seriously???
  21. Crap, I'm late...again... Happy Birthday! May the dead come back and vote for you!!!!
  22. It IS the New York Post...I laughed, but I feel guilty about it. LOL
  23. I doubt the Sox will sign just any ol' OF just because they got snaked on others.
  24. What's the over/under on questions that angry fans are going to ask until you fly across the dais and take a swing?
  25. QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 06:45 PM) http://www.withleather.com/post.phtml?pk=1894 Wowee wow wow wow!
