  1. QUOTE(Benchwarmerjim @ Nov 22, 2007 -> 07:29 PM) one of the designs I saw was interesting. Looked like giant pirate sails from the blog DRaysBay http://www.draysbay.com/story/2007/11/18/93311/068 The Roman Colosseum called...and the lions are on the way (once they finish eating Christians).
  2. QUOTE(iamshack @ Nov 24, 2007 -> 07:37 PM) You honestly don't think that is a better deal than Willits/Mathis/Kendrick? Kendrick is the best player in either offer- and we can't change that- but Fields is no slouch himself, and I think those other pieces are far more valuable than Mathis/Willits....enough to make up for the difference between Kendrick and Fields and then some. Sooooo...who plays 3B if Crede's back gets all sketchy or he can't come back at all? No Fields. I don't think the Sox have the horses to get Crawford, unless the Rays REALLY want to deal him.
  3. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Nov 24, 2007 -> 05:31 PM) I have no problem with the offer, I just don't think it gets off of the ground. Maybe not, but you can put it out there.
  4. QUOTE(Lemon_44 @ Nov 24, 2007 -> 06:12 PM) I think the guy KW is after is Bobby Abreu. They have been rumored to have interest in the past and the Sox/Yanks have been trading partners in the past. Maybe the Sox make a big deal with the Yanks and acquire Abreu and Melky Cabrera. Abreu and Damon would be more likely than Abreu and Melky. But, I think Abreu is staying. Matsui in LF, Cabrera in CF and Abreu in RF. With Duncan as the 4th outfielder. Also, I hope to whoever you pray to that we don't get Damon.
  5. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Nov 23, 2007 -> 03:02 PM) f***. Colorado 65, Nebraska 51. I guess that box and 1 defense works pretty well..... I'm sorry, what? This was a FOOTBALL game? Um...oh...yeeeeeaaaaaaah.
  6. Mariotti is maddening AND popular because he is reactionary. He writes what he thinks Chicago sports fans are thinking, not the actual situation. I, for one, wanted Hunter, but NOT for $18 mil a year. That's just dumb.
  7. Happy Thanksgiving to all!
  8. QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Nov 21, 2007 -> 10:06 AM) If the Sox are serious about Hunter, I think they should try to compete with the Texas offer by front-loading the contract. Give Hunter more than $14M in 2008 and 2009 and keep the contract length at 5 years. That way, he'll be paid the most when he's most valuable (and when the Sox payroll can handle it the best) and they won't be on the hook for Hunter when he's 39. Awesome idea, hitless.
  9. QUOTE(BamaDoc @ Nov 21, 2007 -> 12:26 PM) I like the idea because he is young and should not require a lot in trade. Specificly, he hit about 100 points higher vs lefties while both Richar and Owens hit righties better by 30 plus points. Depth at a couple of positions as well as possible plattoon player or just give day off vs tougher lefties. Agreed. I watched him play for the Round Rock Express a few years ago and he is the definition of a grinder...but in a good way. He's an excellent base runner...decent fielder...and a good contact hitter. I would compare him to Eckstein a couple of years ago, before the back problems. I would love to get him, if the Sox think Richar isn't the answer.
  10. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Nov 20, 2007 -> 02:05 AM) Reda was better than both of them, but Illinois cleaned up in the awards so I can't complain. And would somebody like to explain to me why MIKE HART (consensus Big 10 2nd team) is a Doak Walker award finalist over consensus Big 10 offensive player of the year Rashard Mendenhall, who unlike Hart stayed healthy for his team all season and generally had a better season? Talk about pathetic. Reputation. also, Leman outplayed Laurinitis in their head-to-head matchup and I believe lead the Big 10 in tackles for something like 18 weeks and he still wasn't a finalist for the Butkus award. Big time program + reputation + love from the media = National awards.
  11. QUOTE(Markbilliards @ Nov 20, 2007 -> 10:33 AM) This doesn't say much about what is specifically wrong with Upton, it just states he can't play defense. http://tsf.waymoresports.thestar.com/thest...player.cgi?3181 He could be a center fielder for the Sox though. However we'd have to give up a ton for him so I don't think this is a practical idea. If we ever did get him I'd poop my pants. I hope we don't get him then...for your mom's sake.
  12. QUOTE(BearSox @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 05:00 PM) when you put it that way... Of course, if they have Richar, Owens and Fields...plus, Floyd and Danks...or Gio/Broadway/Masset, etc. It's a pretty good mix. Still a lot of oldies, but there's still some youth with potential.
  13. QUOTE(elrockinMT @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 12:54 PM) Garland for Cabrera even up is ridiculous and doesn't do anything positive for this team as far as I am concerned. We have two short stops now and are minus an 18 game winner. I have a real problem with trading quality pitching for a SS. But, it's done and if we don't win maybe KW should be looking for a new job in 2009. We have a solid middle infielder/number 2 hitter and don't have to deal with the inconsistency of Uribe. At some point, we gotta let the kids try to pitch. Danks is a year older, Floyd has one last shot to do something with his career and one of Gio/Broadway/Masset/Sisco/Phillips/will get 5th starter. I'm not thrilled with the trade, but I'm not totally against it.
  14. QUOTE(zenryan @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 12:48 PM) when KW is fired, the organization should really come to this site and look for the next GM. I sincerely doubt Kenny will be fired. Reinsdorf luvs him.
  15. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 10:42 AM) Its nice to see IU going bowling, but its going to take alot to take down the big ten title. Especially in the next few seasons. I'm not saying they are going to win the big ten, but they are improving....
  16. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 18, 2007 -> 12:49 PM) Just woke up from the Big Ten championship celebration. 3 titles in a row and the favorite for it next year. Nothing is better than dominating Michigan and forcing their coach into retirement. That was probably the easiest and least in doubt victory in the Tressel era. The battle of the RB's with ankle injuries was about as one-sided as it could be, and the big guys both on defense and offense pushed Michigan back all day. I think Jake Long had more sacks of Henne than most of the d line of OSU. Good bye LLLLLLoyd, this buckeye will miss you. You smell that??? That's Illinois and Indiana getting better with their Old Oaken Bucket and Sweet Sioux Tomahawk at the ready.
  17. QUOTE(greg775 @ Nov 18, 2007 -> 08:34 PM) It's pretty obvious Fields is a DH type. Whether he can blast homers at the rate of a Paulie/Thome remains to be seen. He is a butcher at 3B and in LF. Sox pitchers are not gonna be happy at all the errors at 3b. Butcher in LF...yes. Butcher at 3B...no. He's ok, he's not Chavez, Lowell or Brooks Robinson...or even Crede, but he's adequate. And he should get better. As long as he can make routine plays...and the occasional spectacular play, I'll take him for 3 more years over Crede for (maybe) one.
  18. QUOTE(greg775 @ Nov 17, 2007 -> 05:29 PM) Southside I understand what you are saying, but to get scraps for Crede is absurd. Keep him and trade him midway through the season if we are not vying for the division title. Giving away Crede for lousy prospects is a dumb dumb move. KW needs to start making some trades that help this team now. His trades are growing old, ala Iguchi. Trading him at the trading deadline for half a year isn't going to net you much either. Everyone knows Boras is his agent and GMs don't do the rent-a-player like they used to. They want to think they have at least a chance of re-signing the player. Now is the best chance, imho, to trade Crede. Yes, he's coming off back surgery, but you can use him for a year and see if he's worth it, if not, buh-bye. I'm talking about another team, here, not the Sox. The Sox have a younger, cheaper replacement. Someone who could take over for Paulie in a few years. Just get what you can out of Crede and move on with Fields as your 3B.
  19. QUOTE(Jimbo's Drinker @ Nov 16, 2007 -> 11:25 AM) I personally dont see ku or mu going to play lsu...but if they are there, i think your underestimating the ability of reesing and daniels. bmags and Jimbo...I thought OSU would dominate last year with all that they had. And they didn't...obviously. I just think that Mizzou doesn't have the defense. I don't think KU will beat both Mizzou AND OU. And Oklahoma has some QB troubles. Sam Bradford is going to be real good, but he's had a tough time on the road this year. I could certainly be wrong...but my guess is LSU beats all three of these teams.
  20. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 16, 2007 -> 02:43 PM) Schoenweis was traded to the Sox from the Halos in a deal involving Danny Glover. He then, IIRC, decided to get real angry about the fact that he wasn't starting, got a starting job, and got hurt. All while on steroids. It's a wonderful story. But he was getting too old for this s***. I think you meant Gary Glover.
  21. QUOTE(Jimbo's Drinker @ Nov 16, 2007 -> 09:55 AM) game will be sold out. next question. By how much do you think KU or Mizzou would lose to LSU? My guess is at least 3 touchdowns. Sorry.
  22. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 14, 2007 -> 09:50 AM) Oh Jeez. Just when everyone stopped. You really really think ILL is the better team? You really do? Illinois ranks 8th in the Big Ten in total offense. You really think that ILL's powerhouse offense just overwhelmed the best defense in country unlike the 5 better offensive teams in the big ten that OSU beat and beat badly? You think that Ill's defense was just so overpowering for OSU that the QB with the highest rating in the big ten couldnt handle it? Come on man. Ill played about the best they can play and OSU had their worst game of the season. Bar none, they both play their game, OSU wins big. They didnt, and some of the reason is that ILL game planned very well for them, but alot of it was their personal errors and coaching on both ends of the field. Im sorry if you feel that is a negative comment towards ILL, but frankly they won, and they get bragging rights. But I dont think there are many people around the country who will make a mistake and say that the best team won. Illinois has played OSU tough the past, what, 5 years? There is no way that OSU wins big. They would probably win, but not big. What happened last year? 17-10. That's what. Sorry Rock, but I honestly think that OSU would have won, but they would have squeeked by, like they have in the past. Some teams have a nemesis, a team they find it very hard to beat, and for OSU, it's Illinois.
  23. QUOTE(Shadows @ Nov 13, 2007 -> 06:52 PM) No I wasn't joking.. Illinois abused the Ohio State defense all night, they only avg giving up what 65 yards.. I don't QUITE remember, but I think Illinois rushed for a wee bit more yards than 65. And the 4th quarter drive that iced it, where Ohio State couldn't stop a 3rd and long to save their life. I do think Illinois dominated that game. And the way OSU defense played the other games of this year compared to what Illinois did to them says enough. OSU wasn't dominated, this was a case of Illinois having to play a perfect game (no turnovers, 1 penalty), OSU not playing their usual (260 rushing yards) and some luck (the fumble). I think Illinois still had a very good chance of winning without the missed fumble, but either way, game ended 28-21...done, move on.
  24. QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Nov 13, 2007 -> 08:12 AM) I think that's really over-valuing Garland. Weeks? For a 1 year of league-average pitching at $12M? There's not a big market for that. Gamel is a B prospect, which is about what the Sox should expect -- Perry, Sickels, and BP have all pegged Garland as being worth a B prospect plus maybe a C prospect. He's just not going to bring much in return. The Rockies already have decided not to pursue him because $12M is too much to fit in their payroll (according to Ringolsby). Plus teams know the Sox have to shed payroll if they want to sign Hunter. Really? I'll admit Ben Sheets is the better pitcher, but Garland can stay healthy and eat up innings. Also, he has post-season experience and, like all the Sox starters that year, was awesome in the post-season. I guess it depends on what you want in a pitcher. If Ted Lilly and Jason Marquis are worth what they are worth in FA, than Garland is worth AT LEAST a one-for-one with Weeks. I wouldn't ask for anything else if the Sox were targeting Weeks, tho.
