Konerko might not have range, but he can pick 'em. And that's what's most important, at least to me, for a first baseman. Diving stops up the line are good to look at, but those don't happen every game. Short hops from the hole or a barehanded scoop and throw happen much more often and Paulie's pretty damn good at it. And now that he's got some protection in the lineup, I think we will have a much better second half. All speculation, of course. As for contracts, unless the Yanks or Dodgers or some other team offer him something outrageous, he's probably going to stay. I seem to remember reading somewhere he didn't like being bounced around from the Dodgers to the Reds to the Sox. And Dye at first, meh. Still, let's think about this year and then worry about next year after the trophy presentation.

QUOTE(FLsouthsider @ Jul 14, 2005 -> 08:35 PM) Leiter is waaaaaay off his game and somewhat uncharacteristically walking guys left and right. I'd stay away from this one, unless we can get him in the announcer's booth. Nope. He's done. Great competitor, great color guy. Arm fell off.

What I want to know is...why? They never said. Why would this woman do this to a 6 year old girl and her family?

QUOTE(AirScott @ Jul 14, 2005 -> 05:24 AM) at least Bobby Simmons is more of a self-less player that always does whats good for the team. the way it is in the NBA is no matter what type of player you are, being 6'10'' guaruntees you $7 million per season, and Shawn Bradley somehow stuck around for 12 years with no skills to speak of. the scary thing is, what does that guaruntee Curry, who's 6'10'' and has skills. it's ironic though, because I've always said the one thing he lacks is heart. You can't teach height.

Baseball/Softball dropped from Olympics

QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Jul 8, 2005 -> 10:22 PM) Which is exactly why the Olympic teams, at least as far as the USA is concerned, should still be amateur athletes. "Dream Teams" are bulls***. JMHO. Is it best amateur athletes? Or best athletes? That's the difference. I think you need to know that you are the best in the world and when certain people can't or don't want to show up, then you aren't the best anything. -

Bar Crawl/Progressive Drink Night. In each bar/house, there is a different drink...then you can end up at your favorite bar. Then...mini golf and batting cages. Then...Hala Kahiki in River Grove. Then...Signature room for really expensive drinks. Then...Great America.

QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Jul 13, 2005 -> 03:04 PM) You need a monkey, a goat, 100lbs if gummy worms, chocolate pudding, a hydrolic pump, 15 gallons of your choice of lubricant and a rubber duck. Kid, it's not a rubber duck...it's a REAL duck. Why do you think you need lubricant? Geez.

QUOTE(thelatinoheat_30 @ Jul 13, 2005 -> 04:08 PM) man, you guys either don't watch the games, have him muted, or like old men, i dunno which one it is. Is your thumb broken? Are you not up-to-date on technology? There are two things you can do: mute him or don't watch. If you have such a problem with Hawk, don't listen. Hawk Harrelson will be in the Hall of Fame as an announcer someday. His style is memorable, down home, and fun. He enjoys the White Sox and he enjoys the game of baseball. If he were announcing for a higher profile team, he could be on the same level as Jack Buck, Harry Caray, Ernie Harwell, Phil Rizzuto, etc. He is knowledgable of the present game and of the history of the game. So, he's repetitive. If I talked to you everyday, or anyone on this board, I bet I could find things that you say that are annoying and repetitive. As Yas said, he is THE voice of the White Sox and I couldn't see it any other way. Unless they brought Piersall back.

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jul 12, 2005 -> 08:41 PM) You can say the quality of movies nowadays is driving people away, but its way more than that. There has always been a plethora of movies that have sucked, with a scattered amount of great movies and the so-sos in between. But the advance of modern day media has made moviegoing pretty obselete. Hackers and thieves are putting full versions of movies online for download almost immediately after the movie comes out. Plus, DVDs are hitting the stores way earlier then they used to(anyone remember when you had to wait 1 maybe 2 years for a movie to come out on VHS?). Then you have the problem of paying out an arm and a leg to see a movie nowadays. Movie tickets are around 9 bucks nowadays, and refreshments are both expensive and horrible at the same time. I loathe drinking any sort of fountain drink anymore, reason being that my last experience was at a movie theater in which I had 90 percent coke syrup, 5 percent ice, 3 percent water, and 2 percent carbonation. Somebody explain to me how it is a "deal" to get 2 small drinks and one small popcorn for 11.50. Its not a goddamn deal, its a ripoff, and it has been for a long time. This is normal for movie theaters everywhere, overcharge for everything within the theater. Yet they ask why less people show up every year? Come on, people would rather wait and view these movies in the comfort of their own homes where they can eat what they want, when they want, and not have to worry about taking out another mortgage to do it. OT -- In Austin, Houston and San Antonio, we have the Alamo Drafthouse (www.drafthouse.com). Let me tell you, it's the best thing ever to happen to movies. They take out every other row of seats and replace it with a long table. They have beer and wine and a full menu of great food. It's dinner and a movie all in one. I can't believe more places like this don't open up. They have one art house theater and three mainstream theaters in Austin. And they do rolling roadshows and theme nights. For instance, they showed Jaws on Lake Travis where everyone was watching from innertubes. They also have a Big Night Night where they serve a full five-course meal for the movie Big Night. They always have guests speaking about their movies (Peter Bogdanovich was here two months ago). Tickets are about $7.50, but they make their money on concessions that are actually good and reasonably priced. That's the way to go.

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 12, 2005 -> 03:42 PM) OT: Didn't Lance Armstrong divorce his wife after overcoming cancer when she stuck with him through the whole ordeal? Yes, but from what I heard, she cheated on him.

Are we assuming that I or they speak the same language? Cuz that would leave out all Spanish or Japanese speaking players, unless it's ok to have a beer with the interpreter, too. I would have to choose...Carl Everett, because it would be fun to debate with him.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 12, 2005 -> 09:43 PM) With Rogers from all reports he is a good clubhouse guy and is a pretty good person. He made a mistake, a big one no doubt about that but it was just one mistake. The same thing happened with Carl back in his bosox days and by all reports he's absolutely loved in the clubhouse. How you relate to the fans or the media and how you are in the clubhouse are two completely different things. Now, would I want the Gambler? Yes, but only as a rental. I think he retires after this year anyway.

It all comes down to taste. Some people like Vin Scully because he tells you about the game in pictures. Some people like watching it with a member of the family, like Hawk. Personally, I like the Hawk-a-roo. He is fun, knowledgable, experienced, not afraid to take a jab at himself, and a fan. Also, remember, an announcer has to talk to fans of all ages. NOt just knowledgable fans like us, but kids watching with their parents and non-fans that are watching with others. When I was in Broadcast journalism in college, you have to assume the average education of people watching the news is 8th grade. One more thing. Please don't tell me that if you had to do that job everyday, you would do it better. A lot of baseball is tedious and monotonous. But when you have a Southern gentleman in the middle of a midwestern city bringing his Hawk-isms into a game, it brightens the broadcast. You don't have to like him, but you should respect him. HAWK.........YESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just drove back from Dallas to Austin yesterday and I saw everything from $2.29 to $2.07. I remember being in Austria with a native Austrian friend of mine and as we passed a gas station, I said, wow, your gas isn't that expensive (after doing the money conversion in my head), then she says, Oh yes it is, and I say, Oh no, it isn't and then she says, Oh yes it is, cuz that's the price per liter!!! Which is to say it was, at the time around $1.25 per liter and 1 liter is .26 of a gallon. So there's $5 a gallon!!! Yikes.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman Eric Stoltz Janeane Garofalo...see the Minus Man, excellent. But on this list, Alan Rickman. He can play funny (Dogma). He can play the villian (Die Hard, he made that movie). He can play dramatic (the HBO movie with Mos Def that I can't think of the name of right now). He can play dramedy (Love Actually). The man is brilliant.

It's funny, people on these boards think that the big names are what's going to help us. And maybe they will. Maybe a Schmidt or Burnett will help. But, we have to think of who will help this team. Do we need another starter? Yes, as insurance, but I don't think we necessarily need a #1 or #2. Do we need a LH reliever? Yes, but not necessarily the name everyone is talking about. Villone would be a good pickup as would Scott Eyre, which someone mentioned in another thread. We need a lefty to get lefties out. Not a reputation...unless that reputation can get lefties out. Podsednik isn't a big name, but he filled a need. So did Iguchi, Dye, AJ, Everett and Politte. None of them are big names. So, instead of making the huge splash TWICE, maybe a huge splash and a small splash is enough.

The Muslims who have been doing these things, especially the suicide bombings believe they will go straight to heaven. Optomistically, I'm hoping the peaceful Muslims, start to rebel against the radical ones. If the US-led coalition really wants to help that part of the region, they need to get a Martin Luther King-like person, someone well respected in the Muslim world to spread the word of tolerance for all religions. That Christianity is on an equal ground with Islam and Judaism and Buddhism and Hinduism and Taoism, etc. That the bombings are making it worse for that part of the world and that religion. The clear-thinking Muslims have to know that these bombings are only causing the rest of the world to have pity on the poor innocents in these countries. So, instead of the US, UK and other coalition members sending more fighting men and women, they should send diplomats to help install a leader, an anti-bin Laden, someone with the same amount of support, one that is so revered that no one will touch him, and if they do, he will be martyred. And when they are done there, they should do that here.
