Clemens Rumor
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 5, 2005 -> 09:08 PM) And for the minor leaguers, you entirely missed the point, im saying you cant guarantee they will pan out, for the MB Garland and A-row, we have tons of highly regarded prospects who have failed, how bout Borchard, Olivo. There are 2 sides to the coin. Im saying i dont care about the next few years, I want us to have the best chance to win now, if we dont, then fine, we lost. But I want KW to give us the best players to get to the WS now. But there has got to be a percentage of prospects that make it to the big leagues and contribute. And, yes, you don't know if a prospect will pan out. But, you also don't know if they will. In other words, you have to pick and choose. Sometimes a GM makes the wrong decisions. But to give them all away because you don't know what they will cripple your team if they are needed. BMac had an awesome spring. How were any of us to know he wouldn't carry that over to the regular season.

Clemens Rumor
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 5, 2005 -> 08:41 PM) Doesnt matter what he did then, its what he does NOW, and what he has now is a 1.41 in a hitters park. If you want to sit back and make sure we have some question mark minor leaguers for the next few years, thats you, I for one, would sell the barons for a WS title. Our minor leaguers dont exactly have the best track record coming up anyway, who says they are worth jack s***? Our top prospect just came up and tanked, the track record speaks the trend is that. So you wouldnt trade some serious question marks for the best pitcher in the NL? Thats honestly sad, I want to win now, and this is the team to do it, is there anyone else who wants a WS title? We know from the 85 bears that we can live on it for at least 20 years if not more. Is there a success rate for minor leaguers? I mean you got guys like Buerhle and Piazza who were drafted low and have become stars and you have guys like Borchard who is a dud. I don't think anyone can make a sweeping judgment about anyone's farm system. McCarthy pitched 4 or 5 games. It took Jon Garland 5 years for it to click. There will always be duds. But if McCarthy or Anderson are traded and become stars somewhere AND we don't win that World Series you think we will get by acquiring one player, you just got punk'd.

Schmidt rumor just that, a rumor
QUOTE(SpringfieldFan @ Jul 5, 2005 -> 05:13 PM) Complete agreement here, and I think that is one explanation to why we have such trouble in Oakland. Those hitters just go with the pitches and look for singles and solid contact, rather then the dinger. The trouble is that that is the only kind of pitcher the Sox usually have. They are all very good, but they don't match up with the unique A's hitters. LT I have to disagree with you there. It's in their heads. It has been pounded in the White Sox heads that they don't play well in Oakland. Soooo, they end up not playing well in Oakland. This team is built to win anywhere. It's that old chestnut of not being able to win on the West Coast. They can win and they will win, if they put their minds to it.

TRADE THREAD II ~ July 2 - July 8
QUOTE(knightni @ Jul 5, 2005 -> 05:10 PM) Redman is too iffy. Rusch would be better, IMO. I think Rusch is just as iffy. Redman has better career numbers.

TRADE THREAD II ~ July 2 - July 8
QUOTE(knightni @ Jul 5, 2005 -> 04:58 PM) I never said that we were. By posting the "we will only get big names" article, I took it as a response to my Glendon Rusch rumor. Also, I never said that we were going to get Schmidt. I only said that if the Sporting News rumor was true, that it would happen after the All-Star Break. I know I quoted you, but it was more in response to the rumors. Fun to talk about, but about a 5% chance it's going to happen. I'd loooove to see Clemens in a Sox uni, but he will NOT come to Chicago. He has a Michael Jordan-like deal with the Astros, in his hometown. Anyway, I wasn't trying to start an argument. I think we need to think outside the box. In fact, I think Anthrax's idea of Mark Redman is a good one.

TRADE THREAD II ~ July 2 - July 8
QUOTE(knightni @ Jul 5, 2005 -> 04:47 PM) You believe everything you read, don't you? You think KW is just going to come out and spill everything to the media ahead of time? He isn't known for being "under the radar" for nothing. Even so, by using "Big Splash", that means that he isn't going to get any of the big names. He isn't willing to give away our top two prospects and he doesn't want to ruin the chemistry on the team right now by trading a Crede. We aren't getting Schmidt. We aren't getting Clemens. We aren't getting AJ Burnett. We may get a number 3-5 pitcher or some LH relief. But c'mon, these are just rumors made by guys who get paid to sell newspapers and hits to websites. They are fun to read, though.

BBTN Harry Reynolds
Kalapse, you are right. Except, that Buehrle has been remarkably consistent in his career. He has been one of the best leftys in the AL for three years now. He's a workhorse and has nothing to show for it. Halladay has a Cy Young and the strikeout numbers that make him flashy. Mark should get his just desserts and be able to start the AS game. That being said, I don't want him to, because I want him saved for the 2nd half.

Worst Chicago Athlete
QUOTE(LauraJ14 @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 04:14 PM) There is no way that Cal Eldred belongs on this list, he pitched well for the Sox in 2000 until his arm fell off. Jerome Walton and Dwight Smith shouldn't be on the list either. They were exactly what they needed to be when they were with the Cubs. This is a list of bad players, not hated players. Ex: Good: Frank Thomas Bad: Jamie Navarro

So...
My soon to be mother-in-law is deathly afraid of heights and she loved her trip. It's not windy...you just float there. And the basket she was in was big enough that you don't bounce around. I would love to do that. Have fun Steff and report back.

Ten Commandments NOT allowed in Courtrooms
QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 05:28 PM) It remains to be seen if state & local governments are going to respect this decision. The decision itself did not declare such things as being unconstitutional or in violation of the sep of C&S doctrine. Instead it stated that such things demand scrutiny to determine whether their displays amount to government promoting religion. This is why I have little respect for those who voted in favor of this ruling. First of again it separates religion from philosophy. So it's ok for scientologists to put a doctrine in a court room because they are not a "religion" per-se? It's ridiculous. But even worse is their reference to "religion" in general. The doctrine for sep of C&S pertains to a predominance of any one religion over another. It does not imply that religion in general be treated as a taboo. Yet that is exactly what these recent rulings amount to by the USSC on matters of religion. The ramifications are great. The conservative groups just got a shot in the arm now to be more aggressive in getting out the vote. There have already been two attempts at ratifying an amendment supporting school prayer & the last one was narrowly defeated. I can imagine this decision to broaden that attempt by amending the doctrine itself to clarify how it is to be interpreted. The doctrine as it has been interpreted by the USSC amounts to nothing more than censorship & discrimination against those who CHOOSE to believe in a spiritual world. What is the difference between religion & philosophy? One is based predominantly on a spiritualistic moral point of view & the other is based predominantly n a humanistic moral POV. The judiciary has no right to censor or discriminate against either. You've gotta watch the slippery slope. If you have prayer in school, who's to say that a Christian teacher leads a Christian prayer in a class with Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, etc. If you want your children to have school prayer, send them to a religious school. Plus, there have been a lot more religious wars than philosophical wars.

Jeremy Roenick sounds off about fans
Dear Jeremy Roenick, When you go to work everyday, 8 hours a day, and make less than 6 figures, then, maybe, I'll listen to what you have to say. But when most of your fans can't afford tickets because of salaries that you and your constituents in your union demand, and owners continue to pay, I find it laughable that you dare to chastise them. You were one of my favorite players, but by spewing this ridiculous tirade, that, by the way, solidifies the point you were trying to refute, I have lost all respect for you. Pulling the jersey over your head, Matt PS. Don't ever talk to me like that again when you voluntarily don't do your job for any length of time.

hot or cold
QUOTE(sec159row2 @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 05:16 PM) what do people like better... I'm still recovering from the weekend, I've been drinking water like crazy and havn't peed since friday morning, mild exaggeration, and all I keep thinking is those beautiful april 45 degree games... screw 100 degree heat... I can dress for 45 degrees, hat/gloves and such... but 95-100 degree heat... you can get naked and still be uncomfortable, from the heat ... just wondering what people like better... sorry if this is in the wrong forum... Whine, whine, whine... . It's been in the 90's for, at least 4 weeks without a hint of rain down here in Austin. I miss the cold. I don't enjoy walking out of my office and immediately sweating. It is fun to weigh yourself before you work outside and then after to see how much water weight you've lost. I lost 6 pounds yesterday...

Favorite airport?
Austin's airport is awesome...they don't have any national chains (except Schlotzky's, which is based in Austin), great food, local music IN THE TERMINAL!!! Others, O'Hare isn't bad once you're in it. DFW is fine, as long as you know where you're going. Providence is nice and small. Orlando Las Vegas Portland Vancouver (beautliful to fly in and out of) San Francisco LGA...not so good. LAX...not so good. Denver...too damn far from anything. Seattle...meh. Vancouver (too long to get thru lines)

Jason Schdimt to the Sox??
Why are we talking about all or nothing? why is it either a #1 starter like Schmidt, Oswalt or Pettitte OR a #5/bullpen guy like Lilly? There's gotta be some middle of the rotation guys out there. Someone that can slot in the #3 or #4 place? That can eat some starter innings or do some long relief, if needed. In other words, there's gotta be someone that won't cost as much as Schmidt or be as iffy as Lilly.

What Is Your Greatest Memory
QUOTE(Al Lopez's Ghost @ Jun 24, 2005 -> 04:11 PM) The 1991 media guide lists 44. On July 2, 1984 Kittle hit one, then the next day Luzinski and Ruppert Jones of Detroit did it. Then on August 1, 1984 Kittle and Fisk hit ones against Boston's Bob Ojeda. The last Sox player to do it was Ron Kittle on a horrible cold night, 4-17-90. The most powerful display I saw was George Bell, when he was with Toronto, when on 8-24-85 he took Seaver to the roof, the next day he went roofing with Floyd Bannister, and on 8-23-85, he hit one into the center field bleachers off the immortal Dave Wehrmeister. Only 7 balls went into the CF bleachers. I think I went to all of those games in July of '84. I was definitely at the game with The Bull and Ruppert Jones. But I remember seeing 4 in a game, this must've been it, 4 in two days.
