  1. Who's on tap to start the gameday thread? Let's go people!!!
  2. QUOTE (WCSox @ May 21, 2009 -> 11:08 AM) Well, that and the traffic, general congestion, lack of natural beauty, lack of good hiking and skiing, etc. Well then...stay in Oregon, ya birkenstock-wearin', pot-smokin', liberal-bein', hippy!
  3. QUOTE (rangercal @ May 21, 2009 -> 11:02 AM) On the contrary, what would it do to our reputation? I don't think anything. I think most baseball people will look at Peavy thinking he's a selfish jerk who has a thin skin. He claims he wants to do what's best for the Padres, yet, he would be willing to turn down a trade. Well Jake, if that's the case, accept and move on.
  4. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 21, 2009 -> 11:00 AM) At the end of this thread, Jake Peavy is either going to be the greatest pitcher who ever lived or the biggest tool. If he doesn't waive his NTC, does this do anything to his reputation? Does he look like a selfish jackass?
  5. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ May 21, 2009 -> 10:53 AM) I'm kind of with you on this. I think it would be a good add, if it doesn't happen it's a good sign that the org and KW will continue to be agressive to improve this team. The worst part will be temporary and it will be Cubs fans saying how much the Sox suck and nobody wants to play here. And then the Sox can say, At least we had a deal agreed to. (under breath) *2005 world series champions*
  6. QUOTE (Y2HH @ May 21, 2009 -> 10:28 AM) None of this means anything unless Peavy says yes...so settle down. I disagree...but I already posted about that, so I won't rehash.
  7. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ May 21, 2009 -> 10:24 AM) What's a good Padres forum? SteveGarveyLookedRidiculousInOur80sSoftballUniforms.com
  8. QUOTE (BearSox @ May 21, 2009 -> 10:21 AM) Poreda is clearly the centerpiece of the deal for them. Poreda and Richard is a huge piece. Richard is ML ready, with a little tweaking. Poreda is just about ready, is a number 1 pick, and is a lefty. To add Beckham, Flowers, etc...would be overpaying. EDIT: Especially if the Sox pick up most of the contract.
  9. QUOTE (fattyguy78 @ May 21, 2009 -> 10:17 AM) 2013 i believe, fa in 2014 I think 2013 is an option year with a buy-out.
  10. If you start to feel hot when you walk into church...it'll pass. Daven for me, please.
  11. QUOTE (fathom @ May 21, 2009 -> 10:06 AM) Seriously, the Padres could be interested in Lillibridge as a final piece of the package (to go along with a big time PTBNL). Petco would be PERFECT for Lillibridge... /sarcasm.
  12. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 20, 2009 -> 05:51 PM) No one ever reads stuff I put in the catch-all threads. I'm sorry, did you post something???
  13. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ May 21, 2009 -> 09:50 AM) Why isn't Ozzie on the phone talking about any concerns Peavy might have? Although this call, and Ozzie's inability to be understood could hurt the deal, too. And I'd say...you'd be talking to Don Cooper more. A LOT more.
  14. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 21, 2009 -> 09:45 AM) Acquiring Peavy will just prove my point. The one you told me was wrong. I just don't want to see the BS if he says no and KW goes back to his $.50 routine wondering if they will be able to pay the electric bill. Well then, you come out of a casino yelling, "I JUST WON 10 MILLION DOLLARS!" Or, "Hey, car salesmen...I have $50000!!!" I mean, c'mon. No GM can tip their hand.
  15. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 21, 2009 -> 09:36 AM) But it shows they aren't at or over their salary limit like they have been preaching. I'm not suggesting they just give all that money to the next guy. What I'm saying is their every dollar in goes out isn't accurate. They obviously have some cash laying around. Everyone has the right to change their mind. Angelo said he wanted to address the QB situation, but if the whole Cutler thing hadn't made itself available, we would have gone into 2009 with Orton, Basanez, Hanie and whoever else. But, things change. Not to mention, some of the big salaries are coming off the books next year. Also, Peavy, if he pitches well and the Sox are back in contention, will bring in more dollars. So, in this case, it's every dollar out comes in.
  16. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ May 21, 2009 -> 09:32 AM) If KW gets Peavy, i want a Mea Culpa from all the posters who were talking s*** about KW's desire to compete. Their's no doubt that he's made mistakes, but the guy hates to lose. +1
  17. QUOTE (DBAHO @ May 21, 2009 -> 09:29 AM) Was there any guy in FA FWIW that you would have given $10M to? Peavy's a franchise pitcher. You don't get the chance to acquire a pitcher like him, especially when you consider how much a team like the Yankees would have given him if he hit free agency in the past off-season (think Sabathia money). Exactly! This is similar to the Bears getting Cutler. You don't pass up the chance to get a franchise quarterback in/or entering his prime and you don't pass up the chance to get a former Cy Young winning franchise pitcher. If he says no, hey, you tried. But, I'm not just going to say, "OK, who's next, we have this money slotted to go to Peavy, he didn't want it, I'll give it to the next pitcher available."
  18. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 21, 2009 -> 09:08 AM) When this trade falls through, will KW be willing to pick up salary elsewhere? He obviously isn't at his limit. I'm not going to go through 18 pages so if this has been said, I apologize. Whether Peavy decides to come to the Sox or not, this is HUGE for Kenny and for the team. This shows the team that they want to win, they want to win now and that pitching wins championships. This shows the fans that a lead-off hitter and center fielder, while important, isn't a turning point. This shows the players that he believes in them turning this s*** around. It's a nice kick in the pants, hopefully the Sox...from the highest paid to the lowest paid get the message. This is why I think Kenny is one of the best GMs in baseball. Plus, it's a fantastic shot in the guts to the Cubs. Suckers.
  19. And as that quote said...it is everyone's fault. This season has been a comedy of errors so far. They have a lot of high potential players who haven't done what they were supposed to do. Not one of the rookies has broken out. The sophs have been horrible so far, except for CQ's power output. And the pitchers, outside of Buehrle and the pen have been pretty durn bad. When the pitchings been good, the hitting's been bad. And vice versa. And the defense, well, sucks. This team just needs to buckle down and fight through it. Probably won't win the division, but could make a good run at it.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 20, 2009 -> 02:44 PM) Who is to say that Floyd won't get more confidence out of the pen in very specific situations taylored for his own success versus going out and getting his ass kicked all over the AL? Who is to say that two weeks away from the game, followed by some starts against AAA teams won't allow him to work his mechanical problems out, all without the pressures of each pitch being important? I hate to do this to you since you are one of my favorite posters here but... Who's to say it will?
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 20, 2009 -> 12:34 PM) I wish EVERYONE would adapt that credo in a lot more areas. Edited.
  22. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ May 19, 2009 -> 04:51 PM) i'd like to watch it again, because if memory serves me right there were a couple of times the Sox had runners on and no outs and got squat. I know there was a runner thrown out at the plate (Law?). The Sox definitely had their chances in that game. White Sox 2009?
  23. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 19, 2009 -> 02:11 PM) Veto override attempt fails. Needed 14 of 19, got 11. The tax stays. So much for the will of the people. I hope people remember this vote (or are reminded) at the next election. Time to clean house. And to weigh in on the Mayor discussion...Daley has done A LOT for this city. More than any other I can think of back to Bilandic. What he does is keep his distance from the corruption and if he's implicated, he's incredible at deflecting the criticism and changing into a "Yeah, but, look what I HAVE done." /high, screechy voice
  24. As I'm rarely in here to post, I apologize in advance if this has been said: The two sides to this, labels attached, are Pro-Life and Pro-Choice. I think, for the most part, the Pro-Choice side has been consistent at saying "Choice." This isn't to say that any one of those people are actually Pro-Abortion. That, to me, is the crux of the matter. With exceptions, this country is based on the freedom to choose (and please, don't start flaming me with, "Patriot Act!" "Yelling Fire in a Crowded Theater!" I understand all of that, I'm talking the Constitution, as written). Personally, I am against abortion in some cases, like late-term. I also think, if a woman has had more than a designated amount (i.e. using as birth control) something should be done, I don't know what, but something. Honestly though, it's none of my damn business what women do with their bodies. I understand the moral attachments that come along with it, but there is absolutely no way that pro-life Bob or Mary from Wheaton should be able to have a say in what Jane in Hilton Head should do. If you are against abortion...don't have one. Teach your kids that abstinence/contraception is the way to go. You can only control what you can control...and you can't control everyone.
  25. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 19, 2009 -> 03:24 PM) MARK! MBINAA
