  1. QUOTE (Disco72 @ May 29, 2009 -> 03:28 PM) Plus, the deal was done. In terms of GM-to-GM and talent-for-talent, the deal was agreed upon. I'm not sure I buy your "tougher next time" argument. I think people know now the price for Peavy. Unless the Houston GM feels Oswalt is more valuable than Peavy, I don't see how he could expect more talent than the Sox agreed to for Peavy. Because it isn't just about talent. It's about how much money is left on the contract, the age of the player, the financial condition of the team, if the player has publicly stated he wants out, if the team has publicly stated they want said player out...any number of factors will play into a deal.
  2. Besides those two, though...the others look pretty good. I wouldn't say he's a glorified blogger, yes, he has bad articles, but then again, who doesn't? In the interest of fairness, I know Dayn and he does know a lot about the sport.
  3. QUOTE (Shamrock4Life @ May 29, 2009 -> 11:23 AM) J.R. was recruited as a buyer by Gerry Betteman (sp?), the NHL commissioner. The whole point of JR buying the Coyotes would be to keep them in Glendale, not to relocate them somewhere else. The whole reason the Coyote ownership filed for Chapter 11 is because the NHL would not approve the sale of the team to the founder of BlackBerry, who stated he wanted to move the team to Canada, near the Toronto and Buffalo teams. Betteman knows JR from is days in the NBA. The NHL presented the cause of buying the team to JR. I am sure just like the Bulls and Sox, JR put together a group of investors, and gave an offer to the Coyotes. That offer is no where near as large as the offer from the BB founder, thus to force the sale of team to the party that will give the most capital to the bankrupt team, they filed chapter 11. The NHL is suing to prevent this. Also the financing for the bankruptcy filing is being provided by the BB founder. Hamilton may not be the BEST place for an NHL team, but Canada (or the Northern US) is the RIGHT place. While hockey in the South has succeeded in some places, Dallas and LA comes to mind. It hasn't in most places. Phoenix will never be a hockey town. Time to think about Quebec City, Winnipeg, and Hartford again...especially now that there's a salary cap and floor. Puts the Canadian dollar on even ground.
  4. Dick... First of all, no business owner WANTS to operate in the red. Second, JR and the board lets his people do their work without interfering. JR used to do more, but I think he trusts Kenny. AND if they have to interfere, then there is a problem. Third (since Steff isn't here), JR is the face of the board. He doesn't make the absolute decision. The board does. Finally, what's wrong with leaving a little money left over and hiding it from the public? If agents and players hear..."Hey! The White Sox have cash to burn!" Then the Sox have little to no negotiating power. And really, the White Sox organization doesn't have to answer to you. Or me. Or anyone on this board. Or in Chicago. If you are sick of it, don't go to games.
  5. How about a straight up swap between Fields and Chavez....... /reminiscing about old trade winds thread
  6. Amazing game...crap goal to end it. What I really hope is that the Wings have taken notice. That the young 'hawks are coming up behind them...and fast. Great game by Huet...stepped up when needed and kicked some ass. Awesome backhander by Kane. I think that's going to be his "signature." I think that was the second time he did that in the playoffs. Blackhawks...hell of a season. Now take some time off...and get ready for next year!
  7. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 27, 2009 -> 02:50 PM) Haren will cost a lot more than Peavy, if he's even available. Ummm...why? Is it because the Padres are in a deeper financial hole and would take less? Please explain why when you post stuff like this...cuts down on post count.
  8. Not to mention that SF has seen Jayson Nix as a member of the Rockies. So, he's what you would call...out.
  9. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 27, 2009 -> 02:44 PM) If you want to know who KW is really targeting, I would take a look at Dan Haren in AZ. The Dbacks are 11 games back and they will sell off some of those guys. We are in a position to give them 2 sp's in Poreda and Richard and some minor league players for Haren if need be. He is a guy I would like to target. 2007: 3.07 ERA 1.21 WHIP 2008: 3.33 ERA 1.13 WHIP 2009: 2.57 ERA .90 WHIP Salary: 2009: 7.5 2010:8.25 2011:12.75 2012:12.75 2013: 15.5 team option or 3.5 million buyout Thats not a bad commitment. See...and I thought your brain was clogged with malted hops and bong resin. That's thinkin'!!!
  10. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ May 27, 2009 -> 11:22 AM) I think the Sox are desperate for pitching, in the sense, that we have zero players in our system currently who project to be a #1 or #2 starter. So I'd say that could make it a serious need, especially given the fact that the team has quite a few offensive minded prospects, one of which (our #1 prospect) plays the same position as Ramirez. I don't think you can ever truly say a system has #1 or #2 starters in their systems until they prove it at the major league level. See Mark Buehrle. While he's not a typical #1, he does what a #1 is supposed to do minus the "stuff." See Gavin Floyd. He's got #1 stuff, but hasn't harnessed it enough. I don't think they are desperate for a #1 or #2, they are desperate for depth.
  11. I petitioned TBS to see if they would play a Matlock marathon today. They responded..."Oh, is it FlaSoxxJim's birthday today?" Happity Burfday! Here's to a White Sox winner and your beer of choice!
  12. No to Matt Cain. Yes to Roy Oswalt. (Guessing neither would happen, tho)
  13. QUOTE (forrestg @ May 26, 2009 -> 02:30 PM) opposite field hits may mean his timing is off swinging a little late or he needs to cut down on his swing. Many right hand power hitters power alley is to right center. If he's striking out too much not hitting the ball for power and averages sound more like we need to get rid of Greg Walker. With his firing I think at least we, the fans could at least feel as if Sox management is at least trying to make the team better. And back to the regularly scheduled Fire Greg Walker show...
  14. Two words...Peggy Kusinski. How about Sam Ryan???
  15. QUOTE (ptatc @ May 26, 2009 -> 01:07 PM) The only explanation for that is that they believe the problem may be scar tissue between the plantar fascia and the surrounding tissues. The "good popping" would be the tearing of scar tissue to allow more flexibilty and increased blood supply to the area. Would scar tissue make an audible "pop?" If so, I wasn't aware of that.
  16. QUOTE (Texsox @ May 26, 2009 -> 01:03 PM) Friend of yours? Nope, just love the name Van Reidhead! And the only people I know in the Valley (besides you) have LEFT the Valley.
  17. Havlat and Bulin Wall did not practice, so according to Eddie O, he said if they don't practice, they probably don't play. Ugh.
  18. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 26, 2009 -> 12:03 PM) I'll admit it, Pods is doing far better than I thought he would. No question that he and Anderson are a better choice than Wise, who I hope stays behind those two in the pecking order. Trib says TCQ back by the weekend anyway, so hopefully that means Wise stays in Charlotte. I still think Pods is pretty awful on D, and doesn't belong in CF, but his bat has been a nice surprise. His speed also helps, as long as he isn't trying to steal. Was that the article where Big Herm said the popping sound TCQ heard is a good thing? If so, I wonder why? I'd like a bit more of an explanation than just that tidbit.
  19. QUOTE (klaus kinski @ May 26, 2009 -> 11:44 AM) He gets on base-and has hit both left & right handers He'd just more versatile with the bat than Wise could ever be He just needs to steal some bases...or at least scare teams into thinking he still can.
  20. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ May 26, 2009 -> 11:36 AM) This might not end well. Blow it out yer Colon, Thunderbolt!
  21. QUOTE (Texsox @ May 26, 2009 -> 11:17 AM) Linked Reidhead?!?!
  22. QUOTE (greg775 @ May 26, 2009 -> 11:27 AM) Good analysis, but in reality what we need is a kick ass winning streak. Without winning eight or 10 in a row at some point or going 8-2 or 9-2 or something, forget it. While that's great...winning series is more important. Sweeping the occasional series helps, but going 2 for 3 is the way to go, especially in this division.
  23. Belated belated happity happity burfday burfday!!
