  1. Happity happity happity burfday burfday burfday!!!
  2. QUOTE (greg775 @ May 26, 2009 -> 08:36 AM) It seems to me that except for the handful of truly elite pitchers, almost anybody you sign would have potential flaws. It's the nature of pitching today. Look at KC. Meche. He was simply horrible yesterday and is 2-5. Bannister is doing pretty well this year after a horrid season. Even CC is up and down year to year. Cliff Lee. Zambrano gets hurt once in a while. Is there any guarantee Greinke will pitch like this consistently one year to the next? Some of Detroit's pitchers have been Jeckyll/Hyde. What about Nolasco who had to be send down after last year's success?? Don't you agree anybody you sign to a multi year deal is a big risk? How can teams sign anybody?? Which is why Reinsdorf is right in not signing pitchers to long-term deals.
  3. I saw this for the first time on Friday. Hey, Scotty has become more of a slap hitter since the last time he was here. If it works for him and his timing, good. And it seems to be working. As G&T said, he needs to stop getting picked off/caught stealing and he won't be thrown at. And I will add...if he keeps hitting, it will also stop because they are going to (gulp) have to respect him.
  4. QUOTE (striker62704 @ May 22, 2009 -> 02:32 PM) I would be fine with taking the first two games then losing 100-1 Careful what you ask for.
  5. Game three of the year for me. 1-1. Let's do this thing.
  6. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ May 22, 2009 -> 02:03 PM) Mr. Verducci, I respect you as an MLB writer, but I have to strongly disagree with you on how you portrayed the White Sox in relation to the Jake Peavy deal. First, I 100% agree with you that they aren't in the greatest shape this year, there is no denying that, but the Peavy deal isn't about just this year. The White Sox have 40 million dollars in payroll coming off the books after this year, even with adding Peavy it would be over 20m of flexability. They have Mark Buehrle and Jon Danks signed or under control for the next three years. They have a farm system that is getting praise from national outlets plus 4 more high picks coming in early June. Not to mention they have a GM and owners who have won 2 division and a WS in the last 5 years and have made every effort to put a winning team on the field year after year. Does it always pan out? No, but what team outside of the NYY and the Braves of the 90's does it? Also, shortsighted, adding Peavy to Buehrle and an offense that might improve, they could have made a legit run this year. Again, this year doesn't look promising, but I feel you completely sold the White Sox as a franchise undeservingly short. What I wrote to Verducci... it's more of a generic mailbag submisison thing, so I doubt he will see it, probably gets screened by interns and it's not "Aren't the Yankees and Red Sox awesome?!?!? Please elaborate!!" *thumbs up*
  7. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ May 22, 2009 -> 01:55 PM) ha, yeah, right in front of my face! it's like at least once a week I spend 5 minutes looking for my cell phone when it's in my pocket Or sunglasses and they are on my head.
  8. I think of every series like Ozzie thinks...while the outcome is important, it's how you handle the games that's more important. If the Sox can come out tonight and have a good showing against the Pirates after the shellacking they got yesterday, that's a good sign. Sometimes, s*** happens, but it the Sox lose 1-0 or 2-1 in a well-pitched game, is that horrible? No. That being said, they better win the next two. Of course, I'll be at the game tonight with my father-in-law for his first White Sox game (he's from Rhode Island and a Red Sox fan) so they better win and show him a good time.
  9. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ May 22, 2009 -> 01:47 PM) lol, great minds CoC!!!! I thought all SI writers had e-mail addresses, I can't find Verduci's, I want to write him and point out the future upside of the Sox and how they are team who always want to put a winning team on the field... can anyone find it? There was a comments section right next to it that went to his mailbag. I wrote to him there.
  10. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ May 22, 2009 -> 01:38 PM) Verducci's article absolutely slaps us in the face but hey, it's what we put together this offseason. I cant fight his facts. He's being shortsighted. The Sox may win now...but they are setting up to win in the future. SF...GET OUT OF MY BRAIN!!!
  11. QUOTE (fathom @ May 22, 2009 -> 01:34 PM) This year, it's possible they have similar records. However, the Padres are awful. They have no pitching depth, and their offense is abysmal besides Gonzalez. And the White Sox future is much better than the Pads.
  12. QUOTE (fathom @ May 22, 2009 -> 01:29 PM) I actually agree with what Heyman said about the White Sox in his article. Which part? The part where he doesn't understand or the part where he says KW is a fighter. The one thing I always said about Kenny is that as a fan, I can't complain about him sitting on his hands. He's always trying to make the team better. Key word: trying.
  13. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ May 22, 2009 -> 01:25 PM) I love how everyone in the media is trying to make KW look foolish for trading for one of the top 5 pitchers in baseball. Heyman: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writ...ex.html?eref=T1 Verducci: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writ...ikes/index.html f*** them.
  14. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 22, 2009 -> 01:11 PM) Hawk didn't think the deal would get done because of the NTC. Seems like the White Sox were swinging hard in case they hit it and they missed. Although I suppose there still is a chance this gets done, I find it extremely doubtful. Another reason to fire Greg Walker.
  15. QUOTE (iamshack @ May 22, 2009 -> 01:03 PM) The interesting thing about this point is that I don't know how you question Kenny's desire to build a winning team. First of all, if he is acquiring you, the $17 million a year pitcher, he obviously is committed to winning. Secondly, the guy has a track record, perhaps more so than any other GM in the game, of stepping up and trying to acquire impact players (impact superstars, actually), including yourself. Thirdly, he brought a World Series title in 05' to a City that has not had one in a bazillion years, and follows that up by trading for Jim Thome less than a month later. The desire and capacity to produce a winning ballclub is clearly there. I dunno, I don't blame the guy for making the decision he made. I agree with Jason...the guy has earned the right to make these sorts of decisions, and any one of us would have exercised that right had we earned it in our jobs. And I guess I don't blame him for asking about personnel decisions on our side....but if the question is whether Kenny wants (and will do what it takes) to produce a winning ballclub, then man, I think I would have been tempted to buy into the guy. Well said. And I would like to add...he's not acquiring you to trade you for more pieces (that hasn't been Kenny's M.O.). The team wants you here for years to build another championship team. So, to give him the opt out clause after every year would be ludicrous. Both he and the Padres have made their bed, and they have to lie in it. What I would really appreciate from him, or any one in Peavy's position, is to stop talking about the team. You don't want to do what's best for the Padres. You want to do what's best for you...and that's ok. But, what's best for the Padres is for you to get out of town for the best package possible.
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 20, 2009 -> 08:44 PM) Indiana still has a rainy day fund... just sayin. Yeah, but the 7 people with a full set of teeth are the only ones that know...or care.
  17. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 22, 2009 -> 12:07 PM) I don't think they are the same. Cheney wants a holy war, involving violence, and sees that cause as higher than the Constitution or anything else. Gore's agenda doesn't include death. Well, it does...just in a longer time frame.
  18. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ May 22, 2009 -> 12:48 PM) Axelrod said that Peavy asked KW some pointed questions. About Dye being traded, Thome's Future, ETC, and was well aware of Danks' and Floyd's potential. IT was also said that Peavy picked up the phone ready to say no, and that KW nearly convinced him. Hmmm...coming from the agent. I don't buy it.
  19. I don't want Dweezy back. Here's what Pods does that Dweezy doesn't...takes pitches. He's not a walk machine by any means, but he looks at more pitches than Dweezy does. So, until Getz can getz back on track to take over lead off again, I want someone who can take a few pitches than swing at the first one and fly out to the warning track. Defensively, neither one of those guys is going to be a late inning replacement, so f em. One more thing, though. If CQ is out for an extended period of time and Getz is lead off. I want Dweezy in left and batting 9th, never higher. Better D than Pods.
  20. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 22, 2009 -> 09:07 AM) Which would have saved about $1 million in a signing bonus for someone who chances are will never amount to anything. The fact is JR isn't going to take a bath on Peavy, not with the current roster, because Jake Peavy with no other changes isn't the difference between a World Series and winning 75 games this year. He's not this mythical "special player" that guarantees victory. They went after Hunter. They went after Fukudome, a guy who had never played in the major leagues before. The money is there. Their every dime in goes out BS has been exposed a few times. There's nothing wrong with a business making a profit, but KW needs to stop the woo is me, I have no money, and then hey Jake Peavy I just found $50 million, come play with us, then Jake says no and we will go back to the "we have no money" routine. Some will buy KW only has $.50 and can't pay the electric bill. I think most know better now. He said he was working on Peavy for 11 months, maybe he withheld his salary believing he would acquire him, but there is money available. JR doesn't operate in the red. This was not a one year deal...at least for the Sox. This was a building deal. We also know that pitching wins championships. Building around a rotation of Peavy, Buehrle, Danks, Floyd (if he can get his head out of his ass), and either Colon/Richard/Poreda/whoever then putting pieces together behind them, that's how you win titles. So, yeah, dishing out the money for 3 years (notice they weren't willing to pick up the 4th for $22 mil) at a pretty decent cost of 3/$48 mil for a presumed ace is a pretty good cost. Going up to 4/$70 mil was just too much. As much as I am disappointed, I love the fact that the organization was willing to take a short term hit in salary for the rest of 2009 for a hopeful long term gain through 2012. I think we all need to stop thinking about the option year and remember this is roughly $16 million a year for three years for a former Cy Young pitcher who's 27. And don't start with the NL vs. AL crap or Petco vs. Cell crap...I know all of that, but as someone said in the other thread...there are two pitchers pitching in that park in any given game.
  21. QUOTE (rangercal @ May 21, 2009 -> 11:03 PM) There is a difference between a top ACE and roster fillers. This.
  22. I can't imagine anyone guaranteeing that last year. $22 million dollars for a pitcher in a pitchers park with a history of elbow problems? The only way I could see it if part of the money was deferred. And I don't see him taking that deal. Also, if that opt-out clause is real...he's leaving teams with no control...and I can't imagine any owner, in this economy, will take that deal. As for the thread question...the Padres can go back to being a non-issue and the Cubs can go back to trying for 102 years. I could care less about this game.
  23. I think I can say that Peavy will never be a member of the White Sox now...whether he "changes his mind" or even closer to the trade deadline. The one thing about a close knit organization is that if you piss off one, you piss off them all. And really, we aren't any worse than we were yesterday at 9:30 am. Well, maybe 19 runs worse.
  24. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ May 21, 2009 -> 03:52 PM) Greg Walker, Brian Anderson, Chris Young.... Still lots to cover here. You forgot Eric Chavez, Intelligent Design and MBINAA.
