8/1 Game Thread- Sox vs Twins 7:10 PM CT
fathom replied to Jose Abreu's topic in 2014 Season in Review
QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 1, 2014 -> 09:22 PM) Dayan getting a much-needed day off. He needs to clear his head and perhaps take one last shot at nuking his swing and/or approach at the plate and trying something new. Maybe Sierra continues pushing for more playing time as well. Would have rather that day off come tomorrow instead of against a LHP, especially given how awful ADA has been against LHP this year. -
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Aug 1, 2014 -> 03:17 PM) I'm disappointed that Hahn didn't pull some magical s*** out of a hat, but I'm not surprised at all. We didn't have anything good to sell except Alexei, and there aren't any contenders that need a SS. If there's something to be disappointed about, it's that all of the guys that could have been good pieces had horrible seasons. But it's not all bad -- we do have good players, after all, it's just that we've done a good job at locking them up contractually so that they AREN'T trade bait. I forget which podcast I was listening to, but the speaker was making an argument that it was a very weak buyer's market by listing the types of guys that were realistically available, team by team. When he got to the White Sox, he said, "You can have any White Sock (sic) you want -- except the good ones." And I think there's a lot of truth in that. This is all that needs to be said. One thing Theo has had great success with the last few years is getting guys on short-term contracts that played great the first half of the year, and then he turned around and traded them for some strong packages. Unfortunately, Paulino/Downs/Belisario have been busts.

Marlins got Cosart instead of Danks.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 07:58 PM) The Sox aren't winning anything in 2015 anyway. It makes no difference. By the time the Sox have a chance to win the division, Price will be a highly paid free agent in another town. I wouldn't be surprised if they're able to sign Price to an extension, and then let Scherzer go.
-
Price, Scherzer, Verlander, Sanchez, Porcello One of the better 5 man rotations in a long time
-
Not good for the White Sox
-
Seems impossible the Tigers were able to get Price without giving up either Castellanos or Suarez, but seems like they did.

QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 08:49 PM) Marte dealt by Pittsburgh and they get zobrist, wonder what the whole deal is. This stinks though I can't believe they gave up Marte already.
-
Well, that absolutely sucks that the Tigers got Price. This has been a very bad trade deadline.
-
Reports that Tigers might lead for Price. I would prefer they don't get him, as they have the money to bring him back (assuming they'd let Max go then).

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 07:19 PM) Rendon plays 2B. Cabrera makes no sense for them unless Zimmerman will be out for a long time. Zimmerman tore his hamstring, he might not be back this year I believe.

QUOTE (Charlie Haeger's Knuckles @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 08:04 PM) Sad state of affairs for the Sox when the team that needed OF help the most traded for Chris Denorfia instead of De Aza or Viciedo. So it looks like the Sox will have 3 non-tenders this off-season. Beckham and Viciedo have been awful this year, so it's no shock they're not in high demand. ADA hasn't been very good either. It's been a very bad year for the Sox in terms of developing assets at the MLB level outside of the core guys.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 03:23 AM) Domingo German only pitched three innings for the Marlins A ball affiliate. He only went three innings in his last start as well, but other than that he's been a starter. I am not saying he was pulled because of an imminent trade, but he's either on an innings limit or something curious is going on. Chris Cotillo @ChrisCotillo · 1h Told #Marlins prospect Domingo German has innings limit and is throwing only 3 innings per game for rest of year. Doesn't appear to be trade

QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 03:01 AM) Mitchell is killing it back in AA, but I don't know if it means anything. I'm all for seeing him get a September call-up and hoping for a miracle
-
Abreu's hustle is impressive. Amazing how much better he's running compared to a few months ago.
-
Davidson now at least 3 for his last 38 with no homers. Hard to get excited about a prospect that has hit under .200 in 3 out of 4 months this year.
-
With Rienzo warming up, it makes it very unlikely Danks is traded IMO.

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 12:18 AM) I hope he pitches well enough to be in it. He's been very solid this year and overall has been remarkably good for a guy who hadn't worked out as a starter in a very long time before he got here. Will be interesting to see what Sox think of him considering that big factor - that he's without the proper physical prep for a season-long workload as a starter. As far as today goes, the delay of the game is probably related to the outcome. He's had several times where it seems like he has reached the mound ill-prepared for the game. It only figures that he'd get mindf***ed by the rain delay. Hopefully he bounces back strongly for the next one. Noesi doesn't have a big enough gap between his fastball and change-up tonight. Only 6 mph by my calculations.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 12:07 AM) Been his achilles heel since he was a Mariner. Good stuff, just gets in trouble early or late with that big inning. Agreed, he strikes me as a number 5 starter on a mediocre team. Cooper has done well with him.
-
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 12:02 AM) Guess it's officially time for Rick to sell? Wouldn't shock me at all if tonight's outcome impacts things. Hawk talked about a similar situation a few years ago that resulted in KW not making a particular trade cause the Sox won a game before deadline
-
Tigers have seen Noesi a few times this year, and they just jumped all over that first pitch tonight
-
Noesi is not afraid of a big inning. He's been a pleasant surprise, but I will be disappointed if he is in the rotation next year
-
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 08:09 PM) Cubs trade for Felix Doubront. Standard Theo buy very low move Hawk's a big fan of Felix. Not a bad move for the Cubs, especially as the piece going back doesn't seem to be a big deal.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 03:38 AM) I hope we trade him to some NL team. I'm sure he'll be hot for 2 weeks after he goes to his new team and it'd suck if the Sox had to play that team. If/when the Sox let Beckham go, none of us should be mad at the organization if he goes elsewhere and succeeds. The Sox have given him every possible chance to prove he's MLB starting caliber. Who knows, he might go to a team like Toronto next year and his 25 home runs based on their power hitting approach. If so, good for him...no regrets about going in another direction with Semien, Sanchez or Johnson.
