QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 05:57 PM) I would really like to hear the reasoning why Lindner nixed the deal in the first place. Rumor is that Lindner is looking to sell the team, and he believes the team's value diminishes by getting rid of Griffey Jr.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 05:48 PM) Which means we would have to go 17-32 for the Indians to catch us. That isn't really that scary. If we go 17-32 the rest of the way, we don't deserve to make it. I'm actually happy that we don't play the Indians until the end of the season. The clearest way they could make a serious run at the Sox is if they were to sweep the Sox in a series, etc.

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 05:46 PM) Please, if you're the board pessimist, then I'm the vice-pessimist. And not even I am threatened by the Indians anymore. Fair enough. Please refer to me as Mr. Pessimist, thanks Anyways, wouldn't it be nice to see the Indians lose a game or two, especially when down 5 runs late in the game?

Actually, I bet our lineup is: Ozuna Iguchi Everett PK Rowand Dye AJP Crede Uribe

QUOTE(upnorthsox @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 05:38 PM) Not sure they can catch us but that's also why this ain't over and why this is still the biggest part of our schedule right now. If we can come out of August still with a double digit lead we'll be alright but if we let it slip to 5 or 6 we're in a dogfight til the end with no chance to rest up and prepare for the playoffs. When I say this, I get bashed cause I'm the board pessimist. However, it's exactly the point I've been trying to make, and everyone planning the postseason roster and when to start benching starters is getting a little ahead of themselves. One good thing is that the A's and Angels have a lot more games against each other this season, so it would make the wild card lead even more for the Sox (in the extreme circumstance that the Indians were to catch the White Sox).

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 05:38 PM) Maybe they heard the collective "WHAT THE f***?!" from the Reds fanbase when they heard they could've traded Griffey and didn't? With the way Griffey has played this year, I'm not so sure they're so eager to get rid of him. If I was the Reds GM, there's not a chance in hell I'd trade Griffey unless you got a starting pitcher back in return. I actually think there's a better chance of the Sox trading Contreras and prospects for Griffey in the offseason.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 05:32 PM) I think we'll see almost all of them playing big roles in September just to get people rest since we have that luxury and since we don't want people to be hurt worse. And on Marte...his problem remains throwing strikes to left handers, in my opinion. Every pitch he throws is either too far outside or too far inside. He still has the pitches and the velocity, but his control has gone to sh*t. Marte can't throw his slider to lefties now. In order to throw it for a strike, he has to hang it. His best sliders to lefties go outside. He's also more effective vs righties because his fastball tends to bolt high and to Marte's left. Against lefties, that pitch nearly hits them. However, against righties, he gets them to chase the pitch a lot of the time.

This trade will likely all revert back to whether or not the Reds ownership wants to trade Griffey Jr. I'm not sure why everyone thinks they'll change their mind about 2 weeks after saying no to the trade the first time.

QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 05:28 PM) Guess it's too early to find out the lineups huh? Timo Ozuna Timo Widger Timo Rowand Blum Crede Uribe

I'm sure you'll get bashed for this, but I completely agree with your post. The Indians are swinging the bats great right now, and their bullpen isn't blowing games left and right like they did last season. If they're able to win 80 pct of their games against Tampa and KC the rest of the way, they could definitely make a substantial run at our division lead.
-
For everyone saying they don't mind if the Indians win so that they make the playoffs, I couldn't disagree more. The more the Indians lose now, the sooner the Sox could likely clinch. Thus, more rest for our starters, etc. I still have the uneasy feeling that the division race will get a little too close for comfort. Why can't teams f***ing finish off the Indians? They've come from behind after being down 5 three times in the last week, I believe.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 05:23 PM) Hes completely worthless to other teams. He's old, a non-prospect and was s***ty in MLB action. And Quick, I didnt know you were still around? Milkman was being sarcastic!

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 05:08 PM) The Sox have shown a history where they directly link their payroll to their attendance revenues. Just from an amatuer observation based on this years attendance trends, we should be looking at a payroll of at least $90 million next year. If the Sox can somehow make it to, or win, the World Series, we should be around $100 million. That would be quite the increase in payroll. As much as I would love it, I highly doubt it would get that high. I'd be surprised if we were at 80 million next season.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 05:18 PM) It gives us a chance to get somemore guys post season eliglible if we need them. It probably won't be necesary, but it could be useful once we know what our particular match up will be. I understand your point, but I just can't see Ozzie straying from our typical 25 man roster this season if we make the playoffs. He's a very loyal manager, and I don't believe he'd not include someone like Timo or Ozuna or Vizcaino on the postseason roster.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 05:14 PM) This is pretty much my line of thought on the matter. We might see DL time for Pods, Crede, Everett, and/or Hermanson in late August and September. Why put them on the DL? With the expanded rosters, that wouldn't benefit us very much. The division won't be clinched by the end of August, so I don't think there's a chance we take our foot off the accelerator so soon.
-
Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled with winning 2 out of 3 against the Yankees (especially considering every game could have easily, easily been won by either team in this series). A prolonged slump is basically the only way we won't make the playoffs. Sure, it would be nice if the Indians lost against this season! However, we need to start getting better offensive production, no doubt about it.

Can someone please edit the title of this thread?

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 05:01 PM) Yeah, get the tougher games out of the way first, then DL him. What happens if Jenks completely tanks as the closer in his first attempt? Then, we have another two weeks with our bullpen is disarray against some very tough teams.

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 04:42 PM) Guys, I don't think we should give up any prospects at all for possibly one of the greatest baseball players ever. Most people think we can get any player for guys like Baj, Borchard, Adkins, and J. Burke.
-
QUOTE(ChiSox_Sonix @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 04:32 PM) As much as it'd be great to have Griffey here, with his injurt history taken into account, I'm really hesitant to give up Chris Young as part of the deal. We have plenty of OF depth in our organization. Also, the OF position is probably the easiest in baseball to fill via free agency. There's no guarantee that Young will even make it to the majors. Griffey would help this team more this season and likely the next few seasons at the MLB level!

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 04:22 PM) So is 22 in a row, and 17 in a row at 3rd. No, I know. I was just saying that for someone with the ability to steal 22 in a row, going 4 for 12 on the bases is almost an unbelievable stat. Pods is a much better base runner than that, and I think it's mostly mental with him now. I'm much more concerned with his approach at the plate than I am his base running. You have to reach base in order to be a threat on the bases.
-
QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 04:07 PM) Geez, the guy goes 4/12 for a stretch, and all the sudden he cant steal anymore. He did steal 22 in a row at one time. 4 for 12, in such a short stretch, is almost unheard of in terms of stealing bases.

QUOTE(SpringfieldFan @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 03:59 PM) I have just read the first few posts but the thread is already a classic: I think we have some "sister" fans in Cincinnati! I'll never forget those games at the end of the season when Kearns and Valentin helped beat the Cubs in extra innings at Wrigley. I know it's not cool on this board to say you hate the Cubs.....but I HATE THE f***ING CUBS!

QUOTE(mwolfson @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 03:44 PM) Trade: • RHP Orlando Hernandez, SS Juan Uribe, RHP prospect Jeff Bajenaru and OF prospect Jerry Owens to the Texas Rangers for SS Michael Young and a prospect to be named later Now, do you really think that the Rangers would do this trade? I'm not sure they'd give up Young for McCarthy and Chris Young.

QUOTE(ceffa2000 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 04:33 AM) White Sox Probable Pitchers Hopefully Duke's okay. Maybe his shoulder is hurting again. Sweet. Man, if McCarthy has to pitch at Fenway, he's going to be in for a long day. This is not the time in the schedule to have an injury in the rotation.
