  1. QUOTE(caulfield12 @ May 4, 2007 -> 03:29 PM) Buehrle is the heart and soul of this franchise, along with Konerko. You can't put a dollar value on that...which is why replacing him with XXX player doesn't make a whole lot of sense, because starting pitching is so fragile. Everyone was betting against Gil Meche going from a 4-5 starter to the "ace" of the Royals, and he's been exactly that pitcher they projected (around a 2 ERA) but they're still well off the pace. Why did the Royals make that move? To show they were again a legitimate, viable "breathing" franchise. Well, the White Sox need to prove to their fans that they're going to be a "player" in the future of the AL Central or if we're going back to Maybe These Kids Can Play, Version 4. Signing Buehrle makes sense because... 1) He's been a critical part of our franchise his entire career 2) We're not going to end up keeping Crede, the other "born and bred" Sox player 3) He's very durable, and still in his prime, as opposed to Vazquez and Contreras 4) He's representative of the "blue collar" work ethic Sox fans most identify with 5) He doesn't have a violent motion or pitch that creates maximum torque like the Liriano slider or Felix Hernandez slurve 6) He's lefthanded and would be a great tutor/mentor for Danks and Gio 7) Any pitcher you can name that we would trade for (Peavy, Oswalt, etc.) would cost us way too much 8) All indications are he would like to come back if the White Sox make a "fair" offer near market value The ones I crossed out will not be a few of the prime reasons KW makes Buehrle an offer this offseason, the others mean nothing to him and rightly so. You don't give a player big money for what he's done in the past, you do it for what you believe he'll do in the future, Frank Thomas was also a critical part of the franchise for his entire career but was let go because KW believed he could find players that could outproduce Frank for what he projected him to do. You don't toss money at a player because he's home grown. #4 is a crock of s***. #7 I don't necessarily believe, there will be some damn good pitchers on the market over the next 2 years, if the Sox are willing to spend equal or a bit more cash than Buehrle will be getting this offseason you can probably acquire a damn talented starter such as Peavy. But the main reason I don't count #7 is because this doesn't seem to be KW's philosophy, he's not going to trade/sign big time/money pitchers and the loss of Buehrle is not going to change this.
  2. QUOTE(joeynach @ May 4, 2007 -> 02:50 PM) So u are in favor of giving MB before any other pitcher potentially available a 5 Year 75 Mil deal? Well then we are lucky you are not the GM. Whats wrong with MB on a 3 year deal at 11-12 per year with an option. Because he will never accept that deal, it's not proper compensation for his projected future success. If you don't think a #2 starter (your words) is not worth 4yrs at $13 a year (your words again) then you don't know what 230IP, a 3.50-3.80 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP is worth in this current market. Hell, just looking at it from a marketing point of view it would be a great move you'd be locking up a likable, clean, fan/clubhouse friendly pitcher for the long term. A player to make the face of the franchise, it would make Brooks Boyer's life a whole lot easier. 5 years @ $14M a year I'm making the deal. He's going to go out there every 5th day and give your team one hell of a chance to win while at the same time being a tremendous presence in the clubhouse and in the community. Those types of players are not easily acquired now a days.
  3. QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ May 4, 2007 -> 12:55 PM) Nothing really stands out though for me when it comes to him. I know he is always good but he seems to me to be just below great. Again I am not researching anything and it is just an opinion. Has he been an MVP or had a great postseason? I guess I would say he is just a really solid player in my mind. He has 1 MVP, has been in the top 10 of MVP voting 5 times, has been voted onto 5 All-Start teams (more than Thome and as many as Frank Thomas and Bagwell) and had an outstanding postseason the year they won the World Series. The guy has a career .946 OPS which is the highest career number for any player who spent the predominate portion of his career at Thirdbase. I guess you could ask any Mets fan how good Chipper is.
  4. They're allowed to hit homeruns, hell I welcome homeruns just for once get a few guys on base then hit it out. That's all I ask.
  5. QUOTE(joeynach @ May 3, 2007 -> 11:08 PM) Im not sure if u want him, well i would for the same deal we gave Vazquez. Ill take Mark for 3 years 33-36 Mil but no more. Hes not a real #1, not a real Ace that just moe people down when you need them. Who make people look silly, who throws pitches that are unhittable. Id rather have an Oswalt, Halladay, Zambrano, Webb, Sabathia, Santana, etc as my big pitcher making big money. Buehrle gives up a ton of hits and IMO any guy throwing 88 mph tops, which he apparently now has trouble doing, is going to have trouble in the AL & will always need to be way too perfect. I love mark, but I love him making no more than 11 mil and being a #2 or lower. Please stop looking to him as the be all end all of pitching, give me Felix Hernandez over MB and any of the above mentioned legit aces. MB for 5 years/70 Mil no thanks not even 4 years 52 Mil. Go get someone that dominates for that price and keeps the ball from being hit in our hitter friendly park. You have no grasp on the value of consistent starting pitching in this current state of major league baseball.
  6. QUOTE(BearSox @ May 3, 2007 -> 09:50 PM) oh well, if my answer isnt good enough, you can disregard it. You're somewhere between 18 and 21 years old. There mystery solved.
  7. Ah, the entire lineup right now is playing so bad that I'm not sure Ross would even be effective if you tossed him in there. If guys like Konerko, Dye, Pierzynski and Iguchi are all struggling at the same time there's nothing that makes me think Gload would do any different. I'll take the 26 year old power lefty who's 5 years away from free agency.
  8. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ May 3, 2007 -> 03:07 PM) 21 years old, listed at 5'11", 185 lbs. And there's no way in hell he's 5'11".
  9. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ May 3, 2007 -> 03:28 PM) Just curious, and I don't intend to read through this thread, but, at what point does the scope of accountability begin to focus on the players on the field and not the ownership, General Manager, coaching staff, etc.? It is first and foremost the player's responsibility to produce on the field, however when the offense hits a serious low like it's at right now something needs to be done to attempt to pull them out of the funk. Since the players can not be terminated and KW isn't willing to give up on any future pieces to acquire new position players, the coach in charge of hitting takes the fall. In the end there is only so much you can do to hold the players accountable, the coaches on the other hand can be replaced with ease.

QUOTE(bmags @ May 3, 2007 -> 01:13 PM) aww kalapse...i think maggie gyllenhal is cute. as SIN. I think she's pretty hideous but that's just me.
  11. QUOTE(caulfield12 @ May 3, 2007 -> 11:52 AM) The Brewers finally have a real chance to compete this year... They're already 5 games up in the NL Central and aren't even playing at optimal efficiency just yet. Ben Sheets has yet to get it together, Craig Counsel is still the 3B with Braun so damn close to ready for the bigs, they haven't quite figured out the whole outfield situation just yet and some of their younger players have struggled a bit at the plate to start the year. They're damn good and only getting better.
  12. Uh-Oh, looks like Vick may be caught up in a few fibs. So he says he doesn't live there and that only his Cousin (I believe) uses that Mansion however one of Vick's charitable organizations, VicksK9Kennels is based out of that address and all dogs collected by the charity are sent there. So the dogs he's been collecting through his charitable organization which is for the betterment of the animals and completely opposed to Dog Fights have been used for dog fights at Michael Vick's home. I can't wait until he's out of the NFL, it looks like his brother is pretty much done, hopefully he can follow suit some time sooner rather than later.
  13. QUOTE(caulfield12 @ May 3, 2007 -> 11:31 AM) We need a totally different type of player. Hall strikes out too much, he's not a "young" player anymore and we would be weakening what I would have to consider to be another strength, our infield defense. This would end up weakening our pitching staff as well, as Buerhle and Garland tend to give up a lot of groundballs. The Brewers also have a big time prospect in Ryan Braun waiting in the wings in AAA (he's been lighting it up down there and should get the call sometime soon), I highly doubt they'd have much interest in Crede anyway.

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ May 3, 2007 -> 08:45 AM) However, I am already counting down the days for "The Dark Knight" but that doesn't come out for a year+ YES! This. I really have no interest in the Spiderman series, I've found the movies to be rather weak and family oriented which is cool and all but it's not the sort of thing I'm interested in seeing. Perhaps if they had gone with David Fincher as the director like they had originally planned I would have a little more interest in it. I absolutely love what Christopher Nolan is doing with the Batman series and from all accounts "Dark Knight" is going to be amazing. He casted Heath Ledger to play The Joker because he's "fearless" as an actor, Nolan's own words. He wants to bring a darker, more sadistic Joker to the big screen than the goofy, off the wall villain that we saw Nicholson play in '89. He wants to make Joker a true killer, an on edge, short-fused madman with truly psychopathic tendencies. Aaron Eckhart (Thank You for Smoking) as Harvey Dent should be a pretty good move as well, he has the chiseled good looks that Two-Face should have before his accident and is a pretty solid actor in his own right. Though Maggie Gyllenhaal is rather tough to look at, I'll actually be able to respect and take her seriously as an actress as opposed to Katie Holmes. It doesn't hurt that Christian Bale is my absolute favorite actor right now and has been since he played Patrick Bateman, he just needs to work on his "Batman Voice" which was pretty unusual in the first movie. I don't get into a lot of the Comic Book Superhero movies but this is definitely one franchise that I look forward to seeing more from in the future.
  15. QUOTE(caulfield12 @ May 3, 2007 -> 11:05 AM) Yes, and at mid-season, the market wasn't totally out of whack. Soriano would have agreed to a more reasonable contract if it would get him to a contending team, and for fewer years, if he knew that the White Sox really wanted him and would keep him for AT LEAST 2-3 seasons (they could have given him a partial no-trade clause too to compensate for the dollars). I don't buy this one bit. Diego Bentz, Soriano's agent at the time would never have let his client accept such a below market value contract coming up on his first year of free agency (with a lack of similar players in that market and such a huge premium being put on leadoff type hitters he was easily going to be the #1 player on the market). Soriano was looking at a huge payday considering his career year last season and I don't see why he would have given up 4-5 years and $60M-$75M to play for a "contending team" like the Sox for a few seasons when he could just sign with a pretty damn good team like the Angels for a s***load more money only a few months later. And from all accounts Jim Bowden didn't just want McCarthy straight up for Soriano, he wanted another large piece (Fields) included as well. KW has actually hinted recently that if the deal had been McCarhty for Soriano straight up he probably would have pulled the trigger.
  16. Joe Crede continues his spiral into Sprague-dom. Ed Sprague played his first full season in the majors in 1993 as a 25 year old. Joe Crede played his first full season in the majors in 2003 as a 25 year old. Ed Sprague's career numbers as of May 3rd, 1997 (29 years old): G AB Runs Hits 2B 3B HR RBI BB BA OBA Slug% OPS SB% 670 2368 293 594 134 6 87 336 203 .251 .321 .423 .743 33.33 Joe Crede's career numbers as of May 3rd, 2007 (29 years old): G AB Runs Hits 2B 3B HR RBI BB BA OBA Slug% OPS SB% 678 2356 302 613 121 3 106 353 137 .260 .307 .449 .756 33.33
  17. QUOTE(danman31 @ May 3, 2007 -> 01:02 AM) We've been over this. Missouri>Iowa. It's not even really debatable. I know we have St. Louis, but KC isn't bad lol. You do have Jack In the Box, which is a HUGE plus in my opinion.
  18. QUOTE(Texsox @ May 2, 2007 -> 10:55 PM) It seems like a good coach would keep things positive in public and not embarrass or call out his guys. Yes, just like Ozzie.
  19. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ May 2, 2007 -> 09:34 PM) Konerko hit 234 in 2003. So yes, one of the main kogs can go into a season long slump. It has happened. So why again cant it happen again. Because Hawk keeps saying Konerko is too damn good a hitter to have a bad season at the plate, apparently Hawk can't remember back far enough to recall Kong's season long slump just 3 years ago.

    I Love New York

QUOTE(3E8 @ May 2, 2007 -> 09:02 PM) Wow, I always thought the same thing. The friends and family seem to always have a line ready to say, and they're always so incredibly outgoing. I know the money is exciting and everything, but isn't there at least one family member nervous to be on TV or not know what to say with all that going on? YES. I said this the first time I saw the show. When you watch other game shows like Who Wants to be a Millionaire you'd at least have some nervous, shaky contestants and the family/friends in the audience/phone acted some what normal, subdued. The people on Deal or no Deal are so incredibly enthused and over the top that I just can't believe it's real. I haven't seen the show in a while but from what I'm told it's started to get even more ridiculous with some of the contestants on the show, whether they be a Howie Mandelle (sp?) look-a-like who just happens to be selected or some crazy woman who pulls numbers out of a box as a way of selecting briefcases. I just refuse to believe that show is real.
  21. WinAVI Video Converter is probably the best I've ever used.
  22. QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ May 2, 2007 -> 08:22 PM) Walking injury machine and I believe he disappears as bad as Bonds in the postseason although I have nothing to substaniate this. He's always injured yet he still puts up crazy numbers and more plate appearances each season than a certain 3B who's last name rhymes with greedy oh and another that rhymes with stolen. Maybe it's just the way of the modern thridbaseman. His career .288/.411/.459/.870 postseason stat line seems pretty stout and he has had some great postseason moments but I guess when you play in 20 postseason series over the course of a career you're bound to have a bad one here or there unless of course you're Derek Jeter.
  23. Chipper Jones is an amazing hitter and Freddy Garcia now knows this. Just watching Chipper, it's amazing he's not talked about even more than he is because he's one of the most disciplined and pure hitters I've ever seen. I can't believe people think Joe Crede is anywhere near the player Chipper is, even at his age Larry is still far superior to Joe.
  24. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ May 2, 2007 -> 05:47 PM) Some 50 year old woman, oh its a guy, I think calls in. Now he is talking about Pods being the key to our offense coming back. Now he thinks we can get Carl Crawford. Good luck with that. It will cost you Danks and some other talent. One of my biggest pet peeves is people who have no idea what trade value a player holds or even a basic understanding of how ballclubs go about acquiring players via trade yet they can not wait to toss out all the completely ridiculous trade ideas they thought up while taking a s***. The easiest way to prove that you don't follow baseball is to come up with a trade proposal because the second I hear Broadway, Anderson and a lower tier prospect for Carl Crawford/Rocco Baldelli I know you're completely clueless.
