QUOTE(chimpy2121 @ Sep 3, 2006 -> 11:34 PM) Did we get him or not? I cant comprehend this situAtion righr now? Yes or no.... no

Scot Shields blew a save just yesterday allowing 3 hits and 2 BB in 1 IP, does that mean he's not reliable? Is he bad? Relievers are going to give up runs, all of them are, the good ones are the guys who limit the mistakes and more often than not get you out of jams. Both Thornton and MacDougal have been great this year even if they have given up some runs late in games recently, it happens to all relievers.

QUOTE(greg775 @ Sep 3, 2006 -> 11:05 PM) Help me out here. You are saying McDougal, Thornton, Riske and Cotts have been good? If I am out of line, lemme know. I consider none of those four guys reliable. He said Cotts is "teh sux" which is not good.
-
I'm thinking your roommate was maybe a little dishonest with you. I doubt the Pats would trade him right now for a 2nd round pick and I highly doubt the Bears would pay such a price considering how much Jerry Angelo values his draft picks.

QUOTE(greg775 @ Sep 3, 2006 -> 09:16 PM) You really believe this?? Yes, I'm not so sure how you can say otherwise unless you haven't seen them pitch at all this season. MacDougal has been just SICK since the Sox acquired him, MacDougal: 1.50 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, .246 BAA, 14K:2BB all in 18 innings of work. Thornton (since June 3rd): 2.70 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, .256 BAA, 23K:10BB in 30 innings of work. It took Thornton some time but over the past 3 months especially he has been just awesome. Why exactly do you think they're bad again?

If only a few Sox players would bring that sort of passion to the game.

QUOTE(greg775 @ Sep 3, 2006 -> 07:07 PM) I said halfway reliable starters we have two (Jon and Mark). Yes all those things were evident in June and KW could have done something about it. How is that Oz's fault. Rather than blame Ozzie which is the easy way out IMO, I personally don't think our team is pennant caliber when our starters are average to below average. Face facts. Our bullpen sucks with the exception of Jenks. Our starters have been s*** with the exception of Jon; despite the BA love, he has not been a productive hitter; Pods has been terrible. Uribe hasn't hit s*** this season. AJ has been pretty good. That leaves us with the four studs Dye, Thome, Konerko, Crede. They have had powerful years with the bat, but unable to carry a team with no starting pitching and a weak bullpen. Pitching always has been the name of the game. We ain't got it this year and HOW IS THAT OZZIE'S FAULT???? I love Oz. Go Sox! These are not facts especially seeing how MacDougal and Thornton are 2 of the better setupmen in all of basebal.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Sep 3, 2006 -> 05:50 PM) I was trying to avoid a clash and flames. No one is going to step up and defend Ozzie anyway so there's not much differing of opinion on the board right now.

QUOTE(BobDylan @ Sep 3, 2006 -> 05:43 PM) It's the win verses the loss that gets a pitcher that tag. You can't say McCarthy's outing was better than Garcia's because no baseball game is the same. That's logic. That makes sense, you penalize the pitcher because his offense sucks. I assume Roger Clemens had a s*** year last year because he was only 5 games over .500. If Dye does not come through with a single up the middle in the top of the 9th in game 4 of the WS, Freddy gets a N/D. Judging a pitcher strickly by whether he gets the win or not is what gets GMs fired and puts teams in holes personel wise that they can not recover from. It's cool you can have all the Russ Ortiz' you want I mean he may give up 6 runs a game but hey he gets the win and that's all that matters therefore he must be a good pitcher.
-
QUOTE(BobDylan @ Sep 3, 2006 -> 05:37 PM) I would, but Johan Santana, a pitcher who most would obviously note as a "Big Game Pitcher" didn't lose to Brandon McCarthy, who isn't a "Big Game Pitcher". Haha, McCarthy goes 8 innings and allows 1 run but does not get the win so he's not a "big game pitcher". That's some nice logic. Funny what 1 run of support does for a pitcher, McCarthy gets 1 run from the offense in his outing Vs the Twins in September and gets a N/D yet Freddy puts up the exact same line in game 4 of the world series and gets 2 runs and gets the win earning him the "big game pitcher" tag. Terrific.

QUOTE(BobDylan @ Sep 3, 2006 -> 05:21 PM) On Sept. 5th, 2005 Brandon McCarthy pitched against Boston. At the time the Sox were 8.5 games ahead of Cleveland. While in the grand scheme of things it might've been an important game, but with a comfy 8.5 game lead, I can hardly see that as a "big game". Check that, they were 9.5 ahead. EDIT 2: When things actually got hot, McCarthy recroded one loss and one no decision in a loss in late September against pretty average teams (Minnesota, Detroit) Yeah and those outings against Minnesota and Detroit were pretty horrid too. The no decision was a amazing duel at the Cell between Brandon McCarthy and the best pitcher in baseball over the past 5 years, Johan Santana. Brandon went 8 innings allowing 4 hits and 1 run the loss to the Tigers he went 6 1/3 and allowed 3R the Sox scored a grand total of 3 runs for him in those two outings combined, just another reason why a pitcher's W/L record means nothing. You're telling me you wouldn't take either of those 2 lines from any of the Sox current pitchers tomorrow?

QUOTE(BearSox @ Sep 3, 2006 -> 05:05 PM) Just because Juan has a strong arm makes him a good fielder? He has 11 errors this season, and you can even make a case for more with some of the balls he thrown away on ordinary DP's, and some of the other decisions he has made. And he has played lazy sloppy defense at times. Plus, he offense is horrible. He is even worse then Brian Anderson was earlier this season. At least Anderson was able to take a walk. And when you say offense isn't a problem, you are dead wrong. Since the all-star break, how many rpg has this team been averaging? I bet it is less then 5, which is pretty bad. 3 runs and reling on the long ball isn't going to win you many games, no matter how bad the pitching is. The Sox have averaged 4.92 runs per game since the break which is not all that bad it'd be good for the 4th best in the AL in '05. Jim Thome has been hurt for a good portion of the second half which does not help the offense one bit and would go a long way towards dropping the runs per game .7.

QUOTE(BobDylan @ Sep 3, 2006 -> 05:12 PM) Worse at the plate than BA was earlier in the year? Do you watch the games or just rely on ESPN.com's Gamecast? Jesus, I argue what one person says and don't spell it out for all the other people that might not be willing to take things in context. I've never said McCarthy would not be an upgrade. I just don't think he's the "answer" everyone makes him out to be. The "answer" frankly, is an ACE. I'm still confused as to how the games last September don't count as big game experience.
-
I've never seen a second of any episode or movie, I'm kind of proud of that.
-
QUOTE(BobDylan @ Sep 3, 2006 -> 04:57 PM) That should be in green. Seriously. McCarthy is not a savior. He has no experience under his belt and he, himself cannot bring the team ERA down a full run, let alone a half a run or a quarter of a run. So his 42.2 IP and 1.69 ERA over the final month or so of the season last year does not count as experience? He may not be a savior but to say he has no experience just is not true seeing how he was the Sox' best SP while they were sucking down the stretch last year.

QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 3, 2006 -> 04:37 PM) STILL IN FIRST PLACE IN THE WILD CARD!!!!!!!!!!! The Sox are 22 games over .500 and still havn't played their best ball yet, once this team hits its stride . . . LOOK OUT!!111

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Sep 3, 2006 -> 04:33 PM) How long until Miguel Cabrera is a free agent? He just said he cried tears of joy when Ozzie won the WS. It might be worth a couple of years of ridiculous moves if the Sox had a shot at signing him. We've still got 2 more years if I'm not mistaken and seeing how he's basically minny Manny, I expect him to get Manny money.

QUOTE(3E8 @ Sep 3, 2006 -> 04:10 PM) Does anyone have any thoughts/opinions on Howard being the first player to possibly break Maris' home run record without the use of steriods? Also, before todays game, Howard had more home runs away from the small park in Philly and besides Citizen's Bank the AL East stadiums are a b**** to hit home runs in. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Sep 3, 2006 -> 01:33 PM) Ryan Howard just hit ANOTHER homerun he now has 2 on the day as well as 3 RBIs. He now has 51 HRs and 132 RBIs and it's only September 3rd, if he gets REAL hot he could become the first non-steroid user to ever hit 62 HRs in a single season. He is a monster. Ryan Howard's HRs often go 430+ feet so I doubt many people would play the "Citizen's Bank" card when talking about Howards accomplishments. He's just an amazing specimen, the best pure power hitter in the game and is a damn good all-around hitter at the same time. The most amazing thing about him is the amount of home runs he hits the other way for a hitter of his magnitude that's just insane.

Is there not one person out there who's willing to defend Ozzie Guillen?
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 3, 2006 -> 04:16 PM) "Freddy was left in the 8th in order to get some more confidence. He's going through a tough stretch right now, and he's going to need that confidence for the rest of the season". That makes total sense, hats off to Ozzie for hooking his boy Freddy up with some confidence today, we're going to need him WHEN WE'RE BACK IN THE WORLD SERIES! YEAH JUMP ON THE MOTHER f***ING TRAIN!

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Sep 3, 2006 -> 04:12 PM) I really love watching the kid pitch, but man, he just hasn't had any luck the last few games, and he hasn't been able to bail himself out either. That slow roller to Uribe that no one could get? That was just painful to watch on a very good pitch. McCarthy has a tough time succeeding when he's put in the game with runners on base which makes sense seeing how he's been a starter his entire career and you're not often put in that position when starting a ballgame.
-
Ozzie Guillen single handedly won the World Series last year, what the f*** have any of you ever done in the big leagues? Yeah? That's what I thought once you all get world series rings then you can talk.
-
This team has no sense of urgency, it's rather pathetic. Gotta love it. After a pathetic loss to one of the worst teams in the history of baseball they go ahead and plug their retarded ass series on Comcast. IT'S A MI MANERA TIME b****ES!
-
Albert Pujols in his 4th AB flew out to the warning track in LF so he's 3-4, 3 HRs and will likely not get another AB. Fabio Castro gave it up for the Phils in the 9th with the braves getting 4 runs to tie it up and send it to the bottom half of the final frame, a Jimmy Rollins single tied it up and Shane Victorino came to the plate with runners on 2nd and 3rd and Ryan Howard on deck. Sadly Victorino ended it with a single to right leaving Howard in the on deck circle he finishes the day 4-4 with 3 HRs and 4 RBI.
-
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Sep 3, 2006 -> 02:46 PM) Howard still has another game to put on a show. I totally forgot they were playing a double header today, Howard could end up with 54-55 HRs before the day is through. Also Albert Pujols has 3 more innings left today as well.
