  1. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 03:15 PM) If you look at the line up, Konerko is playing DH. So if you want to sit Konerko in favor of Dayan, that would be an interesting argument. As for Dayan starting at 3b, he hasnt been that great defensively (arguably a liability) and I believe the game Kalapse is referring to the other team was starting a lhp. I want Dayan to get more at bats, I just think that the majority of those at bats should be coming from the DH spot, which is being used by Konerko tonight. Even if it was against a LHP, you'd think you'd trade a downgrade in offense for a major upgrade in defense with a ground ball pitcher making his major league debut.
  2. Pierre 0/0 Vizquel 3/17, 2B, 4BB, 3K (.177) Rios 5/16, 2 2B, 2HR, 4K (.313) Konerko 9/33, 2 2B, 4HR, 5Bb, 6K (.273) Ramirez 2/3, HR Kotsay 3/15, 3B (.200) Castro 0/3, BB, 2K Jones 0/1 Beckham 0/1, BB
  3. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 03:06 PM) Im sure people want Dayan. I think with Torres out there you want the best defense possible. Bizarre that Viciedo was at 3B when the 25 year old ground ball pitcher made his major league debut a few days back.
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 12:19 PM) I'm not totally sure about that...I'm sure he signed a minor league deal before the season, so I think there are instances where guys on minor league deals can be sent up and down without having to clear waivers. Of course, that could be why he's to the DL and not AAA. Not after he was added to the 40 man and big league roster. He'd have to clear waivers, hence why he's on the DL.
  5. Yeesh, that read like a story from the Onion.
  6. For anyone curious of Edwin Jackson's inherited runners numbers this season, they're incredibly tame: (1st/2nd/3rd = where Edwin left the runner) 1 IR 1 IS (1 out, 1st) 1 IR 0 IS 1 IR 1 IS (1 out, 2nd) 1 IR 0 IS 1 IR 0 IS 2 IR 0 IS 1 IR 1 IS (0 out, 2nd) 3 IS/ 8 IR Completely eliminate those 3 runs and his ERA is still about five. To put things in perspective: JJ Putz allowed 3 runners he inherited from Gavin Floyd to score with 1 swing on April 23rd.
  7. QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 2, 2010 -> 03:32 PM) The lack of discipline is true. He swings at nearly 40% of pitches outside of the zone, that's pretty bad, but not unexpected. 432 players with at least 60 PA this season: Swing% 61.4% Francoeur 60.5% Jake Fox 60.0% Vlad 59.6% Delmon 58.4% Ivan 58.2% Chris Johnson 58.0% Dayan 57.7% Mike Sweeney 57.5% John Buck 57.2% Boesch 57.1% Stavinoha He has the 30th highest "out of zone swing%" out of those 432 this season (AJ's 10th)
  8. QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 09:54 PM) The Rios claim was not a $50 million block to the Tigers. The Rios claim was a Rios claim. The Sox are incredibly thorough in their player evaluations and they saw a very good chance Rios would recover, and they were right. No business makes $50-60 million dollar guesses. Yeah, people like to say it was a block but there's simply no way you make a $60M block, not a chance. Especially when you KNOW the team putting him on waivers is desperately cash strapped and not all that happy with the performance/attitude of said player. KW wanted Rios.
  9. QUOTE (AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 09:03 PM) In this economy, teams are less likely to claim players just to block other teams in fear of the other team saying take the contract like Alex Rios. This was mentioned at length on the MLB Network all last week with quotes from GM's. It happens less then you think. He doesn't have to clear waivers, just fall to the White Sox. Alex Rios had $60M left on his deal, Luke Scott: ~$1.5M. The guys with the big contracts will clear, I agree but when it's a small 1 year commitment there's no reason not to claim a great talent like Scott especially when he's under non-guaranteed team control for 2 more years. The Orioles aren't just going to dump Scott for nothing, he has a ton of value. Literally every team in the AL should put in a claim. Some like Vernon Well will clear with ease because there's a large multi-year commitment involved, those guys will be available not the cheap 1 year commitments.
  10. QUOTE (AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 08:57 PM) I didn't say it's going to be simple, but it's going to happen. And I'll be bumping everyone thread about them crying about the trade deadline when it's the unofficial trade deadline. More and more teams will fallout of contention in the next 30 days. Impact bats like Luke Scott, etc, will be available. Cry after August 30th if we don't do anything. There's seriously no reason for someone like Luke Scott to clear waivers.
  11. QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 07:45 PM) Would Fukudome make it through the waiver wire? With a $13.5M commitment for next year when he'll be 34 and his mediocre offensive production, I'd say yes.
  12. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 07:07 PM) I don't think so. In fact, I can't even think of the last person to play in the majors the same year he was drafted. Conor Gillaspie, 2008.
  13. QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 07:05 PM) I think based on several factors, the Sox are very likely to make a trade for a bat this month: 1) Kenny traded for Berkman on Saturday. He absolutely wants a new bat. 2) Kenny had success last season in the waiver process. It's a slippery slope, but he's willing to work it. 3) Based on several efforts recently, JR is willing to commit money to acquisitions for the right player. Except normally the guy you pick up is playing poorly and severely overpaid, ala Rios last season who also happened to be horrible through the end of the season. Sure we had success but not immediately. I wouldn't get my hopes up.
  14. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 06:39 PM) I think we just disagreed on the number of hours Kal. It's 47. I think mine is worded better, personally.
  15. QUOTE (Vance Law @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 05:17 PM) Can someone explain the particulars with Detroit or Minny potentially "blocking" someone from getting to us. They can put in a claim on somebody (say Derek Lee for example). They can then either move forward with acquiring Lee if the Cubs were actually intending to move him (like Rios last year) or they can remove their claim, correct? At that point no one has claimed Lee and can't the Cubs just attempt to send him through waivers again? The same team that just removed the claim they made on Lee couldn't do the same thing again, correct? Am I right in thinking that the only way to "block" someone from getting to the Sox is for that team to actually acquire the player? So between now and August 31st basically every player on a 40 man roster will be put on waivers at some point, sometimes it's to gauge interest, sometimes it's to sneak a player through so he can be traded. If say the Cubs put Derrek Lee on waivers every team in baseball has 47 hours to put in a claim, priority waiver claims goes to the NL first (since the Cubs are in the NL) starting with the team with the worst record through the team with the best record then to the AL team with the worst record and up to the AL team with the best record. So in this figurative scenario the Pirates would have #1 priority over the claim, San Diego 15th (thanks to their league best record, remember the Cubs don't count) and the White Sox would have 25th priority. Same goes for an AL claim, just the opposite. Any player on the 40 man roster must clear waivers before being traded, any good young player placed on waivers will likely be claimed by most teams in baseball so they will then be pulled back off waivers by the club and can not be traded that season. Any player that makes it through waivers unclaimed can be traded at will to any club they choose. So if Derrek Lee were out there and the Tigers or Twins thought the Sox had interest and wanted to block a claim they themselves could claim Derrek Lee. Then a number of options would be available: 1.) the Cubs could rescind the waiver on Lee, keeping him for the remainder of the season, you can only place a player on waivers ONCE 2.) they could work out a trade with the Tigers 3.) they could forfeit Derrek Lee's contract to the Tigers and Detroit would take on the entirety of his contract, this is the #1 reason a team would not attempt a block because they could end up being saddled with a s***ty contract all because they didn't want a division rival to MAYBE acquire said player. So the Tigers or Twins could block the Sox from getting someone simply by putting in a claim
  16. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 03:40 PM) The more I think about it and thanks to Kalapse I think, Torres will be called up to pitch the DH, Viciedo will be send down, and after the Torres gets sent back down, Teahen will be back. Torres up --> Viciedo down --> Torres down --> Sale up --> Teahen back --> ???
  17. QUOTE (BearSox @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 12:35 PM) who gets sent down? Honestly I might guess Viciedo
  18. QUOTE (pktmotion @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 11:58 PM) Anyone think Werth could clear waivers after Victorino comes back off the DL and Brown shows he can contribute? I think Werth could be a decent pickup. Everytime I check the box score for Philly Werth usually has 2-3 hits every game along with 1-3 RBIs. He could be our RF and Quentin can move exclusively to DH. I would think not seeing as how he's young, cheap ($7M this year, maybe $2.5M left when placed on waivers), comes with zero long term commitment and is one of the most productive outfielders in the game of baseball. (5th in wOBA) Also keep in mind that any young player we trade can not be on the 40 man roster as they're not going to get past the worst teams in the AL without getting claimed on the waiver wire. Only guys like Morel, Gilmore and Jor. Danks can be involved in trades. The likes of Flowers, Torres, Viciedo or Santos can not be traded unless it's to say the Orioles, so even if a very good hitter did clear waivers a few of our most desirable prospects would be off limits. Also don't expect any great or even good players with decent contracts to clear waivers, they should all be claimed rather quickly and any NL players would have to clear the entire NL and the 9 AL teams with worse records than us (possibly 8 if the Twins pass us) before we get the opportunity to put in a claim. Meaning guys like Dunn and LaRoche shouldn't get any where close to us, I don't foresee them being in play.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 06:04 PM) Konerko is a goner because of Viciedo. Danks may well be a goner because he hasn't shown any interest in a long term contract. And as for the first line, you freaked out about the practical joke, so what does that mean? Have the Sox? Aside from their low ball offer from last spring that is? Kind of a two way street, I don't think we know anything about those negotiations.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 05:56 PM) http://espn.go.com/blog/chicagowhite-sox/p...ehab-assignment Wha? Numbers are hard.
  21. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 04:39 PM) Even Kotsay should understand a reduced role. He doesn't deserve to play. He can pinch hit. Send down Lilly. Why in the world do we need Lilly up here now that we have Teahen back. Because Brent can play many positions and run very fast, Kotsay on the other hand would serve ZERO purpose (aside from designated towel snapper and cup hat distributor) with Teahen returning to the team. Anything Kotsay can do Teahen can do and in a lot of cases much better. Pinch hitters seriously have so little value in the AL and even then. Hence whey Lenny Harris and Mark Sweeney made their living in the NL.
  22. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 04:19 PM) Buying at the deadline is a perfectly fine strategy, especially when there weren't a ton of great fits at the deadline. You guys all talk about Thome, but he isn't exactly a world beater. He'd clearly be a lot better than Kotsay but he still hasn't been that amazing and no one could have even assumed he'd put up the numbers he has thus far this year. I liked some of the bats this off-season, but quite frankly, outside of Vladdy none of the cheaper DH options have lit the world on fire. I would have loved Matsui, he hasn't exactly been stellar either. The reality is we don't have a huge budget and our team was built to have a studly rotation, good defense, and nice bullpen. That can win a whole lot of games and our offense isn't near as bad as it was for the first two months of the season. It has issues, but a lot of teams have issues. Thome has a .401 wOBA (insanely high) in about 40 less PA than Kotsay this season. When comparing the production of each yeah, Thome's a world beater. I didn't see a .400 wOBA from Thome but I had him pegged at about .375 as part of a platoon (I broke this down more than a few times).
  23. Jackson is a Boras client, do not forget this.
  24. QUOTE (AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:39 PM) In this economy, teams are going to be less likely to pick guys off waivers in fear of taking on the rest of the contract. Yeah, the incredibly expensive guys, not the ones with maybe a million dollars left on their deal like LaRoche and Scott. The Orioles aren't just going to dump Scott off on someone if he's claimed, same should go for LaRoche, they have far more value than that.
  25. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:35 PM) Its over and done with. Crying about it doesnt change it. It would be nice, yes. Ok, it has been said. let it go Like it or not it's tied to the topic of the day and it's going to be brought up.
