QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Dec 22, 2005 -> 09:29 PM) What are your thoughts on Randle? It seems to me he's starting to piece it all together and I think he could be a heck of a baseketball player, but, his passes are real, real sloppy and I'm seeing some things when he's putting the ball on the floor that I don't like. You're probably seeing him much more than I, what do think we can expect from him not only this year but 2007 and beyond? that question wasn't directed to me, but let me take a stab. i think what we've seen so far is the slow maturation of a guy coming off of a missed season. he's had a few setbacks but has generally progressed well so far. that said, i'd expect a slight regression at the start of big ten play, due primarily to the night-in, night-out tough competition. by the end of the season, though, i think he will be a steady contributor and probably the team's best defender. down the line, his development as an offensive player is going to be key to his long-term future. he is freakish athletically, so he'll always score on putbacks, dunks and effort plays, but right now he can't be a primary offensive option (doesn't need to be) because teams can just zone the hell out of him. his jump shot is just plain ugly. he's the anti-jamar in that respect. i think randle has nba potential, primarily because he's 6-8, really athletic and plays great defense. however, if his offensive game doesn't improve he won't be in the league. my $.02. -

QUOTE(Goldmember @ Dec 22, 2005 -> 05:27 PM) loyalty goes two ways... exactly. when organizations make loyalty a priority, then i'll hold players to the same standard. until then, it is what it is and if you don't like it you should probably quit following sports and take up knitting or something.

to me the highlight of the game last night was dee ripping the team's ass right before halftime for letting that mizzou player drive untouched to the basket. i loved the fact that he was letting his teammates know that is not acceptable, even though they were up by 18. bravo, dee. -

QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Dec 20, 2005 -> 06:26 PM) I like Izzo and Crew's chances this year. But I think its the Big Ten that will be the power basketball division this year between MSU, Illinois, Indiana and a strong Michigan.... don't forget ohio state and iowa. those teams will be a factor in the league race this year. this is a very deep league. outside of nw, purdue and penn state the other eight teams are all decent to excellent. -

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Dec 13, 2005 -> 05:28 AM) Alrighty, Buckeye fans, what can I look forward to this Saturday? i'm not a buckeye fan but i live out here so i'm pretty familiar with ohio state. their best guy is terence dials, a 6-9 post player. dials is a beast and is among the best big men in the big ten along with davis, augustine and killingsworth. complementing dials is some pretty good outside shooting. osu had 10 threes in the second half last night against a dogs*** norfolk state team. the best outside shooting is guard sylvester mayes, although he comes off the bench. mayes is a juco transfer playing his first year. you should also keep an eye on je'kel foster, a very strong outside shooter and a good "glue" player for them. osu's point guard is jamar butler. he's good and talented and runs the team well. he's also offensively talented but not always asked to do that. i'm not sure how good osu is this year because they haven't played anybody. their best wins are over virginia tech and st joe's, and an overtime win over butler. the isu game will also be osu's third of the week. they played norfolk last night, belmont wednesday then come back with isu saturday. this is by far their busiest week so far. also, osu just finished finals, so they won't have that distraction. -

QUOTE(SnB @ Dec 10, 2005 -> 09:08 AM) how the hell has OSU only played 3 games? osu underscheduled early because the start of the college season coincides with their fall quarter finals. it is odd, though. i share concern about the game with oregon today. they've had a week to sit around and they love to run. people might point to the loss to georgetown as a reason illinois should win, but oregon just struggled to adjust to georgetown's style since they never see it. illinois was more prepared for that since they play northwestern regularly. i still think illinois will win, but they will have to play more sound offensive basketball than they have recently to get it done. we know the defense will be there. -

offensively, illinois is challenged right now, but as long as they continue to play the defense they've been playing, they are going to be in every game. as illinilaw said above, i have to give props to rich mcbride. his defense was outstanding and his two early threes really gave illinois a cushion they never relinquished. i will take 9-0. i never thought they'd be 9-0 at this point so it's a pleasant surprise. at this point, i think a 14-0 or 13-1 non-conference record is likely. wins at this time of the year are money in the bank. also, to address some of the discussion of the unc win above, that is a huge win regardless of the current status of carolina. that is a team that is only going to get better as the season and you can bet they will rack up some quality wins. that game could provide a nice boost to illinois's rpi. -

QUOTE(aboz56 @ Dec 7, 2005 -> 04:40 PM) From Katz's article today on MSU: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/columns/stor...andy&id=2250617 Damn good article by Andy talking about how they shouldn't have dropped so far in the polls. I'd be hard pressed to find 4 teams in the land better than MSU yet they are ranked No. 14. Just goes to show how much the voters overreact to a couple of early season losses in Hawaii. i wouldn't worry about the polls. they're pretty much meaningless at this point. i picked michigan state to win the league in the preseason, and up until this point i haven't seen anything that discourages me from that prediction. -

QUOTE(ZoomSlowik @ Dec 7, 2005 -> 06:55 PM) From what I've seen, Illinois isn't there yet. Dee and Augustine are their only two players that they can consistently rely on, and if Dee isn't shooting well (like most of this year), things can get ugly. They should have handled UNC and Xavier fairly easily, but they struggled. I'll admit both teams have some talent, but they are also flawed teams, and a team like Illinois that has two senior leaders that were part of a Final Four run probably should have handled them more easily. They need someone else to develop into a reliable third scoring option (I'm not counting Smith because although he scores, he's been very inconsistent. That 23 point game is propping up his average). I'll be very interested to see the Illinois-Georgetown game. Georgetown is a big, atheletic team that could give Illinois problems, although their best two players (Bowman and Green) have struggled a bit early. Illinois is going to need a decent game to get by the Hoyas. you make good points, but at this point of the season what team really is "there." duke needed a half-court shot to beat a mediocre virginia tech team at home. michigan state has lost twice. kentucky lost at home to the same unc team illinois beat in chapel hill. offensively, no doubt there is tons of room for improvement, but that's to be expected, particularly in the motion where the understanding of your teammates' nuances and abilities is key. luther, dee and deron played so many games together that they made it look easy. it will take time for that to happen. defensively, although there have been some breakdowns, they are still giving up 58.6 points per game which is pretty good. i'll grant you that the opposition hasn't been stellar, but that's what the numbers say. personally, illinois has done better than i thought they would to this point. i did not think they would be unbeaten at this point, and am pleasantly surprised with what i've seen so far. weber said prior to the season that he thought this would be a good team by christmas. i think he was dead-on. edit: to clean up typos. -

QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Dec 6, 2005 -> 07:28 AM) Prediction: Sox will get Pierre for Young. I expect Pierre to go somewhere very soon. And if the Sox sign Pierre- the Cubs will once again lose out on one of there "targets" this offseason. Not to mention it would create a hell of a 1-2 punch on our team. Go for it Kenny! if this happens i will put my head in my desk drawer then ask my boss to come in and slam it about five or six times. maybe seven, depending on how the day's going.
